    SOURCE: Forsythe Saga family info

Cousins, Joseph (1761) and William McFarland (1755) of Peters Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, fought in the revolutionary war. After the war they settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia where they married the sisters Rebecca and Margaret White. Around 1783, Joseph (1761) removed to Greene County, Tennessee, where he remained until about 1793 when he removed to Harrison County, Kentucky. About the same time, his father William (1731) and his brothers William (1763) and Benjamin (1765) joined him there. His cousin and brother-in-law William (1755) also came about that time. These five gentlemen are the seed for the McFarland families of Harrison County, Kentucky. Virtually none of the family would remain however. They began to migrate to Greene County, Ohio beginning with William (1763) who arrived there between 1798 and 1803. Joseph (1761) moved there in 1810, and Arthur must have arrived before 1814 when his daughter Eliza was born. It is unknown what became of Benjamin (1765) after 1810, but presumably he migrated with the family and died soon after, or he died in Kentucky and his family migrated with the rest of the McFarland clan. The patriarch of the family, William (1731) died around the time of the migration. It is thought his wife survived him and died in Ohio.

    HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY.

William McFarland, Esq., emigrated from Kentucky, and came with his family to this township about 1804, and purchased one hundred and fifty acres of land on Massie's Creek, a short distance from where Cedarville now stands. There was no trading point then nearer than Xenia, and that was a small affair. Salt was hauled from Chillicothe, and could not be had nearer. Mr. McFarland soon became a prominent man in the sparsely settled neighborhood, and served as foreman on the first grand jury in the county, in 1804.

    My notes:
D.A.R. number A076838. Record says he served in the Cumberland Co. Militia

There are two William McFarlands in Cumberland Co. PA during the Revolutionary War. It all depends on the unit and what part of the county it is connected with. The other William McFarland lived in Pennsboro township. This William McFarland lived in Peters township. Since he moved to VA in 1778 with his parents, it would also be necessary to check the year for the service.

By any chance, is the William Mc Farland in Nicholas Co. KY in 1800 tax list, and there in 1810 census with one over 45, 7 under 16, total of 11, the same as this one who is in Harrison Co. in 1820? Nicholas is adjacent to Harrison Co. KY. Another adjacent county is Fleming Co. that has a Robert Mc Farlen on the tax list for 1800.

    p. 137 Vol. II Chalkey records in Augusta Co.
    White vs. Moore--O. S. 168; N. S. 59--Bill, June, 1808.
Complainants are, viz: John, Nathaniel, James, William White,
Margaret (White), wife of James McFarland, Rebecca (White), wife of
William McFarland, Mary (White), wife of Robert Snodgrass, David
Greenlee and his children (infants), heir of their mother Jane, who
was Jane White, all being heirs and legal representatives of John
White, who was only heir-at-law and legal representative of Thomas
Boyd, who was son of Andrew Boyd, who died many years ago, leaving
a tract in Augusta County, 240 acres. Andrew died testate in
Augusta, devising to his wife and sons, Thomas and John. Andrew's
widow died intestate and her part descended to Thomas, the eldest
son. After Andrew's death, a patent issued in Andrew's name for an
entry of his for 115 acres, but some one struck out Andrew and
inserted John. John died testate, without issue, devising his lands
to his wife, Elizabeth, for her life, with reversion to her son,
John Varnum. Then Thomas Boyd died intestate, leaving complainants
his heirs. But Elizabeth Boyd and William Moore, who bought claim
of Varnum, set up an adverse claim. Answer says Andrew Boyd died
1750. A patent for the 115 acres issued in 1759 in name of John,
when he was not more than 12 or 15 years old. Andrew Boyd's will
dated 26th February, 1749, proved in Augusta 22d May, 1750, to
cousin, John White, if he came here to live. Wife, Rebecca.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:
There had been confusion about this Joseph McFarland. It was not until it became clear that Robert, b. 1730 had several more children unaccounted for, that it became obvious that the Joseph who patented land in 1783 in Greene Co. near Robert McFarland, and sold this land in 1792, was the cousin that Thomas Sims McFarland was referring to. Joseph and his brother John both lived in Rockbridge Co. briefly and married there. They then moved to Greene Co. (now Jefferson and Cocke Co.) near their siblings and father Robert Sr. (b. 1730). They sold their land and moved to Kentucky in the 1790s. Father Robert went to visit them, taking the family Bible. He died on the road, the Bible was lost, therefore the only sons anyone accounted for were the sons who stayed living in Jefferson Co.

    From
    Thomas Sims McFarland:

Simultaneously with the removal of my grandfather to Kentucky, came Joseph McFarland, a cousin, and also a brother-in-law, having married Margaret White. The family consisted of twelve children. Joseph purchased land adjoining that of grandfather's , on the north side. The family came to Ohio in 1809 and settled near Cedarville, Greene county. In a few years, several of the family with those of my grandfather, with whom they intermingled in marriage, moved to Adams county, Illinois, near what is now Camp Point, in 1822, and formed a nucleus, around which gathered hundreds of McFarlands, many still living in the same locality. My grandfather, William McFarland, served one year in the Revolutionary war, near the close.

Of the Joseph McFarland family, a cousin and brother-in-law of my grandfather, there were twelve children, namely Katharine, married John McFarland, born October 3rd 1782, and died in Adams county, Illinois. Robert, born April 1st 1784; Polly, April 1st, 1786; John A., born April 3rd, 1788; Joseph, born Sept. 3rd, 1790; Margaret, born Jan.12th., 1793; Tabitha, born June 28th, 1797, married John White; Martha born Nov. 8th, 1798, never married; James, born Sept.3rd, 1803; Priscilla, born Nov.8th., 1807, married George Currey, near Cedarville, Ohio, one child, now Mrs. James Milburn, of Cedarville; Thirza, born August 28th, 1809, married Uriah Lawrence. Joseph, the father, was born Feb.4th, 1761, and died Nov. 3rd, 1839, buried near Cedarville, Ohio. Margaret, his wife, was born May 8th, 1763, died Nov. 3rd, 1834.

SOURCE: (From James McFarland Email) Chalkelys Scotch Irish of Virginia: Vol
1(II??) page 437 states that Margret White married James McFarland in later
Rockbridge Co. Another Email states that James married Rebecca White and
William married Margaret White. Their names are plainly written on the civil
lawsuit papers on file in Augusta County, VA. (NOTE: By Gary Morris. Since
it is questionable that another McFarland married a Margaret McFarland, it
seems suspicious enough to double check the original source. Chalkelys is
known for errors. Perhaps he transcribed Jas. as James, when the original
entry may have been Jos. for Joseph. Needs to be confirmed, as there is
    reasonable doubt.
