I have detached Rebecca Bell from James Bell of Augusta Co. VA and his wife Agnes Hogshead. Even though he had a daughter named Rebecca, new evidence just discovered makes William Bell the likely father. (2016) What makes this likely is the discovery of the Petitions in 1784 from the inhabitants South of the French Broad River to the North Carolina General Assembly, asking for inclusion of their territory into Greene Co. In the list of people signing in 1788 there is a William Bell included in the list with John McFarland. Considering that John and Rebecca Bell McFarland name their second son William Bell McFarland, we can safely assume this connection.

There is a Rebecca Bell listed in the will of James Bell about 1782, Augusta County. This James Bell was probably born in Northern Ireland and came to Va. via Pennsylvania, just as the McFarlands did. He lived near Staunton, VA at Long Glades, and had children listed in the will as: James, Frances, David, Samuel, Thomas, Agnes, Sarah, and Rebecca. More research will need to be done to determine if this is the correct match. This particular James Bell would have been about 60 years old at her birth, which seems a little old. Maybe Rebecca Bell married to John McFarland, is a granddaughter to James Bell married to Agnes Hogshead and had an aunt named Rebecca.

THE ULSTER PLANTATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND

In 1610, when the Ulster Plantation was opened, a good number of Bells were encouraged to journey to the new "land of opportunity." A standard to assist in determining Bell origin for those Bells in North America is whether or not your ancestors came through the Ulster Plantation in Ireland.

A certain portion of Scotland was expressly excluded from the "privilege" of sharing in the Ulster experience as it was made a condition that the colonists, both of higher and lower ranks, must have been "born in England or the inward parts of Scotland." This restriction was specifically designed to exclude all persons in Argyllshire and the Isles. The MacMillans and their Bell Sept were of Argyllshire.

Nine "major" Bell families are identified as having lived in Ulster. Of them, it is said that between 1707 and 1729 approximately 500 Bell families emigrated from Ulster to North America where they flourished.

Not enough is known about Rebecca Bell and where she died or is buried. One story passed to me was that she died in Kentucky on the road, however by September, 1816 the family would have been in Missouri according to the birth place of Louisa, John Jr.'s daughter in 1815. The death date of Sept. 14, 1816 is recorded in the Bible records of daughter Nancy Caroline McFarland Sloan. It is also recorded in a separate Bible record owned by Lucille McFarland of Newport, Oregon. Obituary of her daughter Mary says that mother was a Baptist.
Not enough is known about Rebecca Bell and where she died or is buried. The date of 1816 seems too late. They should have been in Missouri by 1815 according to births. Obituary of her daughter Mary says that mother was a Baptist.

Haywood County:
Census Records for Haywood County, NC in 1810 show this John McFarland as a male older than 15 and younger than 26, with a wife the same, and a male younger than eleven, a female younger than 11, and another female younger than 16, but over 10. The records of these children are unknown at this time, but this might indicate the mystery son named John. A daughter bet. 10 and 15 seems unlikely, so this could be a relation instead.

Missouri:
In 1828 John McFarland and the heirs of John McFarland (deceased) made claim to 240 acres in Ste. Genevieve in or near the town of Avon today. Doc. #514, 515, and 516 for 80 acres each: Section 12, 35-N, Range 7 E. I can only speculate that this is the land where they first settled when they came to Missouri. (This would be land claimed by John husband of Rebecca Bell, because this is bought out by John Jr. to settle the estate of John Sr.)

There are several John McFarland land claims in Missouri, and there are at least two different John McFarlands living in the area around Avon, so it is hard to know anything for certain. It would seem that the land claim made in 1825 for 80 acres, Doc. 581, W1/2 SW, Sec. 33, 36N, 8E, and the 1837 claim of 40 acres, Cert. 3744, SESE 32, 36-N, 8-E, in Ste. Genevieve is the land where the Stone Church Cemetery is today. If so, then this would be the Rev. John McFarland's land claim. His home was used as a church meeting place (Methodist), until a stone church was erected in the 1840s. Rev. John McFarland, his wife, and some other children are buried there. This Rev. John McFarland is not related to our John in any known way. The Rev. John's parents were Duncan and Janet McFarland from Ireland.

There is an 1824 land claim by John McFarland, Doc. 508, for 126.72 acres: SW Sect. 7, 35-N, Range 7-E, that borders Ste. Francois/Ste. Genevieve line. This seems to be where he made his home for the census in 1830 and 1840.(This seems to be the preemption claim of George Cathey bought for $100. in 1816. There are two other claims made that seem adjacent to the claim above: Doc. 5131 and 5132, for 31 acres in SWNW 7, 35-N, 7E, and 40 acres at SENE Sect. 12, 35-N, 6-E. These lands seem to be next to Back Creek, and just below are the land claims made by Reuben and Jacob McFarland.

There is another land purchase made in 1829 recorded in Book A, p. 366-367 for 65 acres in NE quarter of Sect. 26, 35 N, Range 6 E, paid $65 to John McHenry and wife. This is near the Sect. 25 that brother James received from Elliott Jackson. In 1837 John sold this tract to Samuel P. Harris (Book B. p. 121).

Texas:

John's gravesite at OakRidge Cemetery is still visible, as is his wife's. Although I have records of John's daughters and their families, John's son, John, is lost to me at this time. I think he must have died young.

John McFarland, eldest brother of James McFarland, followed James to Fannin County around the year 1849, twelve years after James' arrival. In the 1830 and 1840 censuses his family was found in Libertyville, St. Francois County, Missouri. The earliest record of John McFarland (1787-1874), husband of Mary, in Fannin County is the purchase of land from James Chambers in 1849. It seems that Rice Smith, who owned the land grant north and adjacent to James McFarland, died and James McFarland administered the Rice estate in September, 1847. 104 acres were offered in public outcry in Bonham and James Chambers bought it for $55.00 (p. 299 Deed Record Book C). On p. 300 of the same deed book, John McFarland buys a parcel from James Chambers.

John then purchased 640 acres from James E. McConnell, which is an original land grant and adjacent to Jasper McFarland, Andrew White, D. P. Bridge, and Rice Smith's land grants, and near the Waggoner and Fuller grants. (p. 312, Book C)

On April 9, 1850 John bought 150 acres for $150 from the heirs of Mary Allen, headright of Mary Allen. Pat. #323 Vol. I, Nov. 19, 1845.

In the 1850 census John and wife Mary were living on this land with F.P. Deguire and his wife Eliza (John and Mary's daughter) and their children. Their neighbors were the Pences, Jasper McFarland, the Thomas Rattans, and Andrew White.

John continued to purchase more land. Book H, p. 429 records a purchase from the Heirs of Mary Allen. He then buys 41 acres for $41 from John Rattan out of the Daniel Waggoner survey, Book I, p. 5. Also he buys 55 acres for $55 from Isaac Hobbs, Book I, p. 293.
John gave a gift of land to Eliza Deguire, his daughter, on Sept. 20, 1852. Eliza died in 1853 giving birth to a daughter named Emily. In September 1855, this deed was cancelled and Deguire pays $510 to own 75 acres from the Mary Allen survey. Mary McFarland also signed this document. (Book I, p. 171)

Mary McFarland died in 1855 and is buried on land that became the Oak Ridge Cemetery in the late 1870s.

In January, 1857 John sold to Francis P. DeGuire, his son-in-law, one-half of 560 acres for $1000, p. 127 Book J. The land is described as being the late residence of John McFarland and deeded to him by James E. McConnell (280 acres) and 70 acres from the George Smith survey and part of Allen and Waggoner surveys.
In March, 1857 Jasper DeGuire, Francis' son, purchases 110 acres of the 280 acres for $400 from his father. (Book J, p. 176). Francis pays $337 for 135 acres from J.N. Walker, part of the Daniel Davis survey.
In Book K, p. 83, John gave his daughter Emily Pettit a gift of slaves:
"John McFarland for love and affection to my daughter Emily, wife of James N. Pettit…including two daughters of sd. James Pettit by a former wife, to wit Missouri and Lucretia.
Man - Sanders, age 32 years
Woman-Mary, age 27 years
Man - Henry, age 24 years
Boy - Charles- age 2 years
Boy - Joseph, age 2 years
Girl - Delilah, age 2 months"

In 1858 he bought another 250 acres on the North Sulphur from Hugh Braley (Pat. 792, Vol. 3), p. 84 in Deed Book K. And then he bought back land from F.P. Deguire that he had conveyed to him earlier. (P. 85, Book K)

John then sold to Alexander C. Sloan (his brother-in-law) 180 acres on Feb. 4, 1858 for $825.00. Alexander and Nancy Caroline McFarland Sloan must have moved here from Missouri at this time (p. 124, Book K.) In 1850 the Sloan family was living in Lafayette County, Missouri, on land valued at $3000 and owning four slaves.

Then John bought more land from Samuel Wall(s) for $100 in 1858 (who had previously bought it from John Rattan).( P. 105, Book L) He also buys land from John Biggerstaff. (p. 398, Book L)

In A History of Fannin County, by Floy Crandall Hodge, pub. 1966, he explains that the Flag Spring Church was organized in 1853 by Methodists and Baptists. Early trustees include Samuel Wall, Jackson McFarland, and Joseph Wigley. The Church must have been used as a school as well.

In 1860 John McFarland and D.P. Bridge conveyed land to establish a school for the Flag Springs Community. It came from the southeast corner of the 280 acres owned by John McFarland and the southwest corner of the 110 acres owned by D.P. Bridge, and part of the 640 acres of the Central National Road certificate of John Whittenburg. The trustees of the settlement are Samuel Wall, Jackson McFarland, and Joseph Wigley. (Book M, p. 420)

In the 1860 census John McFarland was living with his daughter Emily Pettit. J. N. Pettit, her husband, who in 1857 had sold slaves to John McFarland for $4500.00 (Book J, p. 250) was not present, and has probably died. (There is confusion about J. N. Pettit as there seems to be two different men by that name.) In the 1880 census, Emily lists herself as widowed, and this is confirmed by other court documents. Yet there is a J.N. Pettit buried in Moore's Chapel cemetery in Fannin County with a death date of 1891, so even though he has been connected with Emily by some descendants, he is not the same man.) They were living next to sister Nancy Caroline and her husband Alexander C. Sloan and their family in Beat 5, Fannin County. (Families 312, 313)

In 1867 John deeded to his daughter Emily Pettit, 180 acres of the 280 acres "I reside on" from the original tract of John Whittenburg and Daniel Waggoner that he bought from James E. McClellan for $17.00.

In 1868 John bought 100 more acres from Theophilus Wall for $600. (Book Q, p. 188-189)

In the 1870 census John, 82, was living with Emily, 44, on their land. His land was valued at $2500, and hers at $2000. At approximately $6 an acre, that puts his land at approximately 416 acres, and hers at 333 acres. The former slaves that he had given to his daughter have taken the name of Pettit and are still living on, and presumably working, the land.

There are no films of marriage records this early for these counties.

John married Mary Fleming about 1805 in Buncombe Co., North Carolina. Mary was born in Jun 1785 in Virginia; died on 31 Dec 1855 in Fannin Co., Texas; was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Fannin Co., Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Not sure where this record is, but Lola McFarland Hill was informed by the St. Francois County Clerk of a record I missed where on Nov. 1, 1832, Elliott Jackson, as attorney for Rucker Jackson of Hempstead Co. Arkansas sold 170 acres to James McFarland. This is probably in Book A as well. The family probably stopped in Arkansas for a short time before moving on in to Texas in 1837.

Texas:
Credited as a founder, with Daniel Davis, of the Ladonia community. Daniel Davis was the earliest settler, arriving in 1836, therefore receiving a Class 1 land grant. Because of his early death in Nov. 1837, his family sold his land and moved away. James McFarland purchased much of it that connected to his own land grant, and his grandchild James Franklin McFarland's homestead was on Daniel Davis land.

Southwestern Historical Quarterly: History of Fannin County, Texas, 1836-1843, p. 297 is discussing the Indian attack on the home of Daniel Davis in Nov. 1837 "Davis, less fortunate, had one arm broken and received a ball through his breast that killed him instantly. During that night a heavy rain had fallen forcing a scouting party of twelve or fourteen men from Lyday's Fort to seek shelter at the Davis house. This proved a fortunate thing for the remainder of the family, for no sooner had the Indians fired upon the two at the gate than they charged the house. They were swarming over the fences when the rangers opened the door. The sight of their unexpectedly large numbers caused the savages to retire in spite of the fact that the scouts were caught unarmed by the sudden attack and did not fire a shot. The rangers moved the dead man and his family from the scene of the tragedy to James McFarland's place three miles to the eastward, and it was there that Andrew Davis, the son, learned of his father's death, at ten o'clock in the morning, as he was returning fom the fort where he had been sent the night before with an old slave to obtain some hogs."

If this account is accurate, then it might be that Daniel Davis is buried in the McFarland cemetery, and was its first burial.

More information on land titles, wills, probates, etc. can be found in the document "Land Issues Concerning James McFarland and his Children" written by Mary Helen Haines. Note: in some places his middle initial is shown as an M. This is a typo deriving from the Mc in McFarland, I believe. It is possible that his middle name is Ewing, since this name appears several times in this family.

Patent #264 for 1280 acres. 2nd class grant. February 23, 1845. In the original survey James' land includes the North Sulphur River, but in a survey dating from the 1870s it stops short of the river and two plots that include the river are in the names of a Cunningham and a Fulton.

James makes a few other purchases. In 1847 he buys from Morgan Mullens part of the Rice Smith survey for $9.75. (Book G. p. 368) Then in 1853 he buys land in the Davis Creek area from Allen Tilly. (Book G. p. 442)

In the 1850 census James and Jane are fam. #217 living with James, 17, Wm, 16, Mary Jane, 14, Newton, 10, and Arthur, 5. James land is valued at $1000. Land is valued at approximately $1.00 an acre. Fam. #216 is Anna McF. Etheridge with husband Howard on land valued at $100. Fam. #218 is Sarah McF. Sebastian with husband Elijah on land valued at $30. Jackson is living with his family #221 on land valued at $1500. Living not too far away is John McFarland, James older brother, fam. #229 living with his wife Mary, daughter Eliza and her husband Francois Deguire. Jasper McFarland is fam. #225 living next to Andrew White, Thomas P. Ratton, and John and Nancy Pence (Artemissa's father and mother). Jasper's land is only worth $89. Cintha A. McF. Tucker is living with husband James C. Tucker, but they have no land. Fam. #176 is Rebecca McF. and husband Hezekiah Blankenship, with no land, living next to Albert, fam. #175 who has land valued at $240.

Unaccounted for is John Ewing McFarland. On July 7, 1845 James and Jane appear at the Fannin County court to claim a land certificate for 640 acres in the name of their deceased son, John Ewing McFarland. They are issued certificate #152- a 2nd class headright. I assume he is the McFarland son who died in the Indian raid that led to the establishment of the McFarland cemetery. James and Jane hold on to this certificate until February, 1871 when they sell it to O.P. Richardson for $320.00, or .50 cents an acre. The document reads "the land certificate issued by the Board of land Commissioners of Fannin Co. to our deceased legitimate son John Ewing McFarland." (Book T, p. 199). When this land was finally surveyed in 1874, it was located in Hunt County along the Caddo Fork of the Sabine River, near present day Caddo Mills. In 1875 the formal land grants, #636 and #637, were issued by the State of Texas to the Heirs of John Ewing McFarland. (certified copies of both documents)

James then proceeds to give grants to his daughters and sons-in-law. In 1853 he gives Mary Jane and her husband Wm. R. Terry 130 acres of land from Daniel Davis survey, and Allen Tilley purchase. (Deed Book G, p. 444) He gives Elijah Sebastian, his son-in-law, and his daughter Sarah, a deed of 44 acres, July 28, 1855 (Book L, p. 84.) Hezekiah Blankenship dies in 1852, leaving Rebecca a widow and Jackson McFarland is the executor of his estate (Box 3, Case #114).

In the 1860 census, James and Jane are fam. #598 living with Newton and Arthur R. on land valued at $4000, with personal property valued at $2000. Fam. #598 is L. Cunningham, married to Mary Jane McF. Cunningham, who has already buried 2 husbands. They are living on land valued at $300, personal property at $600. Fam. #599 is Elijah Sebastian and Sarah McF. with land valued at $400 and personal property at $200. The Moses Cunningham and John Hulsey families have moved in and bought big chunks of land near by. Jackson is Fam. #586 on land valued at $3000, with personal property of $2000.

James and Jane sell 200 acres of their headright to son Newton McFarland for $100 on May 23, 1870. Deed Book T, p. 275

All three documents are the conveyance of land titles to Anna Ethridge, Sarah Sebastian and Arthur McFarland. It seems that James and Jane McFarland wanted to disperse most of their land to their children while they were still alive, knowing that they would not be living much longer.
Sarah is given 156 acres, Anna is given 160 acres, Sarah gives to Arthur 44 acres that she had been given previously in 1855 (part of Rice Smith survey).

Location must have been in Missouri, judging from the birth locations of his brother John's children. The trip from North Carolina must have taken place in 1814 and arrived by 1815. There is no record of this marriage in the Ste. Genevieve, nor the later St. Francois county records.

James married Jane Jackson on 1 Dec 1816 in Ste. Genevieve Co., Missouri. Jane was born on 5 Feb 1801 in Scott Co., Kentucky; died on 14 May 1872 in Fannin Co., Texas; was buried in McFarland Cemetery 3 miles north of Ladonia, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Rebecca McFarland is listed as a child of John and Rebecca in the Bible records that belonged to Lucille McFarland of Newport Oregon with the birthday listed here.

I wonder why she is the only child born in Kentucky. The Rebecca McFarland married to John Deaver that appears on other family trees is shown as born in Kentucky, and the census of John Deaver in Grayson Co. Texas in 1850, fam. 248, p. 357 shows an R Deaver, age 53, born in Kentucky. It could be that her mother Rebecca Bell was visiting relatives there when this Rebecca was born.

In papers found in the Book G, p. 63 - 67 deed records of Ste. Genevieve County, all the other children are listed as heirs of John McFarland, except Rebecca. Why? In the documents, John McFarland is buying out all the heirs of property that was the land grant made for 240 acres on Dec. 16, 1828 in what is Avon, Ste. Genevieve County today. He pays out $30. to each brother and sister, for a total of $240. Rebecca is not mentioned at all.

The Deavers were neighbors of the McFarlands in Buncombe/Haywood County, NC, and John Deaver's father William R. Deaver Jr. purchased some of the McFarland land when they moved to MO. Also, he was John McFarland's attorney in fact for selling the rest of his land after John had left.

I also found a Joseph M. Deaver, age 26, that died in Dec. 1850 in Grayson Co. TX. He was born in 1824 in North Carolina, and therefore seems to be a part of this family.

Need to do more research. The Rebecca McFarland married to John Deaver that appears on other family trees is shown as born in Kentucky, and the census of John Deaver in Grayson Co. Texas in 1850, fam. 248, p. 357 shows an R Deaver, age 53, born in Kentucky. It could be that her mother Rebecca Bell was visiting relatives there when this Rebecca was born.
I now think this Rebecca could belong to another family. In papers found in the Book G, p. 63 - 67 deed records of Ste. Genevieve County, all the other children are listed as heirs of John McFarland, except Rebecca. Why? In the documents, John McFarland is buying out all the heirs of property that was the land grant made for 240 acres on Dec. 16, 1828 in what is Avon, Ste. Genevieve County today. He pays out $30. to each brother and sister, for a total of $240. Rebecca is not mentioned at all. However, John McFarland was involved in some kind of legal matters pertaining to Wm. Dever back in Buncombe Co. that had to be resolved after his death. It probably is finalizing the sale of his land, that he left in Wm. Dever's hands as his power of attorney.

Another thought on this. It could be that Rebecca married a McFarland back in North Carolina, and had a son named Jason, then the father died very quickly, and she remarried John Deaver, and he adopted her son. That could explain why she was not part of the original move to Missouri, why she did not move to the same county in Missouri, and then why the son Jason McFarland Deaver, did not move with the rest of the Deavers to Grayson Co. Texas before 1850. All of this is total speculation, but the attribution of Rebecca to the family of Rebecca and John McFarland just does not quite gel correctly.

I also found a Joseph M. Deaver, age 26, that died in Dec. 1850 in Grayson Co. TX. He was born in 1824 in North Carolina, and therefore seems to be a part of this family.

This branch of the family was recorded by Elsa McFarland Turner, in 1969 from her home in Albany, Texas. It is a booklet called Dear Folks: A McFarland Family 1764-1970. She especially centers on the descendants of Horatio Harris McFarland. She provides the birth, death, and marriage information about the descendants. I did not put everyone in this tree, it is quite extensive.

I found Martha's earlier marriage to Tinn C. Carter, on Oct. 12, 1848, in Barry Co. at the Baptist Church of Christ, minister Martin J. Butler M G. She must have given birth to three children, John M, Wm. C. and James H. before her husband's death, and then mrried William Riley in 1857 and be the mother of his two children Nancy E. and Wm. R. E. before her death after 1870.

According to own personal records that are now lodged at the Barker Museum in Austin, Texas, Jackson was also part of Chamber's Battalion of the Texas Reserve Corps Infantry, CSA. Papers in the National Archives show him as being sent home to Fannin County in August, 1864 to thresh grain for 60 days. This corresponds to paperwork in his possession. He is also part of Wm. Dulany's Company, who was the Captain of Co. K, of the 2nd Reg't. Cavalry of the Texas State Troops. He also joined the Masonic Order, Bethel Lodge #134, in Ladonia.

In August, 1858 a certificate was issued from Honey Grove, Fannin Co., Tex., #152, 2nd Class, for 640 acres to "Hars (sic) of John E. McFarland, dated 7th July 1845. John must have died before 1845 because his parents claim a 2nd class headright in the name of their deceased son in 1845. It is issued as #152 and then that same certificate is sold to O.P. Richardson in 1871 by James and Jane, saying their son was deceased. It seems more likely now that this John Ewing is the son that died in the Indian raid in the early years of settlement. According to family history, at the raid some McFarlands and Indians died and were buried at what now is designated as the McFarland Cemetery. This also means that he was a family man, since he was granted 640 acres, which means he had a widow, whose name we do not know. I think it could be Rebecca, who appears in the 1840 census as Rebecca McFarland, and we have not been able to place her. If she was his heir, then she should be the one claiming the land, not his parents.

He enlisted at Ft. Washita in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) by J.W. Piner for a period of 12 months. The Archive records show the date of death, but not the cause. In the disputed will of Jane McFarland, Arthur McFarland lists on Sept. 20, 1873 the children of Jane McFarland and 5 children are listed as children of Albert: Elizabeth Jane Mayo, wife of Cyrus, Mary Ann McFarland, William P. McFarland, Julia McFarland, and Josephine McFarland. This corresponds with the 1860 census list. I have not been able to find this family in 1870, although I have found Elizabeth and W.C. The Patent #446 is issued on May 18, 1852. On April 12, 1852 he says he is a family man now and living on the Middle Sulphur on land that appears to be vacant. Then he acquired it on July 27, 1855 as a preemption claim. The survey was done and he acquired 125 acres on the headwaters of the Middle Sulphur in Hunt County, 16 miles north-east of Greenville (today it would be very close to Commerce), next to J.D. White's survey of 640 acres and the state of Texas granted the patent in 1856, signed by Gov. Runnels.

In the probate records of Hezekiah Blankenship, Rebecca is shown owning 80 acres of property, a gift to her, located on the head right of James Albert McFarland survey, and was her separate property. Also, 160 acres from the same headright belonged to her. This as a report filed by her brother Jackson McFarland.

Rebecca is shown on the 1860 census living now as wife of George W. Wilkerson with their blended families from their first marriages.

The marriage certificate for George and Rebecca is written as George Wilkenson and Rebecca Blankinship, issued by the county clerk in Fannin County on Feb. 13, 1854. Whether they married that date is not known.

After the deaths of both McFarland parents, Rebecca and George moved to Indian Territory, which is verified in one of the probate settlement documents.

James is not in Fannin County in 1860, however I found a James McFarlan living in Collin County, ages 28, born in Missouri, married to Mary, age 25, born in Illinois. The age and birthplace work, so this could be James. P. 95 fam. 1224, P.O. Farmersville. In the 1870 and 1880 censuses Mary McFarland from Illinois is living with a Jones family in Farmersville, so I presume her husband is dead.
James must have died in the war, but I have no documentation other than passed down stories that some family members died. Julia Cunningham Stoddard said in 1958 in an interview with Lola McFarland Hill: "Uncle Jim went to the war in the company of my father, Lee Cunningham. They were nearly starved when they came upon a corn field; Jim ate too much and died before he got home." The National Archive record is for a J.R. McFarland, Private in Co. C, of the 22nd Cavalry, showing him on the Muster-in Roll at Ft. Washita Dec. 27, 1861. 5 ft. 10 in., 30 yrs. old, born in Missouri, hair black, eyes dark complexion dark, value of horse 180, value of rigging 25. The unit is called Taylor's Reg't Texas Mounted Rifles here. Then on the company Muster Role for January to June 1862, it shows him enlisted by J. W. Piner on Feb. 25, 1862 and is called the 1st Indian Reg't Texas Cavalry on this form. The logical conclusion is that James' full name is James Robert, which is repeated in the next generation.

He is part of Taylor's Regiment of Texas Mounted Rifles, 22nd Cavalry, Co. C. On the Muster Roll for Jan 16, to June 30, 1862, the Co. C is now call the 1 Indian Reg't Texas Cavalry, and it lists the enrolling commander as J.W. Piner for a period of 12 months. Then the next muster role is for June to Dec. 1862 and it says that he was discharged July 16, 1862 by order of Gen. Albert Pike, in compliance with Act of Congress approved April 16, 1862. Other records for A. McFarland show him enlisting on August 9, 1862 at Fort Washita for the duration of the war. He was part of the 31st Regiment, Texas Cavalry, also known as Hawpe's Regiment Texas Cavalry or Mounted Volunteers that was organized first on May 14th, 1862 with companies A to H. Company I was organized on August 9th, 1862. Then on December 28th, 1862 he is listed Absent without leave. Then in March and April of 1863 listed an Present and entitled to bounty, and last paid on June 30th, 1863.

On census in 1870 Arthur is shown at 26 married to Mary E, age 30, from Illinois, with three children using McFarland name: James F. 3, Lillian E. 5, and Edwin age 1. She thinks that Arthur died in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma and is buried on a hill-Rose Hill Cemetery. If he was buried there, the on-line records of those gravesites do not mention him.

She purchased the 160 acres of that pre-emption survey #137 from him in June 1882. Papers were filed and the official state patent #519 was issued to Mary E. McFarland for the 160 acres on May 23, 1884. But while this was happening, it seems that another pre-emption was being filed. On October 18, 1881 a survey #154 was done for 160 acres of vacant land for Arthur McFarland, that he occupied starting in August 22, 1881. A proof of settlement was filed on August 25, 1884. That land was adjacent to, and surrounding, the W.D. Wyatt survey #137. Then on Sept. 9, 1884, Mary E. and Arthur McFarland sold survey #154 of 160 acres to D.F. and W. B. Roddan for $200. The property was resurveyed Nov. 1886 as a corrected survey.
During the Civil War, Arthur is first recorded as being at Ft. Washita on Dec. 27, 1861. He is 17, black hare, dark eyes, dark complexion, on a horse valued at $150. and rigging $35. He is part of Taylor's Regiment of Texas Mounted Rifles, 22nd Cavalry, Co. C. On the Muster Roll for Jan 16, to June 30, 1862, the Co. C is now call the 1 Indian Reg't Texas Cavalry, and it lists the enrolling commander as J.W. Piner for a period of 12 months. Then the next muster role is for June to Dec. 1862 and it says that he was discharged July 16, 1862 by order of Gen. Albert Pike, in compliance with Act of Congress approved April 16, 1862. Other records for A. McFarland show him enlisting on August 9, 1862 at Fort Washita for the duration of the war. He was part of the 31st Regiment, Texas Cavalry, also known as Hawpe's Regiment Texas Cavalry or Mounted Volunteers that was organized first on May 14th, 1862 with companies A to H. Company I was organized on August 9th, 1862. Then on December 28th, 1862 he is listed Absent without leave. Then in March and April of 1863 listed an Present and entitled to bounty, and last paid on June 30th, 1863.

On census in 1870 Arthur is shown at 26 married to Mary E, age 30, from Illinois, with three children using McFarland name: James F. 3, Lillian E. 5, and Edwin age 1. The pictures above and below are of a small family cemetery tucked back off the main gravel road in to Webbers Falls from our place. It is very near an overpass on I-40, although you cannot see it from the freeway. I've always wondered who was buried there, and more importantly, who kept it up, because it is always well mowed and weeded and kept looking so nice. So one day Mary and I stopped and took some pictures. I'm so glad we did. I still don't know who keeps it up, but assume it is some family member or someone they pay to do it. I'll type up what the large headstone says in case you can't read it all. See below.

Jasper McFARLAND has been numbered among the progressive
agriculturists of Johnson County for the past ten years and is the
owner of a well improved homestead on section 35, township 47,
range 27. He is one of the native sons of Missouri, his birth having
taken place in Ste. Genevieve County, January15, 1838.

Joseph and Mary E. McFARLAND, the parents of our subject, were
born in North Carolina, and were married in Missouri. The father
was but four years of age when, in 1812, he was brought by his
parents to this state, and from that time until his death he continued
to live within its boundaries. A man of genial and kindly nature, he
had many friends, and no one was ever turned away form his door
hungry. When he was summoned to his last reward, in 1861, his loss
was deeply felt by the entire community.

Jasper McFarland was the third in a family of six children, and he
and one sister Mrs. Mary Anderson, are the only survivors. He
received a fair education and on arriving at a man's estate looked
around for a companion and helpmate. His choice fell on Cordelia
S., daughter of Carroll and Sarah (McFarland) George, who were
pioneers of Cooper and Morgan counties. The marriage of the
young couple was celebrated March 12, 1864, and shortly after this
event they moved to Nebraska, where our subject was engaged in
freighting on the plains.

Returning to Missouri in 1867, Mr McFarland rented land in Cass
County, and then for a year leased a farm in this county. His next
venture was to invest in property in Bates County, and from that
time he seemed to prosper, as he was very ambitious and devoted
every spare hour to the end he had in view. Finding that there was
money in handling livestock, he bought and sold cattle in connection
with his other employment. After a residence of sixteen years in
Bates county, he purchased his present home of eighty acres, in
1885, and has the tract under good cultivation.

The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. McFarland has been blessed by two
children, Flora L. and Sarah E. The elder daughter, a very intelligent
and accomplished young lady, is engaged in teaching school, and the
younger is the wife of David Yancey, a well-to-do farmer of Lafayette
County MO.

In manner our subject is pleasant and courteous, readily making
friends of all with whom he comes in contact. He uses his franchise
in favor of Democratic nominees and principles, and religiously is
identified with the Southern Methodist denomination.

Has there been a big mix-up, or just lots of bad information in the census records? In the 1850 census, Wm. Jones and Charles L. Jones from Tennessee are living with the Sloan family in Lafayette Missouri. The Sloan daughter, Missouri, is living with the family next door. Then in 1860 Wm M. Jones, 34, from Illinois, is living with wife M.A.Jones, 29, in Beat 1, Bonham, in Fannin Co. with son Charles L. 9, and Wm. H. 6. So now Charles is two years younger than before, if he is the same boy. Then following this same family in Fannin Co. to 1880, three more children are added, and they are living a few homes away from Alexander and Nancy Sloan. In the 1900 census, Missouri is a widow, age 70, living with James Jones, 29, and his family. In this census, they state their birthdates, and Missouri says she was born in May 1830, instead of the Feb. 1831 date given by researchers. She also states her father was born in Virginia and her mother in Missouri, which is not the case, but who knows how together her mind may have been.

The maternal grandfather, John Pettit, was a Virginian, and located in Wayne County, Mo., in 1819. He was a prominent physician, and followed that calling in connection with farming in Wayne County. He served as captain in the Black Hawk war, and in 1853 was killed by some highwayman or enemy. Newton McFarland, father of Dr. J.P., was in the service of the Iron Mountain Company for a number of years. He died in 1847. The mother is still living. They were the parents of three children, only two of whom are living; John P. and Charles. Dr. John P. McFarland was about four years old when his father died, and the greater portion of his youth was spent with an uncle. He was seventeen years old when he began the battle of life for himself. He began the study of medicine, and in 1866 graduated from the St. Louis Medical College, and immediately began practicing at Piedmont, where he has since made is home. In 1861 he complied with Gov. Jackson's call, and enlisted for six months as orderly sergeant in Company E, of the State Guards. In 1865 he was united in marriage to Samantha B. Lewis, a native of Alabama, who bore him two children, one living, Charles P. Mrs. McFarland is a member of the Christian Church, and the Doctor is a member of the Masonic fraternity."

He supposedly made his fortune there. From census records we know that Arthur McFarland joined Charles there after he left Fannin County because of the land dispute. MRS. JOHN WESLEY HULSEY (Cousin Cindy)

Funeral services for Mrs. Lucinda Pettit Hulsey, 96, early Fannin County Pioneer, who died at her home Saturday at 7:30 AM were held at the Oak Ridge Church of Christ Sunday. She was born near Ladonia in 1852 the daughter of J. N. and Emily McFarland Pettit. Survivors include: Mrs. Florence Scott and Mrs. Willie Mann of Ladonia, three sons, J. In. And Lee Hulsey of Ladonia, and Jim Hulsey of Wolfe City; 22 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was married to John Wesley Hulsey in March 1873. She obeyed the gospel when a young woman, she was the last charter member of the Oak Ridge Church of Christ. As long as health permitted she was ever faithful to the duties of her church, always maintaining the admonition" doing to others as you would have others do unto you." The visit of her friends never ceased to benefit her spiritually.

(Her mother was a sister of cousin Mollie Eaton's mother, cousin Louisa Cox and also of cousin Becky Lane. She was Emily.)

In Scollard's Ladonia Directory for 1899-1900, Jas. F. McFarland is listed as the vice-president of the First National Bank on the north corner square. The other vice-pres. is W.G. Nunn. His son Samuel Jackson is listed as a cashier at the bank, and relative D.E. Waggoner is another cashier.

Born August 9, 1847 in Fannin County, eldest son of A. Jackson and Artemissa Pence McFarland. Married Mary Jane Harper on February 4, 1872. Jackson deeded 176 acres to James, the start of his eventual 3000+ acres. Besides farming, James Franklin helped found the First National Bank of Ladonia, and served as President. He also joined with other farmers to organize the Pecan Gap Cotton Oil Company. He and Mary Jane joined the First Christian Church in Ladonia. Politically, he was a Republican, like his father and grandfather McFarland. 1890: address is Ladonia P.O. and had 1022 acres in cultivation. Around 1915, he fell ill and went to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where he was diagnosed with "pernicious anemia." Died February 4, 1917 and buried in the McFarland Lot, Section 4 of the Ladonia Cemetery.

My relations with him were close enough to enable me to understand something of his greatness. He was a typical American--the best type of an American. The spirit that made our forefathers conquerers, whether in battle or over the adverse circumstances of life, was th espirit of his vigorous manhood. He never shunned responsibility. As a mere boy he enlisted in the army of the Confederacy and served till the close of the war. In all the relations of life he has been equally prompt to do his duty as God gave him to see what his duty was. In business he was honest, conservative, and yet aggressive--successful. In politics he was courageous, independent, progressive and stood for the highest American ideals. Socially he was democratic, kindly, courteous. All classes of people were his friends. In religion he simply "believed God" and acted accordingly. His faith was simplicity itself. The church, our colleges, our missionary agencies were all dear to him and received his support and love, because they were all dedicated to the promotion of the kingdom of his God. ......"

JAMES FRANKLIN MCFARLAND

On last Sunday morning, Feb. 4, 1917, just as the sun rose and flood-
ed the earth with its glorious light, the soul of J. F. McFarland calmly
and peacefully (flew) from the bosom of his family to his God. Almost as if
by magic the entire town and community knew when this silver cord was
loosed, this golden bowl was broken and a sabbath stillness sacred and
profound fell over the city. He had borne his physical pain of three
years duration like a hero in which time everything known to medical
science, skillful nursing, and loving hands had been done to restore
to him the remarkable strength and vitality of earlier years , but his
work was finished and his loving wife must say goodbye on the forty-
fifth anniversary of their marriage.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon at the First
Christian Church by his pastor, Rev. J. William Stephens, assisted by
the other pastors in the town. Tributes of respect were also given by
R. M. Rowland and E. M. Waites of Fort Worth. After the remains were
viewed by hundreds of friends both white and colored, the vast cortege
moved to the great final resting place of all humanity. The pall bearers (?)
Slowly the remains passed through the town where all places of
business were closed, to the Presbyterian cemetery. He lies to the
south of the burial ground in the family plot selected by himself. . ~
Flowers of every hue and kind from friend all over the state mark
the spot.
Mr. McFarland was born in this county, near the place where he died,
on August 9, 1847. He was the eldest son of Jackson and Artemissa Mc-
Farland, who came from Illinois and settled a farm five miles north of
Ladonia in 1836. This old homestead is still owned by the heirs of the
man who settled it.
Young McFarland received only the education that could be secured
in the schools of that primitive time, but made splendid use of all
his opportunities and the knowledge that he gained.
J. F McFarland leaves three brothers and one sister, John E.,
N. J., and C. S McFarland, and Mrs. W. H. Cunningham, to whom he was
ever kind and devoted, especially the youngest brother whom he fos-
tered and loved as his own son. In 1872 he and Miss Mary Jane Harper
were united in marriage. To them ten children were born. The wife
and nine children survive him, and were present at his death. The sur-
viving children are Samuel Jackson McFarland and Mrs. W. M. Williams of
Dallas, Mrs. W. P. Jennings of McKinney, Dr. Gordon B. McFarland of
New York, and Mrs. H. E. Fuller, James R., John A., Miss Tennie and
Miss Lola of Ladonia.
As a friend of the family we know something of the strenuous ef-
forts of his noble wife and each child to make comfortable and happy
his life and that they will continue to honor his memory until they
meet him "where all tears are wiped away."
No man we have known has done more to advance the moral and mater-
ial welfare of Fannin County than did J. F. McFarland. He made a for-
tune, and he was wise enough to use that fortune to the best interests
of his own family, his community and his own state, rather than use
it to gratify selfish desires. He stood at all times ready to do bat-
tle for every good cause and against every evil cause and evil tenden-
cy. He gave his talents, his time and his money freely to every cause
he espoused, and he espoused some things which caused him to give much
in a material way. He was one of the most active workers in the var-
ious contests that were had in this county to drive the liquor traffic
from its borders. He never yielded to any man his place on the firing
line, and defeat never conquered his determination to fight on till the
victory was won. He was a friend to the school and the church, and
every agency that helped build the moral health of the state. He
gave most liberally to the schools of the Christian churches of the
state, and he contributed much to the local church of which he was
a member.
He was a life-long Republican in politics, living in an almost
solidly"Democratic community, and yet his influence was worth as much
in the Democratic primary election as any man's. The secret of this
was his loyalty to that which was good, and the confidence the people

port a bad man or a bad measure.
He and his good wife reared a family of boys and girls who have
grown into manhood and womanhood of which their parents can be proud.
They are shouldering the burdens and carrying on the good works that
their parents before them gave example to follow. Had they done no great-
er work than to give to the world such sons and daughters, then would (?)
their lives have been a blessing to mankind. Only those who actually
know something of the conditions here in pioneer days can fully appre-
ciate the work this good man did. A (?) he labored faithfully and well
on earth, so will he reap an abundant reward in heaven.

The house James Franklin and Mary Jane built in 1885 on Hwy 2990, and renovated in 1902 burned to the ground in 2013 and the fire killed the owners Richard Fields and wife.

A letter written to his son Samuel Jackson and wife Jewel McFarland on August 9, 1915 on his 68th birthday from Manitou Colorado where he spent three summers before he died of pernicious anemia.

Dear Jewell 68 years ago to day there was a little Boy born on an open prairie with very few neighbors in a wild country infested with Bear panthers Deer and all kinds of wild animals during those sixty eight years that same boy has worked for the upbuilding of his county and the good of humanity- and to day he is located in a little cottage on the side of a mountain in far off Colorado clinging for health. I am feeling fine this morning had a good night last night- our friends have been very mindful of us. Mr. John Miller paid us a visit and took us out in his car for a twenty mile drive. Mr. Bowland is at Denver he wrote me he would visit us soon. The Riter girls and Grace Hackly have been here and the Agnew Girls on their way home from Sanfrancisco stopped to see us and Mr. Wills came up one day and spent a while with us and the Galbraiths will be up to take dinner with us today. Edgar has just come in with a ninety cent hen so I suppose we will have something good for dinner. All I wish is that I can not have all the children here to all eat at the same table to day. Would like to one long enough to accommodate everyone at once however that is impossible and we will have to make the best of everything we can...Sarah Wilhite spent several days with us left last evening to visit Sallie we all enjoyed her little visit so much we learned so much about the kin in Nebraska when she left she said she thought she and Jewel's daughter would visit us all sometime in the future. Yesterday was real cold here too cold to be comfortable we sat around the fire all day. but the sunshines beautifully this morning. The passing of another week bring into existence another flower, just as rare and beautiful as any which we have strawn along the pathway of life. This week we have selected a farmer of the great Ladonia country, Mr. J. E. McFarland.

Mr. McFarland owns a large farm and beautiful home about 7 miles northeast of Ladonia, on the Bonham pike in the Silver City community. He is the kind of farmer who believes in diversification, and usually raises large crops of grain, fruits, caught, poultry and pork. He is also a man who believes in a good community, always taking a leading part in school and church affairs and it is largely through his effort that they are rated among the best rural in the County. Mr. McFarland has served Woods school for years as an efficient trustee.

As a young man Mr. McFarland united with the First Christian Church and has been an active worker in that congregation for years and has always supported financially and otherwise. He has proven himself in many ways to be an influential citizen.

Mr. McFarland and family enjoy the many luxuries the farm now affords, electric lights, radio, Victrola, piano; automobile and good roads.

As to the affairs of community, county and state you can always depend on Mr. McFarland being well informed. He believes in selecting the man for a public office who is competent and best qualified to fill the trust, and has never voted for a man merely through sympathy our friendship. You can always depend on his being on the right side of every question. Mr. McFarland is a good acquaintance, a special friend and he always finds the warmest welcome wherever he goes. Mr. and Mrs. McFarland have reared a large family of Christian girls and boys and they are now enjoying the latter years of life is only those can who live in contentment.

PIONEER LADONIA CITIZEN IS DEAD

John E. McFarland was born April 19th, 1849, and passed away at 1:05 on the morning of August 13th, 1927, being at the time of his going, 78 years 4 months and 4 days of age.

He was united in marriage to Nancy B. Horn, on September 25, 1873. To this union seven children were born, six of whom are living; Susie McFarland Abshire, (deceased) Artimessia McFarland Rattan, James N. McFarland, John J. McFarland, Cordelia McFarland Bartley, Annette McFarland Milford, Newman Horn McFarland.

John McFarland was born, reared and died, on the same farm. This is unusual, and complimentary too, for his boy-hood friends loved him as in the days of their youth. He was of a generous nature and ready at all times to lend a hand and means to his fellow man. Living in his house by the side of the road, he proved himself a real friend to all who passed his way.

He was a Christian for thirty-six years, and his life was such that he will be missed by his community as a man of true worth and benefit to all. Those who knew him loved him for his cheerful and hopeful disposition which was in evidence, even to the time of his going.

He leaves to hold him in cheerished (sic) memory, the companion, the six children, thirty-one grand children, and thirteen great-grand children, together wild a host of relatives and friends, numbered by those who knew him.

Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church of Ladonia Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E.B. Chancellor, minister after which the remains were interred in the local cemetery. The funeral services were largely attended by the relatives and friends.

Six of the grandsons acted as pallbearers.

Mrs. W. W. Cunningham Passed Away
Nancy Jane McFarland, the only daughter of Jackson and Artemissa McFarland was born Jan. 2, 1851, was married to Wm. W. Cunningham Jan. 4, 1872 and passed into the Great Beyond Feb'y 14, 1924. She leaves a truly devoted husband, four sons: Matthen (typo), William, James and Logan and a daughter, Mrs. W H. Wilson, and four grand-children. All were present at her home going, though death came most unexpectedly. The bodily strength that had been impaired for a number of years could not withstand an attack of acute indigestion which occurred about then days prior to her death. But on Thursday morning Feb. 14, she seemed much improved, ate a good breakfast and expressed a belief that she would soon be well again. Within thirty minutes, despite all that could be done the tired, wornout body found rest in the Life Eternal.
She was an old fashioned mother, the kind of a mother we love the best. She was an ardent lover of her home, having been born, spent her childhood, married and reared her family at her father's old homestead, and here the death angel found her when she was ready to go. No task was ever too hard for her if it meant comfort to her household. Of her father's family only three brothers remain. They are John E., Newton J, and C.S. (Bose) McFarland: all in and near Ladonia. The oldest brother, J. F. McFarland died Feb. 4, 1917.
Mrs. Cunningham had been a Christian forty years. In a quite and unpretentious way she had let her light shine through all these years. She was outspoken against wrong and she possessed unusual strength of character. The funeral service was held at the Plainview Christian Church and was conducted by Eld. Jno. T. Louderdale of St. Jo, Texas who had been a devoted friend of the family for a number of years.
He was assisted by W. M. Williams, editor of the Christian Courier, who is also closely attached to the family. He laid her to rest in the Hulsey cemetery beside the little daughter they placed there years ago. The pall bearers were six stalwart nephews whose Sunday visits to "Aunt Jane's" will ever remain among the happiest of childhood's memories. They were Sam, Will, Newman, Jim, Lee and Sylvester McFarland. As a last service of love five nieces lovingly placed the flowers on the grave of the aunt they loved so well and the thought of whose life will linger in their memories as the embodiment of loyalty, hospitality and devotion to those around her.
The following relatives from a distance attended the funeral: Mrs. R. H. Steppe, Mrs. Oscar Scott, W.M. Willliams and family, Miss Vista Cunningham, Sylvester McFarland, Samuel J. and James R. McFarland, all of Dallas: Mr. and Mrs. J.N. McFarland of Greenville; Jack McFarland of Bonham; Mrs. Oscar Moore, Windom; Mrs. Lura London, Bailey; Mesdames Walls and Shrum of Cash; Jas. Cunningham, Honey Grove and Mr. and Mrs. Johnson of Wolfe City.

NOTES: The Hulsey Cemetery is the Oak Ridge Cemetery today. The Plainview Christian Church was the name for the present Oak Ridge Church of Christ Church. W.M. Williams is the husband of Jane's niece, Florence McFarland, daughter of James Franklin McF. and a Christian minister.

In 1887, Russell B. Hill, the town blacksmith and deputy sheriff was killed and his estate was put up for sale. A piece of land, part of Block 51 Plat of Ladonia was purchased for $400 cash. This is probably the location of the future store.

1900 census, he is listed as a Bartender. In the Scollard's Ladonia Directory, C.S. McFarland, owner of a saloon is at 314 Haines St. Cobb add. Son Will is listed as McFarland W. student at 314 hines sT. Cobb Add.

He was the General manager of the Jackson McFarland General Merchandise Co. from 1908 to 1924. He became suddenly ill with a "peculiar malady," as the newspaper put it, and had a very rapid decline.

Information from Attending Physician: Started noticing symptoms on July 1, 1925. Doctors opinion was he died of Lympho Sarcoma, tumors of the stomach, which came on fairly quickly, treated from July 15, 1925 till death. Was confined to house starting Aug. 1, 1925. No autopsy.

C.S. McFarland Died In Paris Sanitarium

There came a sad message to Ladonia last Saturday afternoon from the sanitarium of Paris; a message which dimmed many eyes and saddened many hearts. It was that the brave spirit of Mr. C. S. McFarland, which had so courageously fought its battle against pain and disease for the last several weeks, had taken it eternal flight.

About sixty years ago in a substantial farm home some six miles north of Ladonia a little baby came as the fifth child to brighten and bless. This little boy was named Cyrus Sylvester McFarland, but was soon dubbed "Bose" by the family, and as "Bose" and "Mr. Bose" he lovingly dwells in our heart's memories.

In his young manhood he married Miss Sue Lee, and they established a happy home here. He wife and two children, Will and Miss Ethel, survive him.

Mr. McFarland was a business man of Ladonia for more than thirty years, and although a man of few words, was always to be identified with any movement for the good of the town. He was active in business until just a few weeks ago, when he was stricken with a peculiar malady, and although the hopelessness of his case was apparent from the beginning, his rapid decline and his death were a shock to his dear ones and friends. Everything that loving hands could do was done to ease his going and in the end God seemed to remember how good "Bose" McFarland had been to others and his going was as a "fall on sleep.

Truly, Mr. McFarland was a man who "lived in a house by the side of the road and was a friend to man." No one either white or black, ever went to him for help and turned away empty handed, and, though he was no professed Christian, we know of many "cups of cold water" given in love to Christ's little ones; not even his own family know of many deeds of love done for his friends, for to be his friend was to have free access to everything he owned. He was the type of man who would lay down his fife for a friend, and for friends he chose the good, the bad, the rich, the poor, the sage and little children.

When the recording angel comes to write the name of Bose McFarland he will write along with Abou Ben Adhem of old, for by his life he has said, "I pray thee then, write me as one who loved his fellowmen."

C.S. (Bose) McFarland has gone out from us and will be seen no more among the walks of men. The youngest of five children born to Jackson and Artemisa McFarland he was given to this world for sixty years. He was reared on the farm, educated in country and attended college at Savoy, Texas.

In early manhood was married to Miss Susie Lee of the adjoining community and to this union were born three children--two of whom survive him.

Bose McFarland never made a flourish of trumpets but was a man of wonderful energy and posessed (sic) a soul full of emotions. He loved deeply those who were near and dear to him and would divide his last penny with a friend. Few men have lived and wrought and gone out of the world who had fewer enmies (sic) than did Bose Mcfarland. Here again the bigness of his soul looms large for it was a rule of his life not to speak unkindly of his fellow man. It could be said that he was liberal to a fault for there are uncounted families, and individuals who thruout (sic) the years have found their way to his place of business and there from his hands received food and clothing to carry them along without consideration on his part as to the way and manner in which they could reimburse him.

He was loved by both white and black, for he was truly a friend to man.

I was truly said of Bose McFarland that if the whole word were made up of men exactly like him it would be a better world in which to live.

There was no jealousy or envy in his nature, he believed that every man should do his best to succeed and he was always glad when effort brought reward. He has gone home--He will be missed by many--His loss will be keenly felt not only by his wife and children but by the whole community as well.

I can not figure out the discrepancies that exist in her name and information that people have written about her. In the 1870 census in Fannin Co. Texas, she is named Nancy Wilkerson, and is born in 1864. In the Fortenberry Family Tree information she is described as named "Lizzie." It also states that she died in 1899 and she was 41, which means she was born in 1858. In another place in the same document it says she was born Feb. 1, 1851 and was born in Bowie County, Texas. None of that information fits with her being the same child named Nancy, and where did the "Rebecca Bell" part of her name come from. I would like to see some documentation to clear all this up.

The information that Sarah E. Blankenship is the wife of William Washington Sloan, a Baptist minister, is family information and not verified. The William Sloan in Fannin County is married to an "S" born in Arkansas around 1822. Notes from descendant Rita Woodward said he disappeared 1901, foul play suspected.

He was living with his family in Haskell Co., TX in 1900. A daughter was born in 1902. His widow and the family were living in Jackson Co. Oklahoma in 1910.

In the 1910 census, Sarah says she has 11 children, 10 alive. She is living with Jack, 15, McKinley, 13, Ova 11, and Daisy, age 8.

Martha Mae never appeared in the census records with Newton and Sarah, because it appears they were in Oklahoma for the 1880 census. By 1900, Martha has married Glasscock and is living in Hunt Co. There appears to be another child, probably born after Martha Mae, possibly in Indian Territory as well, but that child is unknown.

Newton married Sarah Melissa Roberts in 1875. Sarah was born in Feb 1858 in Jack County, Texas; died on 14 Sep 1918 in Clinton, Hunt Co., Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Tucker would receive a total of $1,295.66, as his portion of the estate--in other words, the portion that would have gone to his mother if she had been alive.
