Augusta Co. VA

There are three documents for a Robert McFarland in Augusta County during the Revolutionary War period. They could be for this Robert McFarland, or they could be referring to the Robert McFarland, born abt. 1725, supposed son of Duncan. It makes more sense, because of age, for it to be this one.

First: in 1775 Robert McFarland was paid for his service during the Dunmore Expedition time period. He was paid for 13 days as a scout, and also for 25 days hired...it seems to read something about horses. This is from p. 23 of Dunmore's Expedition: Payrolls and Public Service Claims 1775, pub. 1930, Library of Virginia. Also, on p. 105, Robert McFarland is paid for 112 days duty with Capt. John Lewis' company, on the same payroll as Alexander McFarland.

A Robert McFarland also appears in Staunton court in October, 1776 where he is called as a witness against Alexander Miller, a Rev. who has refused to be disloyal to the King. Robert is also being paid for travel accompanying said Miller, and the distance he travels to Staunton indicates he is coming from Duncan's area near Warm Springs, not Reed Creek area. "To Robt. McFarland, summoned by the officer; to assist, for going 50
miles, at 4 pence per mile. To the witnesses for attending one day each, 25
pounds of tobacco, or two shillings and one penny, viz: William Ewing,
Silas Hart, Mary Erwin, James Montgomery, William Givens, Robert McFarland,
Thomas Smith, and James Hill."

William Givens is a neighbor to Duncan.

1777: Nov. Muster Roll of Cap. Joseph Crockett Co. of the 7th Regiment by Col. Alex McClenachan (from Augusta Co.). Robert McFarlane is listed, says enlisted for 3 years. On furlough in Nov. 1777. In this company is Robert Sayers as 1st Lt. There is a Richard Scaggs. The rest of the names are not familiar.

Included in this list is Joseph McFarlan, with Robert McFarlan next to him. They are near Samuel Vanhook, James Shewmaker, William Price. Then further down the list is Alexander McFarland. Other lists that show everone's signature also has a Robert McFarland Jr. listed. Not sure who this Joseph McFarlan is. The Joseph McFarland of the Duncan line that is known, is the son of Robert Henry and was born in 1775, therefore too young to sign a petition, one would think. However, there may be children of Robert from Augusta Co. Warm Springs area that are not known or are mixed up with the other Robert line.

The Alexander McFarland who fought at Pt. Pleasant in 1774 and on the Nolachucky in 1776, was born in 1750 according to his pension records which I have read and transcribed.

He received his pension of 10 pounds a year from Augusta Co. from 1788 to 1797, then from Russell Co. 1798 to Sept. 1804.

It is unknown if this Alexander, wounded and needing a pension from 1788 to 1804, is the same Alexander who purchased 400 acres in Greene Co. TN in 1783.

Other records say that Alexander McFarland is the father of Robert Henry McFarland, who was born around 1740-50 time frame. This would mean an older Alexander than the one who received the pension.

An Alexander McFarland was also in VA when he signed a petition in 1785 to form Russell Co. from Washington Co. VA. This is assumed to be Alexander McFarland, who married Lydia Priest in that year. This should be Alexander McFarland, son of William McFarland. According to the Personal Property lists in Russell County, there was an Alexander present from 1787 through the 1790. There was also an Alexander who signed the petition to form Russell County.

Then there is no Alexander in Russell Co. until 1796 when the Alexander of Greene Co. TN sells his property there and moves to Russell Co. So the earlier Alexander appears to be the son of William and Elizabeth Gibson. He moves to KY where he appears in 1791. His brothers Daniel and John also move there. There is very briefly, a James and a Robert. Not sure who they are. However the Robert appears married to a Catherine and gives permission for his daughter Anne (Catherine) to marry Robert Young. Alexander McFarland signs the bond.

Judging from the 1797, 98, 99, and then the 1802 listing of Alexander McFarland Sr. and Alexander McFarland Jr., I believe he has a son named Alexander, who is the man who married Mary Crawford in 1802. They are not present in 1810, nor are they in Tennessee, so this would be consistent with the move to Alabama.

In 1818 Joseph McFarlane signs an affidavit fo the pension application of Anjer Price in Warren Co. TN.

He was living in Jackson Co. Alabama in the 1830 and 1840 census, therefore it seems likely that if he died in 1840, he would have died there.

In 1830 census he is living next to Meredith Price.

On same page is Wm. W McFarland, age 30 to 40. On next page is Alexander McFarland, age 40 to 50. Why isn't this Alexander listed as a son? In the 1850 census Alexander, 56, born in KY, is married to Susan. He has a son named Washington, 22 AL, and another son more than likely, named William 28 AL living next door.

In an 1848 lawsuit between the heirs of Robert and Isabella McFarland Crawford, it lists the heirs: Col. William M. Crawford, Mary Crawford McFarland, who is deceased and it is believed that her husband is alive in Alabama, and others.

Alabama records:

In 1816 an Alexander Mc Farlane is in the tax list for the Mississippi Territory of Monroe Co. Alabama. Monroe county was established in 1815 and is in the southern part of the state. I don't believe this is the same Alexander as the one in Madison Co.

Madison Co. AL was created in 1808.
Jackson Co. was established in 1819 from Madison Co.

In 1815 and 1816, Alexander MFarlin is on the Madison Co. AL tax lists and the Monroe Co. tax list in 1815. Don't know if this indicates two individuals, or one man owing two properties.

In 1830 there is a Joseph Mcfortin in Jackson AL census who is 50 to 60. p. 34. There is a Robert Mcfortin also on page 29, age 40-50. On that same page is William Price and Daniel Price. Where is Alexander?

What if this Alexander was the son of Alexander McFarlane, son of William of Wolf Creek. That Alexander moved to Kentucky, Cumberland Co. in 1795 where he is recorded as being Maj. Alexander McFarlane on Indian Creek. then he moved to New Madrid MO, and died in 1812 in Arkansas. This Alexander could have then moved to Alabama to join relatives.

I do not know positively who Alexander is the son of. He appears in Jackson Co. Ala in the 1840 census on p. 43. Near by (p. 41) is Joseph and William W. McFarland. It is curious he did not show up on the 1830 census anywhere that I can find. His daughter Amanda stated she was from Jackson Co. Alabama and her father was A. McFarland. In the 1840 census, Hardin Long's father Arthur Long was on p. 35 and Alexander McFarland was on p. 43.
