- LYDIA (MCFARLAND) MAHAN (ca 1814 to after 1882)
(Research by Peter Folsom McFarlin - May 2012, updated June 2019)
William (son of John) McFarland, "...reared a large family. Eleven chi ldren arrived at years of maturity. But one son is living, Anderson, a t Coitsville. Four of his daughters are living, viz: Mrs Lydia Mahan , Liberty, Trumbull county; Miss Jem ima McFarlin, Niles; Mrs Matilda P rice, Coitsville, and Mrs Lavina Harris, Youngstown..." (*1 p 168). I n the sketch for Elizabeth Loveland (*1 p 165), Williams wrote, "...El izabeth became the mother of six sons and six daughters." All abov e w ritten in 1881-1882.
Lydia McFarland appears to be the first daughter of William and Elizab eth McFarland, and was born about 1814, in Ohio, according to later ce nsus records. She grew up at the McFarland farm on the Hazelton road i n Coitsville, Ohio. In 1820, she i s one of the three females under te n shown in the census, along with her younger sister, Jemima, and anot her sister, name unknown. By 1830, she is still the oldest girl at hom e, along with four younger sisters.
7 Oct 1835 Lydia married Edward Mahan of adjacent Liberty, Ohio. As Wi lliams states in 1882 about Edward Mahan; "...he was married in 183 5 to Miss Lydia McFarland, daughter of William McFarland, of Coitsvill e, Mahoning county. They have had tw elve children, all of whom are liv ing and the joy of their parents in their old age. Mr. and Mrs. Maha n are members of the Methodist church and are good citizens..." (* 1 p 444). They were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Churc h Hil l (*1 p 435).
Combining the census listings of 1850 and 1860 seems to show that Lydi a and Edward had fourteen (!) children (see the ten children in the 18 70 list below). Perhaps two died young and were not counted in the Wil liams' sketch of 1882. A check o f vital records would likely answer th is. Their youngest daughter, Maggie Mahan, was born in Pennsylvania i n 1870 (after that year's census), apparently while Lydia was travelin g or visiting.
An interesting 'moment in time' for the entire Edward Mahan family wa s recorded in the 1870 census, taken on the second of June. They live d in the Church Hill post office area of Liberty, Ohio, and had a grea t variety of occupations reflectin g a hard working group.
Edward Mahan, age 68, farmer (and brickmaker?)
Lydia Mahan, age 56, keeping house
William A Mahan, age 34, engineer on RR
Margaret Ann Mahan, age 30, schoolteacher
Thomas (B?) Mahan, age 28, drills for minerals
John Dickinson Mahan, age 26, switch tender on RR
Edward Mahan, age 24, conductor on RR
Harriet Mahan, age 24, at home (probably the wife of Edward)
James Price Mahan, age 22, fireman on RR engine
Bennitte(sp?) Franklin Mahan, age 20, brakeman on RR
Newton Vance Mahan, age 18, works on farm
Clinton Armstrong Mahan, age 16, at home (in school)
Lydia Martha Mahan, age 10, at home (in school)
All these people lived within the same household in Liberty, Ohio in 1 870, very near the railroads which employed the five men in the Girard sville district just north of Youngstown. The 1874 town maps by C J La ke, show E Mahon's homestead of 90 .5 acres in the east side of Libert y on both sides of the A and C W RR. In 1880 only the daughters Lydi a and young Maggie were still at home, the other children having move d on in their lives by then.
Lydia (McFarland) Mahan died in Liberty, Ohio on 22 April 1897. She ma de her extensive will (vol 16 pp 492-496, Trumbull co wills) naming al l her children and their spouses.
