1 - My husband's g-g-grandfather Alexander McFarlane had a sister Janet born about 1808 in Scotland (we think in Kilbarchan, Renfrew). Their father was Alexander McFarlane married to Anne McCulloch. They emigrated from Scotland in 1815 to Ontario, Canada. Unfortunately, we haven't discovered who or when Janet married or for that matter, If she married. She seems to have disappeared from the records that we have been able to find. The family lived in Lanark County, Ontario; then some moved to Grey Co. There were several other sisters also - Mary, Ann, Catherine, Elizabeth and Maisey (or Minnie).

Many people have this as the same Alexander [CC120696] s/o Alexander & Elizabeth Lennox. However that Alexander m. 27 Sept. 1808 Lochgoilhead Mary McGown.

2 - My great, great Grand was Alexander and he married (Anne Mc Culloch) His father was Alexander too and married (Elizabeth Lennox) That Alexander's father was Patrick and married (Anne Mitchell) They all lived I believe in Scotland and I think around the Tarbet area. I have a cousin who has more information and I will try to find out more.
My Grandfather Neil was 2 years old when they came from Scotland and when he married they moved to North Dakota and then to Minnesota where I was born and have lived all my life.

I also have a copy from the General Register Office of the marriage of Alexander McFarlane and Elizabeth Lennox 20th June 1783.

1 - My John McFarlane married Agnes Davidson (daughter of Peter Davidson, mother unknown) and my direct ancestor was their daughter Eleanor Helen McFarlane born May 8, 1826 in Scotland. The dates seem to coinside. I do not have any information on any siblings for her. She is my great great grandmother.

2 - DOB looks doubtful as she has a brother born only a couple of months later. She is probably the Helen shown in IGI search as daughter of another John McFarlane and Agnes Davidson who was bapt. 7 May 1828 Muirkirk, Ayr, Scotland.
2. HELEN MACFARLANE - Gender: Female
Christening: 09 DEC 1822 Muirkirk, Ayr, Scotland

3. HELEN MACFARLANE - Gender: Female
Christening: 07 MAY 1828 Muirkirk, Ayr, Scotland
Father: JOHN MACFARLANE
Mother: AGNES DAVIDSON

3 - Hellen McFarlane is somewhat problematic. She appears in the 1851 census in Scotland with husband William Henry and is 23 (so born abt. 1828), with birth in Muirkirk. But on her tombstone it says birth in 1826.

So, tried to find her in 1841 and found a Hellen Mcfarlane, age 11, born Ayrshire, living in Muirkirk with the family of John Hair, age 80. So, it would appear she is an orphan.

Rossann has a tree on Ancestry and she puts that Hellen is the daughter of John and Agness Davidson MacFarlane, which there is a birth record for a Helen on April 23, 1828, but she never appears in the census record with those two.

Children
Marion

Then Hellens parents being John and Agnes definitely would fit.

Hello Andrew,

I have been looking into Catherine McFarlane I43127, whose gravestone is next to that of my forebears (Duncan McFarlane I43124) in the Tarbert cemetery, South Knapdale.

Having consulted with another researcher who has Catherine in her tree (Anne Martin), and checked the evidence of Census and a her death certificate, I have confirmed that Catherine is NOT the daughter of Duncan McFarlane I43124 and Christina Johnstone. In fact her parents were: Dugald McFarlane and Mary Carmichael. Her MI is in Tarbert cemetery South Knapdale.

Catherine married Duncan LEITCH on 3 Mar 1821, and Census records indicate they had eight children: Mary (born 1823), Dugald (born 1825), twins John and Nancy (born 1830), Archibald (born 1836), Margaret (born 1837), Catherine (born 1839), and Duncan (born 1841). In the 1841 Census they were living in Escart, Kilcalmonell Parish. She died 7 Feb 1895.

Can you please Unlink Catherine from Duncan and Christina, thankyou.

Cheers
Di Elliffe

1 - No IGI search result for Robert s/o Thomas b.+/-2yrs of 1802, as at 21 Jul 2011.

2 - Robert McFarlane (wife Elizabeth Beard) is my 3rd great grandfather. Robert and Elizabeth were married in 1826 in Ireland. I have the name of his father, Thomas McFarlane, and his mother Esther (nee Graham) and I am assuming they lived in Done gal as that is here their son Thomas was born in 1832. They all must emigrated to Australia sometime between 1826 and 1845 when Elizabeth died here in Australia.
It would be interesting to find who went off to US from Ireland and when.

1 - Not present with family at 1861 census where his wife is shown as head of household so William must have died or left before 7 Apr 1861.

2 - William Mcfarlane was born Feb. 9, 1823, bapt. Feb. 13, 1823 in Cortachy and Clova, Angus, Scotland to father William [SB James-Ed.] Mcfarlane and mother Mary Malcom. a James Mcfarlane is in the household [brother to William-Ed.].

In 1841 William Mcfarlan, age 15, born Cortachy and Clova, in Angus is working as an Agricultural Laborer with the Alexander Ogilvy family.

In 1851 Wm Mcfarlane, age 28, born Cortachy, Forfar is a shepherd living in civil parish Rescobie, Co. Angus, living with the Charles Cable family.

On October 12, 1851, in Forfar, Angus, Scotland Jane Fraser married William MacFarlane.

In 1861 William Mcfarlen, 36, shepherd, born Cortachy, Forfarshire is living with James Clark 29 and David Lindsay 15 all as boarders, living in Cortachy & Clova, Angus.

In 1861 Jane F. Macfarlane, 34, born Logierait, Perthshire is working as a yarn winder, living with James 8, William 4, Mary 13, all born Forfar.

So, it seems that they are not living together in 1861 for some unknown, maybe economic reasons, or they divorced.

In 1871 census William Mcfarlane 14 and James Mcfarlane 18, both born in Forfar are not living with mother or father, but as boarders. Haven't found Jean Fraser McFarlane yet, nor father William.

1 - Peter inherited the family building business which his sons continued and according to his son Will, Peter purchased Loch Sloy Cottage from his uncle Jake and is seen standing in front of the cottage in the picture that accompanies this entry.
Towards the end of his life he was often to be found kilted and posing, with Ben Ledi in the background, for the benefit of amateur photographers.
The following obituary was contributed to the local paper (The Callander Advertiser) and pulished on May 24th 1963. It was probably written by his brother Archie, local Callander and Macfarlane historian.
'In loving memory of Peter Macfarlane, died 20th May 1963 aged 63 years.
This epitah, simplicity in itself, will no doubt be read by future generations of the Macfarlane Clan, not only by those in Callander, but by clansmen and women over a very much wider area.
But perhaps they will never know that behind these words lies a remarkable story of one of Callanders most colourful characters, a man whose dynamic personality could have elevated him to a much higher rank in life had he chosen it that way. But strangely enough he was content to play the role of the rustic, the unconventional, bordering almost on eccentricity.
Peter Macfarlane was no ordinary man. No high honours in education ever came his way, and his closet association with that noble seat of learning, the McLaren High School, was by virtue of the fact that he spent a lifetime only a stone throw from its portals.
But in another sphere he gained not only an honour of the highest degree and was acclaimed a local hero, though for many years he was an almost forgotten hero.
Amoungst his many treasured possessions was a silver watch presented to him for saving a boys life in the River Teith on 9th July 1919, and with it went the parchment scroll presented by the Royal Humane Society.
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lays down his life for a friend". This may well have been the epitah to Peter Macfarlane on that summer day forty-four years ago; but he was spared to save the lives of nine others.
Not long ago a man whose life Peter saved when he was a youth had the good fortune to win £70,000 in the football pools. One might ask did he reward the hero in any way? Oddly enough the answer is no. It seems (whole section indesipherable) tions. Nature in all her moods held for him a strong fascination, and he was never happier than when roaming the hills and rivers.
His poaching days, he confided to his friends, were the happiest days of his life. The art of poaching had probably been inhertited from his ancestors, the "Wild Macfarlanes," who were conspicuous too in the days of clan warfare.
In the archaeological field he could well have become something of an expert; for he was instrumental in helping to establish , beyound doubt that the Romans were encamped at Bochastle. His 'finds' of pottery, bronze, and coins were often a topic for conversation when he and his cronies would meet. Peter loved to live in the past.
He had known too the horrors of war, for like the fearless youth he was, he ran from home to become a soldier, giving a false age. He was on the front line before his eighteenth birthday.
Peter was an ardent lover of the works of the poet Robert W. Service, and his renderingsof 'Dangerous Dan McGrew' made one feel he could well be sitting in the famous 'Malamute Saloon.'
Despite his ruggedness on the surface, Peter was kind and generous man and many of the wandering bodies of the highways were the better for having known him.
He knew full well the taste of the 'water of life', and he knew too that 'John Barleycorn' was a fickle friend.
His family records he could trace back to the late 1770's, and his slaters and plasterer's business founded by his great-grandfather.
Tragedy entered the happy life of Peter Macfarlane in January of this year, when his wife passed on, and he never overcame his grief in the loss of his life companion.
It is sad indeed that the time has come when his upright kilted figure will no longer be seen in Bridgend, and his daring deeds and exploits (and they were many) will now remain only memories.

2 - Used to compete at the Callander Highland Games at the tossing the Caber event. He wore a kilt constantly and his only pair of trousers was used for work.

3 - After sending you my last e-mail, my older sister (53) called and I asked her if she remembered Peter McFarlane in his kilt and she said he was a very good friend of our grandfather and she used to have to spend a lot of time round at their house on her best behaviour taking tea in the parlour! She also went for walks with him and our grandfather - both with their walking sticks! She said some of his children went to school with her and my other siblings (there are ten of us - I am the youngest) and suggested I speak to my brother Norman who lives in Callander still - he is 65 and will remember more. He and a couple of my other brothers had to live at Teithside in Bridgend with my grandparents for years as our 3 bed house wasnt big enough to accommodate us all!

2 - Janet lived in Huntly, New Zealand until her oldest sister Mary married, when she and the other young girls moved in with their sister Mary Gould nee McFarlane and brother in law Harry Gould. Mary and Harry were my grandparents.
Janet (Auntie Jen) was my mother's aunt and as a child I spent many holidays with her in her little "shack" in Laingholm, Auckland.
Janet did not marry. She was a career dental nurse who worked for many years at an Auckland school dental clinic. She once wrote and illustrated a little book of poems for children entitled Jabs at Giant Decay under the pen name of Javelin.
Janet McFarlane was one of the first intake of dental nurses to train in NZ in 1921. I think she spent most of her working life at either New Lynn or Grey Lynn School Dental Clinic in Auckland. After her retirement in 1950 she spent her time writi ng letters and poems, playing the piano and painting beautiful pictures. She once had some paintings hung in an exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery.
She was rather different!! She had her chooks, all named, walking in and out of her little house out at Laingholm. She also had numerous cats -- but then so did my grandmother Mary!!
Janet and her older sister Christabel bought an acre of land at Laingholm. Janet had a little two roomed house built on one quarter, she sold another quarter to Basil Bain, a nephew-in-law, and Christabel built a house on the top section when sh e came back to New Zealand in 1957. Unfortunately she didn't get things moving for quite a while and had bought a house in Titirangi to live in until it was finished and she died before it was.
Christabel had a Keith Hay house put onto the fourth quarter for Janet to live in as her own, by that time, was in a rather disgusting state. It was a nice little house, all furnished with a fridge and a proper toilet and bathroom -- things that h er little "shack" didn't have but was she happy? Oh no!! She loved her little shack and simply stayed put in it, but she did use the fridge to keep the cat's meat in!!
Our dear old auntie Jen finally had to be moved from her little shack as it was in very poor repair -- all her lovely paintings and her beloved piano were ruined. She died in Tokanui, a home for the insane, on 23-May-1969 aged 79 Years. She is bur ied in the Hamilton Park Cemetery.
I have often wondered whether her insanity could have been caused by the indiscriminate use of mercury in those days.

So I went looking in NY for 1860, and found Roxa McFarland with her husband «b»Franklin, not Samuel. «/b»They are in New York, he is 35 from Conn. makes furniture, with children John, age 7 born in California and Amelia age 6, born N.Y.
Then I found a voting record for a «b»John Franklin McFarland«/b» in1867 in Nevada, California and his estimated birth year coincides with the birthyear in the 1860 census.

1 - The "Reverie" length 33 feet 6 inches was built for Mr. W. Fisher and he had great success with her. She was moored off the coast at Largs opposite his home (which is now called Lady Gowrie Drive) and near what is now the Largs Sailing Club. When she was sold in 1940's there had been unwritten agreement that when she was no longer wanted and to be sold that she was to be offered back to the McFarlane Family.
A.J. (Jack) McFarlane and his life long friend Alan Cormack bought her and the sailed her with great success and won the Plympton Cup in 1946 Alan sold his share back to Jack as Alan had family commitments. In April 1947 whilst Jack was taking some friends on a week end fishing trip and was going along the Port River the Ketch "Annie Watt' ran into her and she sank to the bottom of the River. The next day Jack with his friend Mack Lawrie and the people from the Harbour's Board lifted her out of the water. She was slipped on Cruickshank's Corner (almost in front of the Birkenhead Tavern) and was repaired by Jack and his father "Tyz" McFarlane (who helped to build her in the 1898 in the family business), so the Reverie was back to her former glory. Jack continued to sail her until he died in 1951. The "Reverie" was sold on and had many owners some looked after her and some did not; a young chap bought her and whilst he was being restoring her at the North Arm she caught alight and was burnt out.
A very sad end to a pretty "Gaff Sloop" that sailed well for many years and bought much delight to many people.

1 - The Macfarlanes of Hunstown House, Ireland claims descent from Andrew of Ardess. Miss Jean Macfarlane Scott gives 1672 as the year that this branch 'came off the old Arrochar line'
The chief evidence is a statement in the writing; of Francis, the third representative, found on the flyleaf of a family bible and copied by Henry James, the fifth representative, in 1849, the salient portion of which reads:
"Macfarlane of that Ilk and Arrochar which had two sons, John, his brother (17th Chief -Ed) and Andrew of Ardess, who was my fathers grandfather. That is in the genealogy of our family which I received in the year 1763 from the late Walter MacFa rlane of that Ilk and Arrochar, the 22nd in direct line of male heir of the Earl of Lennox (20th from Gilchrist - Ed), wrote with«i» «/i»his own hand«i»-«/i» a man of great learning, a most ingenious antiquary, and by far thought the best genea logist in his time."
The records of this family are in the custody of Captain Charles James Napier Macfarlane MA TCD JP CE of Newbury House, Santry, Co Dublin, Ireland, and include a family tree passed on by his father, Henry James.
This family's Coat of Arms was sketched from a book plate, copied from the Arms on the old escutcheon, nearly two centuries ago. Henry James subsequently compared the two . The Royal«i» «/i»Crown in the crest rests upon a book, which Captain C. J . Napier MacFarlane was taught to believe represented Holy Writ.
Captain Napier MacFarlane has also in his possession several plates of date 1728,«i» «/i»with the crest of Francis engraved upon them. This crest likewise shows the Royal Crown resting, upon a book.

1 - This is suggested by some researchers as same person as Robert Lee McFarland (CC I104606)

2 - According to tradition the parents of James Macfarlane emigrated from Scotland to the north of Ireland, where they suffered, with other Protestants, in the siege of Londonderry in 1689.
After their arrival in America, and within the last forty years, one of the family, on the female side, had in her possession a curious small glass cup, which was said to have been used in dealing out the scanty rations of food to the starving pat riots, during the siege, when rats, mice and horses' blood had a market value.
[History of Clan MacFarlane by Mrs C. M. Little pub 1893]

3 - Some people [Ancestry.com trees] have John McFarland, born 1677 in Argyllshire or Perthshire married to Nancy Glendinning as the son of Robert McFarland, born abt. 1651 in Co. Tyrone. And then some people have this same Robert as the father al so of James McFarland, born 1695 who came to America in 1723 and died in 1770 in Cumberland Co. PA.
Both these lines are in the FTDNA Cadet lineage.
Some people also have Robert's father as Patrick Mc Farlan, born 1630 in Buchanan, Stirlingshire.

1 - Unfortunately to this point -I haven't found a definite link to my mother's family - I'll have to go to the Melbourne General Cemetery
and have a good look at the McFarlane graves - to get at least the birth/death dates and correct
Christian names of my Grandfather and his father etc & spouses. Unfortunately my mother and her brother
are no longer with us, and we don't seem to have any decent records held by my cousins!
Have you looked at my family tree on the My Heritage site? The link is:
<http://www.myheritage.com/site-217002911/wendy-laing-family>
The Berriman family seems to be everywhere too LOL!
Funnily enough, my brother found out that the Berriman and McFarlane family tree both had Robertson in them - who a few generations back were brothers!!! Needless to say mum was not very impressed when he happily advised her that perhaps we were ' inbred' - that's boys for you!
All I know about the McFarlane side of my maternal side is that they migrated to Australia from Cupar Fife, Scotland,
where oddly enough my husband David Laing was brought up! We were told in our younger days that our McFarlane ancestors came from Arrochar - a place I've visited a few times - and recently, Dave & I took a 'toilet' stop at the Arrochar Hotel is fr eeing, snow & cold weather,
back in March this year, when we had to go to Innellan, (next to Dunnoon) via the Rest and be thankful rout via Loch Lomond, as the car ferry was closed for 3 days due to bad weather! Dave's sister and husband live on the Clyde in Innellan, and w e have been there several times.
I've managed to get some information on the internet, including photos of the graves at Arrochar cemetery, & of course your informative details about some of the occupants. I took photos back in 1970 on my first visit to Scotland with my parent s - but the
slides have disappeared during several house moves.
I will certainly keep you informed of any progress. I know it will take time, during any spare moments I get. I should be writing the first chapter of the third book in a series for my publisher at the moment, but the geneology seems to be takin g over!

1 - Worth McFarland's parents were Malcolm Alexander McFarland (1858 - 1935) and Mary Elizabeth McLeod McFarland (1860 - 1921). Malcolm was reportedly from the Licking Creek area of Moore Co. (now Sanford area of Lee Co.) but moved to nearby Harnett Co. and settled on McLeod land Mary Liz's father gave them when they married (prob. in about 1884 or 1885). Malcom was nicknamed "Make" and was called "Grand Make" after he became a grandfather. He was a storekeeper but was partially paralyzed following an accident when he was aged 38. He did recover enough to walk with a cane later in life. The first child of Malcom and Mary Liz was Kate, Worth's oldest sister and my mother's mother. Worth had a sister, Maggie Belle, whom he was particularly close to. Maggie Belle stayed at home to look after her parents and never married. She helped raise my mother - who called her "Auntie" all her life.

Mary Ann was my great great grandmother, married to Adam Gordon Anderson.
[E-mail from Don Thomson rec: 12 Dec 2012]

2 - Adam Gordon Anderson emigrated from Scotland to southwestern Quebec in 1833 at the age of 15 with his parents and five of his siblings. He was the only one to cross over into the United States. From Huntingdon, Quebec he moved to Westville, Fr anklin County, New York, where the 1850 census lists him as "farmer". His second son, William Davie, was born at Malone, New York in December of 1850. His first wife, Mary Ann (MacFarlane) died in 1858. He married Nancy Ann (Smith) in 1860, and i s in Westville for the 1860 census. Sometime during the 1860's the family went west to Remington/Delphi, Indiana and on to Cook County, Illinois sometime before 1868 when Adam Gordon, Jr. was born there. Apparently the family returned to Remington , Indiana where their last two children were born. Flora was born and died there in infancy (1871-2) and Angus Smith was born there in 1873. They moved to the Scotch Ridge area (Carlisle), Warren County, Iowa about 1876. Nancy Ann died in 1884, an d was buried at Avon Cemetery southeast of Des Moines. In his later years Adam Gordon lived with his son, Adam Gordon, Jr. at Cumming, Iowa, where he died in 1894.

Of Adam Gordon, Arthur G. Anderson in his account of the past, wrote: "Memory of my grandfather Anderson is almost totally lacking. He lived with Uncle Gordon. A large cane chair was his, and I seem to remember that at some time he occupied it, bu t my next vague memory in this respect is that it was empty, and we were there for his funeral. He had come into Iowa from Indiana, probably from near Remington, Indiana. It was said that he had heard of Scotch Ridge in Iowa, and assumed that it w as a Scotch community. He made the trek to it and found little more than an area, but settled there. At the time he came the country was open prairie....."

4 - Canada, Ocean Arrivals (Form 30A), 1919-1924 Record; Immigration & Travel

John and his wife took several trips back to Scotland. There is a Quebec arrival record of 2 Jul 1911. There was an extended trip which included the birth of their daughter Flora in Glasgow in 1913. They arrived back from that trip in Aug. 1916. The above arrivals record of 1919-1924 means they must have taken another trip after the birth of third daughter Margaret in Apr 1919.-Ed
