5938 | Robert M. McFarlin (July 27, 1866 ? August 11, 1942) was an American oilman, cattle rancher, philanthropist, and businessman who is best known for amassing a fortune by drilling for oil near Glenpool, Oklahoma with his nephew and son-in-law, James A. Chapman. He was among the early pioneer oilmen who established the state of Oklahoma as a center of the oil industry in the early part of the 20th Century. Robert McFarlin was born July 27, 1866 to Porter and Caroline McFarlin in Ovilla, Texas (near Waxahachie). He married Ida Barnard in 1886. They moved to the town of Norman, then in Oklahoma Territory, in 1890, where they worked as cattle farmers and operated a feed store, During this time, their only son was born and died. They then moved to a farm in Indian Territory near the town of Holdenville in 1895. McFarlin and Chapman had first partnered in 1903, to create the Holdenville Oil and Gas Company, which owned 10 acres (4.0 ha) in the middle of the Glenn Pool oil field. In 1912, after the discovery of the even larger Cushing Oil Field, the two founded the McMan Oil Company, which they sold to the Magnolia Petroleum Company in 1916 for $39 million dollars. In 1918, McFarlin built an office building at 5th and Main in Tulsa, thereafter known as the McFarlin Building. The building still serves as a general office building. Also in 1918, McFarlin and Chapman organized the McMan Oil and Gas Company, which they sold to the Dixie Oil Company, a subsidiary of Standard Oil Company of Indiana, for $20 million in 1922. In 1910, McFarlin, Harry Sinclair and some others organized the Exchange National Bank of Tulsa, which later became the National Bank of Tulsa, and is now the Bank of Oklahoma (BOK). McFarlin's philanthropy centered on churches and higher education. The most significant projects funded by the McFarlin family included: McFarlin College was the proposed name of a college, to be located in the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was initially proposed that the new institution of higher education be a Methodist-affiliated college. It ceased to exist as an entity when it merged with Henry Kendall College in 1920 to form the University of Tulsa. In 1929, he contributed $450,000 to build the McFarlin Library of the University of Tulsa, which is still in use. In 1924, the Methodist Church South in Norman called on Robert McFarlin during a fund raising drive to build a new church building. Remembering the support given by the church when their infant son had died in Norman, the McFarlins made a generous contribution toward the new building. In addition, they established an endowment to support maintenance of the church. The contribution was valued at $600,000 in 1924. McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, located in Norman, Oklahoma stands in honor of his contributions to the United Methodist Church. In 1925, the McFarlin family donated $600,000 to build the McFarlin Auditorium on the Southern Methodist University campus in Dallas, Texas. He was married to Ida May Barnard (February 12, 1868 - November 18, 1938). Ida died of a cerebral hemorrhage in a San Antonio hospital, and was buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Norman, Oklahoma. Robert died August 11, 1942 in Kansas City, Missouri, and was also buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Norman. They had two daughters and one son. Their son, Robert Boger, was born in 1891 died of typhoid fever at the age of one month and 19 days. His nephew and partner, Chapman, had married their daughter, Leta Mae, in 1908. Both Robert and Ida McFarlin were inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1935. The McFarlin house at 1610 S. Carson Ave. in Tulsa, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 25, 1979, under National Register Criteria C, and its NRIS number is 79002030. (Research by Peter Folsom McFarlin - May, 2012, rev Oct 2018) Williams states that most of Alexander's seven sons and two daughter s "settled in this vicinity" (*1 p 168). This Robert's name and approx imate birthdate was taken from his father Alexander's estate settlemen t. In March, 1833, the inventory of his father's estate states, "... Ale x, late of Poland..." and, later that, "...Goods set off to widow an d children; Sale held 16 Apr 1833... Alex of Coitsville, some of the b uyers were: Andrew, Margaret, Willia m, and Alexander McFarlane... part ial settlement, mentions cash paid to Alex. McF, Jr and Andrew McF ". Further, that; "... James and Samuel made their o wn choice..." (*2) In 1850 Robert is living in Coitsville with his mother Margaret and br other James. 5941 | ROBERT WARNER MCFARLIN (1837 - 1917) (Researched by Peter Folsom McFarlin, May 16th, 2018) Robert Warner McFarlin's father, James McFarland, was born about 179 5 in (County Tyrone?) Ireland and came to Pennsylvania in 1796 at abou t age one with his parents, three older brothers and two older sisters . They were early Scots pioneers who arrived in Hopewell (New Bedford ) western Pennsylvania about 1799 a nd then to Coitsville, Ohio about 1 802. Robert's parents, James and Melissa (Hard) McFarlin lived together i n Coitsville for about eighteen years after their marraige in 1819 o r 1820. They had seven children, while James was active in the busines s of distilling. Robert was born May , 1837 (*1 and 1900 census), likel y in Coitsville, Ohio. His father James died in 1838 at age fifty three and his estate finish ed probate in June 1841. A John Stewart was appointed guardian to al l the children including; Sarah M McFarlin, age 8, Lysander J McFarlin , age 6 and "Robert W McFarlin, ag e 4" (*2). However in the 1850 Coits ville census Robert, age thirteen, was not listed with his mother an d her other children, nor could I find him in other censuses. Robert m ay have been in another household at the time because by 1860, he i s l ikely the Robert McFarland laborer age 23, who is found in the Viola , Illinois household of the farmer John Sample. Also in 1860, his futu re wife, Frances L Gillespie was living with her parents in nearby Ale do, Illinois. The American Civil War came and Robert W McFarlin, age 24, joined th e Union Army as a private in Company H, 8th Reg't of the Kansas Infant ry. He was enrolled for three years on Aug 1st 1861 in Moline, Illinoi s and was mustered in Aug 8th 1861 i n Quincy, Illinois. He was in Frem ont's Cavalry Body Guard and Robert H Graham's Cavalry Co which was so on attached to the 14th Missouri Infantry (Union). Robert was, "Take n prisoner at Lexington, Sept 20th 1861, Released on taking oath Sep t 2 0th 1861" (*3). This was known as the 'First Battle of Lexingon' a s well as the 'Battle of the Hemp Bales' or the 'Seige of Lexington' , and lasted from Sept 13 to Sept 20th, 1861. Robert was apparently am ong the 3000 Union soldiers captured i n this Union loss. There was; "N o record subsequent to Sept 19th, 1861", perhaps because of his oath t aken for his release. He was mustered out Oct 16 1861 in St Louis Miss ouri. Later, Robert was granted 'Invalid Status', June 28th 1880, du e t o 'age'. He was then forty-three and apparently rec'd a pension fo r this. Robert returned to the Rivoli, Illinois area and married Frances Gille spie in 1863. In 1870 their P.O. was New Windsor where they had thre e children. His mother Melissa, age sixty-seven was also living wit h them. By 1880 they had seven childre n including William Herschel ag e five. In 1900 Robert and Frances had been married thirty-six years a nd were still on their home farm with James, Myrtle, Ada and Sylvanu s still with them. They reported that ten of their twelve children wer e st ill living. By 1910 Robert and Frances had moved to Long Beach, California with My rtle and Sylvanus. They owned their own home while living off their ow n income. He reported that he was a survivor of the Civil War. France s died in 1913 and Robert Warner Mc Farlin died in March of 1917 and wa s buried in Sunnyside Cemetery, Long Beach, California. All the following spellings of Robert's last name and family names ar e verbatum from the written records; 1820 census; Coitsville, Trumbull co, Ohio p 239; James McFarland (an d Melissa? age 16-26) no children yet. 1830 census; Coitsville, Trumbull co, Ohio p 249; James McFarland wit h children and female (Melissa) 1840 census; Coitsville, Trumbull co, Ohio p 190; Melissa McFarlan d a 30-40 with children.
