[His father] James was apparently never able to keep a job for long, and James Edgar had taken to crime to support himself financially; by age 14 he had already had several arrests.
Sent to Preston Reformatory Mar 12, 1921 aged 17, he escaped May 7, 1923, but was captured and returned May 26, 1923; according to an "Oakland Tribune" article of 5/23/23, he was shot while escaping from police after a crime spree in the East Ba y and had a loaded gun under his pillow when caught

according to a report in the "Reno Herald" he was arrested for passing more than $25,000 in bad checks, and turned over to authorities in California, where he was on parole; no current parole records for this are available
