    Here is a letter John Tate wrote to his wife typed just as it is recorded in Cleone’s little book:

    State of Texas Burnet County August 19 1866
    Dear wife I Seat my Self this morning to let you know that I am well at present hoping when this comes to hand it will find you enjoying the Same blessings . . . I want you to be certain to come to Brenham it is only about one hundred miles from here to Brenham and it is three hundred from here to Shrevsposrt . . . I want you write to me when you expect to start so I can get to the depo as soon as you do I think you had better not start before the first of October as it is sickly now you come to memphis from their to neworleans from their to glaveston from their to Houstion from their to himpsted from their to Brenham and if I am not their enquire for the Mcentyre house and I will come to their and enquire for you . . .
    I will now answer some of the question you asked me as to timber that is scarce in this country and it is small and scrubby we have post oak black Jack percon sickamore cottonwood walnut elm and some other to tedious to mention also cedar the people fences mostly with cedar we have no black berries no rasberries no straw berries some few dewberries we are no pestered here with briars when you come here you would do well to bring a few garden seeds with you the indians are troubling the frontier of this country driving of stock and killing people it is one hundred and fifty miles from here to where they have been killing they are going to raise volunteers for the protection of the fronteer I wish you was here . . .So no more at present only remaining your affectionate husband until death

    McFarland Cemetery

    Location: About 1/4 mile north of Valley Home Road, on Nelson School Rd.
    Cemetery is on the right (north) side of the road. This cemetery is located on the old homeplace of John McFarland. There are no markers to indicate the cemetery is here, but it is listed on Google Earth. It is right next to a house, and only a few feet from the road.

    The cemetery information was collected over a five year period by the Genealogical Society of
    Hamblen County. Copies of the books, in three volumes, can be purchased from the Society for

    HOUSE, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th General Assemblies, 1825-33, representing Jefferson County; political affiliation not shown. Born on May 17, 1780, probably in Virginia, son of Colonel Robert and Margaret (McNutt) McFarland. Came at an early age to Jefferson County with his father, who was the first sheriff of the county. Large landowner. Sometime justice of the peace and school commissioner in Jefferson County; captain and major in East Tennessee militia. His wife was Jane; no children indicated. Date and place of death not found. Brother of Robert McFarland, half-brother of Benjamin F. McFarland, sometime members Tennessee General Assembly.

    DAR records say this Jane, wife of John, is Jane McNutt, born Mar. 31, 1781 in Newport, Cocke Co., TN. Other sources say his wife is Jane Long.

    There was no Newport, Cocke Co. TN in 1781. However, George McNutt does appear in the area that becomes Cocke Co. as early as 1788, when he name appears on a petition to the North Carolina assembly. His name is next to Alex. Ward. Others in this list, who would be neighbors include Wm. Bell, John McFarland, George McFarland, Samuel Jack, Benjamin McFarland.
