It is interesting that James does not appear in the list of siblings and their spouses written out by brother John (ref#4) and found in the Family Bible.

3 - I don't think James married twice. There is simply some conflict between researchers over the surname of James wife, as Mary Ann is all we get from the census.

James married Mary Ann Newton on 17 Sep 1875 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Mary was born on 16 Dec 1857 in Prestonkirk, East Lothian, Scotland. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    3 - Kilmahog - Stirling
A hamlet, situated on the River Leny a mile (1½ km) to the west of Callander at the junction of the Trossachs and Lochearnhead roads. It was the site of an early 19th century toll house and later a tweed mill.
Kilmahog, a village in Callander parish, Perthshire, on the northern head-stream of the river Teith, ¾ mile SE of the Pass of Leny and 1 W by N of Callander town. It once had a chapel, dedicated to St Chug; and it retains the chapel's cemetery.
St Chugs Chapel, after which Kilmahog is named is sited to the west of the Aberfoyle Rd at Kilmahog. This little burial ground surrounds the just visible foundations of the pre reformation chapel and is thus probably of great antiquity. Most of the legible stones are of the 19th century although some of the older stones, badly weathered, appear to date from the late 1600s.
Above the gate hangs a bell. The bell was brought from Lake of Mentieth where it was used at one time to call the ferryman when a visitor wanted to cross over to Inchmahome Priory on the island!

4 - "The first Macfarlane recorded in Callander, was factor ("Tackman" to the Duke of Perth). He stayed in what is now The Roman Camp Hotel. When Prince Charles Edward (The Young Pretender) was defeated in 1740, the Duke was banished to the West Indies and his estates forfeited to the Crown. The Macfarlan (sic) was ousted by the Crown commissioners as he was known to sympathise with the Jacobite cause.
Scotland at this time was in such a state, between Hanoverians, Jacobites, Episcopals and Presbyterians, plus the terrible cruelties of Bloody Cumberland, that there was little or no recorded births, deaths etc. The record was in the church records, i.e. the removal of the church from St Kessog's yard and the first church in the square in Callander, most of the tradesmen employed were Macfarlanes.
There is a gravestone in Kilmahog which has fallen on its face, erected to the memory of Challum Nam Schloter, in English "Malcolm the Slater". He would be a grandson of Macfarlane the Factor. I cannot mind the date on the stone and am trying to have it re-erected.
The stone has now fallen on it's face and as it is a considerable [time] since I saw it I cannot remember its exact date and name of his wife etc., but, as far as I remember, he married a Ferguson of Balquhidder or Balmlaig a crofting township on the south side of the Balvaig.
[ notes by family historian and Malcolm's great-grandson Archie Macfarlane ]
As this is obviously the Malcolm the slater who married the Ferguson of Balquhidder, (as can be seen from the gravestone there is no Gaelic on the inscription,).

Malcolm married Catherine Ferguson on 14 Dec 1827 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. Catherine was born about 1807 in Erisquchey Farm, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland; died on 1 Sep 1881 in Bridgend, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland; was buried in Kilmahog Graveyard, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland.
