MILITARY: Civil War; Confederate;Private; Company A, 22nd Virginia Infantry, 1st Kanawha Regiment; Enlisted 15 Oct 1862 in Raleigh County, WV; served with brothers Nathaniel S. and Milton A., Privates; Wounded in mid 1863, apparently recovered from Aug 31 to Dec 31, 1863. He was paroled as a Prisoner of War May 1, 1865 in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia (at this time he was 39 years of age, Height: 5 ft, 9 inches, Complexion: Dark, Hair: Black, Eyes Black, (While in military, signed name as T.F. or Thornton F.); RECORDS OF NATIONAL ARCHIVES, photocopies of original viewed March 1997. From Family stories: Thornton was killed while serving in the army, or, apparently just after the Civil War.
