  • Notes
    • 10th Chief (1544-1547): Duncan, son of Andrew, joined with the Earls of Lennox and Glencairn in the Battle of Glasgowmuir (1544), in which they were defeated by the Regent Arran and the Catholic Party. He forfeited his lands, but was later granted a remission under the Privy Seal. Duncan was a staunch supporter of the Reformation, and was credited as (the first Protestant) "the first man of any importance in Scotland to make an open profession of the Christian religion." The chief of the clan for only three years, his term was marked by almost-warlike activity. Duncan died a soldier, along with a number of his clan in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh (10 September 1547) against the English. He married, first, Isabel Stewart, daughter of Andrew, Lord Ochiltree, without issue. He married, secondly, Catherine Anne Colquhoun, fourth daughter of Sir John Colquhoun of Luss and Margaret Stewart. They had two sons: Andrew, his heir; and Duncan. Andrew was only about three years old when his father died and he assumed the role of chief.
