| 1351 | 1 - Listed as unemployed servant when counted in 1891 census at her fathers house at 45 Main St., Callander. 2 - My grand mother was Mary Macfarlane ID 136063 her parents were Malcolm [?] and Jane ID135907 Gt Gt grandparents Alexander and Catherine. My father was born in 1905 same as your grandfather so I am really sure they would have known each other. he lived around Kilmahog for a few years. I went to MacLaren high which was then at Bridge end and I walked past the slater business every day never thinking forty odd years later i would be so interested. My dad used to call into see his cousins but to me they were just old men. Ah how times change. Also thank you for the very good way you have told the Helen Duncan story, when I was young it was still a great scandal.St Kessogs now local history place is reluctant to acknowledge her. I plan to check out a couple of Balquidder addresses when I am home in Scotland I know the area so will get correct spelling if farms still exist. Currently in a caravan in south of Spain. He was in his 85th year. Mr Macfarlane for many years carried carried on the business of P. Macfarlane & Sons, slaters and builders which was founded in 1792, and and is now conducted by his son Peter. In his young days Mr Macfarlane was an enthusiastic football player. A native of the town, none knew the the history of the district better and it was always a pleasure to chat with him about old times . He also posessed a wide knowledge of the works of Burns from which he could quote at great length. He was a member of St. Kessog's Church and also a prominent Freemason, having from time to time held office in Lodge Ben Ledi. In 1881 census - 5 Cross St, Crieff In 1891 census - Cross, Crieff In 1901 census - 8 Church St., Crieff It is interesting that James does not appear in the list of siblings and their spouses written out by brother John (ref#4) and found in the Family Bible. 3 - I don't think James married twice. | 1358 | 1 - Living at home in 1871 and 1881 censuses. Occupation: Plumber. John worked in Fairfields Shipyard in Govan. He played for a Govan football team (semi-professionally) and was known as "the Gem". His stone in Kilmahog graveyard records "John Macfarlane of Lochsloy Callander died Mar 21 1947 aged 81 years" 2 - John's nickname was "Jakie". He was apprenticed at Stephen's Shipyard, Linthouse, Glasgow, Scotland. While he was in Glasgow at this time he witnessed the capsize and sinking of the ship Daphne as she was launched. It is not known if he was working on the building of the ship. It was at this time that he made a name for himself as an outstanding football player in the Linthouse FC team. By the time of his marriage, to Isabella Carrick on April 19 1900 in Govan, the apprenticeship was completed and John could describe himself as a master slater. John was a member of the firm of P. Macfarlane & Sons, Back Row, Callander. The other members were his father, Peter, and his brother, Archie. They didn't build houses but sub-contracted the plumbing, slating, plastering and rendering work. John had a fine head of auburn hair and according to his daughter-in-law, Marie, he was a lovely gentleman with a fine fund of Highland stories which he loved to tell. Around 1935 John was struck by a car on the humpbacked bridge at Bridgend and sustained damage to his leg(s) which made it difficult for him to get about. Thereafter he walked with two sticks. He retired form the family firm after the accident. John died 21 March 1947 at Loch Sloy, 14 Bridgend, Callander, at age 81 at the time of a huge snow. His obituary was published 29th March 1947, in the Callander Advertiser: " We regret to record the death of Mr John Macfarlane, who passed away at his home. Loch Sloy, Bridgend. Mr Macfarlane had attamed his 81st year but had been in failing health for some time past. Mr Macfarlane was a descendant of Clan Macfarlane which came to Callander in the year 1628. In sport Mr Macfarlane was widely known, especially in football. He was one of the few remaining members of the original Callander Rob Roy Club. For many years Mr Macfarlane played for the old Linthouse team and his dexterity on the field earned him the by-name "The Gem" in sporting circles. Mr Macfarlane served his apprenticeship as a plumber in Linthouse, and set up business as a master plumber in Callander. For a time the deceased was Right Worshipful Master in Lodge Ben Ledi, and subsequently Past Master. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place to the burial ground at Kilmahog. A large contingent of brother masons led the cortege to the burial ground, where the Rev. Geo. W.H. London, Minister of St Brides Church offered the committal prayer" 3 - John MACFARLANE , master slater was born on 14 Jan 1866 at Callander. He married Isabella CARRICK, daughter of Robert CARRICK , blacksmith and Catherine MCNAB, on 19 Apr 1900 at Govan. (Andrews Ancestors Direct.rtf on file) 4 - Neice's Flossie and Isabelle, and nephews Norman, Bobbie and dragging the infant Will with them raided Jake and Auntie Belle's yellow raspberrys but left behind the basket when the they had to do a runner when the back door suddenly opened. [Recollection of Flossie 2006] 5 - Linthouse were a football club from the Linthouse district of Govan, Scotland. This pre-dated The Burgh of Govan being annexed by The City of Glasgow on 5 November 1912. Linthouse were formed in 1881 from an Athletics club, the played their home matches at Langlands Park until closing in 1900. The team played in navy blue. They were founder members of the Scottish Football Alliance and won that competition in its inaugural season, 1891'96 92. They joined the Scottish Football League in season 1895'96 96 when they became part of the Scottish Second Division. Their first season in the League was not a successful one, with the club finishing bottom of the ten team division. However it was around this time that Linthouse achieved their record attendance at Langlands Park when 4,000 spectators turned out for their Glasgow Cup match against Celtic. They played for five seasons in the Second Division without much success, their highest finish being fifth in season 1897'96 98. Two seasons later in 1899'96 1900 they finished bottom of the division. Linthouse were struggling to make an impact and attendances were poor, with it being a constant battle to get paying spectators through the gate, competing as they were against nearby Rangers, who had been established far earlier. As a consequence the club decided not to seek re-election to the League at the end of 1899'96 1900, as they had to do if they wished to retain membership, and their tenure as a Scottish Football League club was over after five seasons. Linthouse entered the Scottish Cup the following season (1900'96 01) and they progressed to the second round as their first round opponents Clydebank forfeited the tie. | 1360 | 1 - Malcolm Mcfarlane died in 1875 at Causewayhead. Helen Mcfarlane was living with her daughter in Glasgow and I don't know what happened to her. There was a son John born 1825 in Logie and was wondering whether he died very young. From Page 23 of Logie Kirk Sessions: No date Williiam Towers, from Hill of Aithrey, purchased a plot for four lairs and two headstones at the back of the Church. There is no date for the purchase but in the margin, it says that these lairs were transferred to Malcolm McFarlane on the 7th Ma y 1871 - see page 41. From Page 32 of Logie Kirk Sessions: May 15th 1776 John Towers appears before the Session and it seems that there has been some mix-up over lairs. These appear to be different lairs to the above ones as each entry gives a description of locations. It tells of how he agrees to move grave stones. Th ere is also a note beside this entry in the margin and it says that these lairs are transferred to John Christie, Ironmoulder in Stirling, grandson of John Towar, this is dated 11th September 1875 From Page 41 of Logie Kirk Sessions: 9th May 1871 Malcom McFarlane provided a deposition dated 13th April/August 1850 signed by Mrs. Michael Towers (Margaret Cumming) in respect of four lairs mentioned on page 23 (of this book). From Page 74 of Logie Kirk Sessions: 14th October 1850 Hellen Christie, spouse of Malcolm McFarlane, Causewayhead obtained another 4 lairs in the Old Churchyard and then it goes on to describe the location. Briefly, I am 6th generation Aussie, with firm research connecting me to my 4th Great Grandfather Malcolm McFarlane in Scotland. I found his death certificate, on which it states his Wif e was Helen Christie, father was also a Malcolm Mcfarlane, mother was Ann Parker. His father is stated as being a seaman in the Royal Navy. I did however come across a Will (everything is left to a brother John) in my research that belongs to a Malcolm Mcfarlane, who has railway stocks. Which correlates with a death certificate that ha s a Malcolm (married to a Helen Christie) stating occupation as being with the railways (carriage inspector or something to that effect). The will is circa 1853, the death cert is 1875. Also has Malcolm's father as Malcolm (his occupation was a Se aman in the RN) and Ann. My husband's great-grandfather Malcolm McFarlane was born here.Malcolm's father, another Malcolm, was listed in the library as gentry in 1856 and ran what is now known as the Wallace Hot el. We were unable to find records as to the name of the Hotel during this period, the current managers did not have records onsite. We believe the next McFarlane line back was married to a Christie girl, from the local area, being a farming famil y. The Christie girl had a twin brother. My husband to this day is a male twin with a female twin sister. His twin sister has a boy & girl twin. We would find it of great interest if you could direct us where to research further for additional inf ormation about the McFarlanes from 1856 and prior of Stirling. Look forward to your response. | 1361 | 1 - Malcom's parents were Alexander and Eliza McFarland. I don't know Eliza's maiden name. They are listed in the 1860 Census of Moore Co., Rollins Store Post Office, page 36, family #249. Alexander was aged 45, Eliza 29 and Malcolm was 1 year old. There is also a daughter, Sallie, aged 6 and a younger brother, Wm. B. J., aged one month. Eliza apparently died before the 1870 Census. In 1870 Alexander, aged 55, is listed in Sloan's Township of Moore Co., Jonesboro Post Office, page 46, family #264. The second listing for the family is Isabella C. McFarland, age 41. Isabella is listed as House Keeper but in the 1880 Census (Moore Co., Jonesboro Township, pg. 41, family #379) she is listed as Alexanders wife. Alexander had children by both Eliza and Isabella; Sally, Malcolm, Wm. Benjamin Jones, Daniel, Margaret, Mary, Flora and Betty. Wm. WI, at the age of 1 9. To this union 8 children were born, 5 of whom survive her. Soon after their marriage they moved to New Orleans and were living there during the exciting outbreak of the civil war. Hastily leaving the south they returned to Wisconsin and have s ince resided near and in Mount Hope. Besides her aged husband and 5 children to mourn her loss a host of friends and neighbors will miss her kindly face and the pleasant word that ever greeted the welcome caller. The bereaved family gratefully acknowledge the help extended them in this time of sorrow. [Obit] 3 - Mary can be traced until her death being married to William Proudfoot. Mary shows to have immigrated in 1858 from the 1900 US Census, page 7B, Township of Mount Hope, Grant County, Wisconsin dated 1 June 1900 as well as the 1910 US Census, page 9A in the same township, county, and state dated 27 April 1910. Having consulted with another researcher who has Catherine in her tree (Anne Martin), and checked the evidence of Census and a her death certificate, I have confirmed that Catherine is NOT the daughter of Duncan McFarlane I43124 and Christina Johnstone. In fact her parents were: Dugald McFarlane and Mary Carmichael. Her MI is in Tarbert cemetery South Knapdale. Catherine married Duncan LEITCH on 3 Mar 1821, and Census records indicate they had eight children: Mary (born 1823), Dugald (born 1825), twins John and Nancy (born 1830), Archibald (born 1836), Margaret (born 1837), Catherine (born 1839), and Duncan (born 1841). | 1384 | 1 - Peter inherited the family building business which his sons continued and according to his son Will, Peter purchased Loch Sloy Cottage from his uncle Jake and is seen standing in front of the cottage in the picture that accompanies this entry. Towards the end of his life he was often to be found kilted and posing, with Ben Ledi in the background, for the benefit of amateur photographers. The following obituary was contributed to the local paper (The Callander Advertiser) and pulished on May 24th 1963. It was probably written by his brother Archie, local Callander and Macfarlane historian. 'In loving memory of Peter Macfarlane, died 20th May 1963 aged 63 years. This epitah, simplicity in itself, will no doubt be read by future generations of the Macfarlane Clan, not only by those in Callander, but by clansmen and women over a very much wider area. But perhaps they will never know that behind these words lies a remarkable story of one of Callanders most colourful characters, a man whose dynamic personality could have elevated him to a much higher rank in life had he chosen it that way. But strangely enough he was content to play the role of the rustic, the unconventional, bordering almost on eccentricity. Peter Macfarlane was no ordinary man. No high honours in education ever came his way, and his closet association with that noble seat of learning, the McLaren High School, was by virtue of the fact that he spent a lifetime only a stone throw from its portals. But in another sphere he gained not only an honour of the highest degree and was acclaimed a local hero, though for many years he was an almost forgotten hero. Amoungst his many treasured possessions was a silver watch presented to him for saving a boys life in the River Teith on 9th July 1919, and with it went the parchment scroll presented by the Royal Humane Society. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lays down his life for a friend". This may well have been the epitah to Peter Macfarlane on that summer day forty-four years ago; but he was spared to save the lives of nine others. Not long ago a man whose life Peter saved when he was a youth had the good fortune to win £70,000 in the football pools. One might ask did he reward the hero in any way? Oddly enough the answer is no. It seems (whole section indesipherable) tions. Nature in all her moods held for him a strong fascination, and he was never happier than when roaming the hills and rivers. His poaching days, he confided to his friends, were the happiest days of his life. The art of poaching had probably been inhertited from his ancestors, the "Wild Macfarlanes," who were conspicuous too in the days of clan warfare. In the archaeological field he could well have become something of an expert; for he was instrumental in helping to establish , beyound doubt that the Romans were encamped at Bochastle. His 'finds' of pottery, bronze, and coins were often a topic for conversation when he and his cronies would meet. Peter loved to live in the past. He had known too the horrors of war, for like the fearless youth he was, he ran from home to become a soldier, giving a false age. He was on the front line before his eighteenth birthday. Peter was an ardent lover of the works of the poet Robert W. Service, and his renderingsof 'Dangerous Dan McGrew' made one feel he could well be sitting in the famous 'Malamute Saloon.' Despite his ruggedness on the surface, Peter was kind and generous man and many of the wandering bodies of the highways were the better for having known him. He knew full well the taste of the 'water of life', and he knew too that 'John Barleycorn' was a fickle friend. His family records he could trace back to the late 1770's, and his slaters and plasterer's business founded by his great-grandfather. Tragedy entered the happy life of Peter Macfarlane in January of this year, when his wife passed on, and he never overcame his grief in the loss of his life companion. It is sad indeed that the time has come when his upright kilted figure will no longer be seen in Bridgend, and his daring deeds and exploits (and they were many) will now remain only memories. 2 - Used to compete at the Callander Highland Games at the tossing the Caber event. He and a couple of my other brothers had to live at Teithside in Bridgend with my grandparents for years as our 3 bed house wasnt big enough to accommodate us all! Mary and Harry were my grandparents. Janet (Auntie Jen) was my mother's aunt and as a child I spent many holidays with her in her little "shack" in Laingholm, Auckland. Janet did not marry. She was a career dental nurse who worked for many years at an Auckland school dental clinic. She once wrote and illustrated a little book of poems for children entitled Jabs at Giant Decay under the pen name of Javelin. Janet McFarlane was one of the first intake of dental nurses to train in NZ in 1921. I think she spent most of her working life at either New Lynn or Grey Lynn School Dental Clinic in Auckland. After her retirement in 1950 she spent her time writi ng letters and poems, playing the piano and painting beautiful pictures. She once had some paintings hung in an exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery. She was rather different!! She had her chooks, all named, walking in and out of her little house out at Laingholm. She also had numerous cats -- but then so did my grandmother Mary!! Janet and her older sister Christabel bought an acre of land at Laingholm. Janet had a little two roomed house built on one quarter, she sold another quarter to Basil Bain, a nephew-in-law, and Christabel built a house on the top section when sh e came back to New Zealand in 1957. Unfortunately she didn't get things moving for quite a while and had bought a house in Titirangi to live in until it was finished and she died before it was. Christabel had a Keith Hay house put onto the fourth quarter for Janet to live in as her own, by that time, was in a rather disgusting state. It was a nice little house, all furnished with a fridge and a proper toilet and bathroom -- things that h er little "shack" didn't have but was she happy? Oh no!! She loved her little shack and simply stayed put in it, but she did use the fridge to keep the cat's meat in!! Our dear old auntie Jen finally had to be moved from her little shack as it was in very poor repair -- all her lovely paintings and her beloved piano were ruined. She died in Tokanui, a home for the insane, on 23-May-1969 aged 79 Years. She is bur ied in the Hamilton Park Cemetery. I have often wondered whether her insanity could have been caused by the indiscriminate use of mercury in those days. | 1397 | 1 - The "Reverie" length 33 feet 6 inches was built for Mr. W. Fisher and he had great success with her. She was moored off the coast at Largs opposite his home (which is now called Lady Gowrie Drive) and near what is now the Largs Sailing Club. When she was sold in 1940's there had been unwritten agreement that when she was no longer wanted and to be sold that she was to be offered back to the McFarlane Family. A.J. (Jack) McFarlane and his life long friend Alan Cormack bought her and the sailed her with great success and won the Plympton Cup in 1946 Alan sold his share back to Jack as Alan had family commitments. In April 1947 whilst Jack was taking some friends on a week end fishing trip and was going along the Port River the Ketch "Annie Watt' ran into her and she sank to the bottom of the River. The next day Jack with his friend Mack Lawrie and the people from the Harbour's Board lifted her out of the water. She was slipped on Cruickshank's Corner (almost in front of the Birkenhead Tavern) and was repaired by Jack and his father "Tyz" McFarlane (who helped to build her in the 1898 in the family business), so the Reverie was back to her former glory. Jack continued to sail her until he died in 1951. The "Reverie" was sold on and had many owners some looked after her and some did not; a young chap bought her and whilst he was being restoring her at the North Arm she caught alight and was burnt out. A very sad end to a pretty "Gaff Sloop" that sailed well for many years and bought much delight to many people. [Word doc. Miss Jean Macfarlane Scott gives 1672 as the year that this branch 'came off the old Arrochar line' The chief evidence is a statement in the writing; of Francis, the third representative, found on the flyleaf of a family bible and copied by Henry James, the fifth representative, in 1849, the salient portion of which reads: "Macfarlane of that Ilk and Arrochar which had two sons, John, his brother (17th Chief -Ed) and Andrew of Ardess, who was my fathers grandfather. That is in the genealogy of our family which I received in the year 1763 from the late Walter MacFa rlane of that Ilk and Arrochar, the 22nd in direct line of male heir of the Earl of Lennox (20th from Gilchrist - Ed), wrote with«i» «/i»his own hand«i»-«/i» a man of great learning, a most ingenious antiquary, and by far thought the best genea logist in his time." The records of this family are in the custody of Captain Charles James Napier Macfarlane MA TCD JP CE of Newbury House, Santry, Co Dublin, Ireland, and include a family tree passed on by his father, Henry James. This family's Coat of Arms was sketched from a book plate, copied from the Arms on the old escutcheon, nearly two centuries ago. Henry James subsequently compared the two . The Royal«i» «/i»Crown in the crest rests upon a book, which Captain C. J . Napier MacFarlane was taught to believe represented Holy Writ. Captain Napier MacFarlane has also in his possession several plates of date 1728,«i» «/i»with the crest of Francis engraved upon them. This crest likewise shows the Royal Crown resting, upon a book.
