  1. 1.  George William McFarland was born on 11 Jun 1885 in St. Clair Co., Illinois (son of William Thompson McFarland and Elizabeth McKensie); died in 1974 in Collinsville, Illinois.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Birth: 1886, Illinois
    • Residence: 1900, East St Louis Ward 1, St Clair, Illinois

    Notes:

In the 1920 census, George W. McFarland is 34, born in Illinois from parents born in Missouri, and married to Z. Gertrude, 30, born in Illinois, father KY and mother Illinois. there are two children, Donald george, 10 and John B 6. George is working as a fireman of the steam railroad, and they are living on Ohio Street.

In the 1930 census, George W. McFarland is working as a Locomotive Engineer and the family is living on Ohio St. in East St. Louis, St. Clair Co., Illinois, Dist. 53, Image 39.

Notes from his grandson, Jonathan Drew McFarland:

My father marked that it was his parents. My grandfather Geo. William McF. worked most of his career for the Missouri & Ohio Railroad (later the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio). Originally an Alabama based railroad, he worked from what would have been it's northern terminus during a lot of its history at St. Louis or rather E. St. Louis, Illinois, where his grandfather, John H. moved with the whole immediate clan from the Liberty area late in life. He was promoted from fireman to Engineer in 1920...a position he kept till the late 1950s when he retired. 1906-20 he was a fireman...the guy that shovels the coal and keeps the fire going...that shovel may mean it's before he was promoted, or when he was? His pinnacle was for many years running the The Rebel, from St. Louis to the Gulf...that was the M&O's flagship passenger train. This engine doesn't seem to me to be the sort running a high speed passenger line...and oddly, that cab either should be marked M&O or the number (decommissioned? can't even tell if there is smoke coming out in that pic) I'm sure it would have been the sort he'd have run earlier in his career. I have his detailed job history. Interestingly, his first job, I think age 12, was a messenger for the Wiggins Street Ferry Company. It's not hard to imagine that his uncle Milton P., the Riverboat pilot, may've put a good word in for him or suggested it as a good place to start. He ran The Rebel when it converted over to diesel, and on it's very last run when he was 72 years old. He was also president of his union local for decades.

Family/Spouse: Zella Gertrude Boaz. Zella was born on 14 Jun 1889 in Ridgway, Gallatin County, Illinois, United States of America; died in 1948 in East St. Louis, Illinois; was buried in Collinsville, Madison County, Illinois, United States of America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:

    2. John "Jack" Boaz McFarland, RoM02 was born on 14 Jan 1913 in East St. Louis, St. Clair Co., Illinois; died on 16 Feb 1985; was buried in Virginia.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  William Thompson McFarland was born about 1836 in St Francois Co., MO (son of John Henry McFarland and Mary Amanda Frezelle); died on 22 Mar 1912 in Illinois.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Birth: 1840, Missouri
    • Residence: 1850, District 80, St Francois, Missouri, USA
    • Residence: 1860, Liberty, St Francois, Missouri, USA
    • Residence: 1900, East St Louis Ward 1, St Clair, Illinois

    Notes:

In his marriage certificate, it states his name is William Thompson. Why would he go by Thomas? Was there a mistake in his marriage certificate?

William T. and this family is somewhat a mystery.
In 1850, Wm. T. is the son of John H. in the census in St. Francois County. He is 14 and there seems no question of that, considering he falls in the middle of a slew of children born 2 years apart.

In the 1860 census he is married, age 24, and living with his wife Irena in Iron Mt. in the Liberty township and has a male child W. H. that is 6 months old.

In the 1870 census, he is going by Thomas and now says he is 40, which is off by 4 years and now has two more children, Jennie, 7, and Edward, 5.

In the 1880 census they are all gone. John H., his father, moved to East St. Louis between 1870 and 1880. It seems that William Thomas did also, but it is a mystery about his wife Irene and the children.

Is the William McFarland, husband of Elisabeth McKensie, the same person as William T. McFarland? We know by DNA testing of a descendant of William McFarland and wife Elizabeth that they are part of the same group of McFarlands, but have not seen definite proof that the two Williams are the same.

In 1880 there is a McFarland, living in East St. Louis, age 40, with wife Lissie, born in Ohio, parents both from Ireland, and a daughter named Jennie age 9, born in Missouri, father MO and mother Ohio, so appears to be their child.

In 1900, William McFarland, with birth date listed as January 1840 is living in East St. Louis, married 25 years to Elisabeth. She has given birth to 4 children all alive still and living with them. The oldest, James, was born in Missouri, the rest in Illinois.

In 1910, T. W. McFarland, 69, born MO, with father born NC and mother born MO lis living in Ward 1, Dist. 102, in East St. Louis, St. Clair Co. Illinois with wife Lizzie, 55, born Ohio, parents from Ireland. Both T.W. and Lizzie have been married before, and have been married 34 years. She has given birth to 4 children, all alive. There is a daughter, Goldie, 23, born in Illinois, and another daughter Frances, 18, now married for half a year, to Ben Trilley, also 18, born in east St. Louis and living with them.

In 1920, Lizzie McFarland is living in East St. Louis, and is listed as a widow.

William married Elizabeth McKensie on 8 Feb 1876 in St Clair, Illinois, USA. Elizabeth was born in 1855 in OH; died on 30 Mar 1932. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Elizabeth McKensie was born in 1855 in OH; died on 30 Mar 1932.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1900, East St Louis Ward 1, St Clair, Illinois

    Notes:

In the 1930 census, Elizabeth McFarland, age 70, is living still in East St. Louis, she is living at the school where she is a janitress, and according to the 1920 census, that is the Douglas school. It lists her parents as being, father from Northern Ireland, and mother from the Irish Free State. In her family in 1930 is Goldie Pinkerton, 42, daughter, and Eleanor Smith, granddaughter, 15.

    Children:
    1. 1. George William McFarland was born on 11 Jun 1885 in St. Clair Co., Illinois; died in 1974 in Collinsville, Illinois.
    2. Hester McFarland was born in 1887 in Illinois; died in UNKNOWN.
    3. Frances McFarland was born in 1892 in Illinois; died in UNKNOWN.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John Henry McFarland was born on 28 Dec 1805 in Buncombe Co., North Carolina (son of Jesse McFarland, BY146078 and Isabella Henry); died on 22 Aug 1873 in St Louis, St Louis, Missouri, USA.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:
Although I have not seen it, it would seem logical that the H. is for Henry.

John H. McFarland appears in the 1830 census in St. Francois county as the head of the family. He is living next to Samuel Vance and near John McFarland and Reuben McFarland. He is also there in the 1840 census.

In 1850 he is on p. 161, fam. 131 in St. Francois Co.

John H. McFarland made two land claims in St. Francois County. First was made 1-17-1837 for 40 acres, Cert. # 1811: SESW 3, 35-N, 6E, 5th PM. Second was made 8-10-41, for 40 acres, Cert. #6862, NESW 3, 35-N, 6E, 5th PM. It appears to be adjacent to Sand Cr., to the west of Farmington near where Hwy. F crosses Best Road.

All of his oldest children would have been born in this location in Liberty township, St. Francois County.

It seems he moved to St. Louis where his children were after the death of his wife. He was living in a boarding house in East St. Louis in 1870. It appears he died across the river, back in Missouri, and his body was taken back to Ironton to be buried.

John married Mary Amanda Frezelle on 23 Sep 1831 in Washington Co., MO. Mary was born on 26 Jan 1812 in Rockbridge Co., VA; died on 11 Feb 1867 in St. Francois Co., MO. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Jesse purchased 100 acres on the Ravens Fork above Jacob Mingus...including the place called Plumb Orchard. This deed was later voided because it was determined to be owned by the Cherokee, which they still do today.
    • Residence: 1810, Haywood, North Carolina, United States

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

    Haywood Co. NC:
Book A, p. 23 Oct. 21, 1808. Benjamin Parks to Jesse McFarland, both of Buncombe Co. For the sum of $90, 100 acres on the Ravens Fork above Jacob Mingus included the place called Plumb orchard....Signed Benjamin Parks. Wit F (elix) Walker jur. Jacob Mingus, Ord by Walker at Jun 1809 Court. Reg 14 aug 1809.

Jesse McFarland's children list their father as being born in North Carolina in the 1880 census. It is likely that he was born in the area south of the Nolachucky River where the family seems to have moved in 1784. That land would have been part of what becomes the State of Franklin briefly, and is part of Cocke Co., Tennessee today. Back in 1784 it was part of grants of land made by the state of North Carolina.

St. Francois Co., MO. Box 26 Probate Deeds, Wills, etc. Estate sale, on July 10, 1825. lists those in attendance including James Caldwell, Rucker Jackson, Eliot Jackson, Martin Sebastian, James McFarland and more. List of heirs include: John , William , Lucretia , Melvina, Polly Eliza, Eli Newman, Jackson, and Frank B. McFarland.

  2. 9.  Isabella Henry was born on 24 Jul 1786 in South Carolina; died about 1860 in Missouri.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

I believe that her name is Isabella Henry, and she married a Boyd before she married Jesse McFarland. There is a Henry family that lived near the McFarlands in Buncombe/Haywood Co. There is also a Boyd family. I believe Isabella is the daughter of John Henry and wife Nancy Newman.

The only information on the Boyd family is a Robert Boyd, born 1801 in Buncombe Co. that has a son named John Henry Boyd.

William McFarland, Jesse's brother, sold his land on Jonathans Creek to John Henry.

Haywood Co. Deed Records: Pages 91-92.
Indenture, 5 Jan. 1809, between Felix WALKER of the Co. of Haywood and John HENRY of the same Co. in consideration of the sum of $200 hath conveyed unto the said John HENRY a tract in the said Co. on both sides of the Socah. F. WALKER {Seal}. Witnesses: David McFARLAND and Eli Newman HENRY. Registered 16 Jul. 1810.

The area where Jesse McFarland buys land is at Raven's Fork of the Oconaluftee River at Big Cove. There is a street in this area named Boyd.

Isabella would have been born in York Co. SC, since that is where the Henrys were living before they moved to NC according to the notes below. However, there are multiple John Henrys in York Co. SC, still living there in 1810, 1820, 1830.

Judging from Jesse and Isabella's naming patterns for their children, Isabella must be related to Eli Newman Henry who married Rebecca Cathey, daughter of George Cathey. Eli Newman Henry was born abt. 1792 and married Rebecca abt. 1818. Eli and Rebecca were in Cooper Co. MO. He died abt. 1823 and she remarried a James McCormick in 1825.

Found these notes concerning Isabella's possible family roots:

William Henry was born in 1715 in Ireland. He married Isabella Margaret McKeown. William came to America at about the age of 18 and settled in Virginia and was the immigrant-progenitor of the Henry family of Mt. Vernon, Arkansas.
William and four of his sons took part in the Battle of King's Mountain, a famous battle occurring during the Revolutionary War. William and several members of his immediate family were buried in the Bethany Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church cemetery. His tombstone was engraved: "In Memory of William Henry, who died October 2, 1819, aged 104 years."
    William and Isabella had ten children: Mary (b. 1749), Alexander (b. 1751), William II (b. 1753), Malcom (b. 1755), John (b. 1758), Josiah (b. 1760), Isabella (b. 1762), Jane (b. 1767), Francis (b. 1768), and James (b. 1774).

In the 1800 Buncombe Co. census is a Joseph S. Henry.
In the 1800 Burke Co. NC census is John Henry.
In the 1812 regiments for Haywood Co. is a Capt. Jacob Henry, in 16th Co. Also a Eli N. Henry.

1810 census in Haywood is a Evins Henry, John Henry, and Malcolm Henry. In Buncombe is a Joseph Henry, and another Joseph Henry, a Malcomb Henry and a William Henry.

John Henry, is the son of William Henry above. He was born Apr. 15, 1758 in Anson NC, died Dec. 29, 1833 in Jonathans Creek Haywood Co. He married Nancy Newman. Put these names together with the names of descendants of Jesse McFarland and Isabella Henry and it forms a definite connection....the repetition of Henry and Newman.

Below was information found at Find a Grave on John Henry:

After John's parents, William and Isabel McCowen Henry, raised their family in Virginia, they settled in York County, SC. A hill there is called Henry's Knob. Tradition asserts that John's father was a brother of Patrick Henry, the famous statesman.

John himself was born and reared in Virgina. He joined the War for Independence early on. He married Nancy Newman and had four sons: Lorenzo Newton, Malcolm, Meige Newman, and John William (or Wiley) Henry. Meige may have remained in Virgina, but Malcolm and Lorenzo followed their father to Haywood County after first moving to York County, SC, possibly with their grandparents and other family members. They are buried near their father and mother. John moved to Georgia and is buried in Fannin County.

John and Nancy Newman Henry also had six daughters: Mary, Isabella, Arabella, Elizabeth Ann, Rose, and Martha Jane (called Jane) Henry.

Because of his military service, John received a land grant around 1796 which is recorded in the Burke County, NC Register of Deeds office. A pioneer, he moved to the area that later became Haywood County, NC and first settled near the present town of Waynesville on the east fork of Raccoon and Richland Creeks. He began acquiring a great deal of property, particularly in the Upper Jonathan area, now known as Maggie Valley. He and Nancy eventually settled in Evans Cove of Maggie, not far from Jonathan Creek, on the left side of the current road. They, along with other family members, are buried in a field behind their homesite.

Sadly, the gravestones have fallen and the cemetery has been plowed over and crops raised on it for several years. Fortunately, on May 3, 1936, a new marker was unveiled to mark Captain Henry's grave. The honor was conferred by the Daughters of the American Revolution. He was cited for the important part he played in winning the Battle of King's Mountain, the Battle at Cowpens, SC, and others events. He was also honored for his valuable service in protecting the more thickly populated communities of the eastern sections of both North and South Carolina from the attack of the Creek and Cherokee Indians.

Captain Henry's service is additionally commemorated on a plaque on the lawn of the Haywood County Courthouse which honors Revolutionary War soldiers. A photo to the right shows that plaque.
