MARGARET (MCCLELLAND?) MCFARLAND (1781 to ca 1855)

Margaret (McClelland?) married Alexander McFarland about 1803 or 1804 , which is inferred from the age of their son John, born about 1805 . I have tentatively made her a daughter of (John?) McClelland, sinc e there is so much 'interaction' with Mc Clellands throughout this McFa rland family's life.
In Pennsylvania, where Alexander likely lived for the eight years prio r to his 1800 arrival in Coitsville, Ohio, there are numerous McClella nd families 'available' for him to meet. Margaret was born in Pennsylv ania about 1781 (1850 census), an d would be 23 at the time of her marr aige. In the 1820 Coitsville census (her age now thirty-nine), she ha s six sons and a daughter. At that time, a John McClelland (age 45+) a nd his family, live nearby to the south in Poland, Ohio. In 1830, t h e same John McClelland, (now aged 70-80), still lives in Poland. Thi s man could well be her father, since she is forty-nine in 1830. Proba te records should be checked here.
The 1840 Coitsville "heads of families" census, lists (widow) Margare t McFarlane, with two girls and two boys. Her next-door farmer neighbo rs, each with their families, are listed as; Andrew McFarlane, age 50- 60, (probably her brother-in-law) , and another Andrew McFarlane, age 2 0-30, who was likely her son. Also at that time, now nearby in Coitsvi lle, was a William McClelland, age 30-40, possibly her nephew or young er brother, and perhaps the appointed guardian of her younger child ren .
Again, in 1850, widow Margaret maintains her Coitsville household, no w only with her two youngest sons; James, age 35, and Robert, age 27 , who were both listed as laborers. Her son Alex McFarlane, who is no w age 40, a blacksmith, lives next doo r with his own family. William M cClelland, a farmer, age 48, born in Pennsylvania, also still lives ne arby. One of his daughters, Samantha McClelland, age 23, is living a t the Wm McClelland home. Later that year, Samantha marries a Willia m McF arland, probably son of William and Betsy (Loveland) McFarland.
Widow Margaret is not found in any of the 1860 or 1870 census schedule s for Coitsville and area. She perhaps died between 1850 and 1860.

Williams (1882) states that most of Alexander's seven sons and two dau ghters "settled in this vicinity" (*1 p 168). This John's name and bir thdate were taken from the IGI.
In March, 1833, the inventory of his father's estate states, "... Ale x, late of Poland..." and, later, "...Goods set off to widow and child ren; Sale held 16 Apr 1833; it says Alex of Coitsville. Some of the b uyers were: Andrew Margaret Willia m and Alexander McFarlane...8-538: p artial settlement, mentions cash paid to Alex. McF Jr and Andrew McF " . (*2)
John's name is not mentioned in his father's estate settlement (above) . This John may have died before his father Alexander's death in 1833 . Or, he may be the John McFarlane living in Poland near his brother A lexander McFarlane. If so, then h e was recently married and had a youn g daughter under five in 1840.
No further information was found in the censuses for 1850, 1860, and 1 870.

An unnamed male (a probable son) is shown in the 1820 census living wi th Alexander McFarland (b abt 1778). And again, in the 1830 census a n unnamed male (age 20-30) is also listed, now as the oldest (other th an the head of household; Alexande r McFarland). This male could be a s on; William.
In 1850, William and Sarah had a daughter named Margaret A McFarlan d - could be named after her grandmother Margery (Anderson) McFarland?
By 1870 this William's wife Sarah had moved to Newcastle, Lawrence co , Pennsylvania and was the head of the household, living there with da ughter Margaret and son James McFarland.
William's son Alexander J McFarlin's 1906 (Baldwin, PA) death cert nam es his father as William and mother as Sarah J Johnson. Informant wa s a W W McFarlin. Possibly William's son William?
Also, William's son James McFarlin's 1915 (Phila, PA) death cert name s his father as William and mother as Sarah Johnson. Infromant wa s a J W Craft.

Alexander McFarland was born Nov first 1811 in Coitsville, in (then) T rumbull co, Ohio at his parents home south of the village center. He w as the oldest of nine surviving children and was named after his fathe r.
Williams states that most of Alexander's seven sons and two daughters , "settled in this vicinity" (*1 p 168). This Alexander's name and bir thdate was taken from the IGI and his father's estate settlement.
In March, 1833, the inventory of his father's estate states, "... Alex , late of Poland...", and later states, "...goods set off to widow an d children; sale held 16 Apr 1833... Alex, of Coitsville... some of th e buyers were: Andrew, Margaret, Wi lliam, and Alexander McFarlane... p artial settlement, mentions cash paid to Alex. McFJr and Andrew McF.. . "(*2)
This son Alexander, born 1811, is likely helping his mother, Margare t settle his father's 1833 estate as shown above. About 1835 he marrie d Mary Lane of nearby Poland Ohio, daughter of shoemaker Samuel Lane , born in Maryland.
By 1840, Alexander McFarland is living just south of Coitsville in Pol and, Ohio almost next to his older brother John. Alexander is "engage d in manufacture and trade", likely blacksmithing. He has just his wif e and two little boys under five li ving there with him. In 1850 "Alex " is living in Coitsville, next to his widowed mother, Margaret McFarl and. He and his wife Mary have six children now with the two oldest bo ys; Alex age 14 and Samuel age 12. Nearby in Poland lives his wife Ma r y's father Samuel Lane, shoemaker.
Around 1852 their fourteen year-old son Samuel died. (Alex and Mary i n 1857 have a another son they named Samuel.)
In 1855, Alexander McFarlin(sic) bought a section of land in Wisconsin . Between 1855 and 1858, Alex, Mary and six children moved to Grand Ma rsh, Adams co, Wisconsin. They are listed there in 1860 with a new so n Samuel and (Mary's father) Samue l Lane, retired shoemaker, who is he lping run the home farm while Alex continues blacksmithing. Then in 18 70 they are all in Lincoln, Adams co Wisconsin where Alex continues bl acksmithing. Their son Stewart has now married and lives next door w it h his wife Frances Mary and baby daughter. Adjacent to Stewart lives A lex's daughter Sarah her son Samuel and daughter Amanda. So, four of t he children have come to Wisconsin to settle alongside their parents . Also in this family community i s Mary McFarlin's father Samuel Lane , back to shoemaking at age 79.
SAMUEL WINEGAR
A curious parallel is noted here. In the 1840 Poland, Ohio census ther e is a certain Samuel "Wingar" listed between Alexander McFarland (bla cksmith) and his brother John McFarland. In 1850 this Samuel "Wingard " had moved to Walworth co, Wiscons in. In 1860 Samuel "Wyenger" and fa mily were living in Grand Marsh, Adams co, Wisconsin, as was Alexande r McFarland and his family. Then, in 1870 Samuel "Winegar" and Alexand er McFarland and their families were in the same town; Lincoln, Ada m s co, Wisconsin. Ten years later in 1880, Samuel "Winegar" and his so n Frank were living next door to William McFarland and (brother) Stewa rt McFarland. This constant connection of families and places usuall y means intermarraige, but just wha t the connection is has not been de termined yet.
The Lincoln, Wisconsin 1880 census lists blacksmith Alex McFarlin an d wife Mary with 22 year-old son Samuel who is helping on their home f arm. Important note; Alex's father is listed as born in Ireland. Als o living nearby are their other two so ns, William and Stewart, each wi th their own homes and families. Seventy-one year-old Samuel C Winega r is living next to the two McFarlin sons.
Alexander McFarlin died 14 Dec 1883 in Adams co, Wisconsin and his wif e Mary died 13 Dec 1891. They both were buried in the Newchester cemet ery, Grand Marsh , Adams co, Wisconsin with many of their family.

In March, 1833, the inventory of Andrew's father's estate states, ".. . Alex, late of Poland..." and later, that, "...Goods set off to wido w and children; Sale held 16 Apr 1833... Alex of Coitsville, some of t he buyers were: Andrew, Margaret, Wi lliam, and Alexander McFarlane...p artial settlement, mentions cash paid to Alex. McF, jr and Andrew Mc F " (*2).
This Andrew was twenty-one at the time of his father Alexander's deat h in 1833, and was likely the buyer mentioned above. In the 1840 censu s he is living in Coitsville with his wife, two young daughters an d a son under five (Alexander).
In 1850, Andrew McFarland is living in Poland, the town adjacent and j ust to the south of Coitsville. Their children's names are; Margaret , Nancy, Alexander, Rebecca, Hannah John and Emeline. The two boys ar e named after their grandfather Alexa nder and great grandfather John o r their mother's father?
This same Andrew and wife Ann are then found in the 1860 census in nea rby Irwin, Pennsylvania, perhaps near to Ann's unknown family. Their s on Alexander is now married to Margaret Book and is living next door t o his parents Andrew and Ann.
By 1870, Andrew, Ann and five children had moved to Shenango, Mercer c o, Pennsylvania where he continued farming. Andrew lived next to his b rother Samuel McFarland there in Shenango in 1870.
I could not find further information about Andrew or Ann.

McFarlane late of Coits ville. James and Samuel made their o wn choice..." (*2). In 1840 he i s apparently with his widow mother Margaret helping to run the home fa rm.
In 1850 James is thirty-five and living in Coitsville still with his w idow mother Margaret McFarland and younger brother Robert. 1850 censu s noted that James could not read or write.
James apparently was listed a second time at his place of work for "ir onmaster" Frederick Wilkes, in Poland, Ohio. There he is a clerk.
No further information found.

In the Trumbull co Marraige index is found; "Samuel McFarland to Maria h Kirk, on 12 May 1842, at Coitsville by Wm Nisbbitt."
1850 is the first census listing Samuel, where he is living in Shenang o, Mercer co, PA with his wife Mary and sons Ralph K and Mead. Samuel' s occupation is a blacksmith.
The 1860 census of Shenango, Mercer co, PA lists Samuel and Mary McFar land with three children; Samuel, Caleb, and Alice. No Ralph or Mead a re present - they died young. Also living with them is Elizabeth Kirkp atrick age 75 born in Pennsylvania . She is Elizabeth (Baldwin) Kirkpat rick, Samuel's mother.
In 1870 Samuel McFarland is living next to his brother Andrew in Shena ngo, Mercer co, Pennsylvania, with only his Caleb, age sixteen. His wi fe Mary (Kirkpatrick) was not located in the 1870 census.
The 1880 Shenango, PA census shows Samuel, as a widower, living only w ith a housekeeper and some boarders. He gives the information that hi s father (Alexander b 1770's) was born in Ireland and mother [Elizabet h (Baldwin) Kirkpatrick] was born i n Pennsylvania. However, in anothe r 1880 census from Canfield, Ohio, his wife Mary is found living wit h their son Caleb. She is listed as being married. A bit of a myster y here as to why Samuel and Mary are living apart.
Samuel McFarlin's (sic) headstone (1818-1895) is found in the Haywoo d Cemetery, West Middlesex, Mercer co, PA along with his wife Mary's ( 10 June 1822 - 28 Jan 1909) and their two infant sons markers; R Mead e McFarlin (1848-1850) and Ralph K Mc Farlin (1848-1850).

Alexander 'McFarlane' was born in Coitsville, Ohio where his father An
drew was living on the road near the Poland town line, south of Coitsv ille Center. By 1850 the Andrew 'McFarlane' family had moved into Pola nd near the McKeevers, Struthers and Hoggs. At that time eleven year-o ld Alexander had five sisters an
d one younger brother, John (a four ye ar-old twin with Hannah). His mother Ann had been born in Pennsylvania . By 1860 Alexander 'McFarland' had just married Margaret (nee' Book ) and was living in Irwin, Venango co, Pennsylvania next to his pare nt s who had also moved there. Both he and his father were listed as farm ers, the most common occupation of the time and place.
Alex 'McFarland' had moved by 1870 to Hickory township (P.O. New Castl e), Lawrence co, PA. Here he owned a modest home and was identified a s a 'teamster'. Now he and Margaret had four children; Sarah M. age 8 , Margaret age 6, Julius H. age 4, a nd Clarinda (sic), ie Clarence, bo rn in May, 1870.
Alex 'McFarland' moved his family again by 1880 to West Lackawanna, Me rcer co, PA where he was working in a sawmill along with two boarder s he had taken in. Only two children were living with Alex and Margare t then; Julius H. age 14, and Claren ce E. age ten (now identified a s a male).
Alexander McFarlin was buried in the United Brethren Cemetery in Wes t Middlesex co, Beaver PA. Headstone gives dates; b 19 Mar 1839 an d d 4 Nov 1895. His wife Margaret is also named on headstone but wit h only date of birth as 1838.

In 1870, Julius H McFarland, age four, is first noted living with hi
s parents Alex and Margaret McFarland and three siblings in Hickory, L awrence co, Pennsylvania. His father is a teamster, which Julius late r also becomes. In 1880 Julius and his younger brother Clarence are li ving with their parents Alex and Ma
rgaret in West Lackawannock, Merce r co, Pennsylvania. His father and two boarders are working in a sawmi ll there.
For the next thirty years, I found no trace of Julius. The thread is a gain picked up in 1910 when a Lewis McFarland is enumerated in the U S census in Poland, Mahoning co, Ohio where his father Alexander had l ived when a young man in 1850. Juliu s has located in Lowellville, a vi llage in Poland township, where he has shortened his name to Lewis (fr om Julius) and is living as a single man of 44 in his small home. Her e he is working as a teamster for a sawmill, something he had grow n u p learning when his father was a teamster in 1870.
I believe this same man re-located in 1920 Big Beaver, Pennsylvania a s J.H. McFarlan age 54 living only with his wife named Alice age 57. H e is working on his own account as a laborer on a farm. In 1930 Lewi s McFarland age 65 and wife Alice ag e 68 are still living in Big Beave r where he is now working as a laborer for the RR company. Here he own s a modest home and they are living alone together.
So, it appears that Julius H. McFarland modified his name to Lewis an d had no children. He and wife Alice seem to have no further records , as to census or cemeteries.

She was born in Minnesota on April 21, 1924 to John and Belle (Tower ) Henry. In June of 1941 she married Gordon McFarlin and together the y raised a family of 10 children.

Lila enjoyed reading and writing poetry, gardening, doing crossword pu zzles and spending time with her family, especially her many grand an d great-grandchildren. She was a very devoted person, reading scriptur es daily and she enjoyed listenin
g to religious music as well as playi ng music. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Lila is survived by: two sons: Dennis (Gerri) of Jacksonville, FL an d Gordon Jr. of Montello, five daughters: Kathy (Gary) Morrical of Jan esville, Mary (Joe) Larson of Stevens Point, Paula (Jesse) Knutson o f West Allis, Lona (Randy) Hardell o f Montello, and Lori (Mark) Murph y of Pardeeville. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 26 grea t-grandchildren. Lila is further survived by her sister, Ada Hietala o f Bovey, MN.

Lila is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon, parents and 3 sons : Gene, Michael, and James McFarlin as well as grandchildren Jesse an d Sherry McFarlin. She is also preceded in death by three sisters: Lol a, Eva and Olive and one brother.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 23, 2010 at noon at t he Crawford Funeral Home with Rev. Jesse Knutson officiating. Visitati on will be held Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at th e funeral home. Burial will follo w at New Chester Cemetery, Town of Ne w Chester, Adams County.

Lona L. Hardell, age 54, of Montello passed away peacefully early Wedn
esday morning, April 27, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer a t the St. Clare Hospice House in Baraboo.

She was born in Ripon, WI on November 1, 1956 to Gordon and Lila (Henr y) McFarlin. Lona graduated from Montello High School in 1975 and marr ied Randy Hardell at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Montello on Octobe r 7, 1978.

Lona was a hard working and caring person. She was an avid gardener an d enjoyed traveling whenever possible. Lona loved spending time with h er family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Lona is survived by her husband, Randy, two children: Seth Hardell an d Kiley (Douglas) Lloyd, both of Montello and six siblings: Lori (Mark ) Murphy of Pardeeville, Kathy (Gary) Morrical of Janesville, Gordon J r. of Montello, Paula (Jesse) Knuts
on of Milwaukee, Mary (Joe) Larso n of Stevens Point and Dennis (Gerri) of Jacksonville, FL. She is furt her survived by her sister-in-law, Julie Riley of Anchorage, AK and ma ny nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Lona is preceded in death by her parents and three siblings: Mike, Ji m and Gene McFarlin.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 2:30 p.m . at the Crawford Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Friday fro m 4:00 until 7:00p.m. at the funeral home and again on Saturday from 1 :30 p.m. until the hour service. Pa stor Pete Zietlow will officiate an d burial will follow at Black Creek Cemetery, St. Marie Township, Gree n Lake County. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the orga nization of your choice.
