Richard Stephen McFarlane,

I recently received results from Family Tree DNA and found you listed as a probable relative.

From looking at your GEDCOM file, I recognize that we are indeed relatives.

My father was John Clark McFarlane, who was the son of James McFarlane and brother to Arthur McFarlane who I see is your grandfather.

I am one of five children by his second wife: Gladys Openshaw.
Dad died in 1953 when I was 17 and mother died at 93 in the year 2000.

A year ago at my brother's (Gary) funeral a relative I hadn't seen for 55 years introduced himself as Verl Harold McFarlane, son of Harold McFarlane who was a son of my father and his first wife (Alice Liddle). It was a good reunion and subsequen t visits allowed us to catch up on what has happened over the many years of not knowing each other and not knowing how to find each other.

I live in Oregon and am interested in connecting with as many family members as I can find.
I have good memories of your grandfather. I am attaching a photo which I got after the death of my mother. (sorry the quality is not that great)

Best regards,

James Craig McFarlane

This connection may well not be right because as far as I can tell using these connections this Margaret is named after her fathers cousins mother-in-law.
I would have thought if you were going to name your daughter after another family member that the link should be a little less obscure.

Lou Helen McFarland Box Lou Helen ``Johnnie'' McFarland Box went to her Heavenly Rest on Monday, June 3, 2002. She was 96. She was born into a pioneer Texas family, July 22, 1905, Dublin, Erath County, Texas. She was the first born of Samuel Arthur McFarland and Pearl Teagle McFarland. At an early age she and her family returned to their ``roots'' in Burnet, Burnet County, Texas, where she grew up, graduated from high school and spent the last forty years of her life. The McFarland's came to Texas from Tennessee at the suggestion of their friend Sam Houston. Her mother's family came to Texas from Virginia in 1883. Her great grandfather George Jackson McFarland, M.D., was a Burnet County physician, her grandfather fought in the last Texas Indian battle on Pack Saddle Mountain, Llano County, and her father was a long time Burnet businessman. Dr. George Jackson McFarland once owned ``Granite Mountain'' in Marble Falls whose granite stone was later used to build the Texas State Capitol Building in Austin. He traded it for a team of horses and a buggy, saying, ``There was not enough grass on the whole mountain to support one cow.'' On September 18, 1927 she was married to James Ellis Box, Sr. of Lone Grove, Llano County, Texas. She spent 53 years as an elementary school teacher in the Texas Public School System. She loved teaching and her students. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Alpha Chi Chapter, a founding member of the Burnet County Genealogical Society, a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and active in establishing the Fort Croghan Museum which is dedicated to the preservation of Burnet County history. She is survived by her three children, James Ellis Box, Jr. Ph. D. and wife Diane, Athens, Georgia, Jamye Lou Box Boriack, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Richard Arthur Box, D.D.S. and his wife Lynn, Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren, Brent Box, M.D., Rebecca Box Davis, D.D.S., Mark Box, Craig Box, M.D., Lee Boriack, Ted Boriack, Clark Boriack; fourteen great grandchildren, Andrew Davis, Kristin Davis, Laura Davis, Mariel Box, J.B. Box, Mary Beth Box, John David Box, James Boriack, Paul Boriack, Erin Box, Zane Box, Patrick Box, C. J. Box and Kevin James Box; by a sister, Carmen McFarland Parker of Burnet, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Frances McFarland Webb, and a brother, Don Carlos McFarland. The family wishes to give special thanks to Drs. George Willeford, III, Robert Askew, Sr., and Bruce Malone for giving extra years to Lou Helen's life. Also, we wish to thank Dr. Scott Piotrowski for his great compassion and care in her final days. And finally, to Billie Mills, her caregiver, whose loyalty and steadfastness was a solid rock. Her grandchildren will be her pallbearers. Visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2002 at the Edgar Funeral Home, Burnet, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 7, 2002, at the First Methodist Church in Burnet with Rev. Russell Minton, officiating. Burial will follow at the Post Mountain Cemetery in Burnet under the direction of Edgar Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in Lou Helen's name to the First United Methodist Church of Burnet, PO Box 1279, Burnet, TX 78611.

from 'The barons of Arrochar and their cadets' a manuscript by Chevalier Terrance Gach MacFarlane; chapt. 6 - 23c

2 - A communication received from James Francis Lenox, the sixth representative, whose address was Mill Bay, Cobble Hill, British Columbia, is as follows:
"As regards my family, some 20 years ago a Colonel MacFarlane of Perth wrote to my father saying that for some years he and some other members of the Clan had been making investigations as to who was the head of the Clan. They came to the concl usion that my father was, and asked him if he had the old escutcheon which used to be hung upon the church for a certain period after the death of the Chief, when it was handed over to the custody of the new Chief. This having been in our po ssession for many generations it was considered proof that Col. MacFarlane's conclusion was correct. This article, upon which was painted that Coat of Arms, was about 3 1/2 feet x 3 1/2 feet and diamond shaped. Some time ago my father wished t o have a copy painted as it was showing signs of age, and he lent it to a sister-in-law of mine who is a painter, Miss A.G. McKay, and I never saw it again. I fear it has been mislaid. I would give a good deal to get it back as it was a g ood many hundred years old."
This family's Coat of Arms was sketched from a book plate, copied from the Arms on the old escutcheon, referred to above, nearly two centuries ago. Henry James subsequently compared the two. The Royal«i» «/i»Crown in the crest rests upon a book, w hich Captain C. J. Napier MacFarlane was taught to believe represented Holy Writ.
Captain Napier MacFarlane has also in his possession several plates of date 1728, with the crest of Francis engraved upon them. This crest likewise shows the Royal Crown resting, upon a book.
James Francis Lenox, now in British Columbia, was born on 7 April 1845 and married Elizabeth Odette, daughter of Manners McKay of Moreen, Co Dublin. They had two sons and one daughter, Walter Lenox, Selby Lenox and Maud.

2 - My Grandmother was Mary Graham McFarlane born 1899 Waipu NZ. Her Father was John MacFarlane (ID.1820) The Scots seem to put all their children on the Headstone (which is great for genealogy) but John (ID.1820) was buried at Waipu Cemetery NZ.

3 - I have John's death certificate and he died 27th April 1929 aged 75, but then I have been to Waipu cemetery and taken a picture of the head-stone and it reads 27th June 1927 aged 70, I also have his marriage certificate and old perochial birth register.
I am having trouble finding out when John came to NZ, on his death certificate it says he was in NZ for 45 yrs so that makes it about 1884.I do know that he came by himself and sailed direct to Otago (South Island) then made his way up to Waipu, and married Catherine McMillan 28 January 1888. Catherine's parents came to NZ with Norman McLeod from Novia Scotia but not John.
In Waipu Cemetery the McFarlane Family were buried at the far back, out of the way of the Novia Scotians - but in recent years they changed the entrance and are now in the front.

2 - Obituary of George "Max" David Alexander Macfarlane
G. "Max" David Alexander Macfarlane (February 14, 1931 - April 2, 2019)
Max was born February 14, 1931, in Bulawayo, South Rhodesia, Africa. Max passed away with his family at his side on April 2, 2019 after battling two forms of Cancer. Anybody who knew Max, knew he had a fighter's spirit, and he carried that with him until the end.

Max was a well, spoken, pragmatic, intelligent man. He had a wicked sense of humor, and a lust for life. He adored his wife, children and grandchildren. He was passionate about his family, his work and his legacy. Max lived his life in spite of adversity that might have discouraged a lesser man. Military service, marriage, fatherhood, his Accounting practice: all were executed with precision and an uncommon attention to detail. Max insisted that "tomorrow is not an option, and it is later than you think, so get on with it!". He demanded that things were done right, and relished an opportunity to demonstrate. Max was tremendously sentimental, and loved the people he surrounded himself with. Despite his command of language and vocabulary, Max developed his own terminology, and took great pleasure in reciting the "Navy Version" of classic songs, much to the chagrin of his doting wife. Max could be found most nights enjoying classical music, a crossword puzzle or book, and the occasional emphatic tap dance to celebrate.
Max is mourned, and will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends. Max is survived by his wife Bernice; sons Max, Larry (Samantha), Madison (Alwina); and six beloved grandchildren Gavin Gordon, Ty Andrew, Aliyah Jane, Mason David, Ivy May and Hazel Josephine; family friend Bradley Barsi, as well as numerous extended family and friends.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to St. Mary's Hospital Palliative care, or a charity of your choosing.
A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2019 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson officiating.
If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in lieu of flowers in Max's memory may be made to St. Mary's Palliative Care Unit, or to the charity of one's choice.

Obituary text: It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of George David Alexander Macfarlane (Camrose, Alberta), who passed away on April 2, 2019, at the age of 88, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Edwin Rothenberger and Elizabeth Rothenberger; his brother Edward Rothenberger. He is survived by: his wife Bernice; his sons, Max Jr. of Calgary, Larry (Samantha) of Edmonton and Madison (Alwina) of Leduc; his grandchildren, Gavin Gordon, Ty Andrew, Aliyah Jane, Mason David, Ivy May and Hazel Josephine; his friend Brad Barsi. His father might be a George, his first name was George but he hated the name, he went by Max. He didnt even want George on his tombstone so it reads, G. Max David Macfarlane(there wasn't any room for Alexander). He says he came to Canada alone in 1967 and he thinks his brother may have moved to Quebec Canada.
I agree he was part of something secretive, he was a member of the Canadian legion and has medals from his service, but when they asked him to get his records for their files he couldn't produce or find any. He says he was a prisoner of war in North Korea as well so maybe he was some sort of special forces. He has a picture of himself next to his motorcycle in a bomber jacket and he is a skeleton, apparently it was taken when he was liberated and back in England

Thank you for reaching out. I knew nothing of my fathers family or lineage, that is why I am desperately seeking my family as he passed away a year ago yesterday. His name was Alexander George David MacFarlane, born 1931, emigrated to Canada in 1967. He did not talk about his family much but claimed to have a brother 10 years his senior. I'm sorry I cannot be more assistance!

Please let me know if you think he may fit somewhere, perhaps your family has stories of a lost uncle or brother.

Kind regards,
Madison

The story he told us was that he was of German descent, my brothers and I know that is not true but our step mother took his back story as gospel so when she did the write up for the obit she put the names of his parents as he had told us. We don't know what happened in his past, but for some reason he lied to us about where he came from. He says, and a birth certificate with no parents named, claims that he was born in Bulawayo Rhodesia. He was a very educated man, he spoke exceptional English, French, Afrikaans, Latin, a native African tongue(Ndbele I believe...) and some Italian. He says he went to boarding school in England and Naval Academy starting around age 14. He claims to have been an officer in the Royal Navy during the Korean war (A pilot to be exact). He was a bush pilot here in Canada as well as an accountant.

My siblings both live here in Alberta, our step mother is still alive and we are close. Dad and Bernice only married in 1996. Before Bernice Schlautt, he was married to Lorrie Eivinsen (my mother, who is still alive) and before here he was Married to Margaret Dietrich(unknown status) with whom he had 3 daughters that for, again, unknown reasons he abandoned. hey also live in Canada and my eldest brother has contact with 1 or 2 of them as he remembers them from his childhood.

There is so much mystery and speculation around his past that I really don't know anything, I was hoping that he would just link in to a family that is missing a son.

I have been in contact with a lady on Clan Macfarlane Worldwide named Mel Any(South African Macfarlanes), she believes he could be the son of Thomas Macfarlane who had 3 daughters, moved to Salisbury, had a son and left shortly after, leaving the son for adoption. She is trying to do more digging in her tree to find more information but unfortunately most of the people that may have know information are gone.

2 - Alexander McF and Jean Johnstone had a daughter born 19-11-1813 she married Robert Urie 24-1-1847 in Paisley and they had a Robert born 1850 Paisley. The 2nd child of Robert & Mary is Jane born 1853 in Gourock Renfrewshire and she appears as their daughter in the 1871 census aged 8 years. I haven't been able to find the OPR of her birth. I think she must have died early as she does not appear on any other census. Then comes Alexander born 17-8-1856 Helensburgh.

In the 1841 census a Robert Urrie (sic) is living with his wife Margret? Urrie and their children Janet, William and Margaret. Only in the 1841 census is Urie spelt with two 'RR's'.
In the 1851 census Robert Urie is living with Mary Urie and with them are William Urie aged 12 and Margaret Urie aged 10 and little Robert Urie aged 10 months and then in the 1861 census William and his sister Margaret Urie have left the home. I believe that Robert Urie snr had been married twice, 1. Margaret ? 2 to Mary MacFarlane of Cardross.

Robert Urie snr died 17-12-1866 at Helensburgh and listed on his DC his occupation China Merchant and his wife Mary died 7-9-1886 at Helensburgh and she is listed as a China Merchant. I haven't been able to locate the Helensburgh MI's to see if they were buried in that cemetery.
