Mary Helen Haines notes:

Earliest ancestor of FTDNA Kit #156219 and Kit #301305, Lineage Vikings 1

Many Ancestry.com public trees show this James as son of James McFarland and his wife Janet Buchanan. DNA testing of descendants of both couples show that this is not the case, so we are still looking for this James parents.

Iredell County was formed in 1788 from Rowan County, therefore the earliest records are Rowan County records.

Rowan County, NC records:

James is present in the Rowan County tax list from 1768 through 1787. He is shown with 440 acres in 1778 and 400 acres in 1783.

1768: in Walter Lindsay's district. in 1778 listed as James McFarling with 440 acres in Capt. Purviance's Dist.

In 1787 in Capt. Morrison's dist. The list includes on white male 21-60, one 16-21, 4 white males under 16, or 60+, and 4 white females.

There is a John McFarland who appears in the 1772 tax list of Walter Lindsay, but that could just be a mistake on the transcriber. However in 1778 there is a John McFarland with 149 acres in Capt. Jacob Nichol's district. Do not know who this is.

However, there is a John McFarland who purchased 100 acres on the waters of the South Yadkin, joining John Archibald and Wm. McCrary and David Logan, Rowan Co. deeds p. 456 from Absracts of state Grants, Vol. 1, by Margaret Hoffman.

Property in Rowan: He purchases 400 acres on Aug. 9, 1787, State Grant #1492, at a cost of 50 shillings per 100 acres. described as on Back Creek, (which flows from Hwy. 70, crosses Arey Rd, and meets 3rd Creek). Waters of South Yadkin. Source: Abstracts of Rowan County N.C. Deed Books 11-14, 1786-1797, by James Kluttz. p. 9

There are other references to his land in other people's deeds. Such as the deed of William Waugh in 1778 on both sides of Third Creek, bordering James McFarlin. William Waugh is probably the father of Elizabeth Waugh who married Samuel McFarlin.

A map that shows James' land on Back Creek is available on-line at http://dc.lib.unc.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ncmaps/id/118 It was made in 1777.

William (son of "John') McFarland, "...reared a large family. Eleven c hildren arrived at years of maturity. But one son is living, Anderson , at Coitsville. Four of his daughters are living, viz: Mrs Lydia Maha n, Liberty, Trumbull county; Miss J emima McFarlin, Niles; Mrs Matild a Price, Coitsville, and Mrs Lavina Harris, Youngstown..." (*1 p 168) . In the sketch for Elizabeth Loveland (*1 p 165), Williams wrote, ".. .Elizabeth became the mother of six sons and six daughters." All abo v e written in 1881-1882.
This son, born about 1815, is inferred from the 1820 census, and appar ently died young, before the 1830 census. More research needed here.

872 (Research):1 - 1841 census, Westminster, London, has Robert McFARLANE with (presumably) children :
Annie 14 married Henry HYSON, 1853, Lambeth
Margaret 10 married James ROBINS, 1848, St Pancras
Bessie 7 married James Diamond BUTTS, 1854, Chelsea
George 3 unmarried 1861, Stockwell
Another child, William, was born c1845, & married Ellen MAPLES, 1865, Wandsworth.
Robert McFARLANE was married to Charlotte Prior, of Wolvercote, Oxf., and he was a stone mason, aged 55 in 1841.
He was born in Scotland - "S" in census, but all children were born same county (Mdx).
Not much to go on, but does anything ring a bell, in particular a Robert McFarlane, born 1782 - 1786, in Scotland!

IGI search for Robert s/o George b. +/- 5 yrs of 1784 in Scotland only brings up this Robert and a Robert McFarlan b.25 Oct 1780 Glasgow, Lanarkshire s/o George McFarlan and Cathrin Cameron. Have connected family to this Robert pending more inform ation.

2 - Marriage, 1825, at Deptford, London: Robert McFarlane, widower, married Charlotte PRIOR, spinster, 4 April 1825, St Paul's, Deptford
(I have not traced an earlier marriage for the widowed Robert McF.)
Birth Cert., 1839, Westminster: George David Duncan McFarlane, son of Robert McF., Stone Mason, & Charlotte McF. (formerly PRIOR), born 25 Feb. 1839
Census 1841, Westminster, London: Robert McFarlane aged 55 (i.e. 55-59), stone mason, born "S" (Scotland) 4 children: Annie, Margaret, Betsy & George
(I have nothing to indicate where in Scotland Robert McF. came from - he died before 1851 census.)
Death at Westminster, 1848: Robert McFarlane died Westminster March Quarter 1848, stated age 62 (This age does support the 1787 baptism«i».)«/i»
Later census returns indicate another son, born c.1846: William McFarlane. I believe this William McF. married Ellen MAPLES of Hull, Yorks. at Wandsworth in 1865.
1871 & 1881 census returns show the couple together in Lambeth, but with no other family.
As for the son, George McF., born 1839, after the 1861 census I have no more information - no clear evidence in any census or Free BDM records.
children of Robert McFarlane & Charlotte were:
Ann (married Henry HYSON)
Margaret (married James ROBINS) - my ancestors
Elizabeth (married 1. James DIMENT, & 2. Charles BIRD)
George (with sister Margaret ROBINS & family, 1861 - nothing more known)
William (married Ellen MAPLES) no children known

873 (Research):1 - Capt. Francis MacFarlane, who was born in 1727 in Scotland, and died on 23 March 1817 in Dublin, Ireland (buried Clonsilla Churchyard, County Dublin, Ireland). He was at the battle of Prestonpans (1745, Scotland) at which "Bonnie" Prince Charl es Stuarts uprising scattered the only government army in Scotland. Capt. Francis subsequently held various civil, military, and diplomatic posts; eventually acquiring property in Ireland where he settled and served as a Barrackmaster. Capt. Franc is married, first (1766, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland), Miss Jane Hastie (of that city) and had a daughter and three sons:
[from 'The barons of Arrochar and their cadets' a manuscript by Chevalier Terrance Gach MacFarlane]

2 - FRANCIS MACFARLANE, b. 1727, who was at Prestonpans 1746, where he was beside Col. Gardiner when that gallant officer was killed. Purchasing some property in Ireland, he settled at Stirling, co. Meath. To this Francis, his "cousin" Walter MacF arlane of
that ilk, the learned genealogist, transmitted a copy of the family pedigree.
He m. 1st, 1766, Jane Hastie, of Edinboro, by whom he had (with a dau. Jane, who m. Mr. Bevan, of Wales, and d.s.p.) three sons,
1. HENRY LAWES, his heir.
2. James Hepburn, of Stutton House, Suffolk, Post Capt. R.N.,
3. Francis, of Longford and Pacefield, co. Dublin.
Mr. MacFarlane m. 2ndly, 1793, Mary Richardson, and by her had a son and a dau.,
4. Edward North, of Mount Pleasant, co. Dublin,
1. Mary
(Burkes Landed Gentry of Ireland pub.1912)

3 - The Macfarlanes of Hunstown House, Ireland claims descent from Andrew of Ardess. Miss Jean Macfarlane Scott gives 1672 as the year that this branch 'came off the old Arrochar line'
The chief evidence is a statement in the writing of Francis, the third representative, found on the flyleaf of a family bible and copied by Henry James, the fifth representative, in 1849, the salient portion of which reads:
"Macfarlane of that Ilk and Arrochar which had two sons, John, his brother (17th Chief -Ed) and Andrew of Ardess, who was my fathers grandfather. That is in the genealogy of our family which I received in the year 1763 from the late Walter MacFarl ane of that Ilk and Arrochar, the 22nd in direct line of male heir of the Earl of Lennox (20th from Gilchrist - Ed), wrote with«i» «/i»his own hand«i»-«/i» a man of great learning, a most ingenious antiquary, and by far thought the best genealo gist in his time."
Francis supported the Hanoverian cause and was present at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1746. He was beside Colonel Gardiner when that officer fell. Purchasing some property in Ireland he settled at Stirling, Co. Meath. In 1766, Francis marr ied Jane Hastie of Edinburgh, by whom he had three sons and a daughter, Henry, James, Francis and Jane. Secondly he married Mary Richardson, by whom he had a son and a daughter, Edward North and Mary. His oldest sea, Henry, succeeded him.

2 - I'm researching my husband's family tree & he is the g3 grandson of Robert McFarlane & Charlotte Prior (m Deptford 1825). He is descended from Robert's daughter, Elizabeth & James Diamond Butts.
Charlotte Prior almost certainly had a sister, Mary.
Robert Lemon & Mary Prior were witnesses at Robert McF & Charlotte Prior's wedding in 1825. Robert Lemon was also a stonemason & a widower.
Margaret & Elizabeth McFarlane, daus of Robert & Charlotte, were christened at St Clement's, Islington, on the same date - 14 July 1833. Also christened the same date & place was James Lemon, son of Robert Lemon & Mary lemon (Prior ). The McFarlane's lived at 48 Collyer St, Islington & the Lemons lived next door at 49 Collyer St.
I cannot find the McFarlane family in 1851 (apart from Elizabeth), but Charlotte re-appears in 1861 as Charlotte Bonnell & again in 1871 as mother-in-law to Elizabeth McFarlane's second husband, Charles Bird.

[ Larry McFarlane Bryant ]

2 - guessing that George's Father might have been a William based on naming traditions??? My William left in 1816 for Canada... passenger list noted he was from Callander!
[ e-mail from Larry Bryant rec: 7 Feb 2006 ]

3 - William MacFarlane immigrated Nov 1816 from Scotland, possibly on the ship Favourite that left Port of Glasgow Oct 22, 1816 (various transcriptions show this ship departing 1815 but that is incorrect.)
He married Maria Kinney (kinnie?) probably in York or Sunbury County, NB and had maybe 9 children from 1828 to 1844... George Walter, Amos?, John?, Alan, Mary Jane, Francis/frannie, Sallie/Sarah, Warren, Anne? Most were born and lived around Waasi s and Burton. William and Maria were buried in Lower Lincoln Cemertary, Sunbury County, NB 1862 and 1884.

Reply from Larry:
There was a transcription error though and this ship actually sailed Oct 22, 1816, matching more closely with Wm's census record showing arrival Nov 1816. Passenger list showed William as 25
but born in 1783 he was probably 32-33... however the Captain was paid to bring YOUNG settlers to NB! Family "history" says he was born 1784 or 1786...

In Frederickton, NB where William settled, I was able to review this ship record and passenger list, and gained hords of imfo on his wife's Tracy family... fun driving the hiways there with signs to "watch out for moose crossing the road!"
different than the sheep to watch for in Scotland!
Also IGI extraction shows a William McFarlane b.24 May 1784 Glasgow, Lanarkshire to a William McFarlane and Isobel Stewart.

She was born in 1920 though and may well be dead. I had an old NJ address an d phone number and I'll check that. 2 - I'm now conceding that my George Macfarlane was from New Kilpatrick and married Janet McKinlay of Callander and they then lived and died in Callander. I've not found her with the Annie McKinlay's and the Janet born there in 1751/2 is not her.. . I'm finding her as Janet in the OPR marriage proclamations but then as Jane on the MI.

3 - OPR's show George registered in his parish of New Kilpatrick and Janet in her parish of Callander. I thought this was reversed but George must have come up to Callander to work in the lime quarry, bought a house, and married Janet McKinlay the re in 1781.

4 - My old George was originally from New Kilpatrick. He was a quarryman near Callander as a young man and must have meet Jane/Janet there. I've not been able to connect her to the McKinlays, but there were a bunch there near Anie...

Please note the marriage records I sent you earlier... OPR's show George registered in his parish of New Kilpatrick and Janet in her parish of Callander. I thought this was reversed but George must have come up to Callander to work in t he lime quarry, bought a house, and married Janet McKinlay there in 1781... so now i'm looking at MacF's in New Kilpatrick early 18th century... any help there?
George still seems a likely match to your early 1700's MacF there in Callander...

I'm also trying to connect my Callander MacF to Drymen MacF. Noticed you have some Drymen but I can't quite connect.
My probable ancester George 1742-1828 wife Janet McKinlay might be the son of Walter MacF b abt 1705 and wife Jean Mcaulay b abt 1710 who married in Drymen 1728 and had 9 children born at Blarnavaid farm, Drymen, including a George born 1741 and c ommon sibling names William and John. Most of the children per OPR were married in Drymen except George. My George's marriage was recorded in nearby New Kilpatrick & Callander in 1781.
Walter MacF born abt 1705 and Jean Mcaulay born abt 1710. they were married 6 Apr 1728 and lived at Blarnavaid farm, Drymen near the Buchanan Castle and had 9 children... Dougal 1729, Grizall 1731, Janet 1734,, William 1735, John 1738, George 1741 , Walter 1743, Duncan 1744, and Andrew 1748.

I meant to tell you - we drove back from Edinburgh to Oban through Callander on Friday, past the quarries where the McF forebears probably worked!
Joan, when you went to the quarry where was it? Above you can see he worked at the Milntown of Achleshie. It is due east of Callander, other quarries were west of Callander above Dalvey... when we were there in 2009 we drove around there and spok e to a resident there. most of that quarry had been covered over and was grass now. nearby was a rv/camping park. I know that NK had quarries too, maybe he worked there for some years and then went to Milntown, before marrying he got the place i n Callander.

My error - can't read my own writing. Walter McF should be 13.7.1774
I also have Walter McF 21.10.1890 27 - which puzzled me. I thought these dates needed re-checking, so didn't include them
The Callander MI's are in a printed (typewritten) book at New Register House Mitchell Library in Glasgow has the book also and i bought one.
these were done by John and Sheila Mitchell for the Scottish Genealogy Society in 1974. slightly different date for Walter 1874 vs your 1844??? they only had Wm MacF in 237, The questionable George and Jane(t) in 239, walter 241, and Duncan 242...
Do you realise that you can access these records online via the scotlandspeople website? You have to buy credits to view, but pricing is reasonable. I wanted to have a real go at the family history, so used the opportunity of a visit to Edinburgh , but both of us could have found the same material, apart, maybe, for MI's, from our home pc's. years ago when this was "Scotsorigin" or something I did search there, but then found most was also online for free.
About 10 years ago before a trip to Scotland, I had searched for possible Wm's born near Callander and there was only one, Wm b 1783 to George and Janet. the Ship Favorite from Scotland to NB in Nov 1816 had Wm age 25 from Callander. again the Cap tain was paid to bring back young settlers so ages might have been low? The NB census for 1851 showed Wm arriving in Nov 1816 and he is definitely my line. The George and Janet a good choice for parents or now maybe your George and Elizabeth Wood ? Did you get any other children for them?
I looked again for Willam McFand couldn't find any others. The DNA evidence is very interesting. 'Fraid we can't help here as Robert McF was my husband's ggg grandfather «b»what is the line from robert down to your husband«/b»?, but descended thro ugh his maternal grandmother. Are there any male Macf descendents from his grandmothers brothers or male couisn? It would be great to find one and be able do DNA to compare to our William line! DNA only works via the direct male line
I have had DNA done for this MacF line and we appear to be related to cadets from Gartartan?
Do you mean Gartocharn - (pretty) village on Loch Lomond? NO...The MacF cadets built a castle at Gartmore with 2 turrets and walls (picture above) like the Inveruglas castle on Isle in Loch Lomand. More of it is standing than at Inveruglas. Nearb y is the Gartmore House that is used as hotel. Gartmore is just south of Aberfoyle.
The confusing thing is the Married record for Geo and Janet with him recorded as from NK??? that's why I looked at the Drymen Walter MacF with son George born 1741, and several in our line using Walter for middle name???
George could have been working temporarily in NK parish . NK (Bearsden) to Callander is only about 30 miles...
yes, all of this is close... the ancestral home in Gartmore, Callander, New Kilpatrick, even Drymen if that figures in...
Joan, looking back at some of my old notes, John MacK and Janet Blair had 11 kids from 1750-1770 incuding Janet in 1752, but she married Peter Mcgregor 22 Jan 1776 and they had at least 3 sons Peter 1787, James 1791 and Alexander 1789 in KIlmadoc k per family search... don't believe this is our Janet.
Saw the MI for this, but didn't copy it
BTW amazing fact, but there appear to be no extant burial records for Callandar - very strange and need to check, but there are none listed under the index for Old Parish Records, so the MI's may be all there is.
familysearch.com did show Robert MacF and Elspeth Wright had a son George 7 or 10 Oct 1698. and that George Macf and Eliz Wood had a son Duncan 01 Jand 1751 in Callander but no record of George 1742???
oops, found in my notes their other children... Catherine 1730,Robert 1731, Duncan 1734, Anne 1736, Isabell 1739, George 1742, alexander 1744, John 1747, and Duncan1751, but you found these too.
I double checked George 1742, but can't find on Familysearch. Definately in OPR
Also, on Familysearch.org. George McF, bapt May 1741, son of Walter McF and Jean McCauley - I wonder what other family Walter & Jean had. Walter and Jean had Dougal 17829, Grizall 1731, Janet 1734, William 1735, John 1738, George 1741, Walte r 1743, Duncan 1744, and Andrew 1748... Could this be 'your' antecedant Walter???
Biggest question is the historical naming pattern, first son after father's father, first daughter after wive's mother, second son after wive's father and 2nd daughter after father's mother... none of these seem to follow that...
Our George and Janet should have parents William and Elizabeth MacF and Robert and Christine MacKinlay.
George and Elizabeth Wood don't even have a son William... i had found Geo and Eliz Wood with Geo 1742 and all children in Callander but for some reason didn't like the fit??? Again back to our George is supposed to be from NK... we need another c lue.
