• Notes

  John Wesley McFarling was in the Civil War. He was shot in the left hand and lost all of his forefinger and half of his middle finger. Uncle Ivan said that Grandpa McFarling used to sing, "Old Black Joe", his favorite song. He also played the guitar while Uncle Jim McFarling played the fiddle. Uncle Ivan remembered that Grandpa was a good-natured man. I asked Uncle Ivan why the variation in the spelling of McFarland/McFarling. All he told me was that there was a "rift" in the family!
