Lou Helen McFarland Box Lou Helen ``Johnnie'' McFarland Box went to her Heavenly Rest on Monday, June 3, 2002. She was 96. She was born into a pioneer Texas family, July 22, 1905, Dublin, Erath County, Texas. She was the first born of Samuel Arthur McFarland and Pearl Teagle McFarland. At an early age she and her family returned to their ``roots'' in Burnet, Burnet County, Texas, where she grew up, graduated from high school and spent the last forty years of her life. The McFarland's came to Texas from Tennessee at the suggestion of their friend Sam Houston. Her mother's family came to Texas from Virginia in 1883. Her great grandfather George Jackson McFarland, M.D., was a Burnet County physician, her grandfather fought in the last Texas Indian battle on Pack Saddle Mountain, Llano County, and her father was a long time Burnet businessman. Dr. George Jackson McFarland once owned ``Granite Mountain'' in Marble Falls whose granite stone was later used to build the Texas State Capitol Building in Austin. He traded it for a team of horses and a buggy, saying, ``There was not enough grass on the whole mountain to support one cow.'' On September 18, 1927 she was married to James Ellis Box, Sr. of Lone Grove, Llano County, Texas. She spent 53 years as an elementary school teacher in the Texas Public School System. She loved teaching and her students. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Alpha Chi Chapter, a founding member of the Burnet County Genealogical Society, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and active in establishing the Fort Croghan Museum which is dedicated to the preservation of Burnet County history. She is survived by her three children, James Ellis Box, Jr. Ph. Box, Mary Beth Box, John David Box, James Boriack, Paul Boriack, Erin Box, Zane Box, Patrick Box, C. J. George Willeford, III, Robert Askew, Sr., and Bruce Malone for giving extra years to Lou Helen's life. Also, we wish to thank Dr. Scott Piotrowski for his great compassion and care in her final days. And finally, to Billie Mills, her caregiver, whose loyalty and steadfastness was a solid rock. Her grandchildren will be her pallbearers. Visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2002 at the Edgar Funeral Home, Burnet, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 7, 2002, at the First Methodist Church in Burnet with Rev. Russell Minton, officiating.
