shall come Greeting Whereas by virtue of a Warrant under
the Seal of our Land office bearing Date the thirtieth Day of Septem
ber in the Year of our Lord 1747 there was surveyed and laid out
unto Robert McFarland of the County of Lancaster a certain
Tract of Land situate on Chickasalungo Creed in Donegal Township
within the said County bounded and described as follows viz. Begin
ning at a marked Water Beech tree standing on the bank of the
said Creek and from thence extending by Robert McFarland Senior’s
Land and Land of the Widow Work North seventy three Degrees
West three hundred and eighty two Perches to a marked Black Oak
thence by the said Widow Work’s Land and Land of William Mitch
el South by East one hundred and sixty four Perches to a Port
thence by Land late of John McFarland East two hundred
and eighty Perches to a Post standing on the Bank of the
said Creek thence up the said Creek on the several courses there
of one hundred and sixty two Perches to the Place of Beginning
containing two hundred and six acres and the allowance of
six acres per Cent for Roads and Highways as in and by the
survey thereof remaining in our Survey or General office and

Instance and request of the Said Robert McFarland that
we would be pleased to grant him a Confirmation of the
same Know Ye that in Consideration of the Sum of thir

Father Robert McFarland Sr. died in 1751 and his estate is settled.

Lancaster County Deed Book C, pp. 299-300, FHL microfilm #21382: March 3rd, 1752, Robert McFarland sells to Ludwick Lyndemote his 206 acre patent for 190 pounds lawful money, that will be paid out in payments in May 1754, 1755, 1756, and 1757.

Lancaster County Deed Book D, pp. 130-131, FHL microfilm #21383: March 2, 1752 records the sale by Robert McFarland and his wife Esther to Ludwick Lyndemote for the 206 acre patent. This was not recorded until June 8, 1754 and is signed by Robert and Esther (with a mark). It looks like Ludwick Lyndemote paid off his note early, and with that obligation fulfilled, this deed was then made official. It does not appear that Robert and Esther were present, this was a sealed document that was delivered to the court by Ludwick Lyndemote.

Peters township, Cumberland Co. PA
Robert McFarland appears on the Peters township, Cumberland Co. tax list in 1753. The year before, he was not present. There was, however a Widow McFarland on the tax list. in 1751 and in 1753. I assume this is Catherine McFarland, widow of Joseph McFarland who died in 1750 in Cumberland Co. Administrators Book V. A-D 1750-1845, FHL, film 1010109 through FamilySearch.org

In 1769 a Robert McFarland acquires a patent for his land in what is Peters township, Cumberland Co., and in 1778, he and his wife Esther sell this land in Cumberland Co. and move to Rockbridge Co. VA. It is my belief now that the Robert of Cumberland/Rockbridge is the same Robert Jr. from Lancaster Co. PA.

Some trees claim that the Robert McFarland in Caswell Co. NC is this Robert, but that doesn't seem likely anymore. Y-DNA tests for a descendant of that Robert of Caswell/Person Co. NC shows a relationship in the Cadet lineage, but has a different marker at DYS 576 from all the other men who are descended from Robert of Lancaster Co.
The Robert McFarland who died in 1780 in Caswell Co. NC, appeared in NC in 1760 with his first purchase of land from Hugh Barnet of 573 acres in Orange County. Caswell Co. was carved from Orange Co. in 1777. However as early as 1752 a John McFarland is called to be a juror in Orange County and in 1761 John McFarland, James McFarland are to work on a road and Robert McFarland is appt. to a jury and is to lay out a road. In 1762-66 a Robert Sr. and Jr. are mentioned to lay out roads from Hugh Barnett's line. Gary Morris thinks that this Robert McFarland came as an indentured servant and was born in 1731 in Scotland.

Mary Helen Haines notes: the DAR record for this individual is wrong. It is patriotic service based on testimony given at a trial in Augusta Co. in 1776. This Robert McFarland was not in Virginia until 1778. It was Robert McFarland, son of Duncan, living in Augusta Co. in 1776.

This Indenture made the first day of September in the year of our
Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Seven [1777] between
Robert McFarland [Senior] of Peters Town in Cumberland County in
the Province or Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Yeoman and Esther his
wife of the one part, and Robert McFarland Junior of Tinicum
Township in the County of Bucks in the said Province of
Pennsylvania Yeoman of the other part. Whereas Thomas Penn and
Richard Penn Esquires: Proprietors of the Province of Pennsylvania
in and by their patent bearing date the fifth day of December 1769
for the Consideration therein Mentioned did sell grant release
convey and conspire unto the above name Robert McFarland Sen'r his
heirs and assigns forever a Certain Tract or Parcel of Land Called

BIOGRAPHY: Robert McFarland was born about 1705 in (perhaps Tyrone County), Ireland, son of Robert McFarland. When he was about 25 to 35 years old, he came to America with his father and family, first settling in Phildalephia, Pennsylvania.
...It is most likely in Philadelphia that Robert met his first wife, and they had at least five children that reached maturity. She must have died about 1747/1750.
...At least by 1751 Robert had moved to Peters Township, Cumberland (that part now in Franklin) County, Pennsylvania. There, in about 1751 he married his second wife, Esther _____ (last name perhaps Houston). They had at least 8 children, all born in Peters Township.
...About the summer of 1778 Robert sold his land holdings in Peters Township and moved, along with his wife and all children by his second wife, their families, and at least one nephew, to Rockbridge County, Virginia. There he remained the rest of his years, dying Christmas Day in 1797. Esther died there in 1794.

Cousins, Joseph (1761) and William McFarland (1755) of Peters Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, fought in the revolutionary war. After the war they settled in Rockbridge County, Virginia where they married the sisters Rebecca and Margaret White. Around 1783, Joseph (1761) removed to Greene County, Tennessee, where he remained until about 1793 when he removed to Harrison County, Kentucky. About the same time, his father William (1731) and his brothers William (1763) and Benjamin (1765) joined him there. His cousin and brother-in-law William (1755) also came about that time. These five gentlemen are the seed for the McFarland families of Harrison County, Kentucky. Virtually none of the family would remain however. They began to migrate to Greene County, Ohio beginning with William (1763) who arrived there between 1798 and 1803. Joseph (1761) moved there in 1810, and Arthur must have arrived before 1814 when his daughter Eliza was born. It is unknown what became of Benjamin (1765) after 1810, but presumably he migrated with the family and died soon after, or he died in Kentucky and his family migrated with the rest of the McFarland clan. The patriarch of the family, William (1731) died around the time of the migration. It is thought his wife survived him and died in Ohio.

HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY.

William McFarland, Esq., emigrated from Kentucky, and came with his family to this township about 1804, and purchased one hundred and fifty acres of land on Massie's Creek, a short distance from where Cedarville now stands. There was no trading point then nearer than Xenia, and that was a small affair. Salt was hauled from Chillicothe, and could not be had nearer. Mr. McFarland soon became a prominent man in the sparsely settled neighborhood, and served as foreman on the first grand jury in the county, in 1804.

There are two William McFarlands in Cumberland Co. PA during the Revolutionary War. It all depends on the unit and what part of the county it is connected with. The other William McFarland lived in Pennsboro township. This William McFarland lived in Peters township. He does not show up again until 1790 with 2 Tithes, meaning men above 16. That continues in 1791, 1792, 1793, 1794, and then in 1795 he shows with one tithe.

In 1797 Thomas appears with 2 tithes again. In 1798, 1799 then a James appears for the first time in 1799. In 1800 a John appears for the first time, he is est. born abt. 1778.

QUESTIONABLE LINK: Robert had a daughter Jean McFarland born about 1740. Not
sure if she was married to James Wilkins, but seems very likely. James Wilkins
had a wife Jean. He lived adjacent to Robert Sr. and James McFarland. He had
a brother in law Robert McFarland. Thus, either James Wilkins wife was a
McFarland (Jean McFarland), or (2) Wilkins sister married James McFarland
(however, James McFarland married Mary Campbell), or (3) less likely, Wilkins
wife's sister married James McFarland. In this case, Wilkins would be married
to _____ Campbell. But, since James went to (West) Virginia to marry Mary
Campbell, this seems even less likely. Thus, by suggestive evidence, James
Wilkins married Jean McFarland.

CONFLICT: There is slight evidence to suggest that James Wilkins married Jean
Rankin. The Ancestral File at FHC lists a James Wilkins (born 1734 in Donegal,
Lancaster County, PA, died Oct 1809 Centre, Indiana County, PA), married 1763 in
Franklin Co, PA to Jean Rankin (died 1809). Their listed children are not the
same as James Wilkins in his will. I originally "wrote" this off as completely
unrelated, however the married 1763 in Franklin County to Jean Rankin, is
somewhat related, as the 1800 census of James McFarland in Montgomery Township,
lists him as a neighbor of Jeremiah Rankin and Ana Rankin.

Is this his first marriage? He would have been 36...this seems a little late. If he stayed in Cumberland Co., Peters township after his father sold land to Robert, son of Joseph of Bucks Co. in 1778, then there should be two Robert McFarlands in the tax lists or census records, and there is not.

The records below from 1778 on would be for Robert, son of Joseph.
However, there is a record for a Robert McFarland, Jr. serving under Capt. Wm. Huston in 1780. Penn. Archives, 5th Series, Vol. 6, p. 270. Since James McFarland (his brother) also served under Capt. Wm. Huston, this could be correct.

I have debated which James McFarland in the area of Franklin Co. PA should be the son of Robert McFarland, son of Robert of Lancaster and have concluded that this James in Hamilton township must be the one. He is present too early to be the son of Joseph McFarland of Bucks Co. Besides, Joseph of Bucks does not name a son James in his will. We know that Robert, son of Robert, did have a son named James according to his 1797 will. As you can see from the notes below, this James was present as early as 1763 in Hamilton township. Robert had moved to Cumberland (Franklin) by 1753. As noted below, there must have been two (or possibly three?) James McFarlands who were having families in the 1760s thru 1780s.

In the 1786 tax lists there are three James McFarlins-one in Montgomery township, one in Guilford township, and one in Hamilton.

Kentucky Benjamins:
The Rockcastle River flows from border of present day Jackson and Rockcastle Counties down as border between Pulaski and Laurel counties until it joins the Cumberland River near Honeybee dividing McCreary and Whitley counties.

The 1810 Washington County census is probably refering to a different Benjamin from the Benjamin who received the land grant for 1000 acres. The children, William and James are the children of the Washington Co. Benjamin.

There is a Benjamin Mc Farland in Harrison Co. KY in 1810 with 2 men over 25 in the family. Also present in Harrison Co. is Joseph Mc Farland with 2 over 25, and 6 under 25. The Benjamin appears to be the son of Robert McFarland (1730 to abt. 1798 KY, married to a Martha) who moved to Marion Co. Indiana in 1826. The Joseph is the one who was married to Margaret White.

North Carolina/Tennessee Benjamin married to Elizabeth Nelson. Strong possibility.

Note Robert Nelson lives on Jacobs Creek, father of Elizabeth Nelson who married Benjamin. Note James Hayes lives on Jacobs Creek, father of Sarah Hayes who married Benjamin's son, Robert B. McFarlin.
Iron Works and Speedwell Furnance
Directly south of Jacobs Creek is Ironworks Road. Benjamin was a blacksmith. (The Journal of Rockingham County History and Genealogy; Vol. III; No. 2; October 1978; pg. 58
"The Iron Works millsite is located on Troublesome Creek (so called because it was subject to sudden flooding) on State Road 2423 approximately 1.5 miles north of Monroetoe. For over one hundred and fifty years the Iron Works was an important site in Rockingham County with activities including: furnances for smelting iron, the operation of gristmills, sawmills, and blacksmith shops, and the operation of a store and an ordinary. " (ordinary = pub)
The church on the map, New Bethel Church 1799 is not currently in existance. It is unknown exactly where the church stood or what demonination it was. It's existance is known only from county court records that mention the church. No known church records exist.
No known area cemeteries dating back to the period. On the hill near the Jacobs Creek Fire station there is an old cemetery. Graves where marked with field stones and rarely had identifying marks.
The area where Benjamin lived on Jacobs Creek originally was Rowan County formed in 1753, then became Guilford County formed in 1771, then Rockingham County formed in 1785.

...SCOTT, DR. HERVEY, was born at Oldtown, Greene county, Ohio, January 30,
1809. Until the close of his seventeenth year he worked on the farm with his
father, enduring the hardships, privations and struggles of purely frontier
life. His early education, such as it was, was received in the little rough log
school-houses of the pioneer age, by the light of oiled paper windows. In
February, 1826, he went to live in the Mitton family, in South Charleston,
Clark county, Ohio, to go to school and learn the trade of manufacturing
spinning wheels. In 1833 he commenced the study of the medical profession, and
in 1836 went into the practice. Two years later he changed his profession to
that of dentistry, and in April, 1839, located in Lancaster, where he has
continued to reside to the present time. On the 7th of November, 1830, he was
first married to Lydia Ann Milton, of South Charleston, who died childless on
the 12th day of June, 1841. On the 10th day of April, 1842, he was a second
time married to Priscilla Ann Crook, of Lancaster, who was the mother of his
children. Her death occurred on the 14th day of July, 1873. In May, 1875, he
was married to his third wife, Sophia Stebbin, of Chicopee, Massachusetts, who
deceased October 10, 1852. His family consisted of six children, viz.: Hervey,
Mary Elizabeth, Sarah M., John Clark, Charles Robert, and William Derbin. Mary
Elizabeth and Charles Robert died respectively at the ages of two years and at
eight months. Hervey died at Chillicothe, November 29, 1873, at the age of
thirty years and seven months. He left a widow (Mrs. Emma Scott) and one son
(Hervey Howe), now residents of Lancaster. Sarah M. married Charles Hutchison,
and is at present residing in Toledo, Ohio. She is the mother of two children
---Mary Hamilton and Helen. Helen died at the age of a little over one month,
in December, 1881. J. Clark married Ida O'Harra, of Columbus, in 1874. They
have had three sons---George, Walter, and Starling. George died in September,
1882, at the age of over seven years. J. Clark resides in Lancaster, and is by
profession a dentist. The ancestors of Dr. Scott first came to America in the
early part of the eighteenth century. On the father's side they were Irish; on
the mother's Scotch. The Scotts settled first in North Carolina, and there his
father was born. The McFarlands, which was the name on the mother's side,
settled in Rockbridge county, Virginia, and there his mother was born. During
the troublous times of the Revolution between Whig and Tory, the grandfather,
being a Whig, sought safety by removing his family to Rockbridge county,
Virginia. Near the close of the century both families, with others, removed to
and settled in Kentucky, first at the Crab Orchard and afterwards on Indian
Creek, near Cynthiana, in Harrison county. The place on which the Scott family
settled, on Indian Creek, is known to this day as "Scott Station," on account
of a garrison of soldiers having been stationed there to protect the frontiers
during the Indian troubles. There the doctor's parents were married in 1800,
and in 1808 emigrated to Ohio and settled at Oldtown, near Xenia. The Scott
family consisted of eleven children, of whom the doctor is the fourth, viz.:
Rachel, Margaret, William, Hervey, Milton, Washington, Cynthia (the two latter
were twins), Clark, Emily, Benjamin, and Joseph. Washington, Clark, Emily, and
Benjamin, died in childhood; Joseph died at the age of eighteen years;
Margaret, the second in age, died at the age of about sixty years; and Rachel,
the first born, died in infancy; four are living ---William and Milton, in
Madison county, Ohio; Cynthia, in Thorntown, Ind.; and Hervey, in Lancaster.
The name of the grandfather Scott was Ahram, and that of grandfather McFarland
was William. All four of the grand parents died respectively between 1812 and
1820, at their homes on Indian Creek. Moses was father of the doctor and Lettie
his mother. The mother died in August, 1842, aged sixty-two years; the father
died in October, 1865, at the age of ninety-two years.

oldest brother, was born in 1760 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. &ltNote,

Ohio&gt, and it is said that he was 105 years old when he died. Robert Endicott
(Indicott) daughter was our grandfathers mother. Her oldest child Robert
McFarland was born in 1760.

FHC, page 798.. Under biography of son Thomas S. McFarland. Robert McFarland
was born in Rockbridge County, VA, near the Natural Bridge March 7, 1783; his
parents moved to Tennessee in 1796, and for ten years he lived at different
places in that State and in Kentucky. In October, 1806, he, in company with
Martin Hitt and Joseph Diltz, made an excursion on horseback to Champaign
County, Ohio, where he located in the following year. When he arrived in this
county, his goods were unloaded in the woods beside an oak log, and, after
paying his teamster, he had 50 cents in money to start with. He rented farms
at different places in teh county till 1811, when he purchased 80 acres of land
in Sec. 14 of Concord Township, which he cleared and improved. He was Township
Clerk from 1819 to 1831; was Assesssor for a number of years, and was also a
local minister in the M.E. Church for upward of fifty years. He was the
founder of Concord Chapel. His marriage with Deborah Gray was celebrated Dec
27, 1804. She died Oct 12, 1814, the mother of five children, two of whom are
living-- William H., living east of Urbana, and Elizabeth, now Mrs. Nichols of
Illinois. On Dec 3, 1814, he married Elizabeth Kenton, a grand-neice of Gen.
Simon Kenton, by whom he had three children, viz., Deborah, now Mrs. Kenton,
residing in Kansas; Frances, now Mrs. Conroy, of Shelby Co, Ohio and Rebecca
Gibbs, of St. Paris. Elizabeth McFarland departed this life Jan 8, 1821. On
the 23d of August of the same year he was united in marriage with Eunice
Dorsey, a native of Maryland, born Feb 3, 1797. By this union they had eleven
children. Eight are still living--Sarah J. Huston, of DeGraff, Ohio; John M.
of this township, Robert W. of the Ohio State University at Columbus, Cynthia
A. Gibbs of St. Paris, Ohio, Thomas S., James R. of Goshen, New York, Mary C.
Pence of this township, and Benjamin S., living in Kansas. Prov R. W.
McFarland is a a natural born mathematician, and is a thorough scholor. Robert
McFarland departed this life dec 28, 1863; his wife survived till Sep 17,
1869. The subject of this sketch was born Jul 14, 1832. He was raised a
farmer's boy, and received a common-school education. His chief occupation has
been tilling the soil. He now owns the old home farm and 16 acres besides,
making 96 acres in all. He has been public auctioneer for nineteen years,
couselor for eighteen years,and has been Secretary of the Champaign and Logan
County Pioneer Association for the last six years. Has been a newspaper
contributor for twenty-eight years, and is President of the Editors and
Reporters Association of this county. He has also been very successful as a
detective. In 1856 Sep 30 he married Ursula H. Evans, of Kentucky, born Dec
23, 1829. She died Dec 14, 1864, the mother of one child -- Evans White, who
met his death Apr 20, 1871 by a horse falling on him. Thomas S. McFarland and
Catherine Evans were married March 20, 1866. She is also a native of Virginia,
a sister of Ursula H., born Oct 13, 1834. The fruits of this marriage are four
children--Hattie B., Rebecca J., Sallie DeVoe adn Thomas D.C.

subsequently settled on Indian Creek, near Cynthiance, Kentucky.

McFarland, was a native of Rockbridge County, VA, and was taken by his parents
when still a child to Tennessee and shortly afterwards to Kentucky. In 1807
Robert came to Champaign County to make a permanent location. ...a prospecting
trip with Martin Hitt and Joseph Diltz. The impelling reason for McFarlands
leaving Kentucky was his intense hatred of slavery. In Oct 1807 the McFarland
family arrived in the county and stopped for a short time in the Northern part
of the present Union Township. ...They quickly made a cabin. In this cabin,
William McFarland and his family and Joseph Gray, his father-in-law, lived from
October until the following spring. They then moved to Salem Township on a
tract about half way between Urbana and West Liberty. Still later the two

Page 1105 Thomas Sims McFarland, one of the most prominent local
historians, was born in Concord Township July 14, 1832 and died March 19, 1914.
Son of Robert McFarland. T.S. McFarland was one of 19 children.

JAMES P. DUNLAP, proprietor of the Lone Star Nursery, and farmer Section 19, P.
O. Lone Star, came to Nebraska in June, 1866; first settled in Saunders County,
in Newman Precinct, where he resided until 1870, when he came to Butler County,
located where he now lives; was among the first settlers in that locality. Here
he has one of the finest nurseries in Butler or surrounding counties. It
consists of over seven acres of ground and is well filled with all kinds of
fruit trees best adapted to the climate of the State of Nebraska and other
Western States. Mr. D. was married in Saunders County, Neb., March 23, 1870 to
Miss Christina Campbell, who was a daughter of Peter Campbell (deceased), of
Chapman Precinct, Saunders County, and the oldest one of this family of
children that was captured at Kearney Junction by the Sioux Indians, which is a
fact already recorded in this history of Nebraska. He is now Justice of the
Peace in his precinct, and was the first Assessor in the four southwestern
precincts in Saunders County. He was born in Gasconade County, Mo., March 5,
1845; is a son of Nelson and Mahala Dunlap, from Rockbridge County, W. Va.,
whose ancestors were early settlers of that country; is a brother of Dr. W. B.
Dunlap, of Adams County, Ill. His mother was a sister of Lewis McFarland, of
Camp Point, Adams Co., Ill., whose ancestors were early settlers of Miami
County, Ohio, and are considerably connected with the history of that county.
He is a member of A., F. & A. M., Fidelity Lodge. No. 51, David City. Their
family consists of four children--Nelson C., Agnes, Christina and Patience.
