It is not known who the parents of Sally (Sarah) and Ruth Buchanan Jack are. The only hint is the presence of a Samuel Jack who is buying and selling property in the area around the French Broad and the Nolachucky Rivers.

A Samuel Jack was present in Greene County TN during the late 1700s and was a neighbor of John McFarland. They appear together in various records. He was present as late as 1799, where he is selling property along the Nolachucky River.

Sally Jack could very well be the Sarah McFarland in the 1830 census in Lafayette Co. MO. She is shown as 50 to 60 years old. She is living with two women 20 to 30, and one male ten to 15, and another 20-30 (that would be John W.).

Many Ancestry trees show this George McFarland, son of George and Sally Jack McF. as the one who married Elizabeth Maddox, March 16, 1812 in Greene Co. TN. If so, then she must have died and he remarried Abigail Cathey in 1816 in Howard Co. MO. This George Jr. should not be confused with the George Jr. of Knox Co. KY.

Logic dictates that there are two different George McFarland families: the one who moved to Missouri, and the one that moved to Kentucky.

According to research done in the Cathey family, this George married Abigail Cathey, daugher of George Cathey and Margaret Chamberlain, some time after the move to Missouri. The marriage took place Dec. 19, 1816 in Howard Co. MO. It was recorded as George Mcfarlin and Abigal Carthey.

In 1830 census: what appears to be this George McFarland is in Lafayette Co. with no spouse, so she must have died before that. The 1830 census shows 1 male under 5, 1 male 5 to 9, 1 male 30 to 39 (George), 1 female 5 to 9, 1 female 10 to 14. (There is no female under 5, so where is Sarah A.?)

In 1840 census, George (age 40-50) is in Lafayette Co. p. 156, along with brother Samuel. There are two males: one 10-15 (Robert), one 15-20 (Samuel A.), one female 20-30. (Still no Sarah)

George purchases two 40 acre properties in Johnson Co. in 1843 and 1848.

540 HISTORY OF JOHNSON COUNTY. "George McFarland was born in Tennessee in 1793, and died in Chilhowee township, Johnson county, in 1862. Samuel McFarland, Sr., was a native of Tennessee, and came, with all his father's family, to Missouri territory in 1816, and settled in Cooper county, near Otterville; then in about four years thereafter removed to the Sni-a-bar creek, in Lafayette county. He came with his family to Centerview township in 1843, and settled about two miles east of the present depot at Centerview. p. 538 "It is related that Father McFarland, his sons and sons of his neighbors, every fall engaged in a great hunt for the purpose of getting a supply of meat for the coming winter. Being a strictly religious man, wherever in the forest the camp was pitched there he also erected an altar to the worship of Almighty God, and every morning before the chase, and every evening at the camp fire, there in nature's solemn temple was heard the reverent tones of Father McFarland ascending to high heaven from among the dark trees of the forest, while the bowed head of each comrade betokened the conscientious though strong spirit of those hardy men."

By 1850 census, George is living with his son Robert in Johnson Co. MO and does not show a spouse.

This George was living in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Post Oak Twn. in Johnson Co. with what appears to be his son, Robert McFarland, born in 1837, married to an Elizabeth, born in 1836 in KY, with their children Arabella, born in 1849, then John P. 1852, Samuel B. 1856.

1860 census is fam. 1644, Johnson Co., Post Oak twn. p. 23.

In this same census, the households include fam. 1644, Robert with father George. fam. 1645, Milly Ann McFarland (widowed wife of Samuel A. McFarland), and fam. 1646 James G. Morrow, 48, merchant from Tennessee, whom I assume is a relation of Jane Morrow, wife of the Samuel McFarland who moved to Texas.

The George McFarland of Johnson County MO died April 23, 1863 and is buried at the Sluder Cemetery in Centerview Twnship Johnson County, MO. He is buried with a S.A. who died in 1859 age 35 years. This could be a son named Samuel who was present in the 1850 census, age 27, married to Milly from KY, but is absent in the 1860 census.

If, in fact, this George McFarland, is the son of George and Sally Jack McFarland, and he married Elizabeth Maddox on March 16, 1812 in Greene County TN, then it is more proof that the George who married Nancy Golden in Knox County TN is a different George.

The George McFarland of Johnson County TN died April 23, 1863 and is buried at the Sluder Cemetery in Centerview Twnship Johnson County, MO. He is buried with a S.A. who died in 1859 age 35 years. This could be a son named Samuel who was present in the 1850 census, age 27, married to Milly from KY, but is absent in the 1860 census.

There are no Cocke Co. TN records from this time period since the courthouse burned twice. However, on his tombstone, which reads "In Memory of...." it states he was born there. Not sure who erected the tombstone, or how old it is, however, it is among the very oldest in this cemetery.

Lafayette County, Missouri 1830 census, p. 258 has Samuel McFarland, bet. 20 and 30, next to George McFarland, bet. 30 and 40, and near Sarah McFarland, bet. 50 and 60. In Samuel's household is one male under 5, one female under 5, and one female bet. 5 and 10, as well as wife bet/ 20 and 30. A Robert Morrow family is on the same page.

Lafayette County, Missouri 1840 census has Samuel McFarland, bet. 40 and 50, George, bet. 40 and 50, and John bet. 30 and 40. Samuel has living with him four boys and four girls. They are living in the Clay township. Image 17/40.

1843 they move to Johnson County.

Bef. 1850, the family moved to Texas, witness the census record below.

Samuel McFarland received a Mil. 3rd class Patent on Dec. 15, 1856 in Burnet Co. for 297 acres. That means he was living there for at least 3 years before the patent. Patent #780.

Samuel and Jane McFarland are buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, near Bertram, TX. This must be near the land grant.

To get there: Take Hwy. 29 east from Burnet, turn south on FM 303 before Bertram. When 303 runs into #243, turn west (right) at #330, follow signs to Mt. Zion, which is up a small road that runs north from #330. It crosses the South San Gabriel river at a shallow spot. It is a well-maintained cemetery, that was once named for the Jennings family (Samuel's neighbor) who donated the land. Samuel W. McFarland, his probable grandson, who died in 1758, is among the very first burials.

The notes below and the information of Samuel Arthur McFarland's descendants in Texas is the work of Donell Frazier and comes from her work and website. The connection to George and Sally Jack is still unproven speculation, but based on likely connections. We need a Y-DNA test from a male McFarland descendant to confirm this relationship.

SAMUEL McFARLAND

Samuel McFarland, the original settler of that family to arrive in Burnet County, was born in 1800 in
Cocke County, Tennessee, died March 11, 1861, in Burnet County, Texas, and was buried in the Mt.
Zion Cemetery near Bertram. The names of his parents are unknown since the records of Cocke County,
Tennessee, were destroyed in 1897 when a fIre engulfed the courthouse there.
McFarland was married September 15, 1824, at New Lebanon in Cooper County, Missouri, to Jane
Pricilla Morrow, who was born in October 1805 in Madison County, Tennessee, died November 8, 1879
in Burnet County, Texas, and was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery .She was the daughter of James Gillis
and Mary Davis Morrow. James Gillis Morrow was born c. 1774 aboard ship in the Atlantic Ocean, and died sometime after 1805. He was married before 1797 to Mary Davis in South Carolina, and they lived in Clarksville, Tennessee.
The McFarlands were of Scotch descent, and are derived from the McFarlane clan whose residence was near famed Loch Lomond in Scotland. Family tradition says that the first McFarland in this country from which the family is descended was born aboard ship while crossing the Atlantic Ocean to America, and was born on the day that the "mid-way bottle" was drunk. The McFarlands landed in South Carolina and then moved westward into eastern Tennessee.
The tradition continues in the family that Samuel was a friend of Sam Houston in Tennessee, and that
they visited the Indian Reservation together. When Houston was Governor of Texas he visited often in
the McFarland's home.
The McFarland name was originally spelled Macfarlane or Mcfarlane. By the time members of the family had reached Missouri it was changed to Mcfarland, and by the time the family arrived in Texas they were all spelling it Mcfarland. By 1900 most of the family were spelling the name McFarland.
An 1881 History of Johnson County, Missouri, reveals that Samuel McFarland came with all his father's family to Missouri in 1816, settling in Cooper Counry near Otterville. In four years they went to Sin-a-bar Creek in Lafayette County Missouri, and Samuel came with his family to Centerview in 1843, settling about two miles east of the depot at Center view. There 400 acres were purchased and the family resided upon the property until 1850 when they moved to Texas.
Another family tradition states the Mcfarlands fought in the Black Hawk Indian War in 1831, and before
coming to Missouri had also fought in the Revolutionary War at King's Mountain. In later years several of the Mcfarlands also served in the War Between the States.
Samuel McFarland and family came to Texas around 1849 and were in Williamson County at the time of the 1850 Census. He took up land in Burnet County around 1852. On May 19, 1856, two of his neighbors, .John Jennings and Samuel M. Bingham, swore before the Burnet County Clerk that McFarland had been living on his land and cultivating it for the past three years. On December 15, 1856, Governor E. M. Pease granted him 297 acres situated about six miles south and east from Burnet (in the Mt. Zion neighborhood).
After Samuel's death, all but 40 acres of the land was sold on August 22, 1863, and the family, Jane and sons George Jackson, James Gillis, Samuel King, and Francis Marion, moved to Cow Creek farther south in the county , taking their possessions with them. However, the Indian depredations and raids became so severe that they soon left possessions and cattle behind and fled to the safety of Burnet.

It became necessary to MOVE graves that would be covered over by Lake Buchanan, beginning in 1931, TWO of the graves of young children of S.K. & M.L. were moved from the Old Bluffton Cem. to the New Bluffton Cem., located 8 or 9 miles west of Shaw Island, 3 miles west of present community of "New" Bluffton. Jennie is buried in an Unmarked Grave at the New Bluffton Cemetery, although cemetery records show she is buried in Lot 167 grave 2, and Mattie is buried in Lot 167 grave 1.

Records kept by the company hired to move these graves referred to the children as MATTIE and JENNIE, with Jennie listed as an infant. Persons NOTIFIED for permission to move the graves, their relationship and place of residence in 1931 were: R. J. McFarland of Burnet: W. A. of Cleburne; R. R. of Cleburn, listed as brothers, and an added note which said to notify Mrs. Hudson Hereford at Tow.

BURNET BULLETIN. The Burnet Bulletin, a weekly newspaper first published in January 1873, was edited until 1874 by George Whitaker. According to other sources, T. A. Stone may have founded and first edited the paper as the Burnet County Exponent, then sold it to Whitaker, who changed the name. Subsequent publishers included C. W. Miller, Charles M. Harris and Company (1875), Swift Ogle and Company (1876), S. L. McFarland and James Kibbee (1876), and James Kibbee (1877). C. W. Macune,qv Charles M. Harris, and Swift Ogle were successive editors. Ogle became editor and owner in 1878 but disappeared with some of the paper's funds in 1879, after which Capt. T. E. Hammond served as editor with financial assistance from Gen. Adam R. Johnson.qv James A. Stevens ran the paper from 1880 to 1898, when it was acquired by L. C. and Hardee (J. H.) Chamberlain, in whose family it remained until 1960. Ward Lowe, D. C. (Chester) Kincheloe, Lowell C. Welch, Ted C. Polk, and Mr. and Mrs. George Puckett of the Bluebonnet Publishing Company published the paper between 1961 and 1975. Another weekly paper known as the Bulletin and Bertram Enterprise was published briefly by Mr. and Mrs. Ted Polk and Mrs. Marvin Dodd in 1974. The weekly Burnet County Bulletin appeared from 1974 to 1987 and the Bulletin and Marble Falls Messenger after February of the latter year. Former Dallas newsman Tom Graham and associates purchased the paper in 1981 but sold it later that year to Mac B. McKinnon. In the 1990s the paper was published by Rick Espitia and had a circulation of 3,550.

Ogle became editor and owner in 1878 but disappeared with some of the paper's funds in 1879, after which Capt. T. E. Hammond served as editor with financial assistance from Gen. Adam R. Johnson.qv James A. Stevens ran the paper from 1880 to 1898, when it was acquired by L. C. and Hardee (J. H.) Chamberlain, in whose family it remained until 1960. Ward Lowe, D. C. (Chester) Kincheloe, Lowell C. Welch, Ted C. Polk, and Mr. and Mrs. George Puckett of the Bluebonnet Publishing Company published the paper between 1961 and 1975. Another weekly paper known as the Bulletin and Bertram Enterprise was published briefly by Mr. and Mrs. Ted Polk and Mrs. Marvin Dodd in 1974. The weekly Burnet County Bulletin appeared from 1974 to 1987 and the Bulletin and Marble Falls Messenger after February of the latter year. Former Dallas newsman Tom Graham and associates purchased the paper in 1981 but sold it later that year to Mac B. McKinnon. In the 1990s the paper was published by Rick Espitia and had a circulation of 3,550.

RUFUS JACKSON McFARLAND (1858-1944)

A BURNET COUNTY PIONEER CALLED

Rufus Jackson McFarland, a pioneer of Burnet County, was called by death at the Shepperd-Allen Hospital in Burnet July 12th, 1944, where he had been ill for several days. His funeral service was held July 13th in the Northington funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Robert H. James, Methodist pastor. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery of Burnet, with Bunk Gibbs, Eppie Debo, Frank Debo, M. McClure, Bud Moffitt and Vernon Greer as pallbearers.
Mr. McFarland is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Adam Cummins of Agua Dulce, Texas, Mrs. C.B. Raney of San Antonia, Mrs. W.G. Gibson of Manteca, California, Mrs. J.W. Copeland of Pettus, Texas, three sons, King McFarland of Burnet, C.C. McFarland of Houston, Rufus McFarland of San Antonia, and one brother R.R. McFarland of Cleburne. His wife preceded him in death many years ago.
Mr. McFarland was born April 9th 1858 in Burnet county, and lived in this section all his life. He was a law-abiding, honest man, and had many friends to regret his death. For the past several years Mr. McFarland had been totally blind, but he bore this affliction courageously and was always glad to have his old friends call and talk over old times with him. Upon the anniversary of his 86th birthday last April 9th, his children arranged a celebration for him at the Burnet Hotel, when many of his old friends called and paid their respects. Mr. McFarland greatly enjoyed the occasion, as did his children and the friends who dropped in for a few minutes chat.
Jack McFarland was indeed a pioneer of Burnet county, his parents being among its earlier settlers. Until he was twelve years of age, Indians raided this section of Texas regularly murdering the people and stealing horses. No doubt Mr. McFarland witnessed the effects of some of these depredations, and could relate many of the interesting early day episodes of the county. Not many men and women who were in Burnet county during Indian times are alive, and soon all of them will be gone, with only the memories of them left, which should be reverenced always.
