Notes - 14th Chief (1664-1679): John, son of Walter, married Grizel, daughter of Sir Colin Lamont of that Ilk, in 1645. By her he had three daughters: Jean, who married John Buchanan of Leny, in 1666; Giles, who married Alexander MacMillan of Dunmore in 1667; and Grizel, who married Archibald Buchanan of Torrie in 1673. After the death of Grizel in February 1650, John married Anne, a daughter of Campbell of Duntroon, relict of "The Captain of Carrick". By her he also had three daughters. As John had no sons, he was succeeded about 1679 by his brother Andrew. This is the first occasion where the succession of chiefs was other than from father to son over a period of 450 years. John signed the engagement for Arrochar to become a separate parish, with its own church and glebe.
