Louie Bremner was a pupil at Thorndon School, Wellington 1896-1900 (earlier records?) - see email from Don Montague 7 Aug 2001 and Louie Helen Macfarlane was on the Wellington North Electoral Roll for 1919.
The Social Gossip page of "New Zealand Free Lance" dated 22 Huitanguru (February) 1902 reported that "Miss Louie Bremner has returned from London". No other information!
Louie is reputed to have followed Trennie Macfarlane to South Africa, where they were married in 1908 (she would have been 24).
NZ Free Lance, 24 August 1907 (Social Gossip page)
The engagement is announced of Miss Louie Bremner, eldest daughter of the late D. J. Bremner, to Mr. T. M. Macfarland, of Durban, South Africa. The marriage will probably take place before Christmas.
The New Zealand Free Lance, 18 April 1908, carried the following report in its 'Social Gossip 'column:
"Many of her girl friends will be interested to read of the marriage of Louie, eldest daughter of the late Mr. David Bremner and Mrs Bremner, Tinakori Road, to Mr Trenwith Macfarlane, which took place on April 7th, at St Cyprian's Church, Durban. The pretty, girlish bride wore a dainty frock of soft white Indian silk, beautifully embroidered. The bodice was finished with silk embroideries, and a vest of fine lace. Her hat of blue crinoline straw was trimmed with large French roses, brown cock's feathers, and soft fluffy marabou. She also wore an exquisite pearl and diamond pendant, which was the gift of her aunt, Mrs Newman".
Evening Post, Wellington: 'Notes from London', 2 May 1911 reported: Mrs. T. Macfarlane (Wellington), who will perhaps be best remembered as Miss Louie Bremner, has come to England from South Africa with her little son, as the climate does not suit her. She will remain in London for a few months, and later she hopes to see something of the Continent, etc. For the past three years Mrs. Macfarlane's home has been in Durban.
They returned to NZ about 1913, with 2 children (Gordon and Ian). Photos taken of her at about that time show a lovely young woman.
Morna and Neil were born after the return to NZ. Trennie eventually abandoned the family while Louie was pregnant with Neil (who was born 1920) and she subsequently raised them on her own with the support of the Bremner family. She is reputed to have set herself the target of living to 80 - up until that time she was (in my memory) a sprightly old lady who rode a bicycle to the shops. Once she turned 80, her health deteriorated. She died in 1972, aged 88.
Buried in the "Rose Bushes" section of Marsden Valley Cemetery, Stoke, Nelson, NZ (Cemetery Block RSE, Plot 339).
Will filed at Nelson 14 Apr 1972 (No. 89/72)
