FHC, page 798.. Under biography of son Thomas S. McFarland. Robert McFarland
was born in Rockbridge County, VA, near the Natural Bridge March 7, 1783; his
parents moved to Tennessee in 1796, and for ten years he lived at different
places in that State and in Kentucky. In October, 1806, he, in company with
Martin Hitt and Joseph Diltz, made an excursion on horseback to Champaign
County, Ohio, where he located in the following year. When he arrived in this
county, his goods were unloaded in the woods beside an oak log, and, after
paying his teamster, he had 50 cents in money to start with. He rented farms
at different places in teh county till 1811, when he purchased 80 acres of land
in Sec. 14 of Concord Township, which he cleared and improved. He was Township
Clerk from 1819 to 1831; was Assesssor for a number of years, and was also a
local minister in the M.E. Church for upward of fifty years. He was the
founder of Concord Chapel. His marriage with Deborah Gray was celebrated Dec
27, 1804. She died Oct 12, 1814, the mother of five children, two of whom are
living-- William H., living east of Urbana, and Elizabeth, now Mrs. Nichols of
Illinois. On Dec 3, 1814, he married Elizabeth Kenton, a grand-neice of Gen.
Simon Kenton, by whom he had three children, viz., Deborah, now Mrs. Kenton,
residing in Kansas; Frances, now Mrs. Conroy, of Shelby Co, Ohio and Rebecca
Gibbs, of St. Paris. Elizabeth McFarland departed this life Jan 8, 1821. On
the 23d of August of the same year he was united in marriage with Eunice
Dorsey, a native of Maryland, born Feb 3, 1797. By this union they had eleven
children. Eight are still living--Sarah J. Huston, of DeGraff, Ohio; John M.
of this township, Robert W. of the Ohio State University at Columbus, Cynthia
A. Gibbs of St. Paris, Ohio, Thomas S., James R. of Goshen, New York, Mary C.
Pence of this township, and Benjamin S., living in Kansas. Prov R. W.
McFarland is a a natural born mathematician, and is a thorough scholor. Robert
McFarland departed this life dec 28, 1863; his wife survived till Sep 17,
1869. The subject of this sketch was born Jul 14, 1832. He was raised a
farmer's boy, and received a common-school education. His chief occupation has
been tilling the soil. He now owns the old home farm and 16 acres besides,
making 96 acres in all. He has been public auctioneer for nineteen years,
couselor for eighteen years,and has been Secretary of the Champaign and Logan
County Pioneer Association for the last six years. Has been a newspaper
contributor for twenty-eight years, and is President of the Editors and
Reporters Association of this county. He has also been very successful as a
detective. In 1856 Sep 30 he married Ursula H. Evans, of Kentucky, born Dec
23, 1829. She died Dec 14, 1864, the mother of one child -- Evans White, who
met his death Apr 20, 1871 by a horse falling on him. Thomas S. McFarland and
Catherine Evans were married March 20, 1866. She is also a native of Virginia,
a sister of Ursula H., born Oct 13, 1834. The fruits of this marriage are four
children--Hattie B., Rebecca J., Sallie DeVoe adn Thomas D.C.
Page 489 Robert McFarland was taken to Tennessee early in life, but
subsequently settled on Indian Creek, near Cynthiance, Kentucky.

LDS Microfilm # 0934881. Page 201 Robert McFarland, the father of Thomas Sims
McFarland, was a native of Rockbridge County, VA, and was taken by his parents
when still a child to Tennessee and shortly afterwards to Kentucky. In 1807
Robert came to Champaign County to make a permanent location. ...a prospecting
trip with Martin Hitt and Joseph Diltz. The impelling reason for McFarlands
leaving Kentucky was his intense hatred of slavery. In Oct 1807 the McFarland
family arrived in the county and stopped for a short time in the Northern part
of the present Union Township. ...They quickly made a cabin. In this cabin,
William McFarland and his family and Joseph Gray, his father-in-law, lived from
October until the following spring. They then moved to Salem Township on a
tract about half way between Urbana and West Liberty. Still later the two
families located about 2 and 1/2 miles SE of Westville in the Mad River
Township. Robert McFarland bought the farm of Henry Bacome. In the winter
1811/1812, Robert McFarland built a cabin on his newly acquired farm and in
April 1812 moved into his new home.
Page 1105 Thomas Sims McFarland, one of the most prominent local
historians, was born in Concord Township July 14, 1832 and died March 19, 1914.
Son of Robert McFarland. T.S. McFarland was one of 19 children.

Cousins, Joseph (1761) and William McFarland (1755) of Peters Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, fought in the revolutionary war. After the war they settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia where they married the sisters Rebecca and Margaret White. Around 1783, Joseph (1761) removed to Greene County, Tennessee, where he remained until about 1793 when he removed to Harrison County, Kentucky. About the same time, his father William (1731) and his brothers William (1763) and Benjamin (1765) joined him there. His cousin and brother-in-law William (1755) also came about that time. These five gentlemen are the seed for the McFarland families of Harrison County, Kentucky. Virtually none of the family would remain however. They began to migrate to Greene County, Ohio beginning with William (1763) who arrived there between 1798 and 1803. Joseph (1761) moved there in 1810, and Arthur must have arrived before 1814 when his daughter Eliza was born. It is unknown what became of Benjamin (1765) after 1810, but presumably he migrated with the family and died soon after, or he died in Kentucky and his family migrated with the rest of the McFarland clan. The patriarch of the family, William (1731) died around the time of the migration. It is thought his wife survived him and died in Ohio.

HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY.

William McFarland, Esq., emigrated from Kentucky, and came with his family to this township about 1804, and purchased one hundred and fifty acres of land on Massie's Creek, a short distance from where Cedarville now stands. There was no trading point then nearer than Xenia, and that was a small affair. Salt was hauled from Chillicothe, and could not be had nearer. Mr. McFarland soon became a prominent man in the sparsely settled neighborhood, and served as foreman on the first grand jury in the county, in 1804.

There are two William McFarlands in Cumberland Co. PA during the Revolutionary War. It all depends on the unit and what part of the county it is connected with. The other William McFarland lived in Pennsboro township. This William McFarland lived in Peters township. Since he moved to VA in 1778 with his parents, it would also be necessary to check the year for the service.

By any chance, is the William Mc Farland in Nicholas Co. KY in 1800 tax list, and there in 1810 census with one over 45, 7 under 16, total of 11, the same as this one who is in Harrison Co. in 1820? Nicholas is adjacent to Harrison Co. KY. Another adjacent county is Fleming Co. that has a Robert Mc Farlen on the tax list for 1800.

John Varnum. Then Thomas Boyd died intestate, leaving complainants
his heirs. But Elizabeth Boyd and William Moore, who bought claim
of Varnum, set up an adverse claim. Answer says Andrew Boyd died
1750. A patent for the 115 acres issued in 1759 in name of John,
when he was not more than 12 or 15 years old. Andrew Boyd's will
dated 26th February, 1749, proved in Augusta 22d May, 1750, to
cousin, John White, if he came here to live. Wife, Rebecca.

the Seal of our Land office bearing Date the thirtieth Day of Septem
ber in the Year of our Lord 1747 there was surveyed and laid out
unto Robert McFarland of the County of Lancaster a certain
Tract of Land situate on Chickasalungo Creed in Donegal Township
within the said County bounded and described as follows viz. Begin
ning at a marked Water Beech tree standing on the bank of the
said Creek and from thence extending by Robert McFarland Senior’s
Land and Land of the Widow Work North seventy three Degrees
West three hundred and eighty two Perches to a marked Black Oak

Father Robert McFarland Sr. died in 1751 and his estate is settled.

Lancaster County Deed Book C, pp. 299-300, FHL microfilm #21382: March 3rd, 1752, Robert McFarland sells to Ludwick Lyndemote his 206 acre patent for 190 pounds lawful money, that will be paid out in payments in May 1754, 1755, 1756, and 1757.

Lancaster County Deed Book D, pp. 130-131, FHL microfilm #21383: March 2, 1752 records the sale by Robert McFarland and his wife Esther to Ludwick Lyndemote for the 206 acre patent. This was not recorded until June 8, 1754 and is signed by Robert and Esther (with a mark). It looks like Ludwick Lyndemote paid off his note early, and with that obligation fulfilled, this deed was then made official. It does not appear that Robert and Esther were present, this was a sealed document that was delivered to the court by Ludwick Lyndemote.

Robert McFarland appears on the Peters township, Cumberland Co. tax list in 1753. The year before, he was not present. There was, however a Widow McFarland on the tax list. in 1751 and in 1753. I assume this is Catherine McFarland, widow of Joseph McFarland who died in 1750 in Cumberland Co. Administrators Book V. A-D 1750-1845, FHL, film 1010109 through FamilySearch.org

In 1769 a Robert McFarland acquires a patent for his land in what is Peters township, Cumberland Co., and in 1778, he and his wife Esther sell this land in Cumberland Co. and move to Rockbridge Co. VA. It is my belief now that the Robert of Cumberland/Rockbridge is the same Robert Jr. from Lancaster Co. PA.

Some trees claim that the Robert McFarland in Caswell Co. NC is this Robert, but that doesn't seem likely anymore. Y-DNA tests for a descendant of that Robert of Caswell/Person Co. NC shows a relationship in the Cadet lineage, but has a different marker at DYS 576 from all the other men who are descended from Robert of Lancaster Co.
The Robert McFarland who died in 1780 in Caswell Co. NC, appeared in NC in 1760 with his first purchase of land from Hugh Barnet of 573 acres in Orange County. Caswell Co. was carved from Orange Co. in 1777. However as early as 1752 a John McFarland is called to be a juror in Orange County and in 1761 John McFarland, James McFarland are to work on a road and Robert McFarland is appt. to a jury and is to lay out a road. In 1762-66 a Robert Sr. and Jr. are mentioned to lay out roads from Hugh Barnett's line. Gary Morris thinks that this Robert McFarland came as an indentured servant and was born in 1731 in Scotland.

the Province or Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Yeoman and Esther his
wife of the one part, and Robert McFarland Junior of Tinicum
Township in the County of Bucks in the said Province of

Richard Penn Esquires: Proprietors of the Province of Pennsylvania
in and by their patent bearing date the fifth day of December 1769
for the Consideration therein Mentioned did sell grant release

BIOGRAPHY: Robert McFarland was born about 1705 in (perhaps Tyrone County), Ireland, son of Robert McFarland. When he was about 25 to 35 years old, he came to America with his father and family, first settling in Phildalephia, Pennsylvania.
...It is most likely in Philadelphia that Robert met his first wife, and they had at least five children that reached maturity. She must have died about 1747/1750.
...At least by 1751 Robert had moved to Peters Township, Cumberland (that part now in Franklin) County, Pennsylvania. There, in about 1751 he married his second wife, Esther _____ (last name perhaps Houston). They had at least 8 children, all born in Peters Township.
...About the summer of 1778 Robert sold his land holdings in Peters Township and moved, along with his wife and all children by his second wife, their families, and at least one nephew, to Rockbridge County, Virginia. There he remained the rest of his years, dying Christmas Day in 1797. Esther died there in 1794.

CONFLICT: McFarland book says died Christmas day 1799, but Will was probated Feb 1798, suggesting year to be late 1797.

Their ancestors were from Scotland and some from Wales. They were called Scotch Irish. Robert and family came to Cumberland County, PA, thence to Rockbridge County, VA.

James GRIGSBY and wife Franky land sold to Robert McFARLAND. 1 Dec 1778. ...This Indenture made the first Day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Eight Between James Grigsby and Franky Grigsby his Wife of the County of rockbridge of the one Part and Robert McFarland of the Same county of the other part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the Sum of twelve hundred and fifty pounds current money of Virginia to the said James & Franky Grigsby in hand paid by the said Robert McFarland at or before the Sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt

Robert married Esther Dunn on 27 Sep 1748 in Earltown, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. Esther was born about 1726 in Ireland; died in 1794 in Rockbridge Co., VA; was buried in FallingSpring Ch, Rockbridge, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Mary Helen Haines notes: could this not be Esther Dunn? We know that Robert's wife's name is Esther from the sale of their land in 1752 in Lancaster Co. PA. We are not sure if Esther's name is really Dunn, however a marriage took place in 1748 in the proximity of Donegal township, so it seems logical. Other Roberts in PA at this time include Robert, son of James of Cumberland Co.; however he is not noted as ever marrying, and he was not born until 1741. Thomas Sims McFarland, in his history said that the Robert of Rockbridge Co. came to America in 1740. This Robert did marry an Esther, who was his wife when he died in Rockbridge Co. VA in 1797. However, it is usually said that Esther is a Huston. I believe that the evidence overwhelmingly shows that the Robert of Rockbridge is the same man as the Robert, son of Robert and Jennet, of Lancaster Co. PA, then Cumberland Co. PA, before the move to Rockbridge VA in 1778. Therefore, the logical conclusion is the notes below speculating that Esther is Esther Huston is probably wrong. Author George Cleek's history has the two McFarland families (Duncan's and Robert's) completely mixed together. There is a Robert McFarland from the Duncan line also.
