Earliest ancestor of FTDNA Kit #156219 and Kit #301305, Lineage Vikings 1

Many Ancestry.com public trees show this James as son of James McFarland and his wife Janet Buchanan. DNA testing of descendants of both couples show that this is not the case, so we are still looking for this James parents.

Iredell County was formed in 1788 from Rowan County, therefore the earliest records are Rowan County records.

    Rowan County, NC records:

James is present in the Rowan County tax list from 1768 through 1787. He is shown with 440 acres in 1778 and 400 acres in 1783.

1768: in Walter Lindsay's district. in 1778 listed as James McFarling with 440 acres in Capt. Purviance's Dist.

In 1787 in Capt. Morrison's dist. The list includes on white male 21-60, one 16-21, 4 white males under 16, or 60+, and 4 white females.

There is a John McFarland who appears in the 1772 tax list of Walter Lindsay, but that could just be a mistake on the transcriber. However in 1778 there is a John McFarland with 149 acres in Capt. Jacob Nichol's district. Do not know who this is.

However, there is a John McFarland who purchased 100 acres on the waters of the South Yadkin, joining John Archibald and Wm. McCrary and David Logan, Rowan Co. deeds p. 456 from Absracts of state Grants, Vol. 1, by Margaret Hoffman.

Property in Rowan: He purchases 400 acres on Aug. 9, 1787, State Grant #1492, at a cost of 50 shillings per 100 acres. described as on Back Creek, (which flows from Hwy. 70, crosses Arey Rd, and meets 3rd Creek). Waters of South Yadkin. Source: Abstracts of Rowan County N.C. Deed Books 11-14, 1786-1797, by James Kluttz. p. 9

There are other references to his land in other people's deeds. Such as the deed of William Waugh in 1778 on both sides of Third Creek, bordering James McFarlin. William Waugh is probably the father of Elizabeth Waugh who married Samuel McFarlin.

A map that shows James' land on Back Creek is available on-line at http://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ncmaps/id/118 It was made in 1777.
