2 - Obituary of George "Max" David Alexander Macfarlane
G. "Max" David Alexander Macfarlane (February 14, 1931 - April 2, 2019)
Max was born February 14, 1931, in Bulawayo, South Rhodesia, Africa. Max passed away with his family at his side on April 2, 2019 after battling two forms of Cancer. Anybody who knew Max, knew he had a fighter's spirit, and he carried that with him until the end.
Max was a well, spoken, pragmatic, intelligent man. He had a wicked sense of humor, and a lust for life. He adored his wife, children and grandchildren. He was passionate about his family, his work and his legacy. Max lived his life in spite of adversity that might have discouraged a lesser man. Military service, marriage, fatherhood, his Accounting practice: all were executed with precision and an uncommon attention to detail. Max insisted that "tomorrow is not an option, and it is later than you think, so get on with it!". He demanded that things were done right, and relished an opportunity to demonstrate. Max was tremendously sentimental, and loved the people he surrounded himself with. Despite his command of language and vocabulary, Max developed his own terminology, and took great pleasure in reciting the "Navy Version" of classic songs, much to the chagrin of his doting wife. Max could be found most nights enjoying classical music, a crossword puzzle or book, and the occasional emphatic tap dance to celebrate.
Max is mourned, and will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends. Max is survived by his wife Bernice; sons Max, Larry (Samantha), Madison (Alwina); and six beloved grandchildren Gavin Gordon, Ty Andrew, Aliyah Jane, Mason David, Ivy May and Hazel Josephine; family friend Bradley Barsi, as well as numerous extended family and friends.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to St. Mary's Hospital Palliative care, or a charity of your choosing.
A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2019 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson officiating.
If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in lieu of flowers in Max's memory may be made to St. Mary's Palliative Care Unit, or to the charity of one's choice.

His father might be a George, his first name was George but he hated the name, he went by Max. He didnt even want George on his tombstone so it reads, G. Max David Macfarlane(there wasn't any room for Alexander). He says he came to Canada alone in 1967 and he thinks his brother may have moved to Quebec Canada.
I agree he was part of something secretive, he was a member of the Canadian legion and has medals from his service, but when they asked him to get his records for their files he couldn't produce or find any. He says he was a prisoner of war in North Korea as well so maybe he was some sort of special forces. He has a picture of himself next to his motorcycle in a bomber jacket and he is a skeleton, apparently it was taken when he was liberated and back in England

Thank you for reaching out. I knew nothing of my fathers family or lineage, that is why I am desperately seeking my family as he passed away a year ago yesterday. His name was Alexander George David MacFarlane, born 1931, emigrated to Canada in 1967. He did not talk about his family much but claimed to have a brother 10 years his senior. I'm sorry I cannot be more assistance!
Please let me know if you think he may fit somewhere, perhaps your family has stories of a lost uncle or brother.
Kind regards,
Madison

The story he told us was that he was of German descent, my brothers and I know that is not true but our step mother took his back story as gospel so when she did the write up for the obit she put the names of his parents as he had told us. We don't know what happened in his past, but for some reason he lied to us about where he came from. He says, and a birth certificate with no parents named, claims that he was born in Bulawayo Rhodesia. He was a very educated man, he spoke exceptional English, French, Afrikaans, Latin, a native African tongue(Ndbele I believe...) and some Italian. He says he went to boarding school in England and Naval Academy starting around age 14. He claims to have been an officer in the Royal Navy during the Korean war (A pilot to be exact). He was a bush pilot here in Canada as well as an accountant.
My siblings both live here in Alberta, our step mother is still alive and we are close. Dad and Bernice only married in 1996. Before Bernice Schlautt, he was married to Lorrie Eivinsen (my mother, who is still alive) and before here he was Married to Margaret Dietrich(unknown status) with whom he had 3 daughters that for, again, unknown reasons he abandoned. hey also live in Canada and my eldest brother has contact with 1 or 2 of them as he remembers them from his childhood.
There is so much mystery and speculation around his past that I really don't know anything, I was hoping that he would just link in to a family that is missing a son.
I have been in contact with a lady on Clan Macfarlane Worldwide named Mel Any(South African Macfarlanes), she believes he could be the son of Thomas Macfarlane who had 3 daughters, moved to Salisbury, had a son and left shortly after, leaving the son for adoption. She is trying to do more digging in her tree to find more information but unfortunately most of the people that may have know information are gone.
