He then moved with his wife Margaret (nee Leishman) a daughter of a Fifshire fisherman to Cupar, F ife. They stayed there for the next 50 years. They later moved to Australia to settle with their children's wives & families in 1852, arriving 29 April 1853, into Port Phillip Bay, Victoria on the ship 'Wonderer' He was listed as 'confectioner' o n the ship's manifest! There is no birth in Leith at all for a John in 1783 and the one for 1782 gives parents as Duncan and Isabel Ross, names not used for any of the children so unlikely. There are no births 1780-1785 for a John s/o John & Ann but extending the date criteria gives us a John b. 20 Nov 1771 Edinburgh s/o John and Ann Thomson. 79 Ancestry.com trees.
