  • Notes
    • 9th Chief (1514-c.1544): Andrew, known as "Andrew the Wizard." son of Sir John, was very adept at sleight-of-hand tricks, and astonished and frightened the country people with what they called witchcraft. Andrew is believed to have written the clan pibroch "Thogail nam Bo." He frequented the court of King James V and married Lady Margaret Cunningham, daughter of the Earl of Glencairn. He had two sons: Duncan, his heir, and George of Merkinch, progenitor of the Macfarlanes of Kirkton. He attacked Boturick Castle, which was owned by Haldane of Gleneagles (who had previously claimed, and lost, the Earl of Lennox title in a dispute with John Stewart of Darnley). It sat on the south east shore of Loch Lomond. Later, Andrew's half-brother Walter was in trouble with the law for killing some of Clan Colquhoun's people. Andrew died in the beginning of the reign of Queen Mary, about 1544.
