Daniel intended to marry a girl named Betsey Harper and filed papers of his intent in 1745; however his father objected so strongly that he put in his will that he would be disinherited if he did so. Robert and Mary? had a daughter, Marion Thomas Macfarlane (my grandmother) DOB 05/03/1900 Govan (died 20/01/1965 in Sydney Australia) and a son, Allan (no other details of DOB or place of birth, or further lineage). Marion married my grandfather, David Easson in Glasgow (no date), DOB 05/04/1886 Glasgow,(died 06/05/1974 in Sydney Australia). David was previously married in Chester to a Mabel Penny, I have further info on their children if you are interested. Marion & David may have come to Australia I believe on a ship called the OTRANTO but have not been able to confirm that. (Maybe there is a ship manefesto somewhere out there). The family returned to NZ when he was very young and he grew up in Wellington. 2529 Sapper I T Macfarlane, NZ Engineers. 2NZEF troop lists give his next of kin as Mrs H Macfarlane (mother), 27 Fairview Crescent, Kelburn, Wellington. He was one of the first to enlist in WW2 and sailed from NZ with the First Echelon in January 1940. He fought in Greece, Crete, Western Desert, Tunisia and Egypt. He was evacuated from Crete on the last ship to leave. Wounded 21 Jan 1943. He was a prisoner of war (held by the Italians) for about 6 weeks and was one of 349 NZ soldiers who returned to NZ in June 1943 on furlough. Many (including Ian) refused to go back to the war. He is quoted in the Official War History of the NZ Engineers (p289-290) and later wrote of his war experiences in a private manuscript "Diary of a Despatch Rider", typed (and later retyped as a Word document by his son Peter) but never published Became an orchardist in Nelson area (Malling Road, Redwoods Valley) 1951 to 1968 then semi-retired to live in Richmond (owning Dorset House) for health reasons. Died 20 April 1986 as the result of an accident (fell from ladder). I do not believe that these two lines are from the same father, although I have seen the claim on one tree that he is. About 2.5 million Canadian dollars were belived to be involved. The eventual outcome of this search is unknown, but it is belived that the housekeeper contested the will and won, some if not all the inheritance due to the years of serice she had given looking after him and nursing him in his old age. At last he took suddenly ill with a heart attack. He was able to go homme, his home being in Glendale, Arizona, but he didn't live long as he got worse fast. The Lord was so good to him. | 2136 | In his marriage certificate, it states his name is William Thompson. Why would he go by Thomas? Was there a mistake in his marriage certificate? William T. and this family is somewhat a mystery. In 1850, Wm. T. is the son of John H. in the census in St. Francois County. He is 14 and there seems no question of that, considering he falls in the middle of a slew of children born 2 years apart. In the 1860 census he is married, age 24, and living with his wife Irena in Iron Mt. in the Liberty township and has a male child W. H. that is 6 months old. In the 1870 census, he is going by Thomas and now says he is 40, which is off by 4 years and now has two more children, Jennie, 7, and Edward, 5. In the 1880 census they are all gone. John H., his father, moved to East St. Louis between 1870 and 1880. It seems that William Thomas did also, but it is a mystery about his wife Irene and the children. Is the William McFarland, husband of Elisabeth McKensie, the same person as William T. McFarland? We know by DNA testing of a descendant of William McFarland and wife Elizabeth that they are part of the same group of McFarlands, but have not seen definite proof that the two Williams are the same. In 1880 there is a McFarland, living in East St. Louis, age 40, with wife Lissie, born in Ohio, parents both from Ireland, and a daughter named Jennie age 9, born in Missouri, father MO and mother Ohio, so appears to be their child. In 1900, William McFarland, with birth date listed as January 1840 is living in East St. Louis, married 25 years to Elisabeth. She has given birth to 4 children all alive still and living with them. The oldest, James, was born in Missouri, the rest in Illinois. In 1910, T. W. McFarland, 69, born MO, with father born NC and mother born MO lis living in Ward 1, Dist. 102, in East St. Louis, St. Clair Co. Illinois with wife Lizzie, 55, born Ohio, parents from Ireland. Both T.W. and Lizzie have been married before, and have been married 34 years. She has given birth to 4 children, all alive. There is a daughter, Goldie, 23, born in Illinois, and another daughter Frances, 18, now married for half a year, to Ben Trilley, also 18, born in east St. Louis and living with them.
