1705 | ADELAIDE (HOLLENBECK) MCFARLIN 1900 - 1999 by; Peter F McFarlin - 2008; Adelaide (Ruth?) Sutherland Hollenbeck was born in the Brooklyn Maternity Hospital on May 19 1900, the daughter of Everett and Adelaide (Sutherland) Hollenbeck of Brooklyn. In the 1900 US census (taken on June 1st) she is listed there as "Ruth" Ho llenbeck and is in the nursery room (6th fl) while her mother is in a private room on the 3rd floor. The hospital record may be in error or her name became Adelaide shortly after. EDUCATION AND GRAND TOUR The 1910 census finds the Hollenbeck family living at Curtis Terrace in Maplewood, a part of South Orange, New Jersey (NJ) where Adelaide, age nine, is attending school. In 1919 she is graduated from the Columbia High School of South Orange/Maplew ood. About 1920, Aunt Polly went to Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts (MA) and studied biology. Her first dissection was on a cat and she fainted. She soon dropped biology and decided to continue with her art interests at the Museum Schoo l (of Fine Arts) in Boston, MA. (# 2) In May of 1924, at age twenty three, Adelaide traveled with her parents to Europe on the SS Leviathan. She listed on her March passport her occupation as student and countries planned to visit were; British Isles, France, Belguim, Holland, Switzer land and Italy. MARRAIGE AND HOME She had met Kirk McFarlin in Maplewood NJ, while playing bridge at a mutual friend's house. They saw each other for a period and were married there in May of 1926. After honeymooning at Lake Placid they returned to their new home at 24 Delwick Lan e in Short Hills, NJ. Polly was interviewed in 1983 for some history of the Delwick Lane area (# 3). "My husband and I discovered this lovely little spot while we were horseback riding. At that time we were engaged.". I have lived at 24 Delwick La ne since the summer of 1926 when I moved into the house as a bride." Her home was designed by her husband Kirk and built by Bernhardt Mueller. "We knew that it would be a wise thing to have a dog, because we were almost alone on this street, and while we were trying to decide what kind of a dog we would get, I heard a scratch on the door one morning, and here was a little wire-haired fo x terrier wagging it's tail and he seemed to enjoy being here; we put him out at night and the next morning back he would come." The McFarlin's neighbor, Louis Kaufmann..."came over one morning and said he understood that his little dog Bubbles wa s very happy living with us." And so, Bubbles became their household pet while the Kaufmann children shared him on summer weekends when they were at their huge estate home across from the McFarlins there on Delwick Lane. Adelaide was first Episcopalian and later Christian Scientist, which was introduced to her through her husband Kirk. CHILDREN Around 1927-28 Adelaide (Polly) miscarried their first child; a girl. Kirk took Polly to relax in Bermuda in May/June of 1928. The 1930 census finds Adelaide and Kirk owning their home and with a maid. Their son Kirk Charles McFarlin was born Jul y 13 1930 in East Orange. His daughter Claire later shares that her grandma Polly almost named him Kirkpatrick, (after the longer version of his ancestor branch; the Kirkpatricks of Middlesex, PA. and 1700's NJ before that). When the Kirkpatrick s settled in Coitsville, OH in the early 1800's, they had shortened their surname to Kirk. Polly decided to also shorten it, after baby Kirk was born, "...she couldn't see giving such a small child, such a long name" (# 4). Aunt Polly later told P FM that they called young Kirk 'Peter', after a pet rabbit, so as to not call him 'junior'. Charles was sometimes used as his legal, original middle name. Adelaide and Kirk's last child was their son Everett Byrne McFarlin, born in East Orange, Oc t of 1933. Adelaide applied some of her art knowledge to designing patterns for china sets, and she later became an expert calligrapher, later teaching classes in the Millburn area. Her sister-in-law, Peggy McFarlin had also been a student at the Museum Scho ol in Boston (1926-1930) and she and Adelaide created wonderful little handmade christmas cards which they exchanged in the 1930's (# 1). MORE TRAVELS AND VISITS The following is from Claire (McFarlin) Viviani to PFM (# 4); "...Our trips were three. The first was in 1970, which Grandma Polly (Adelaide) took me on a 6 week guided tour of Europe, starting in England, by bus, and finishing in Italy. Absolute ly fabulous. The following year both Kirk and Adelaide took me to the Far East during my Christmas Holiday, for about 4 weeks. I especially remember celebrating my 16th birthday in Tokyo, which was our first stop. They had a Japanese friend that j oined us. After, we went to Kyoto and then Taipei and Manila. Then we returned to Taipei where we spent Christmas. Grandpa (Kirk) must have had some type of business he was taking care of during this trip as I met a couple more friends (Chinese) a nd one of their wives who joined us for dinner. Then it was on to Hong Kong and Bangkok and HuaHin. After this part of the trip we headed to Beirut and after that, home. This too was a wonderful experience, and I definitely got the impression tha t a lot of it was business, as Grandma and I did other things, like shopping, swimming and Kabuki Theater. "The last trip was with just Grandma, to Greece (ca 1974/5 - ed.). I was already in college, and I think it was because she had always wanted to go and had never had the opportunity, and she knew how much I loved Ancient History. Every summer, after we moved back to the States (from Guatemala to Ann Arbor in 1969 - ed.), I would try to go out and visit and I would spend a couple of weeks with them. Grandma taught me calligraphy (which she did so beautifully) and Japanese f lower arranging (Ikibana) and Chinese cooking with a real wok (in those days, that was impressive). We always managed to get in to New York at least once - by train, bus and subway, and go to the Metropolitan Museum, and could not come home unles s we stopped at Chock-Full-O-Nuts and bought a dozen of their donuts. I also would help Grandpa in the (home) office. This was after he had retired from his job in the city (which he too rode the train into), and had resumed working at home for Ri fe Hydraulic. I would help with typing letters, sending information to people who requested it and general office work." Adelaide's application for her SS number in October of 1955 indicated her employer at the time was the nearby Millburn High School (which, in 2008, became the top-rated high school in New Jersey). Her grand-daughter Gina McFarlin came to live wit h them (Polly and Everett) in 1984/1985 for a year and attended school there, graduating from Millburn High in 1985. After Polly's husband Kirk had passed on in 1977, she continued living in the Delwick Lane house with Everett until they both moved to Houston to be near her family; grand-daughters Gina and Lissa and occasionally, son Kirk, when he came to the st ates from Guatemala. Adelaide lived to be in her 100th year there in Houston and passed on in Oct of 1999. (Research):NOTES AND REFERENCES Peter had first learned of his aunt Polly McFarlin from his mother Peggy McFarlin and aunt Mary Applegate, while growing up and living in Wellesley, MA. 1708 | After the death of Richard Crabtree, Catherine took her youngest children and moved to her brother's farm. Is Sugar Creek the location of this farm? Catherine dies in 1920 and the children go to live with the Hardy Garren family. Two of the brothers are married to two of the Garren girls. Hardy Garren moved to Calhoun, Gordon co. and my daddy said they went to his home many times when he was a child. [Ancestry.com public tree Richard Crabtree McFarland Owner: MargaretBoruff] Mary Helen Haines notes: In the 1900 census in Gilmer Co. GA, Catherine and Richard say they have been married 15 years, so in 1885. She says she has 4 children, and 4 are alive, and that includes a Grover McFarland, age 13, birth date Feb. 1887. I have no idea if this is the same as Grover C. McFarland, born in 1883/4, who is also in the 1900 census living with his brother Henry B. | Curtis, Catherine A. (I28002)

1735 | ALBERT ANDERSON MCFARLIN (1908 to 1981) (Research by Peter F McFarlin, Dec 2013, revised Oct 2018.) Albert Anderson McFarlin was born in Kansas City Missouri, and was liv ing with his parents in Kansas City, Jackson co, Missouri in April o f 1910 for the U S Census. He was age 1and 4/12, with his older sister s Leota a 20, Mamie a 18, Elva a 15 . His older sister Phoebe had die d by 1910. In the 1920 census, Albert A McFarlin, a 11 and attending school, is w ith his father and mother and a lodger (Maude G Fulton a 20 - counte r girl at restaurant) living Belleville City, Republic co, Kansas. Hi s father was a restaurant proprietor. The 1925 Kansas State Census lists Albert a 16 with A A McFarlin a 5 9 (restaurant) and Anna a 53. Albert McFarlin and Neva (Elliott) were married by the 1929 Lawrence , Kansas city directory's listing where he is shown as a student, res . 911 1/2 Massachusetts. In 1930 the Census of Lawrence, Kansas has Albert A and Neva M McFarli n living at 941 Tennessee St. She is a saleslady in a gift shop and h e is not employed. No children listed. He apparently attended college for five years. (info found in the 194 0 Hays, Kansas census where his name is Bob McFarland.) Also listed in the 1940 census is their daughter Anna Low McFarland age 5. In the 194 8 Hays City inumeration list Alber t A McFarlin is listed with 3 person s in the family - possibly their daughter Anna? By 1963 they were listed in the Hays, Kansas City directory; Alber t A McFarlin, editor Hays Daily News. Mrs Neva M McFarlin is the vic e president of The News Publishing Co. Albert McFarlin SS # 512-07-0066 of 67601 Hays, Ellis, Kansas died Ja n 1981. Neva Meriam McFarlin SS # 509-10-4768, apparently moved to 345 Esplana de, Irvine CA 92612 where she died 4 Aug 1988. They are both buried in the Mount Allen Cemetery in Hays, Kansas. | McFarlin, Albert Anderson (I16198)

1736 | Albert Ross was born in (Youngstown?) Ohio in 1854, the son of William H and Harriet Ross, both born in Pennsylvania. In 1860, Albert, the youngest at seven, is attending school with his three older sisters. His father is a lime burner at a Youngs town foundry, and his oldest brother, James Ross age twenty-two, is married and a saloon keeper on his own. By 1870 Albert's father is not listed in the census and his (widowed?) mother is shown with $10,000 value in real estate and $500 in personal estate. This is a large sum for those times and may reflect some payment for her husband's death? In an y event, Albert's brother James with his daughter and new wife Mary, have joined the Ross' household in Youngstown. James is still a saloon keeper and Albert at seventeen, has work as a "roll turner" in a steel mill. I'm fairly sure Albert is still located in Youngsstown in 1880, but this needs confirmation by census or business directory. In 1881 Albert marries Olive McFarland (*1). In 1900, Albert is renting a house on Spring Street in Youngstown, and is a " supt of Roll" in the census. By 1910 he and Olive have moved to Forsythe Ave, Columbus, Ohio, where they own their own home, and he continues in the steel industry as a roll turner for a chain company. In 1920, at age sixty-five, his occupation is still a roll turner for a ch ain company, living at the same address. Albert Ross is not located in the 1930 census and may have died by then. Photocopies of the vital records pages in that bible, plus copies of other vital record notes and letters, were given to Peter F McFarlin in 1974, by his uncle, Charles Kirk McFarlin, in Short Hills, New Jersey, who had the bible and no tes in his possession at that time. | Ross, Albert (I16372)

1742 | ALEXANDER MCFARLAND - COITSVILLE, OHIO (and Wisconsin) BLACKSMITH (181 1 to 1883) (Research by Peter Folsom McFarlin - May, 2012, updated May, 2019) Alexander McFarland was born Nov first 1811 in Coitsville, in (then) T rumbull co, Ohio at his parents home south of the village center. He w as the oldest of nine surviving children and was named after his fathe r. Williams states that most of Alexander's seven sons and two daughters , "settled in this vicinity" (*1 p 168). This Alexander's name and bir thdate was taken from the IGI and his father's estate settlement. In March, 1833, the inventory of his father's estate states, "... Alex , late of Poland...", and later states, "...goods set off to widow an d children; sale held 16 Apr 1833... Alex, of Coitsville... some of th e buyers were: Andrew, Margaret, Wi lliam, and Alexander McFarlane... p artial settlement, mentions cash paid to Alex. McFJr and Andrew McF.. . "(*2) This son Alexander, born 1811, is likely helping his mother, Margare t settle his father's 1833 estate as shown above. About 1835 he marrie d Mary Lane of nearby Poland Ohio, daughter of shoemaker Samuel Lane , born in Maryland. By 1840, Alexander McFarland is living just south of Coitsville in Pol and, Ohio almost next to his older brother John. Alexander is "engage d in manufacture and trade", likely blacksmithing. He has just his wif e and two little boys under five li ving there with him. In 1850 "Alex " is living in Coitsville, next to his widowed mother, Margaret McFarl and. He and his wife Mary have six children now with the two oldest bo ys; Alex age 14 and Samuel age 12. Nearby in Poland lives his wife Ma r y's father Samuel Lane, shoemaker. Around 1852 their fourteen year-old son Samuel died. (Alex and Mary i n 1857 have a another son they named Samuel.) In 1855, Alexander McFarlin(sic) bought a section of land in Wisconsin . Between 1855 and 1858, Alex, Mary and six children moved to Grand Ma rsh, Adams co, Wisconsin. They are listed there in 1860 with a new so n Samuel and (Mary's father) Samue l Lane, retired shoemaker, who is he lping run the home farm while Alex continues blacksmithing. Then in 18 70 they are all in Lincoln, Adams co Wisconsin where Alex continues bl acksmithing. Their son Stewart has now married and lives next door w it h his wife Frances Mary and baby daughter. Adjacent to Stewart lives A lex's daughter Sarah her son Samuel and daughter Amanda. So, four of t he children have come to Wisconsin to settle alongside their parents . Also in this family community i s Mary McFarlin's father Samuel Lane , back to shoemaking at age 79. SAMUEL WINEGAR A curious parallel is noted here. In the 1840 Poland, Ohio census ther e is a certain Samuel "Wingar" listed between Alexander McFarland (bla cksmith) and his brother John McFarland. In 1850 this Samuel "Wingard " had moved to Walworth co, Wiscons in. In 1860 Samuel "Wyenger" and fa mily were living in Grand Marsh, Adams co, Wisconsin, as was Alexande r McFarland and his family. Then, in 1870 Samuel "Winegar" and Alexand er McFarland and their families were in the same town; Lincoln, Ada m s co, Wisconsin. Ten years later in 1880, Samuel "Winegar" and his so n Frank were living next door to William McFarland and (brother) Stewa rt McFarland. This constant connection of families and places usuall y means intermarraige, but just wha t the connection is has not been de termined yet. The Lincoln, Wisconsin 1880 census lists blacksmith Alex McFarlin an d wife Mary with 22 year-old son Samuel who is helping on their home f arm. Important note; Alex's father is listed as born in Ireland. Als o living nearby are their other two so ns, William and Stewart, each wi th their own homes and families. Seventy-one year-old Samuel C Winega r is living next to the two McFarlin sons. Alexander McFarlin died 14 Dec 1883 in Adams co, Wisconsin and his wif e Mary died 13 Dec 1891. They both were buried in the Newchester cemet ery, Grand Marsh , Adams co, Wisconsin with many of their family. 1743 | Alexander McFarland purchased land in what became the town of Oakham in 1742 and built on the land in 1749. His land was next to George Harper, the brother of his wife Jean Harper. Their land was on the county road to Spencer. The Harpers, Bells, Hendersons, Bothwells, and Alexander McFarland were among the founders of this town. They also were identified with the Presbyterian church and the part of the town where they lived was called "Dublin." Alexander's daughters all married men from these families. They built a community Presbyterian church and finally was able to hire a full-time minister, but that only lasted about 10 years, and ended in 1772. It is interesting that in his father Duncan's will, he did not call Alexander his son, but he did leave him a small behest. It appears there was a religious falling out between Alexander and his father. It has something to do with the Harper family because of the Duncan stipulation that son Daniel not marry Betsey Harper, who I assume is the sister of Alexander's wife Jean. Before it was incorporated in 1762 as Oakham, it was called Rutland West Wing. After incorporation, Alexander McFarland served in many official positions, such as Constable in 1764. His son Reuben can also be found in the rolls as an officer, and in 1818 a Daniel McFarland is listed as a town officer. I assume he is a son of Reuben. Information can be found in The Settlement and Story of Oakham Massachusetts, by H.B. Wright and E.D. Harvey, 1947. | McFarland, Alexander (I20953)

(Research):PFM's sources for Alice K McFarland; 1850 census; Coitsville, Ohio p 584, Anderson and Sarah McFarland were living on the Hazelton road between the McCartney and Vale farms. Other References *1 McFarlin; 2008 Many of the McFarlin births, marriages, and deaths, with the names, are from the 1832 William McFarland bible, presented to his grandson, William Kirk McFarlin by Wm K's mother, Sarah (Kirk) McFarland, March 9, 1877 (1897?). Ph otocopies of the vital records pages in that bible, plus copies of other vital record notes and letters, were given to Peter F McFarlin in 1974, by his uncle, Charles Kirk McFarlin, in Short Hills, New Jersey, who had the bible and notes in his po ssession at that time. | McFarland, Alice K (I352)
