JAMES MCFARLAND/MCFARLIN - SCOTS/IRISH IMMIGRANT and OHIO DISTILLER (1
795 - 1838)

ARRIVAL IN PENNSYLVANIA - THEN TO OHIO
James McFarland, was just one year old when he arrived in America wit h his family in 1796. This date of arrival is chosen since his two old er brothers, Alexander and William, both stated that was the year whe n they had immigrated to America (*1
). I assume the whole family arriv ed in America together, including their father John.
As shown before, in the notes for his mother and older brothers and si sters, the family spent about four years elsewhere in Pennsylvania. Th en by 1799/1800 they lived about two years in Hopewell (New Bedford) , Mercer county, Pennsylvania with h is mother's brother, John Anderson . (see his 1800 US census pg 433 for Mercer co, PA)
About 1802/1803, the widow Margery McFarland, with her four sons and t wo daughters, came to Coitsville, Ohio. James was about seven then an d no doubt helped out on the family farm. He remained with his mother , Margery for the rest of her life i n Coitsville (she died in 1835).
By the 1820 census, he is newly married and head of his own family, ha ving settled "...on the road leading west from the village..." (*2 p 1 68). His wife is Melissa Hard, possibly a weaver, since she is from th e sheep farming area of Huntsbur g (Franklin co), Vermont.
James is said to have had one of the four early distilleries in Coitsv ille, his older brother William having another (*2 p 171). They "...pu shed their business with energy for some years, consuming about twenty -four bushels of grain daily at le ast one hundred and fifty days out o f the year, thirty-six hundred bushels per annum, and putting upon th e market nine thousand gallons, more or less, of ardent spirits". Jam es, the distiller, may be the person in his 1820 Ohio census househol d , 'engaged in manufactures' (unless it might be his wife Melissa, runn ing a loom?).
When his first son is born in 1823, they name him John Anderson McFarl and; probably the John after James' father, and the Anderson for his m other's maiden name. By 1830, they have three children living with the m; probably Mary, John and Louisa . Also in their household is James' m other, widow Margery, the original pioneer matriarch from Ireland. How ever, she dies in 1835, seventy-nine years old.
James then died in June of 1838 at age 43 (*3). His estate was probate d from 21 June 1838 to June 1841. At the latter date, a John Stewart w as chosen guardian by both his son John Anderson McFarlin, age 18, an d daughter Louisa McFarlin, age 14 , and the same John Stewart is appoi nted guardian to the younger children; Sarah M McFarlin, age 8, Lysand er J McFarlin, age 6 and Robert W McFarlin, age 4. The 'McFarlin' spel ling of the surname was used in these probate record's (*4). James w a s buried near his mother in the Hopewell Presbyterian cemetery, New Be dford, Pennsylvania (*5). This is where most of the early settlers o f Coitsville were interred since it was the nearest church in the earl y 1800's.
The Hopewell Cemetery records indicate that his mother's name was MARG ARET, and James' last name in 1838 was spelled MCFARLIN (*6).
Melissa carried on, raising the family, and remained a widow for forty -seven years.

MARY JANE (MCFARLIN) BRECKENRIDGE (1821 to 1911)

This first child of James and Melissa (Hard) McFarlin was born in Coit sville, Trumbull co, Ohio on 12 October, 1821. She married William Bre ckenridge about 1840 and remained in Coitsville. In 1850 William, Mar y and children live next door to he r brother John McFarlin and his wif e Sarah. In John's household is their mother, Melissa McFarlin.
Her husband William Brackenridge III died 10 Aug 1854 and by 1860, Mar y had moved with her five children to Viola, Mercer co, Illinois, wher e she remained through 1900. In both 1880 and 1900 she reports that he r father (James) was born in Irela nd.
By 1910 Mary was living with her farmer son Hugh and family in Grant , Kansas. Mary McFarlin Breckenridge died in Kansas at age eighty-nine .
She was buried in the Hollis cemetery, Cloud co, Kansas.

The 1900 census from Wolf Creek, PA also shows (Jame's son) John A McFarlin (a77) and wife Levina (Kimmel) (a68) now living alone there. The plac e of birth given for John's father (James) is, again, Ireland. These two data give further "proof" that Margery McFarlin came to America at least after about 1796, since James' birthdate appears to be 1795.

2 - JOHN ANDERSON MCFARLIN (1823 - 1901)

John Anderson McFarlin was born on his father James' farm in Coitsville, Ohio and grew up there. In 1840 and 1850 he i s with his mother Melissa, and brothers and sisters. In 1860 John is s till in Coitsville and is now married to Lavina, has tw o small childre n and his mother still is with them. By 1870 he has moved to Wolf Cree k, Mercer co, Pennsylvania with wife, children and mother Melissa. Th e 1880 census from Wolf Creek, PA shows John McFarland (a56) and wif e Levina (a48) with s even children, farming there. His father (James ) place of birth is given as Ireland.
The 1882 History of Mercer co, Pennsylvania (*1) wrote a biography o f John A McFarlin, quoted here;
"JOHN A MCFARLIN, farmer, post-office Centretown, (in Wolf Creek, Merc er co) is a son of James and Melissa (Hard) McFarlin, natives of Irela nd. His grandfather, John, immigrated to America in 1797 with his wife , Margery, and six children. He wa s killed east of the Mountains, an d his widow with her children visited her brother at New Bedford, Penn ., for about one year, and then moved to Trumbull County, Ohio, wher e the father of our subject was reared and engaged in farming and dist i lling. His wife was a native of Vermont, and by her he had nine child ren, five of whom are still alive. He died in 1838 and his widow in 18 86. Their living children are: Mary, widow of William Breckenridge, li ving in Illinois: Louisa, Mrs. Dani el Jacobs, of Kansas; Sarah, Mrs. L eonard Hogg, of Illinois Robert W., of Illinois. and our subject, wh o was born in Trumbull County, Ohio. June 1823, and was educated at th e public schools.
"In 1852 he (John) went to California and engaged in gold mining for t hree years. In 1861 he purchased his present farm, where he has sinc e resided. In 1855 he married Lovina W., daughter of Isaac and Annie K . (Wick) Kimmell, of Ohio, and by th is union has seven children: Gran t W., of Worth Township, married to Mary, daughter of Henry and Jane H owe, of Worth Township, and has two children, Alice and Luella; Willia m J., of Springfield Township, married Mary Sopher, daughter of Joh n S opher, of this Township, and has two children, John L. and Lewis C . ; Elmer, of Kansas, married Belle Blakely, of Clyde, Kas. ; Lizzie , Lillian, Frank O., Annie M. and Louise Blanche.
"Our subject has held the offices of supervisor, school director and a ssessor of the township. He and family are members of the Methodist Ep iscopal Church of Fairview, of which he is class-leader and steward, a nd has been trustee."

The 1900 census from Wolf Creek, PA shows John A McFarlin (a77) and hi s wife Levina (Kimmel) (a68) now living alone there, beside his son Gr ant's farm. This 1900 census, along with the 1880 census, also gives t he place of birth for John's fathe r James to be in Ireland. These tw o data give further proof that John A's grandmother, Margery McFarli n came to America at least after 1796, since her son James' birthdat e appears to be 1795, and he was born in Ireland.

John Anderson McFarlin is reported to have died in Wolf Creek 1901. H e is buried in Union Home Cemetery in Wolf Creek.

LYSANDER J MCFARLAND (1835 to 1862)

Lysander J McFarland was born in Coitsville, Ohio about 1835 (census d ata) and in 1850 was living there with his brother John, sister Sara h and mother Melissa. They were next to his sister Mary (McFarland) an d William Brackenridge and their fam ily. Lysander appears to be helpin g with John's small home farm. Nearby, also in Coitsville, lived Laur a Bissell, daughter of Porter and Margaret.
Lysander and Laura were married in Mercer co, Illinois on June 2nd 186 0. However, they were listed in the July 1860 census of the town of Ta fton in Grant co Wisconsin, where he was a harness maker.
By 1862 Lysander had volunteered in the Union Army during the civil wa r. He was a private in Co K 7th Wisconsin Infantry, (mustered in on Se pt 21, 1861 with a total of 1106 men). His war record is unknown.
While Lysander was serving, Laura had moved to Illinois and gave birt h to their daughter Blanche in August of 1862. By December of 1862, Ly sander became ill with "Chronic Diarhear" and died Dec 19th 1862 in th e Carver General Hospital in Washin gton D.C. This was typical of man y Union soldiers at the time. He was buried in the nearby Soldiers Hom e National Cemetery (#3377).
In 1870, Laura was living in Viola, Mercer co, Illinois next to (a cou sin?) Abby M Hogg and Abby's two daughters. In 1880 she and Blanche ar e near to James (b 1806) and Mary Hogg , still in Viola.
In 1900, daughter Blanche, age 38, is unmarried and boarding in Fordyc e, Dallas co, Arkansas.

ROBERT WARNER MCFARLIN (1837 - 1917)

Robert Warner McFarlin's father, James McFarland, was born about 179
5 in (County Tyrone?) Ireland and came to Pennsylvania in 1796 at abou t age one with his parents, three older brothers and two older sisters . They were early Scots pioneers who arrived in Hopewell (New Bedford ) western Pennsylvania about 1799 a nd then to Coitsville, Ohio about 1 802.
Robert's parents, James and Melissa (Hard) McFarlin lived together i n Coitsville for about eighteen years after their marraige in 1819 o r 1820. They had seven children, while James was active in the busines s of distilling. Robert was born May , 1837 (*1 and 1900 census), likel y in Coitsville, Ohio.
His father James died in 1838 at age fifty three and his estate finish ed probate in June 1841. A John Stewart was appointed guardian to al l the children including; Sarah M McFarlin, age 8, Lysander J McFarlin , age 6 and "Robert W McFarlin, ag e 4" (*2). However in the 1850 Coits ville census Robert, age thirteen, was not listed with his mother an d her other children, nor could I find him in other censuses. Robert m ay have been in another household at the time because by 1860, he i s l ikely the Robert McFarland laborer age 23, who is found in the Viola , Illinois household of the farmer John Sample. Also in 1860, his futu re wife, Frances L Gillespie was living with her parents in nearby Ale do, Illinois.
The American Civil War came and Robert W McFarlin, age 24, joined th e Union Army as a private in Company H, 8th Reg't of the Kansas Infant ry. He was enrolled for three years on Aug 1st 1861 in Moline, Illinoi s and was mustered in Aug 8th 1861 i n Quincy, Illinois. He was in Frem ont's Cavalry Body Guard and Robert H Graham's Cavalry Co which was so on attached to the 14th Missouri Infantry (Union). Robert was, "Take n prisoner at Lexington, Sept 20th 1861, Released on taking oath Sep t 2 0th 1861" (*3). This was known as the 'First Battle of Lexingon' a s well as the 'Battle of the Hemp Bales' or the 'Seige of Lexington' , and lasted from Sept 13 to Sept 20th, 1861. Robert was apparently am ong the 3000 Union soldiers captured i n this Union loss. There was; "N o record subsequent to Sept 19th, 1861", perhaps because of his oath t aken for his release. He was mustered out Oct 16 1861 in St Louis Miss ouri. Later, Robert was granted 'Invalid Status', June 28th 1880, du e t o 'age'. He was then forty-three and apparently rec'd a pension fo r this.
Robert returned to the Rivoli, Illinois area and married Frances Gille spie in 1863. In 1870 their P.O. was New Windsor where they had thre e children. His mother Melissa, age sixty-seven was also living wit h them. By 1880 they had seven childre n including William Herschel ag e five. In 1900 Robert and Frances had been married thirty-six years a nd were still on their home farm with James, Myrtle, Ada and Sylvanu s still with them. They reported that ten of their twelve children wer e st ill living.
By 1910 Robert and Frances had moved to Long Beach, California with My rtle and Sylvanus. They owned their own home while living off their ow n income. He reported that he was a survivor of the Civil War. France s died in 1913 and Robert Warner Mc Farlin died in March of 1917 and wa s buried in Sunnyside Cemetery, Long Beach, California.

William Ivan McFarlin was born 2 Feb 1920 in New Windsor, Illinois, th
e sixth child of William and Elenor McFarlin.
He enlisted Dec 13 1941 as a private in the U.S. Army at Ft Sheridan , Illinois, six days after Pearl Harbor. He had completed four years o f high school and was single while working as a clerk. He was 5ft 10i n weighing 148 lbs.
William served in the Air Corps with the 3502 AAF BU reachng the ran k of staff sergeant. Awarded the Air Medal with 4 oak leaf cclusters a nd the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster.
It appears that William did not marry or have children. When he died i n 1949 at age 29, his mother Elenor signed the Military Headstone appl ication on March 7 1950, one year before she died. William was burie d in the Hopewell Cemetery in New Wi
ndsor, Illinois.
