    HARDIN LONG.

The subject of this sketch was born in Jackson county, Alabama,
October 6, 1820. He married Miss Amanda McFarland, February 12, 1846.
She was born, December 18, 1825. Was the daughter of A. McFarland,
a native of Virginia, who settled in Alabama in an early day. Mr. and
Mrs. Long have eight children, as follows: William, Washington, Susan
F., married William Hughes, a native of Alabama; Thomas G., James P.,
Arthur, Alexander and Malinda Jane. He was a farmer and stock-dealer
until the war came on. Then reverses beset him on every hand, and from
a prosperous and happy man, he was soon brought to penury and want,
having lost nearly all his possessions in that dark time of war. At the
outbreak he volunteered his services in the Forty-second Tennessee
regiment, company E., of which he was captain for a time, but resigned
October 18, 1862, having filled the position about one year. His
resignation was accepted and acknowledged, by Brig.-Gen. Lloyd Tilgman.
He was among those who surrendered at Fort Donelson, and was confined a
prisoner six months. The war over, he came to Johnson county, Missouri,
November 14, 1868, where he settled in Jackson township, section one,
township forty-six. Under the township organization, he was elected
township trustee, which office he held two years. He and his wife are
members of the Christian church. His wife was born December 18, 1825.

  1. 6.  Alexander McFarlane was born on 22 Feb 1794 in Kentucky, Kentucky, USA (son of Joseph McFarlane and unknown); died on 5 Nov 1856 in Jackson Co., Alabama; was buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery, Bridgeport, Jackson Co., Ala..

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1850, District 19, Jackson, Alabama, USA

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

What if this Alexander was the son of Alexander McFarlane, son of William of Wolf Creek. That Alexander moved to Kentucky, Cumberland Co. in 1795 where he is recorded as being Maj. Alexander McFarlane on Indian Creek. then he moved to New Madrid MO, and died in 1812 in Arkansas. This Alexander could have then moved to Alabama to join relatives.

I do not know positively who Alexander is the son of. He appears in Jackson Co. Ala in the 1840 census on p. 43. Near by (p. 41) is Joseph and William W. McFarland. It is curious he did not show up on the 1830 census anywhere that I can find. His daughter Amanda stated she was from Jackson Co. Alabama and her father was A. McFarland. In the 1840 census, Hardin Long's father Arthur Long was on p. 35 and Alexander McFarland was on p. 43.

Alexander married Susan Strother Gaines on 11 May 1820. Susan was born on 18 Jul 1800 in North Carolina or VA; died on 18 Oct 1868 in Bridgeport, Jackson, Alabama, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Susan Strother Gaines was born on 18 Jul 1800 in North Carolina or VA; died on 18 Oct 1868 in Bridgeport, Jackson, Alabama, USA.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

In the 1860 census, she says she was born in Virginia, instead of NC as she said in 1850.

Generation: 4

  1. 12.  Joseph McFarlane was born in 1775 in Virginia (son of Robert Henry McFarlane, BY214647 and Annie Walkup); died in 1840 in Jackson Co., Alabama.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Birth: Abt 1775, Augusta Co., Virginia
    • Birth: 1775, Augusta Co., VA
    • Residence: 1818, Warren County, TN
    • Residence: 1820, Warren, Tennessee, United States
    • Residence: 1830, Jackson, Alabama, USA

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

In 1818 Joseph McFarlane signs an affidavit fo the pension application of Anjer Price in Warren Co. TN.

He was living in Jackson Co. Alabama in the 1830 and 1840 census, therefore it seems likely that if he died in 1840, he would have died there.

In 1830 census he is living next to Meredith Price.

On same page is Wm. W McFarland, age 30 to 40. On next page is Alexander McFarland, age 40 to 50. Why isn't this Alexander listed as a son? In the 1850 census Alexander, 56, born in KY, is married to Susan. He has a son named Washington, 22 AL, and another son more than likely, named William 28 AL living next door.
