He was paroled as a Prisoner of War May 1, 1865 in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia (at this time he was 39 years of age, Height: 5 ft, 9 inches, Complexion: Dark, Hair: Black, Eyes Black, (While in military, signed name as T.F. or Thornton F.); RECORDS OF NATIONAL ARCHIVES, photocopies of original viewed March 1997. From Family stories: Thornton was killed while serving in the army, or, apparently just after the Civil War.

    STORY: According to daughter, Fannie (who relayed information on to granddaughter, Millie Deal Doss, who lived with Fannie until her death, Matilda's mother was a full blood Indian.

    "Andrew McFarland was born and raised in Ohio in 1810. He was married in Coshocton County, Virginia to Matilda Miller. Andrews occupation was a chair maker. He learned his skills from the Miller family of Ohio. Andrew settled shortly in Gallia County, Ohio, then in the 1840's Andrew brought his family to
