  Hard to know what exactly happens with his marriages. It seems that his first wife is Sarah J. Smith, who possibly died in childbirth. They do not appear together in any census report, yet William E. was born in 1864, and there is a big gap between him and the next siblings that show up in the 1880 census. In the 1870 census William E. McFarland is living with another family in Madison Co., and Jesse is working as a clerk in a store in Iron, St. Francois Co. living in the household of Jesse McFarland, age 50, and wife Sarah J.
