    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: USA
    • Residence: 1669, Hingham, Massachusetts
    • Possessions: 1670, Hingham, Massachusetts; On March 10,”…the Proprietors of the Common lands in Hingham, drew their Lots for the Third Division of Conahassett uplands…” Purthe, in partnership with John Langlee, received 16 acres of land in this drawing. These were on the outskirts of the main town center, and mostly went to the second generation of Hingham sons. The fact that these people were listed as Proprietors mean they were already landowners.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines:
I did a search of Old Parish Records at Scotland's People site for all male McFarlands (every spelling) born bet. 1630 and 1655. The only close match was a Parlon McFarlon b. 1650 in Kenmore to a Patrick McFarlon and Margaret Nikawis? BTW, in this time period the most common spelling in Scotland was McFarland.

MHH notes: Concerning Purdy's arrival in Massachusetts. No one knows when or how Purdy arrived in Hingham. However, it has been speculated that he arrived as a POW from Scotland.

Purdie McFarland is included on a list of men who were captured at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 by Cromwell and then sent to the Massachusetts colony in November of 1650. However, the likelihood of a 6 year old boy being among those prisoners is extremely hard to fathom. The list was made by a researcher named George Sawin Stewart and is available online. However there is no manifest of the ship's passengers, and Mr. Stewart did not provide his sources.

Purdy's name spelling is all over the place. His first name is sometimes Purthe, however, on most documents it appears as Purdy. His surname is spelled Mackfarlin in some places Magvarlo in others and in Suffolk Co. records as Mackvarlow, but by 1721 in two deed documents in Plymouth Co. it is spelled MacFarland.
