3002 | Goodspeed's for South East Missouri has an article about Andrew J. McFarland on page 875. " Andrew J. McFarland, farmer who was born in Madison County, Mo., in 1837, is a son of Arthur and Louisa (Morrow) McFarland, and grandson of John McFarland, a native of Virginia, who immigrated to Christian County, Kentucky at an early age. Arthur McFarland was born in Christian county, Ky. in 1795 and was of Scotch-Irish descent. He left his native county and State in 1816, and began working at the Mine La Motte mines, but in connection with this followed farming until 1832, when her married Miss Louisa Morrow, who was born in the territory of Upper Louisiana in 1810. Her father Thomas Morrow, who was of Irish descent was born in 1773 in Canada, and came to Missouri about 1797. He settled at St. Charles, while there he was married. In 1803 he moved to Farmington Mo., and a year later he settled six miles southwest of St. Michael (now Fredericktown). He died in 1867. Arthur McFarland settles three miles west of Fredericktown after his marriage, and was occupied the principal part of his life in tilling the soil. He died in 1881. Mr. McFarland and Mr. Morrow were two of the pioneer settlers of Southeast Missouri, and especially Madison County. Mrs. Louisa McFarland is yet living and has a remarkably good memory, relating facts with accuracy that occured when she was a little girl. She is the mother of eight children, six now living: Andrew J, James E, Mary Jane, Martha Ann (wife of Bynum Maze), Eliza E. and Henry B.W. Andrew J. attained his majority on the farm and in 1850 married Miss Sarah F. daughter of John M. Gholson. Mrs. McFarland was born in the house in which she now resides in 1840, and by her marriage became the mother of two children-William A. and John G. Mr. McFarland has resided in his native county all his life, and has never lived over six and one half miles from Fredericktown. He has made his home three years where he now resides. He is a sucessful farmer, and now owns 195 acres of land. He is politically a Democrat, casting his first vote for J.C. Bell in 1860. He and his wife have been members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South for the past twenty years. His mother has also been a member of the same church for forty years." In 1910 Andrew McFarland is living in Castor township, Madison Co. with his two sisters and his aunt Elizabeth Morrow. Another source says he (John McFarland) married February 23, 1798 in Christian Co. KY to Elizabeth Turnheart. | McFarland, Andrew J. (I23501)

3013 | Hannah is a big mystery. The only census record that is certainly her is the 1881 census record. There is a Hannah McFarlane who appears in Whitehaven, Cumberland Co. born 1836 to a John and Mary McFarlane from Scotland, but she appears to have married a man named Campbell by the 1871 census with a baby girl named Cathleen, born that year in Manchester England. Have not found any more information on Hannah's origins, her death, and/or information about husband James Wilson, born in Scotland in 1845. | McFarlane, Hannah HaM01 (I14341)

3016 | Hard to know what exactly happens with his marriages. It seems that his first wife is Sarah J. Smith, who possibly died in childbirth. They do not appear together in any census report, yet William E. was born in 1864, and there is a big gap between him and the next siblings that show up in the 1880 census. In the 1870 census William E. McFarland is living with another family in Madison Co., and Jesse is working as a clerk in a store in Iron, St. Francois Co. living in the household of Jesse McFarland, age 50, and wife Sarah J. | McFarland, Jesse Jason (I31123)

3020 | Has there been a big mix-up, or just lots of bad information in the census records? In the 1850 census, Wm. Jones and Charles L. Jones from Tennessee are living with the Sloan family in Lafayette Missouri. The Sloan daughter, Missouri, is living with the family next door. Then in 1860 Wm M. Jones, 34, from Illinois, is living with wife M.A.Jones, 29, in Beat 1, Bonham, in Fannin Co. with son Charles L. 9, and Wm. H. 6. So now Charles is two years younger than before, if he is the same boy. Then following this same family in Fannin Co. to 1880, three more children are added, and they are living a few homes away from Alexander and Nancy Sloan. In the 1900 census, Missouri is a widow, age 70, living with James Jones, 29, and his family. In this census, they state their birthdates, and Missouri says she was born in May 1830, instead of the Feb. 1831 date given by researchers. She also states her father was born in Virginia and her mother in Missouri, which is not the case, but who knows how together her mind may have been. | Sloan, Missouri Ann (I31227)

3021 | Have no knowledge about this child. There is an unaccounted for John J. (or G.) McFarland in the 1840 census, living in Liberty with a wife and two children, one male, one female, and one older woman, on same page as the rest of the McFarlands of St. Francois Co. However, I believe this is Jesse Jackson McFarland, son of Jesse McFarland, living with his widowed mother. However, I believe that this John McFarland may have been a first son, born before Newton. He may have been the father of Robert McFarland, who appears as a one-seventh heir of the estate of John and Mary Fleming McFarland after John's death in Texas. He may also have been married to a Rebecca, because there is an unaccounted for Rebecca McFarland on the 1843 census for Texas in Fannin County. Mystery!! Have no knowledge about this child.
