| 4098 | Arrived in America prior to 1850. Came with brother William J. Bootmaker, Mechanic, Civil War veteran, Dry goods dealer, Baker, Market gardener. Received a pension (disabled?) Lived in Medway and Wrentham MA, eventually moved to Braintree. Civil War Information obtained from http://www.pacivilwar.com/freepension.html on 30 May 2005: Private, Co B, 42 Mass Infantry. Enlisted from Braintree MA 12 Sep 1862, Discharged 24 Aug 1863 (11 mos, 9 days) with rupture. Listed as living in Holbrook MA. Military Record: Alexander McGaw (claimed residence in Wrentham), worked as a Machinist. He enlisted in the Union Army on September 3, 1862 [age either 32 or 29] as a Private at alleged age 31 (cf the date he gave in 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census, which is 1833, not 1831). He served in B Company of the Massachusetts 42nd Infantry Regiment (sent to the New Orleans area). He mustered out at Readville, MA on 20 August 1863 discharged with a disability - "Rupture". Source: "Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the Civil War" Published by Adjutant General 1931-37. He received an Army Pension on June 6 1890. The Massachusetts 42nd Infantrey Regiment had the following Regimental History: Battle at Galveston, Texas on 01 January 1863 Battle at Louisiana Fourche Crossing, Louisiana on 21 Jun 1863 Battle at Brashear City, Louisiana on 23 June 1863 Battle on 24 June 1863 In the 1860 Census, he stated he was a Bootmaker. In the 1880 Census he and his wife Sarah and children are shown in Braintree, MA. At that time he was a Dry Goods Dealer, claiming to have been born in Scotland (as were his parents). In the 1900 Census, he is shown as a Shoemaker living at 5 Washington Street in South Braintree, MA (now Route 37 - just south of South Street in Braintree) with his son, Austin L. McGaw (a Farm Laborer). Interestingly, Herbert L. Phillips and Family (Frank Z. Phillips' brother) also live at the same address. He states he was born in Feb 1833 (Note - in the 1860 Census he stated he was born in 1831) in Ireland, that both of his parents were born in Scotland, that he came to the US in 1852 and that he is a naturalized citizen. (See Mary Elizabeth Cummings for a view of the 1900 Census) Vital Records for the birth of his son, Adin Theo. (and other records), state he was born in Belfast, Ireland (as was [brother] William J. McGaw). After the death of Mary Elizabeth Cummings in 1872, Alexander McGaw (then a Baker) married Sarah J. Freel (or Friel) (age 24 b. So. Braintree, daughter of Daniel and Sarah) in Boston in 1876. She died in 1887 (or 1898) in Braintree. Alexander McGaw is listed in the 1888 Braintree, MA Directory as a "market gardener" living on Washington Street near the Holbrook town line, South Braintree, and in the 1892 Directory as a "farmer" at the same address. In the 1900 Census, two of his sons (David and Lewis) both said that he was born in Scotland. Clara E. Phillips and William H. McGaw both said he was born in Massachusetts. But he, himself, states he was born in Ireland. | McGaw, Alexander (I1048)
|
| 4099 | Arrived in America with brother Alexander prior to 1850. Married in Norfolk County MA to Susan Cummings. Possibly remarried later to Jane Ferguson (?). (Note: 1860 census lists a Jane Fallon or Ballon as a 20-year-old domestic in the McGaw house. She had a daughter Jane of 4 months age at the time. It is possible that the mother is the Jane in question. She was born in England.) Apparently lived in both Medway and Wrentham MA Listed as Farmer on 1860 Census Settled in Wrentham (where he died?) | McGaw, William J. (I1051)
