  He was born on Bank Street, in the Ferryhill district of Aberdeen. He died from stomach problems three weeks later, on 14 Sep 1858. The cause of death was recorded as "Inflammatory softening of the mucous membranes of the stomach, about five days". He was buried at Spital Cemetery, Aberdeen.
