  1. 1.  Jacob McFarland was born on 21 Feb 1772 in Virginia; died in 1843 in Cooper Co., Missouri; was buried in Reid Cemetery (also called McFarland Cemetery).

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Birth: 21 Feb 1772, Fincastle, Montgomery, Virginia, USA
    • Residence: 1810, Haywood, North Carolina, United States
    • Residence: 1830, Cooper, Missouri, USA
    • Residence: 1840, Cooper, Missouri, USA
    • Death: 13 Oct 1846, Booneville, Cooper, Missouri, USA

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:
Jacob McFarland's first marriage would have taken place in Tennesee in Greene/Jefferson County. Jefferson County was created in 1782 and its marriage records start in 1798. I assume his first, and or second wife died and he then married Nancy Cathey in 1804 when he purchased land from George Cathey. The McFarlands did not move to Buncombe County before 1799.

Regarding the children: the son George W. McFarland born Oct. 18, 1809 may be incorrect, or he has become mixed up with George W. McFarland, born Jan. 25, 1809, son of James Ray McFarland.

Also, the marriage to Elizabeth Webb, and then the marriage to Nancy Cathey...yet there are children born before that marriage.

    Buncombe County Deed Records:
On April 20, 1804 Jacob McFarland purchases 65 acres on the east side of the Pigeon River from George Cathey. Vol. 8, p. 271. Haywood Co. is created out of Buncombe Co. in 1808.

Haywood Co. NC, County Court Pleas, Vol. C, p. 11, in June 15, 1812, Jacob McFarland was foreman of the Grand Jury, James McFarland served, and John McFarland, Esq. was a Justice. Dec. 1814, Jacob and James McFarland serving as grand jurors (p. 90). March session, 1815, Jacob is serving again, John McFarland Esq. is Justice.( p. 103)

    Haywood County N.C. Deed Records:
Book A, p. 363. On Sept. 19, 1815, Jacob McFarland sold to Daniel McDowell 67 acres on the east side of the Pigeon River, where he lives, for $700. The land intersects the said McFarland spring branch. George Cathey witnessed. This must have been shortly before the move to Missouri. (Daniel McDowell is the son of James McDowell, therefore a brother to Margaret McDowell who married David McFarland, Jacob's brother.)

On the gate is the name "McFarland". The farm is now owned by Henry Grathwohl. There are no visible tombstones inside this enclosure but on the outside was found one foot marker with the initials, J. It is our thinking that this is a marker for the grave of John S. or Jessie McFarland who had come to Cooper County between 1815 and 1820 after William McFarland, the first sheriff of Cooper County, who resided on the Byler farm now owned by Larry Lymer of the Rankin Mill Community. Other markers scattered around over an area of some fifty by seventy five feet were found that had not been broken beyond reading and these were:

    BIOGRAPHICAL
1883 History of Howard and Cooper Counties
    CLARK'S FORK TOWNSHIP

ARCHIMEDES W. McFARLAND. Mr. McFarland is a cousin of Truman W. McFarland, of Boonville in whose sketch is given an account of their grandparents, Jacob, Sr., and Nancy (Cathy) McFarland, originally of North Carolina. Archimedes W.'s father, Jacob, Jr., was born before his parents left their native state, but attained his majority here, and in 1833 was married to Miss Matilda Fleming, formerly of Kentucky. He died, however, about three years after his marriage, leaving his wife a widow with two children: Archimedes W., the subject of this sketch, born in Boonville township, September 15, 1834, and Armiuda, J., born in 1835, now the wife of Robert Comer, of Henry county, Missouri. Eight years after her husband's death, Mrs. McFarland also died, and thus the two children were left orphans in childhood. However, they were kindly cared for by relatives and friends, and their father having died possessed of some property, they were not entirely dependent upon the generosity of others in their tender years. After Archimedes grew up he sold his interest in his father's estate, and bought a farm in Henry, where he followed farming until 1865. He then sold out his farm in that county and returned to the home of his childhood days, where he bought a tract of land adjacent to the farm that his father-in-law, Mr. William Hurt, had given him in Clark's Fork township. He now has a good farm, and is one of the well respected farmers and good citizens of the township. December 10, 1857, he was married to Miss Mary Hurt, of this county. They have three children, two being dead: Alice G., born December 7, 1858, wife of Robert Johnson; William J., born September 9, 1863, and Agnes L., born December 5, 1877. Laura C. and Lillie M. are deceased. Mr. McFarland's farm contains about a quarter section of good land, and he follows both grain and stock raising.

History of Cooper County Missouri by W. F. Johnson

    A. W. McFarland

    (Transcribed by Jim Thoma)

    A. W. McFarland - The story of the struggles and accomplishments of the pioneer men and women of any section of the country, is one of ever increasing interest. The true history of Cooper County consists, in a large measure, in the recital of the lives and deeds of the pioneers, whose sacrifices made possible the better conditions which those of a later generation enjoy. A. W. McFarland, who died Jan. 9, 1910, while a native of Cooper County saw much of the early life and early day development of this county. He belonged to a family of pioneers. He was born in Boonville township in 1834, a son of Jacob and Matilda (Fleming) McFarland, who were among the very early settlers of this county. Jacob McFarland died in 1843, and his wife departed this life three years later, and their remains now rest in a private cemetery on their old home farm.
    A. W. McFarland was reared to manhood in Cooper County, and educated in the district schools, or such schools as existed at that time. He was married Dec. 10, 1857, to Miss Mary Catherine Hurt. They resided in Cooper County for about three years after their marriage, when they removed to Henry County, and remained there three years. They then returned to Cooper County and settled on the farm where Mrs. McFarland

now lives. Here A. W. McFarland engaged in farming and stock raising, and was regarded as a successful man of affairs, and a good citizen. He improved his place and made a pleasant home for himself and his family. It is one of the attractive places in that section of the county, and the cedar trees which were set out over a half century ago still ornament the front yard of the residence, and give the place an artistic and distinctive appearance.
Mary Catherine (Hurt) McFarland is also a native of Cooper County, and belongs to a family of pioneers. She was born in Clarks Fork township, Sept. 2, 1838, a daughter of William and Catherine (Robertson) Hurt. William Hurt was born in Cooper County, of Virginia parents, who were among the first settlers of this section. He died in 1895. His wife, who was also born in this county died in 1881. Their remains are interred in Walnut Grove Cemetery. William and Catherine (Robertson) Hurt were the parents of the following children: Mrs. Nancy M. Davis, deceased; Mary Catherine, widow of A. W. McFarland, the subject of this sketch; Jenkin B., deceased; Benijoh, deceased; William, resides in Clarks Fork township; and James, resides in Clarks Fork township.
To A. W. and Mary Catherine (Hurt) McFarland were born the following children: Alice, married Robert Johnston, who is now deceased, and she lives in Boonville; Laura Catherine, deceased; William J., resides on the old home place; Lillie May, deceased; and Agnes Lee, married Terrell Mills, and they reside on the McFarland homestead.
Terrell Mills and Agnes Lee McFarland were married Oct. 11, 1899. Mr. Mills was born in Clarks Fork township, Feb. 20, 1878. He is a son of James T. and Bettie Elizabeth Mills. The father is now deceased and the mother resides in Kansas City, Mo. To Terrell and Agnes Lee (McFarland) Mills has been born one child, Mary Elizabeth, born Jan.18,1905.
There were nine grandchildren in the McFarland family, as follows: Emmett B. Johnston; Mrs. Berna Swarne; Mrs. Ruth Swarner; Percy E. McFarland, deceased; Mrs. Eula Mercer; Wilbur J. McFarland; Mary Martha McFarland; Alice Grace McFarland; and Mary Elizabeth Mills. The following are great-grandchildren of Mrs. McFarland: Burnah Mildred Lucile, Edward, and Mildred Swarner, and Roberta, Bernard, and Mary Edwina Johnston.
The McFarland family have been prominently identified with Cooper County almost since its beginning, and are one of the highly respected pioneer families of this section. Mrs. McFarland, although in her 81st year, has a keen insight into the affairs of every-day life and a remarkable memory, rich in reminiscence of Cooper County history.

Albert W. McFarland, a prominent farmer and stockman of Big Creek township, is a member of one of the pioneer families of Henry County, whose residence in Missouri dates back to territorial date. Albert W. McFarland was born in Henry County, six miles southeast of where Blairstown now stands February 4, 1878. He is a son of William J. and Mary E. (Mitchell) McFarland. William J. McFarland was born in Moniteau County, Missouri, September 26, 1834, and died December 21, 1893. His wife, Mary E. (Mitchell) McFarland, was born in Cooper County, Missouri, December 25, 1843, and died May 12, 1913. William J. McFarland was a soldier in the Confederate army, serving under Gen. Sterling Price. He came to Henry County in the fall of 1867 and settled in Big Creek township, where he first purchased 160 acres of land and became one of the successful farmers of Henry County. At the time of his death he was the owner of about 600 acres. William J. McFarland was a son of Jesse McFarland, who came to Missouri in 1809, and was here during the time of the disastrous earthquake in 1811. Jesse McFarland was a son of Jacob McFarland, who was a member of the first territorial legislature of Missouri. He died in Moniteau County. Jesse McFarland was the first sheriff of Cooper County, Missouri. He also was the first Government surveyor of what later became Rives County, receiving his appointment in 1821, when he was twenty-one years of age. He died at Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Albert W. McFarland received his education in the public schools of Henry County and the State Normal School at Warrensburg, Missouri. Later he attended the Gem City Business College at Quincy, Illinois, where he was graduated in the class of 1906. He then returned to Henry County, where he has since been successfully engaged in general farming and stock raising, and is recognized as one of the leading agriculturists of Henry County. His farm consists of 300 acres of valuable farm land, which is well improved. Mr. McFarland was united in marriage July 24, 1901, with Miss Hattie Woodruff, a daughter of R. B. and Rosa (Young) Woodruff, pioneers of Johnson County, Missouri. The Woodruff family came to Henry County forty-five years ago and now reside in Big Creek township. Mrs. McFarland has two brothers: John D. and Edgar, both residing at home with their parents. To Mr. and Mrs. McFarland have been born eight children, as follow: Augusta L., Inga, Courtney L., Ruth V., Mattie M., William J., Olive M. and Douglass W. Mr. McFarland takes an active interest in public affairs and is one of the progressive and capable citizens of Big Creek township. He has held local office at various times and was president of the first high school board of the consolidated district, and is a member of that board now. He is also president of the township board.

Albert married Hattie Belle Woodruff on 24 Jul 1901 in Henry, Missouri, USA. Hattie was born on 15 Nov 1876 in Missouri; died on 28 Jan 1967 in Marceline, Linn County, Missouri, United States of America; was buried in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri, United States of America.
