In 1800 a William Cane is living in Morgan, Buncombe Co., the same area as the McFarlands. In 1810 in Haywood, a Robert Cain and a William Cain are present, both with wives between 16 and 25. In 1820, they are gone.

Need to look for them in Missouri.
