It became necessary to MOVE graves that would be covered over by Lake Buchanan, beginning in 1931, TWO of the graves of young children of S.K. & M.L. were moved from the Old Bluffton Cem. to the New Bluffton Cem., located 8 or 9 miles west of Shaw Island, 3 miles west of present community of "New" Bluffton. Jennie is buried in an Unmarked Grave at the New Bluffton Cemetery, although cemetery records show she is buried in Lot 167 grave 2, and Mattie is buried in Lot 167 grave 1.

Records kept by the company hired to move these graves referred to the children as MATTIE and JENNIE, with Jennie listed as an infant. Persons NOTIFIED for permission to move the graves, their relationship and place of residence in 1931 were: R. J. McFarland of Burnet: W. A. of Cleburne; R. R. of Cleburn, listed as brothers, and an added note which said to notify Mrs. Hudson Hereford at Tow.

BURNET BULLETIN. The Burnet Bulletin, a weekly newspaper first published in January 1873, was edited until 1874 by George Whitaker. According to other sources, T. A. Stone may have founded and first edited the paper as the Burnet County Exponent, then sold it to Whitaker, who changed the name. Subsequent publishers included C. W. Miller, Charles M. Harris and Company (1875), Swift Ogle and Company (1876), S. L. McFarland and James Kibbee (1876), and James Kibbee (1877). C. W. Macune,qv Charles M. Harris, and Swift Ogle were successive editors. Ogle became editor and owner in 1878 but disappeared with some of the paper's funds in 1879, after which Capt. T. E. Hammond served as editor with financial assistance from Gen. Adam R. Johnson.qv James A. Stevens ran the paper from 1880 to 1898, when it was acquired by L. C. and Hardee (J. H.) Chamberlain, in whose family it remained until 1960. Ward Lowe, D. C. (Chester) Kincheloe, Lowell C. Welch, Ted C. Polk, and Mr. and Mrs. George Puckett of the Bluebonnet Publishing Company published the paper between 1961 and 1975. Another weekly paper known as the Bulletin and Bertram Enterprise was published briefly by Mr. and Mrs. Ted Polk and Mrs. Marvin Dodd in 1974. The weekly Burnet County Bulletin appeared from 1974 to 1987 and the Bulletin and Marble Falls Messenger after February of the latter year. Former Dallas newsman Tom Graham and associates purchased the paper in 1981 but sold it later that year to Mac B. McKinnon. In the 1990s the paper was published by Rick Espitia and had a circulation of 3,550.

    OBITUARY:

    BURNET BULLETIN, JULY 20,1944

    RUFUS JACKSON McFARLAND (1858-1944)

    A BURNET COUNTY PIONEER CALLED
    --------------------------------------------------------------
Rufus Jackson McFarland, a pioneer of Burnet County, was called by death at the Shepperd-Allen Hospital in Burnet July 12th, 1944, where he had been ill for several days. His funeral service was held July 13th in the Northington funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Robert H. James, Methodist pastor. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery of Burnet, with Bunk Gibbs, Eppie Debo, Frank Debo, M. McClure, Bud Moffitt and Vernon Greer as pallbearers.
Mr. McFarland is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Adam Cummins of Agua Dulce, Texas, Mrs. C.B. Raney of San Antonia, Mrs. W.G. Gibson of Manteca, California, Mrs. J.W. Copeland of Pettus, Texas, three sons, King McFarland of Burnet, C.C. McFarland of Houston, Rufus McFarland of San Antonia, and one brother R.R. McFarland of Cleburne. His wife preceded him in death many years ago.
Mr. McFarland was born April 9th 1858 in Burnet county, and lived in this section all his life. He was a law-abiding, honest man, and had many friends to regret his death. For the past several years Mr. McFarland had been totally blind, but he bore this affliction courageously and was always glad to have his old friends call and talk over old times with him. Upon the anniversary of his 86th birthday last April 9th, his children arranged a celebration for him at the Burnet Hotel, when many of his old friends called and paid their respects. Mr. McFarland greatly enjoyed the occasion, as did his children and the friends who dropped in for a few minutes chat.
Jack McFarland was indeed a pioneer of Burnet county, his parents being among its earlier settlers. Until he was twelve years of age, Indians raided this section of Texas regularly murdering the people and stealing horses. No doubt Mr. McFarland witnessed the effects of some of these depredations, and could relate many of the interesting early day episodes of the county. Not many men and women who were in Burnet county during Indian times are alive, and soon all of them will be gone, with only the memories of them left, which should be reverenced always.

    IN MEMORIAM

    JAMES DORR MCFARLAND, SR.

James Dorr McFarland, Sr. was born in Burnet, Texas, on February 7, 1903, the son of Robert Ray and Mary Debo MacFarland. He grew up in Cleburne, Texas, where he graduated from high school in the spring of 1921. He entered the University of Texas at Austin in September, 1921, to study electrical engineering. During this era as a student, he roomed with Byron Short, a future UT engineering faculty member and the brother of Phyllis Short, who later became Dorr McFarland's wife.

Upon graduation with a BSEE in June 1926, McFarland took a job with General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York. At that time this job offer was extended only to the top of the graduating class. His job at GE involved testing of large motors and turbines. He returned to Texas in the spring of 1928 to interview in GE's Dallas office. Fortuitously, on a return visit to his former professors at UT, he was offered a teaching position by Professor C. E. Rowe, who at that time was chairman of the Department of Drawing. He began as an instructor of drawing at UT on April 1, 1928, starting with a salary of $200 per month. McFarland, along with Rowe and W. H. McNiel, were the first three faculty members in the Department of Drawing.

In June 1930, McFarland married Phyllis Short, and they had two sons, James and Sam. McFarland was preceded in death by Sam, in 1989. In 1939, McFarland built a house on East 38 1/2 Street, where he and his wife lived until his death. In the 1930s, McFarland worked during summer months as a draftsman for the Texas Highway Department.

McFarland was co-author, along with C. E. Rowe, of the popular textbook Engineering Descriptive Geometry, which was published by D. Van Nostrand Company in 1939 and again in 1953. At one time, the textbook was used by 85 colleges in the United States and Latin America. During this era, McFarland taught courses in engineering drawing, drafting, and descriptive geometry. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1937, to associate professor in 1943, and to professor in 1950. He became registered as a Professional Engineer and made Who's Who in Engineering. He also found time to complete his master's degree in electrical engineering at UT during this tim

McFarland was a trustee of the UT Engineers' Loan Fund for thirty-two years, and served as chairman for seven years. He took special pride in helping students who were in financial need to continue with their engineering studies. Each student who applied was given serious consideration for a loan through a personal interview, where a full inventory of the student's needs and accomplishments was assessed. Then, a loan of $200 was considered large.

Dorr was usually a serious professor, but he had a wry sense of humor appreciated by others. Students affectionately gave him the nickname of "Smiling Jack" from the Dick Tracy cartoon series. It is estimated that, during his long tenure at UT, McFarland formally taught over 10,000 student

In 1951, he became chairman of the Department of Drawing and remained in that position for seventeen years, until his retirement in May 1968. At that time, the engineering drawing department was merged with the mechanical engineering department, and it is now the area of computer graphics and engineering. McFarland achieved the status of professor emeritus in 1969, and he stayed loyal to the University throughout his remaining years.

Dorr McFarland enjoyed hunting and fishing, and befriended many students who would accompany him on his outdoor trips. He took special pride in his house on Lake Travis, where he spent much of his spare time. He was quite proficient in many outdoor activities, and no fisherman could catch white bass as he could, due to his tedious study of their habits. Hunting season brought another source of pleasure, with the deer and turkey in the hill country around Medina, Texas, being a favorite target. At the request of his wife, Dorr encapsulated many of his favorite outdoor hunting and fishing experiences in a booklet titled Long and Short Tales, which he self-published in 1983.

McFarland was active in the Wilshire Presbyterian Church for forty-eight years, and achieved a 70-year Certificate from the University Masonic Lodge. At age 95, James Dorr McFarland, Sr. passed away peacefully on Monday, January 16, 1999.

    Notes:

Apparently when Lula was giving birth to Nolan she was with " Aunt Bessie" during the birth. Traditionally the person in attendance at the time of childbirth becomes the "namesake" of that child. By Bessie being a female, Nolan was given the middle initial "B" in recognition of her presence at his birth.
(Could this be the Bessie McCoy Ligon who married William McFarland?)

    Nolan B. Frazier
    Aug. 4, 1905 - Aug. 16, 2001

Nolan B. Frazier, 96, of Albany, died Wednesday at Villa Cascade Care Center in Lebanon.

Born in Burnett, Texas, Mr. Frazier was the son of John and Lula (McFarland) Frazier. He married Zeda Ruth Nelson on Nov. 19, 1927, in Odam, Teexas. His wife died Dec. 16, 1986.

Mr. Frazier was a cattleman and rancher most of his life and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by daughter Barbara Bigler of Albany; son John of California; sisters Ellain O'Lera of Bend and Doris Stowers of Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Five brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

    NOLAN B. FRAZIER

Nolan B. Frazier was born August 4, 1905 in Burnet Co; Texas. He is the second of 12 children. His parents were Lula McFarland Frazier and John Ira Frazier. His mother died in 1939, his father died in 1955.

Nolan was to leave home at a very early age. He completed the fourth grade in school before being hired out as a hand on a neighboring ranch. He was to travel far and wide into Mexico and many Texas towns. He was employed as a telephone lineman putting telephones into Mexico. He learned to speak spanish fluently and acquired a taste for the hot and spicy food of the region.

Horses and cattle were the love of his life and he worked as a ranch hand many times during his working years. Over the years he was a jack-of-all-trades and he learned to be a master of most of them. He always thought the grass was greener some place besides where he was! He was a rugged individual who always managed to get what he wanted, when he wanted it. He is a very opinionated man and doesn't think anyone else has the right to be the same! He was always the boss in his home and expected his wife and children to obey his commands - or else!

He married Zeda Ruth Nelson in november 1927. He has two children, john William and Barbra Jean, seven grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. His wife died in December of 1986. He is still living and will be 92 years old on August 4, 1997.

His two youngest sisters are still living.
