Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Duncan McFarland, BY214647 DuM01 was born about 1700 in Ireland; died about 1792 in prob. Greene Co. TN; was buried in George Cleek Cem, Bath, Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1753, Augusta County, Va
    • Occupation: 1755, Augusta County, Virginia, USA; Weaver. CHALKLEY'S CHRONICLES; Vol 3, p. 332. Duncan is present as early as 1755 when he is mentioned as a weaver here in the Augusta Order Book.
    • Residence: 1764, Augusta County, Va
    • Possessions: 1767, Augusta Co. Virginia; 1767: Duncan purchased 100 acres from William and Barbara Willson on both sides of Jackson River in 1767 (Deed Book No. 13, p. 226-7, March 18), however he was probably living there before that.
    • Residence: 1767
    • Possessions: Between 1786 and 1790, Augusta Co., Virginia; In the land tax records for Augusta Co. for years 1786-1790, Duncan McFarland owned two pieces of property, 100 acres and 119 acres.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

Y-DNA results at familytreedna.com have shown that this Duncan McFarland/McFarlane line in America is not related to the line of Robert McFarland of Lancaster Co. PA. Instead the tests of several descendants of the Russell Co. VA line (Duncan's sons and grandsons) have shown these descendants are part of the same genetic family as the family of Daniel McFarland, immigrant to Massachusetts in 1718 who died in Worcester, MA in 1738, as well as the line of McFarlands from Orange/Granville Co. NC. who appear in the area in the 1780s. This is part of the Scots lineage: L-21>DF13>L1065>FT92329 (abt. 800 AD)>FT88395 (abt. 1600 AD)>BY214647 which begins this line.

There have been three intermarriages between the Duncan McFarland of Bath VA line and the Robert McFarland of Lancaster PA line. One is the marriage of Lucy Ann McFarlane, daughter of Anger Washington McFarlane to Finis Monroe McFarland, son of David McFarland in Texas. Another is the descendant of Rhoda McFarland (daugther of William of Wolf Creek VA) marrying a descendant of Duncan McFarland of Whitley Co. KY. Because of DNA testing we know that Duncan of Whitley is associated with the Robert of Lancaster line.

Thank you Mary T. Haines for your file on Duncan and the previous work you have done. It is nice to see that we all hit the same brick walls.

First: Duncan's birth. From Col. James McFarlane of Virginia, by Lake McFarlane Parsons, p. 1 "...and according to some reports was an immigrant from Weter, Ireland in 1718...." She does not name a source. The closest name place in Ireland to Weter, is a Witter parish, located in County Down, but there are no records available in Ireland this far back in time to verify if this is correct.

Duncan's birth year is a guess based on the 1760 record in Augusta County when he was exempt from militia duty because of old age. All men, 16 to 60, were expected to serve in the local militias, therefore he must have been over 60 in that year.

From Neel-Dickson Genealogy, Chapter 10, by Wm. Trent Neel, pp. 268, 269:
1753: March 18. James Lockhart "made oath that he was afraid Duncan McFarland and his son William would kill or injure some of his stock of creatures" Order Book 1, p. 453, or Lyman Chalkey's Chronicles, Vol. 1, p. 58.

    May 1753, Duncan McFarland and James Lockhart were in the list of tithables named to assist in clearing a roadway from John Brown's bridge to the Glebe House. Chalkey, Vol 7, p. 444. (James Lockhart seems to have lived on the headwaters of Middle River of the Shenandoah some 6 to 10 miles southwest of Staunton-the Glebe house was located on the headwaters of Middle River just two miles west of Sugar Loaf mountain.) {mhh-cannot find a mountain by this name. Also, not clear if he owned land, don't have any deed documents for this.}

    1755: Augusta Co. VA, AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA - CHALKLEY'S CHRONICLES; Vol 3, p. 332.
Duncan is present as early as 1755 when he is mentioned as a weaver here in the Augusta Order Book. This is an abstract, so not sure what the connection to Robert Young here:

Page 506.--18th March, 1755. Robert Young, plantationer, to William.
Hugh and Joseph Young, his sons, for their better preferment and
advancement Conveys his personal estate. Duncan McFarland, weaver,
Thomas Bradshaw, weaver; (Robert called distiller). Teste: Francis
    Dame. Delivered: James Young.

1767: Duncan purchased 100 acres from William and Barbara Willson on both sides of Jackson River in 1767 (Deed Book No. 13, p. 226-7, March 18), however he was probably living there before that. In the book History of Highland County, by Morton, p. 83, talks of the Indian raid in 1764 on the home of William Wilson at the mouth of Bolar Run. The family was building a new house and "An Irishman was weaving outdoors near the old house.....In fleeing toward the house, Barbara Wilson was struck by a flying tomahawk and rendered unconscious, ...The weaver escaped with a bullet wound in his shoulder."

From George Cleek's Early Western Augusta Pioneers, 1992 (Dallas Public Library 929.20973 C6244C 1992)

    p. 129 quotes from Augusta Order Book 10, p. 478 March 18, 1767 where a petition has been made for a road to be built, mentions Robert Bratton.....William Givens, Duncan Mcfarling, Robert Mcfarling, Alex McFarling......at foot of Bull Pasture to Branch near Feemsters....

    p. 59 in Annals of Bath County by Oren F. Morton, 1917, make this order clearer when it says a view was ordered from William Wilson's mill on Bolar Run "into the New Layed out Road at the foot of the Bull Pastures and thence into the Branch near Feemsters" Also included in the petition was Robert Bratton, Duncan's son-in-law.

Reference to Duncan's property: May 15, 1770. Conveyance of property in Beverley Manor, corner of Duncan McFarland, George Peary's line...(L.C. VIII, p. 498) (George Peary also lived adjacent to James Lockhart) Source, p. 269 from Neel-Dickson Genealogy.

This area of Augusta Co. becomes Bath County VA in 1791.

In the land tax records for Augusta Co. for years 1786-1790, Duncan McFarland owned two pieces of property, 100 acres and 119 acres.

From Augusta County Personal Property Taxes 1782-1795, microfilm R-25 at Dallas Public Library:

1782: Image 29 on roll: Duncan McFarland, 1 tithe, 5 horses, 11 cattle, next to George Bratton, near William Willson, who sold him his land

    1783: Image 72: Duncan McFarland, 1 tithe, 5 horses, 11 cattle

1784: Image 73: Duncan McFarland, 1 tithe, 5 horses, 11 cattle. On same page is Thomas Neal. Is this the same Thomas Neal, married to Eleanor McFarland, Duncan's granddaughter? Probably yes because Thomas Neal does not appear in the tax list in Montgomery Co. VA in 1782, while William McFarland (father of Eleanor) does.

1785:Image 127: Alexander McFarland, 1 tithe, 7 horses, 6 cattle (So, has Duncan become too old to be taxed, and Alexander, his son, has returned home from somewhere else?)

I786: Image 177: Alexander McFarland, 2 tithes, 8 horses, 12 cattle (so is the second tithe Duncan?)

1787: Image 225: Alex Mcfarling person's name charged with tax, Alex Mcfarling name of white male tithe above 21, 15 horses, 20 cattle

1788: couldn't find them in the pages, a John McFarlin is present (and he continues in the 1790s) (Is this Duncan's grandson John?)

    1789: Image 310: Alexander Mcfarland: 1 tithe, 11 horses

1790: they are absent and do not reappear

While it is often stated that Duncan McFarland died on his property near the Jackson River, the court record below would seem to refute that. Possibly his wife is buried there, and then he moved south to live with his son Alexander in Tennessee.

From Greene County, Tennessee Minutes of the Court of Common Pleas, 1783-1795, compiled by Goldene Fillers Burgner, p. 82 "A Power of Attorney from DUNCAN MCFARLAND TO ALEX MCFARLAND dated August second 1790 (giving unto the said ALEX full power and authority to ask, demand, (p. 176) sell for recover and receive all debts, dues etc) was duly acknowledged by the said DUNCAN and admitted to record.

The land was sold in 1792, so Duncan probably died around this time. The two documents selling the land are in Bath County, Deed Book 1, pp. 66-69. Dated Feb. 20, 1792, Alexander McFarland of Green County North Carolina (TN), as power of attorney for Duncan McFarland, is selling to Jacob Cleek, two parcels of land that adjoin each other on Jackson's River, below William Givens. The 100 acre parcel sold for 200 lbs. Virginia money, and the 119 acre parcel also for 200 lbs.

Macfarlane Clan was one of the Highland Clans in Scotland. They moved from
Aryleshire, Scotland to Ireland about 1601, where the name changed from
Macfarlane to McFarland. There have been no fewer than 23 Lairds of
Macfarlane, the last of whom came to America early in the 18th century.
_____1. Duncan McFarland (1), died in Bath County, Virginia; married Anne
Porter, daughter of a sea captain. Duncan McFarland was a weaver and was in
Augusta County before 1750. He settled on Jackson River in what is now Bath
County, Virginia. Both are buried near the George Cleek Cemetery in Bath
County, Virginia in unmarked graves. The McFarland family abandoned their
cabin cave on the east side of Jackson River just opposite their cabin. From
the cave they saw their home and personal belongings destroyed and their
livestock tortured and killed. After several years of discouragement by being
continually harassed by the cunning Indians, descendants of Duncan McFarland
sold their real estate to Jacob Cleek in February 1792 and settled in that part
of North Carolina which is now included in the state of Tennessee.
    _____Children: 4 (others?)
_____2. i. Robert McFArland (2), died in 1798; married Esther Houston,
daughter of John Houston (1669-1755) and Margaret Crawford. He qualified a
Lieutenant on November 16, 1752 (Abstracts from the Records of Augusta County,
Virginia, Lyman Chalkley, Vol. II, page 55). Their daughter, Anne McFarland
(3), born 1723; married (1) in 1738, Captain Alexander Dunlap, born 1716; died
    1744; married (2) in 1745, Robert Bratton, born May 20, 1712; died in 1785.
(See Bratton Family). (the family of John McFarland below, claims the Lieutenant above was to the Robert from their line) (MHH notes: The Robert who lived in Rockbridge Co. is not the same Robert connected to the Bratton family.)
_____3. ii. John McFarland (2), called "Old Scotland John", married Mary
Montgomery. He was one of the first Elders in the Old Stone Church in Augusta
County, Virginia. Two of his grandsons were active in the early settlement of
the Tennessee border territory. They were Colonel Robert McFArland (son of
Robert McFarland) and Colonel John McFarland (son of Benjamin McFarland).
Colonel John McFarland represented Jefferson County, Tennessee in the
Legislature at Nashville in 1824. John McFarland (2) qualified as Ensign on
November 16, 1752. (Abstracts from the Records of Augusta County, Virginia,
Lyman Chalkley, Vol. II, page 55). (Mary Helen Haines notes: This is NOT a son of Duncan. John is a son of Robert McFarland who died in Lancaster Co. PA in 1751)
_____4. iii. William McFarland (2), married _____ Gibson, daughter of
Alexander Gibson and Mary _____. William McFarland served in the Revolution.
_____5. iv. Alexander McFarland (2). He was wounded in the Battle of Point
    Pleasant, October 10, 1774. (Ibid, Vol. I, page 254).

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

From George Cleek's Early Western Augusta Pioneers, from DallasPublicLibrary 929.20973 C6244C 1992
He is quoting Augusta Order Book X, p. 478, March 18, 1767 where there is a petition to build a road and the signers include Robert Bratton, William Givens, Duncan Mcfarling, Robert Mcfarling, Alex Mcfarling...at foot of Bull Pasture to Branch near Feemsters

This tends to support the idea of a relationship between Duncan and Robert and Alexander.

There are three documents for a Robert McFarland in Augusta County during the Revolutionary War period. They could be for this Robert McFarland, or they could be referring to the Robert Henry McFarland, born abt. 1740, supposed son of Alexander McFarland, son of Duncan.

First: in 1775 Robert McFarland was paid for his service during the Dunmore Expedition time period. He was paid for 13 days as a scout, and also for 25 days hired...it seems to read something about horses. This is from p. 23 of Dunmore's Expedition: Payrolls and Public Service Claims 1775, pub. 1930, Library of Virginia. Also, on p. 105, Robert McFarland is paid for 112 days duty with Capt. John Lewis's company, on the same payroll as Alexander McFarland.

A Robert McFarland also appears in Staunton court in October, 1776 where he is called as a witness against Alexander Miller, a Rev. who has refused to be disloyal to the King. Robert is also being paid for travel accompanying said Miller, and the distance he travels to Staunton indicates he is coming from Duncan's area, not Reed Creek area. Found this is Vol. 1 Abstracts from the Records of Augusta County,
    Virginia, by Lyman Chalkley, on-line:

"To Robt. McFarland, summoned by the officer; to assist, for going 50
miles, at 4 pence per mile. To the witnesses for attending one day each, 25
pounds of tobacco, or two shillings and one penny, viz: William Ewing,
Silas Hart, Mary Erwin, James Montgomery, William Givens, Robert McFarland,
    Thomas Smith, and James Hill.

Notice William Givens in both articles. William Givens (Givins) owned the land adjacent (north) of Duncan's land.

I feel confident that this event is attached to this Robert McFarland, not the Robert of Montgomery Co. VA, son of John McFarland (so-called Scotland John), nor the later Robert McFarland of Rockbridge Co. VA, who was still in PA at this time. I have seen this record mistakenly attributed to the Robert of Rockbridge in DAR records.

I have not run across any land deeds for Robert. Did he live with Duncan?

One source has his wife as Esther Houston, and his death as Jan. 20, 1775 in Fincastle. I have not been able to find a source for this death date. If this is true then some of the records above are probably referring to the younger Robert "Henry"

Another record I found is the Muster Roll of Capt. Joseph Crockett's Co. of the 7th Regiment, made Nov. 1777, by Col. Alex McClennahan (from Augusta Co.) where Robert McFarlane enlisted for 3 years, and is on furlough in Nov. 1777. Some of the names include Richard Scaggs, Robert Sayers as 1st Lt. and Thomas Quirk as 2nd Lt. Don't know for sure who this is.

Some sources believe that this Robert moved to Rockbridge County and is the Robert who died there in 1798. That has proved to be incorrect, verified by Y-DNA tests from each of these family's descendants.

Older notes on Robert McFarland, Duncan's son?:
QUESTIONABLE LINK: It is purely hypothetical that he is the son of Duncan.
There appears to be some connection, and I am placing him as the son of Duncan.
Since there is listed only daughters and no spouses for the daughters, I am
here assuming that he died during mid life, rather than of old age. Assuming
    age of 40-50 years.
SOURCE: FHC Ancestral File. Lists Robert (as born 1710) as a brother of
Duncan (of Augusta County) and John (born ca 1720, died Wythe Co, VA).
Robert, born 1710, Mary born 1700. Children: Mary born 1725, Hannah born
1727, and Jane born 1729. All listed as from Scotland. (mhh: This is obviously erroneous. This comes from the Cleek book it seems.)
PLACE: Fincastle was discontinued as a county in 1777. Botetourt, Montgomery,
and Washington were formed from it.
TO-DO: Find source of this family. Perhaps a will in Washington County?

Family/Spouse: not known. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 18. Jane McFarland  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1750 in ,,Virginia of.
    2. 19. Mary McFarland  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1750 in ,,Virginia of.
    3. 20. Hannah McFarland  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1755 in ,,Virginia of.

  3. 4.  Alexander McFarland, BY214647 Descendancy chart to this point (1.Duncan1) was born in 1727.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

There is great confusion about this Alexander McFarland. His name first appears in records in Augusta Co. in 1767. There is an Alexander McFarland who fights at the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774 and states that he was born in 1750 in his pension requests. However, the descendants of Robert Henry McFarland, who was born about 1740-50, claim that Alexander is his father. So......are there one or two Alexanders?

The elder Alexander must have moved to Greene County TN where he shows up on the first tax list. At some point Duncan must have moved there too, because he gives Alexander his power of attorney in the Greene Co. court in 1790. In 1792, Alexander traveled back to Augusta to sell the estate to Jacob Cleek.

Records for land in Greene Co. TN begin in 1782 and the land is described in various places as the Meadows and Sinking Spring in 1787, and then as being on the north side of the Nolachucky river, mouth of Meadow Creek, and Alexander is paying taxes on 400 acres in 1793.

The same land in Greene Co. owned by Alexander McFarland that he paid taxes on 400 acres, in 1793, was then sold in two parts. The first 200 acres was sold in 1795 to William Hall Jr, and no wife was involved in the sale. In 1799, Alexander McFarland and wife Mary of Russell Co. VA sell the other 200 acres of Greene Co. land to John Morris Sr.

1802: Nov 3 Tn, Greene Co, an Alexander McFarlane married Mary Crawford; bond by John Hall. This Mary Crawford is the daughter of Isabella McFarland (daughter of William McFarland, son of Duncan), therefore it is not this Alexander. The Alexander who married Mary Crawford would have been born abt. 1780. He ended up moving to Alabama according to probate records in 1848 in Greene Co. concerning the estate of Isabella Crawford and her deceased daughter Mary McFarland (Alexander's wife) Could this Alexander be a grandson of the first Alexander?

Below are notes found on internet about Alexander. It looks like the research of Mary T. Haines:
QUESTIONABLE LINK: Not sure if the Alexander who married Mary Crawford was the
same one who was son of Duncan. The one who married Mary Crawford may have
been Alexander, who may have been son of this Alexander, or perhaps a
    completely different Alexander.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Possessions: 1774; 1774: William McFarland, assignee of Andrew Lyda, 300 acres both sides of Wolf Creek branch of New River, settled 1770. From Early Adventures on the Western Waters by Mary Kegley
    • Residence: 1782, Montgomery County, VA

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:
William appears in Chalkey's book as a son of Duncan in 1753. He must have moved south-west from the land near Warm Springs, to the land near Wolf Creek sometime before 1774 and his father-in-law panicked. It is interesting to note that this family line always lived north of the John McFarland line that settled around present day Wytheville. When they moved further south and west, they followed the northern mountains down the Clinch River; whereas John's family followed the Holston River.

    Augusta Co. VA records:

1753: Vol. 1, p. 58: shows March 18, 1753 a reference to Duncan McFarland and his son William (abt. 1732-1791) (p. 453 in Order Book I, Augusta County) See next entry which gives more details. This would be referring to the land they first lived on in Augusta Co. when they were neighbors with James Lockart.

    1774: Vol. 1, p. 179: Order Book XV, March 22, 1774 listed William McFarland, no inhabitant. (p. 433)

1775: Vol. 1, p. 185: Order Book XVI, p, 76: Alexr. Gibson petitions that William McFarland, his son-in-law, has moved out of the Colony, and his children are not properly provided for, viz: Isabella, Alexander, James, Mary, Daniel, Eleanor and John.--They are to be bound to said Alexander, their grandfather. William had moved west to the Wolf Creek area of Montgomery Co. that today is Bland Co.

In what becomes Montgomery Co. (but is Bland Co. VA today):

1774: William McFarland (son of Duncan), assignee of Andrew Lyda (Lyday), 300 acres both sides of Wolf Creek branch of New River, settled 1770. From Early Adventures on the Western Waters by Mary Kegley, LDS microfiche 6125902 Vol II page 66 (original page 139) and Page 111 (original 123)

From all later records, the land is on the Muddy Fork of Wolf Creek, near the present town of Grapefield in Bland County.

    Military Records:

1774: From the Preston and Virginia Papers, Vol. 1, p. 78 "Lewis, Col. Charles. Letter to (William Preston) mentions (July 9) Captain Dickinson's skirmish with the Indians and wound received by William Mc Farlan at Warm Springs; people in great confusion." There is some concern about whether this is all the same William McFarland because you can see by the dates, William was listed as "no inhabitant" in March, 1774, and was instead in the southwestern part of VA buying land along Wolf Creek it is presumed. However, he is the only known William McFarland. Did he go south earlier to establish his claim, return home to pick up his family, get wounded in July 1774 and then return south and join Daniel Smith's company in the same year? I guess that is possible. The Capt. Dickinson is John Dickinson who was a neighbor in what became Bath County. This incident happened prior to the Dunmore Expedition when Indians became enraged over the April 30, 1774 murder of peaceful family members of Chief Logan by Daniel Greathouse and other militiamen who were part of Capt. Michael Cresap's Company. Many of those militia men then were in the company of Capt. Hancock Lee, including William McFarland. What is missing are exact months for these rolls.

It is interesting to note that there is a William McFarland who appears in Capt. Hancock Lee's Company in 1774. (Virginia's Colonial Soldiers, by Lloyd Bockstruck, pub. 1988, p. 142-3) Included in that company is the same Daniel Greathouse. It is hard to tell if this is the same William McFarland in all three places in 1774, serving with Capt. John Dickinson, Capt. Hancock Lee, and Capt. Daniel Smith.

1774: a William McFarland served in the militia of Capt. Daniel Smith guarding the frontier. When the names of the men in this list are compared with the tax list of 1782, it seems that it includes the men who are in the area that becomes Russell Co. in 1786 along the Clinch River. (not sure that the William along the Clinch is the same William as the one at Wolf Creek, but the distance is not too great). This group did not participate in the expedition to Point Pleasant, but did guard the frontier against Indian incursions.

1781: Montgomery Co.: Capt. Thomas Ingles Co. with William McFarland (son of Duncan), Wm. Lyday, John Gullion and Barnet Gullion soldiers. This district is near Wolf Creek, in present day Bland County. This list does not overlap with the lists that include John and Robert of Reed Creek in what becomes Wythe County. Source:
Militia of Montgomery County, Virginia by Mary Kegley, 1990, p. 16. R929.37557 K26M 1990, at the Dallas Public Library (Capt. Thomas Ingles was living in Burkes Garden)

1782: Tax List for Montgomery County:
William McFarelane with one tithe, 10 horses, 20 cattle. (William dies in 1791 at Round Mountain, Wythe Co. Today that is Bland Co. near Wolf Creek close to town of Grapefield.)
Alex McFarelane next to him with one tithe, 1 slave, 2 horses, no cattle, next to Robert Crawford. (Not sure which Alexander this is....son of William, or brother). Robert Crawford is next to them. He was married to Isabella McFarland, William's daughter. {Another Alexander McFarland, born abt. 1780 later married Mary Crawford in TN in 1802. That Mary was the daughter of Robert and Isabella Crawford.} Joseph, Willliam, and Alex McFarlane are living near Thomas Ingles, Peter Groseclose. It is uncertain who this Joseph is. There is a Joseph McFarland, brother of John and Robert McFarland, part of the line of Robert and Jennet McFarland from Lancaster County, PA that was living in the Reed Creek area from 1771 on. We don't know when he died or exactly where he was living, but this could be him.

The land grants to William McFarland were not finalized until after his death. It seems that there was a dispute between the Ohio Company and the Loyal Company as to who owned this land...and then there were the disruptions of the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. With the creation of Tazewell County in 1799 things began to be finalized based on the original surveys.

William McFarland died in 1791. Tradition says he died at Round Mountain. The Muddy Fork of Wolf Creek flows just north of Round Mountain. The valley where people lived is the present town of Grapefield. His son James McFarlane was given the administration of the estate in 1791, and as early as 1801, his son Daniel is deeding over his portion to James while he was living in Cumberland Co. KY. During the ensuing years, James, living in Russell County pays the taxes and is considered the owner. James gets Isabella McFarland Crawford's portion in 1817 while she is living in Greene Co. TN. I have not found any more records of the other siblings relinguishing their portions to James.

In the Wythe Co. tax list of 1793 there is a Louesa McFarland in Sect. 3, north of Walker's Mountain, James Davies Commissioner. It was recorded on May 22. Also recorded on this same day was Thomas Neel (Neal), husband of Eleanor McFarland, daughter of William McFarland. This would be Bland County today. There are no other McFarlands in the list. We know from later records that Eleanor and Thomas Neel moved here from Augusta Co. (she was married there around 1774), and that they lived in what is Grapefield today. Thomas did not own any land (that I have found), they must have been living on William's land, because in 1825, James refers to her living on this land that belonged to him as long as she lived.

It looks as if Louesa (Lucy, Lucresa) could be the 2nd wife of William McFarland, and mother of Rhoda and Martha McFarland. Martha (b. 1784) marries their neighbor in 1802 (mentioned below), and Rhoda, born around 1789, is binded out in 1801 to John Peery. That could mean that Louesa died that year.

    Tazewell County records:
In the Archives of Tazewell County, p. 167, says William McFarlin (assignee of Andr Lyda) is granted 195 acres on Jan. 9, 1805, surveyed on Feb.25, 1775 for the Loyal Company, on both sides of Wolf Creek. Grant #54, p.8

Other grants refer to another 72 acres. Of particular interest is the grant made to Daniel Justice in 1809 that refers to his grant going to the corner of the 72 acres granted to William McFarland. Daniel Justice's son, George Justice, married a Martha McFarlon (b. 1786) in 1802. ( It is believed by some that Martha is a daughter by William McFarland's second wife.

James McFarlane continues paying taxes and in the Archives, p. 147 is the list of county taxes in 1814: It reads:
Wm McFarland est. Tazewell, 195 acres Wolf Creek 39 SE
72 acres Wolf Creek 39 SE
107 acres Wolf Creek 39 SE

In 1790 tax list for Russell County is a Robert, Alexander, and James McFarland. James is the son who became the administrator for William's estate in 1791. Robert is the Robert Henry, considered a son of Alexander Sr. the son of Duncan.

    Washington Co. formed in 1777
    Russell formed in 1786.
Wythe Co. formed from Montgomery in 1790.
    Lee formed in 1793
Tazewell formed in 1799. The Wolf Creek area was in Tazewell until the formation of Bland in 1861.

    BIOGRAPHY:
Isaac Irwin, the father of our subject, was born in Virginia, and when a young
man accompanied his father when he removed to Nelson County, Ky. There he met
and married Miss Ellen King. There were born to them eleven children, nine of
whom lived to attain years of discretion. Subsequently he removed to Hardin
County, where he lived until he was fifty years old, then went to Putnam
County, Ind. There he lived until his death, which occurred when he was
eighty-four years of age. This event occurred just before our subject came to
this State. Mr. Irwin followed agricultural pursuits nearly all his life. He
was frequently called upon to fill various offices, and is one of the prominent
citizens of his district. The grandfather of our subject, John Irwin, was the
first member of this family to leave the old English home for the New World. He
settled first in Virginia, afterward removing as above noted to Kentucky, where
he died in Nelson County about the year 1818.

HISTORY: From "History of Woodford County, Kentucky" by Wm E. Railey 1938 at
Bellingham Library R929.3R: He was born in Augusta County, VA Oct 1743 and
built his home on the Greenbrier River, in what is now Pocahontas County, West
Virginia, and was known as Clover Lick Fort, an outpost used during the
Revolution against the Indians. This estate had been sold to his cousin, Major
Jacob Warwick, when he removed to Kentucky, and settled in Woodford County,
near Pisgah Church, where many of his descendants now reside. He came to
Kentucky with his brother-in-law, John Gay, in September 1783. In February
1784, moved out into what is Woodford county (Kentucky), and opened and
operated a sugar camp. In 1795 Col. Alexander Dunlap and Major Samuel
Stevenson expored southern Ohio for desirable lands. In 1804 he removed to
Brown County, Ohio, and also acquired land near Chillicothe, on the Sciota.
Col. Alexander Dunlap was an Indian fighter in the Greenbrier, and on the Weaw
campaign in Kentucky. His title of Colonel was received through service in the

Is there any record that shows his name as Robert Henry? Also, is there any record that shows him to be the son of Alexander? Couldn't he be the son of Robert, son of Duncan?

    Augusta Co. VA

There are three documents for a Robert McFarland in Augusta County during the Revolutionary War period. They could be for this Robert McFarland, or they could be referring to the Robert McFarland, born abt. 1725, supposed son of Duncan. It makes more sense, because of age, for it to be this one.

John Lewis' company, on the same payroll as Alexander McFarland.

A Robert McFarland also appears in Staunton court in October, 1776 where he is called as a witness against Alexander Miller, a Rev. who has refused to be disloyal to the King. Robert is also being paid for travel accompanying said Miller, and the distance he travels to Staunton indicates he is coming from Duncan's area near Warm Springs, not Reed Creek area. Found this is Vol. 1 Abstracts from the Records of Augusta County,
    Virginia, by Lyman Chalkley, on-line:

"To Robt. McFarland, summoned by the officer; to assist, for going 50
miles, at 4 pence per mile. To the witnesses for attending one day each, 25
pounds of tobacco, or two shillings and one penny, viz: William Ewing,
Silas Hart, Mary Erwin, James Montgomery, William Givens, Robert McFarland,
    Thomas Smith, and James Hill."

William Givens is a neighbor to Duncan.

1777: Nov. Muster Roll of Cap. Joseph Crockett Co. of the 7th Regiment by Col. Alex McClenachan (from Augusta Co.). Robert McFarlane is listed, says enlisted for 3 years. On furlough in Nov. 1777. In this company is Robert Sayers as 1st Lt. There is a Richard Scaggs. The rest of the names are not familiar.

Petition to Form Russell County, Virginia
    December, 1785
The petition of sundrey inhabitants of Clinch River, Moccasin Creek, Powells Valley, and others, citizens of Washington County humbly represent that your petitioners are situate from the line of Montgomery as it crosses near the source of Clinch River, down the same eighty miles; thence to the extreme settlements of Powells Valley forty more. ...
Included in this list is Joseph McFarlan, with Robert McFarlan next to him. They are near Samuel Vanhook, James Shewmaker, William Price. Then further down the list is Alexander McFarland. Other lists that show everone's signature also has a Robert McFarland Jr. listed. Not sure who this Joseph McFarlan is. The Joseph McFarland of the Duncan line that is known, is the son of Robert Henry and was born in 1775, therefore too young to sign a petition, one would think. However, there may be children of Robert from Augusta Co. Warm Springs area that are not known or are mixed up with the other Robert line.

    • Possessions: 1797, Russell County, Virginia; 1797: Alexander McFarland Sr. on Feb. 28, 1797 buying 200 acres on Sinking Creek, waters of Clinch R. land granted to Richard Price. (Russell Co. Deed Book 2, p. 270)
    • Possessions: 1795,1799, Greene County, TN; The first 200 acres was sold in 1795 to William Hall Jr, and no wife was involved in the sale.1799: Alexander McFarland and wife Mary of Russell Co. sell 200 acres of their land in Greene Co. north of the Nolachucky.
    • Possessions: 1802, Russell County, Virginia, USA; 1802: Pers. Prop. Lower District: Joseph McFarland Upper Dist. Alexander McFarland Sr. 1, Alexander McFarland Jr. 1, James 1, Robert 2

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

The Alexander McFarland who fought at Pt. Pleasant in 1774 and on the Nolachucky in 1776, was born in 1750 according to his pension records which I have read and transcribed.

He received his pension of 10 pounds a year from Augusta Co. from 1788 to 1797, then from Russell Co. 1798 to Sept. 1804.

It is unknown if this Alexander, wounded and needing a pension from 1788 to 1804, is the same Alexander who purchased 400 acres in Greene Co. TN in 1783.

Other records say that Alexander McFarland is the father of Robert Henry McFarland, who was born around 1740-50 time frame. This would mean an older Alexander than the one who received the pension.

An Alexander McFarland was also in VA when he signed a petition in 1785 to form Russell Co. from Washington Co. VA. This is assumed to be Alexander McFarland, who married Lydia Priest in that year. This should be Alexander McFarland, son of William McFarland. According to the Personal Property lists in Russell County, there was an Alexander present from 1787 through the 1790. There was also an Alexander who signed the petition to form Russell County.

Then there is no Alexander in Russell Co. until 1796 when the Alexander of Greene Co. TN sells his property there and moves to Russell Co. So the earlier Alexander appears to be the son of William and Elizabeth Gibson. He moves to KY where he appears in 1791. His brothers Daniel and John also move there. There is very briefly, a James and a Robert. Not sure who they are. However the Robert appears married to a Catherine and gives permission for his daughter Anne (Catherine) to marry Robert Young. Alexander McFarland signs the bond.

1796: Personal Property Upper District: Alexander with 1 tithe, James with none. Land Tax Upper Dist. James with 275, 110. James new deeds 162, 80. Robert with 172.
1797: Land Tax Upper Dist. new listings: Alex McFarland from R. Price-250 acres Pers. Prop. Alex with 2 tithes, James with one
1798: Pers. Prop. Upper Dist. Alex. McF. with 2, James with one
1799: Pers. Prop. Upper Dist. Alex. McF. with 2, James with one
1800: Pers. Prop. Lower District: Robert McFarland with 3 (Upper Dist. doesn't exist for 1800)
1802: Pers. Prop. Lower District: Joseph McFarland Upper Dist. Alexander McFarland Sr. 1, Alexander McFarland Jr. 1, James 1, Robert 2

1810: Pers. Prop. Lower District: Joseph, Robert, Robert

Judging from the 1797, 98, 99, and then the 1802 listing of Alexander McFarland Sr. and Alexander McFarland Jr., I believe he has a son named Alexander, who is the man who married Mary Crawford in 1802. They are not present in 1810, nor are they in Tennessee, so this would be consistent with the move to Alabama.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Name: Eleanor (Ellen) McFarland
    • Birth: 1760, Augusta Co., Virginia

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

In Lake Parson's book: Col. James McFarlane of Virginia, p. 119, she says that Thomas Neel was an attorney and they married in 1774 and then moved to the Grapefield section of what is Bland Co. today. He practiced law in Tazewell Co., was a Methodist Class leader and a farmer.

Eleanor, in 1825, was living on the property of her father that was in the hands of her brother James, who mentioned her in his will of 1825.
In 1830 she is in the census of Tazewell Co. as Eleanor Neel, bet. 70 and 80 years old with a total of 7 members living there.

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

Information from e-mail exchange 2014 from Doug Jenkins at atty2637@bellsouth.net:

Also - The there is a deed in Tazewell Co., Virginia where in 1817, Isabella Crawford of Tennessee (no husband or Tennessee County mentioned in deed) deeded her interest as heir of William McFarland, deceased, to James McFarland of Russell Co., Virginia.

Then in Greene Co., TN there is a Will of Isabella Crawford in 1843 naming her heirs. In 1794, she is mentioned in the Will of Robert Crawford as his wife in Greene Co., TN. And in 1795 there is a series of court records in Greene Co., TN where Isabella Crawford had an illigitimate child with William Chapman. Then William Chapman was given custody of the child THEN, based on the testimony of Alexander McFarland and wife, the child was treated inhumanely by Chapman and given back to Isabella! So they had a pretty good round over that child apparently.

    Another exchange:
I found a lawsuit today filed in 1848 in Greene Co., TN between the heirs of Robert and Isabella (McFarland) Crawford. Their daughter Mary married Alexander McFarland and the lawsuit alleges in 1848 that Mary had been dead several years, but Alexander McFarland was "probably alive and in Alabama." It also states that they had several children but only names Robert McFarland and Erasmus McFarland.

I don't know that it matters, except that it helps sort out the Duncan McFarland line. I suspect that we will find that Alexander McFarland who married Mary Crawford in Greene Co., TN in 1802 were cousins and he a grandson of Duncan. And we know that Mary was Duncan's great-daughter though son William McFarland who d. 1791 in Wythe Co., VA. At this point, I would not venture a guess as to who this particular Alexander McFarland's father was, but I suspect he (Alexander) was born ca. 1780 with an 1802 marriage date. He was gone from Greene Co., TN by 1809, but it is hard to say when he actually moved to Alabama. The information in the 1848 lawsuit came from Col. William M. Crawford, daughter of Robert Crawford and Isabella (McFarland) Crawford. He says his sister Mary Crawford McFarland is dead, but that Alexander McFarland is still alive "probably in Alabama." He also states that his sister Rebecca Crawford Guinn was deceased; his brother Alexander Crawford died in 1819 and never married; his sister Lydia Crawford married Nimrod C. Willett and was widowed and then married Jotham Brown and lives in Missouri; and his sister Margaret Crawford Hall lives in Alabama.

(mhh: In 1850 in Lamar Co. TX, living with Robert and Washington Mc Farlane is NIcholas S. Hall, 16, born Alabama, and Lucy P. .....unreadable last name 9 Ala.)

Family/Spouse: Robert Crawford. Robert died about 1794 in Greene Co., TN. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 52. Rebecca Crawford  Descendancy chart to this point died before 1850.
    2. 53. Alexander Crawford  Descendancy chart to this point died in 1819 in Green Co., TN.
    3. 54. Mary Crawford  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1780 in Virginia; died before 1848.
    4. 55. Lydia Crawford  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1782; died after 1850 in Missouri.
    5. 56. Margaret Crawford  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1786 in Tennessee; died in 1850 in Madison Co., Alabama.
    6. 57. William Crawford  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1790 in Tennessee.

  19. 25.  Alexander McFarland Descendancy chart to this point (5.William2, 1.Duncan1) was born in 1764 in Augusta Co., Virginia; died in 1812 in Arkansas.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

There could possibly be more than one Alexander who have been mixed together in various records. There is the Alexander McFarland, living next to William McFarland in the 1782 tax list in Montgomery Co. VA. on the property at Wolf Creek. This should be William's son Alexander. Next door is Robert Crawford who married Isabella McFarland, Alexander's sister. Their daughter Mary Crawford married an Alexander McFarland in 1802 in Greene Co. TN, but no one knows how that Alex. is related. There is also the Alexander McFarland, uncle to this Alexander.

    Concerning his time in Kentucky:
The area of Indian Creek where the McFarland men settled is in present day Clinton Co. Cumberland Co. was formed in 1798 from Green, and Clinton was formed in 1823 from Cumberland. There is a real problem finding any records here. There are no tax books for Cumberland Co. from 1806-1832. There is no tax lists before 1837 for Clinton. There are no deed records at all for McFarlands in Cumberland Co.There are many references to McFarlands Creek however. The book of deed abstracts mentions that in the early years they just sold their surveys and didn't file deeds. It does seem that Alexander and his family moved out to Arkansas, John is uncertain, and Daniel moved north to Perry Co. KY.

From Early Times in Clinton County, by Jack Ferguson, 1986 p. 137
    "the McFarland's were another family that came to Indian Creek very early. Maj. Alexander McFarland had a cabin on Indian Creek as early as 1798. Daniel, John, and a James McFarland were probably also settled on Indian Creek by that date. James McFarland entered 200 acres with the Greene County commissioners on December 17, 1798. On May 13 of the next year Blossom Jane Harvey McFarland, John McFarland, and Alexander McFarland each entered 200 acre tracts. Alexander, Daniel, and John McFarland are listed as settled on this Creek on the May, 1799 tax list; oddly enough James is not listed. Alexander McFarland is listed with 400 acres of land; it is possible that he had purchased James McFarland's grant. The entries for Blossom Jane Harvey McFarland, Robert Young, and Solomon Skaggs on May 13, 1799 for 200 acres each on Indian Creek and Edward Atkins for 200 acres on Willis Creek the same day all bear the notation: "withdrawn and delivered to Lydia McFarland." At this moment we have no definite information as to who Lydia McFarland was." {mhh, his wife, Lydia Priest McFarland}

Footnote: the act of the Gen. assembly on December 13, 1800 creating the County of Wayne mentions "Maj. Alexander McFarland's on Indian Creek." The adjutant Gen.'s office at Washington has no record of Revolutionary war service under this name, but it shows an Alexander McFarlin serving in Major John Ashe's Company, first North Carolina Regiment. He enlisted November 4, 1777 for three years. The State Department of archives and history at Raleigh North Carolina has two vouchers for revolutionary service, bearing the name of Alexander McFarland, both paid by the auditors of Washington and Sullivan counties. Only one family of McFarland is listed in the 1850 census of the County, that of William (1825) and Mary (1820) McFarland. They are shown with three children: Martha 1845, Nancy J 1847, and James L 1849

(It seems that brother James might have traveled with Alexander, John, and Daniel to KY, but decided to returned to VA where he settled in Russell Co. and the 200 acres that he surveyed went to Alexander possibly, which would explain Alexander having 400 acres on the tax list.)

Timeline and research from Mary T. Haines:

His name appears in 1775 when his grandfather Alexander Gibson goes to court saying the children are uncared for because the father is not present.

In 1782 he is on the tax list for Montgomery Co. next to his father William. It appears that at least some of the children left Augusta and moved south. (Alexander would be 18 years old)

In 1785 he married Lydia Priest in Washington Co. VA (that part that became Russell Co.) There are two dates: May 20 1785 by minister John Frost, and May 19, 1785 by minister Simon Cockrell

In 1787 he is on the tax list in Russell Co. VA with Solomon Skaggs, David Priest {brother of Lydia} (people who later move to KY with him)

The footnotes on p. 195 that accompany this primary-source narrative explain that Daniel Trabue's son had been murdered by the Harpe brothers. The three McFarlins were Alexander, John, and Daniel McFarland, brothers, and a Robert White. The McFarlands were appointed by Gov. James Garrard on June 7, 1799 to take the outlaws into custody if they were found in an adjoining state. The posse probably went down the Green River into western Tennessee where the Chickasaw Nation resided. The reward was $300.

Concerning his death from : https://www.accessgenealogy.com/arkansas/earliest-known-traders-arkansas-river.htm

"In the summer of 1812 a trading party under the leadership of Alexander McFarland left Cadron on the Arkansas to trade with the Indians on upper Red River for their horses and mules.5 Though they endeavored to avoid the Osage Indians, the latter entered their camp near the Wichita villages, August 13, and killed McFarland while his companions were absent. Subsequently, in 1813, a claim was filed with the government by the widow, Lydia McFarland, for the loss of her husband and his property. In 1814 depositions were given by John Lemmons, who was with McFarland's party, by William Ingles, Robert Kuyrkendall and Benjamin Murphy. The latter three stated that in October 1812 they were at the mouth of the Verdigris, where the Osage had collected to trade and there were present the band of Osage who had just returned from Red River bearing with them some of the property taken from McFarland. The Cherokee Chief Tallantusky was there in quest of merchandise he had confided to McFarland for trade to the western Indians. Recognizing in the possession of the Osage some of his property including two short swords, he demanded their possession and the Osage gave them up and through Ingles as interpreter admitted to Tallantusky that they had killed and robbed McFarland. From this it appears that there were traders at the mouth of the Verdigris as early as 1812."

From the research of James A. McFarland in a communication to Mary T. Haines, abt. 1996, comes the information about Alexander and his family after they left Kentucky:

"He is not on the 1810 Kentucky census because he traveled west to Missouri just after Jefferson completed the Louisiana Purchase and put in a claim (#289) of 750 arpens in Tywapity Bottom, in later New Madrid County. He possession and apparently put in crops from 1803 through the spring of 1805. (Unites States, American State Papers, vol. 3, p. 326) In 1809 the New Madrid earthquake struck the bootheel of Missouri, and many lost their farms through actual subsidence of the land, while others left, fearing another or greater earthquake. Alexander and Lydia may have moved farther west, along the Arkansas River to Cadron Bayou shortly before the earthquake, since Arkansas records show that he led a party of settlers to Cadron Bayou in 1808. (Morgan, James Logan, Arkansas Newspaper Abstracts, 1819-1845, vol. 1, p. 41, Morgan Books, Newport AR, 1981. 2 vol.)

This excursion was, in 1808, deep into territory claimed by the Osage Indians who claimed all lands drained by the Arkansas River north of the Cimmaron River. Little Rock was the westward limit of the white man, and anyone west of that settlement and fort was fair game for the Osage. Alexander's party was some 16 to 20 miles upriver from Little Rock.

Early in 1814, disaster struck. The Osage raided the settlement, and Col. Alexander McFarland and a R. Gelerin were mentioned as two of the casualties. (mhh note: this is an incorrect interpretation of events and date. It was 1812 and Alexander McFarland and others were part of a trading party to the Red River, looking to trade goods with other Indians. The Osage attacked Alexander while he was alone in his camp and killed him and stole his goods.)
(United States, Territorial Papers of Louisiana, Missouri Territories, 1815-1821, p. 52ff.)

On 27 May 1826, a claim was allowed to Lydia McFarland for $248 against the Osage Indians. (United States, Territorial Papers of the United States, Arkansas territory, 1825-1829, vol. 20, p. 257.) On 27 July 1827, Lydia died."

McFarland, who was assignee of Solomon Skeggs.
RESIDENCE: Alexander McFarland, Lydia, James, Blassingame Harvey McFarland,
John and Daniel all lived for awhile in the Cumberland of Kentucky (Clinton
County) in the 1790's, before Alexander and Lydia and Blassingame Harvey
McFarland moved to New Madrid Missouri by 1803 and then to the Arkansas
    territory.
RESIDENCE: Settled New Madrid County, MO -- Tywapity bottom 1803- 1805.
Settled Cadron 1808 640 acres Arkansas Territory.
DEATH: Alexander was killed in 1812 by the Osage Indians, west of Arkansas.
SOURCE: Much information from Mary Haines.
HISTORY: Alexander McFarland born ca. 1755 Augusta County, VA son of Wm.
Lived with father, William in Montgomery and Washington Co, VA in 1780's.
Married 20 May 1785 Washington Co, VA Lydia Priest, dau of William and Mary.
With Lydia he had Maranda b.1794 and Liddia b. 1798. Alexander also lived in
Cumberland (clinton CO), Ky, near Danville, Ky, New Madrid, MO and Conway Co,
    Arkansas (from Mary Haines).
HISTORY: Alexander McFarland led an 1812 trading party that left Cadron on the
Arkansas River to trade with villages on the upper Red River. Although he
endeavored to avoid the Osages, the latter entered his camp on 13 August 1812
and killed McFarland while his companions were absent. Later, in August 1812
Lydia McFarland filed for loss of property taken from her husband, Alexander
McFarland. In "White Claims for Indian Depredations: Illinois - Missouri -
Arkansas Frontier" by Marsha Hoffman Rising in National Genealogical Society
    Quarterly Vol. 84, No. 4 Dec 1996.

Alexander married Lydia Priest on 20 May 1785 in Washington Co., Virginia. Lydia was born about 1758 in Washington Co., Virginia; died on 27 Jul 1827 in Conway Co., Arkansas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 58. Blassingham Harvey McFarland  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1786 in Virginia; died after 1829 in Independence, Arkansas.
    2. 59. Maranda McFarland  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1788 in Virginia; died on 20 May 1837 in Cadron Township, Conway Co., Arkansas.
    3. 60. Lydia McFarland  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1790 in Virginia; died on 6 May 1836 in Conway Co., Arkansas.

  20. 26.  Mary McFarland Descendancy chart to this point (5.William2, 1.Duncan1) was born about 1764 in Augusta Co., Virginia.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

For years, people had confused this Mary McFarland, daug. of William, with Mary McFarland, daug. of John. That Mary McFarland married into the Ward family (neighbors in the Reed Creek area).

There also seems to be some confusion about this marriage...whether to a Daniel Robinette or a Michael Robinette. Just received this message by e-mail:

"If you check the actual marriages for Montgomery Co., Virginia, DANIEL Robinett married Mary McFarland in 1786 and the marriage bond is in the courthouse in Christiansburg. Michael Robinett's first marriage was also 1786 in Montgomery Co., VA to Mary Justice, daughter of Dan'l Justice."

I have checked on this and found the correct document above that shows Daniel to Mary McFarland in 1786.

So Daniel Robinette married Mary McFarland, daughter of William from the Duncan line in 1786.

Some trees have children of Daniel as Nathan Pythias Robinett, born 1787. This Mary must have died and Daniel married Anna Justice. Some trees say 1794, and the later children were his. Need to find the court records of the probate to find who the children of the first marriage are.

Then abt. 1810-1812, Michael Robinette married Rhoda McFarland (McFall?) the daughter of a William McFarland and a wife Lucy (Lucinda? Louesa?). Rhoda had two children before her marriage in 1810 to Michael, a James and Nancy, which she bound out in 1810. The James is most likely James B. McFarland, born abt. 1804-5.

The 1810 census for Michael Robinette appears to have Rhoda living in his household and she is referred to a Robinet in the court records in 1810.

Mary married Daniel Robinette on 24 Jan 1786 in Montgomery Co. VA. Daniel was born in 1764 in Botetourt Co., Virginia; died in 1842 in Wythe Co., Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  21. 27.  John McFarland Descendancy chart to this point (5.William2, 1.Duncan1) was born about 1765 in Virginia.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: 1799, Cumberland County, KY

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

John McFarland, son of William, appears to have moved with his brothers to Green/Cumberland County KY about 1795. He is listed in the tax records in 1799 and owned 200 acres of land.

See the notes on Alexander (his brother).

No one knows John's wife's name, nor the names of other children beside William. Records over the years have shown William to be the son of John Stewart MacFarlane of Lee County VA, but research has shown that to be incorrect.

So, what happened to John, the father of this William, after he left Cumberland Co. KY? If William married Rachel Farris in Sullivan Co. in 1811, it would appear that John was living there. More research into tax records and deeds needs to be done for Sullivan Co. TN.

Most sources attribute the William of Lee County as the son of the John of Lee County. The John Stewart McFarlane of Lee County, VA is definitely not the son of William and Elizbeth Gibson McFarland, and not the father of this William. That John was born in England, came to the U.S. in 1778 and became a naturalized citizen in 1809 in Lee Co. where he practiced law in Lee and Tazewell Co. and had married Elizabeth Campbell, daugther of Arthur and Margaret Campbell. (Look for John Stewart MacFarlane in the index to see his notes)

1820 census Lee Co. p. 133: John Mc farlane: 4 males under 10, 2 males 10 thru 15, one over 45. One female under 10, 2 females 10 thru 15, 2 females 16 thru 25, one female 26 thru 44. 3 slaves. This is John Stewart MacFarlane, born bef. 1775. John Stewart MacFarlane does have a son named William Wallace McFarlane, but he is one of the young boys still living at home.

William Mc Farlane is also on p. 133 and shows one male 26-45, 2 males under 10, one female 16-26, 2 females under 10. This is William, married to Rachel Farris.

1830 census Lee Co. John McFarlen, 1 male 10-14, 2 males 15-19, 1 male 60-69. One female 10-14, one 20-29, One female 50-59. 2 slaves. This is John Stewart MacFarlane

John Stewart MacFarlane is not present in the 1840 census. He had left the area it seems around 1838.

William is present in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses, and in the tax records until 1846.

Mentioned in will of Alexander Gibson, Sr. as a grandson.

    Mary Helen Haines notes:
Mary T. Haines sent me the book by Lake McFarlane Parsons. She has lots of information, but unfortunately, does not give her sources. Some of the information she cites is incorrect regarding James's siblings, etc.

She does not mention if he was the James McFarland who was briefly with brother Alexander, John, Daniel in Greene Co. KY and claimed 200 acres. His name appears there and is gone, and it seems as if Alexander absorbs his claim.

Born in 1767, he was active in many events of early Russell County History and
served in the State Legislature. Their five children were Alexander, Augusta,
Clarissa (md Kendrick) and James M. ...... John A., son of Alexander, married
"Lou" Ann Hunt of Tazewell County.
QUESTIONABLE LINK: Records of Linda Sykes state that Alexander Jackson
McFarland's father had a brother named James. Most researchers of her family
state that this James was the one who married Jane Price. Linda Sykes notes
that many in her family did marry into the Price family, but that James who
married Jane Price possibly could have been an uncle instead of a brother,
since he was born several years earlier than the rest.
This family has definitely linked Joseph, William Monroe, Christopher, and
Robert C. as siblings. Other siblings: Angie, Rebecca and B.L. supplied by
James C. McFarlen. It is also believed that there was a brother James, but
the early birth date of 1767 is troubling.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

A decendant says that Daniel(1769-1840) also had a son named Alexander (1790 to 1849). He is the father of Nancy McFarland, born 1814 in Crawford Indiana who married Ohio Clay Comb in 1832. Came from CMW FB page.

In Deed Book 1, Tazewell Co., p. 69, Daniel McFarlane of Cumberland Co. KY grants to James McFarlane of Russell Co. VA, in 1801 his portion. (This is the Wolf Creek land that William McFarland, his father, surveyed and then James, the executor of the estate, purchases the portions from the other children.)

The following three paragraphs refer to another Daniel McFarland who hailed from Caswell Co. NC and then moved to White Co. TN
There is a land grant made in 1805 to Daniel McFarland of 200 acres in Barren Co. KY on Trace Creek. (p. 373 of The Kentucky Land Grants, by Willard Rouse Jillson, 1971, Vol. I, Part I, Grants South of Green River).

In the 1810 census Daniel McFarlin is living in Barren Co. KY : On male 45+, 1 male 10 thru 15, 1 male 16 thru 25, one female 45+, 3 slaves. So the son age 10-15, born 1795 to 1800 would be Robert probably.

Not present in Barren Co. in 1820.

However there is a Daniel Mcfarlin in Perry Co. Indiana in the 1820 census. He is listed with 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, and himself 45+. 1 female under 10 and 1 female 26-44.

In 1830 Daniel Mcfarlin is in the Crawford Co. Indiana census. Here he is 60-69, oldest female 40-49. 2 males under 5, 3 males 5-9, 1 male 10-14, 1 male 15-19, 1 female under 5, one female 15-19.

In 1840 there are three McFarlands on the same page 455 of the Crawford Co. census: a D McFarland, an E McFarland, and an H McFarland. None of the ages fit.

Green County Kentucky: 1796: Alexander McFarland: Bondsman on marriage of Ann McFarlin to Robert Young

So, did Alexander be the bondsman to Ann marrying Robert Young, the son of Ezkekial Young of Montgomery Co VA?

    Makes sense to me.

  25. 31.  Martha McFarland Descendancy chart to this point (5.William2, 1.Duncan1) was born about 1786 in Montgomery Co. VA; died between 1850 and 1858 in Clinton, Putnam, Indiana, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Name: Rhoda McFall McFarland
    • Residence: 1850, Western District, Scott, Virginia, USA
    • Residence: 1860, Wise, Virginia, USA

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

Roda Robinett born abt. 1789 to 1792 in VA, father Wm. McFarling and Lucy McFarling according to the death records. I don't know why she is listed as McFall in most trees instead of McFarland. If this is all true, then Lucy would be a second wife to William, and Rhoda born just before William's death. Also, Rhoda would have been very young at the time of James B. McFarland's birth, which may explain why she gave him and sister Nancy up. Someone needs to find all these court records to clear up this mystery. There is a James Burriss, age 55 in the Western Dist. Tazewell Co. with wife Francis and children in the 1860 census. In the Eastern District is James B. Mcfarlin age 55 with wife Christina and children.

Notes from an email received from a descendant of James B. McFarland, 2014.

I am researching the family of James B. McFarland (1809-1876) who lived in Tazewell Co., VA. It appears that he was the son of a Rhoda McFarland and unknown Burriss because he is alternatively called James Burriss in some records, but mostly he is always called "James B. McFarland" in all Wythe and Tazewell Co., VA records. James' mother, Rhoda McFarland is mentioned in court records first as "infant of William McFarland" and then two of her children are bound out in 1810, James and Nancy McFarland, and she is referred to as "now Rhoda Robinett." As to her father, William McFarland, he appears to be the one that died in 1791 in Wythe Co., VA. There are deeds in Tazewell Co., VA where Daniel, James, and Isabella Crawford are named as William's heirs.

The source of this information was identified by Mary B. Kegley in an e-mail, Sept. 2014:

"From a published source, page 104, of Archives of the Pioneers of Tazewell Co. by Netti Shriner Yantis, she published Order book 1, and on page 357 records this: March 27, 1810, Ordered that the overseers of the Poor bind James and Nancy McFarlin, children of Rhoda McFarlin, now Rhoda Robnit [usually Robinett] to William Smith (WR) as the law directs.
On page 5 there was another interesting item (page 20 of the court order book), January 6, 1801, Ordered that overseers of the Poor bind Rhoda McFarland infant of William McFarland to John Peery, Gent. [Peerys were a very prominent family of Tazewell County]. There may be other references. "

MHH: I looked up John Peery (1748-1817) and found out that he lived in the Burkes Garden area during this time and raised his family here before moving on to KY. His heritage is Scots-Irish, and his father emigrated from Ireland abt. 1737 and they settled in the Bordon tract (around Calf Pasture River) before John moved to Burkes Garden abt. 1771. It is likely that he moved south abt. the same time as William McFarland, and they probably knew each other. Two of John Perry's sons stayed in the area and their plats of land are visible in the 1870 plat map of Burke's Garden. He was known as John Peery Blacksmith, or "Long John" A history of this family can be found in the book History of Tazewell County and Southwest VA 1748-1929, by Wm. C. Pendleton, pub. 1920 and available on Ancestry. pp. 420-423

Michael Robinett would have married her about 1810 according to the above. Was that a condition of the marriage, that she give up her two children? He certainly had already been married and lost his wife,

Michael Robinett is 26 to 44 in 1810 Wythe Co. census, wife is 26-44. (1766-1784), so is this Rhoda?
    1 male under 10 (could be Hezekiah born 1804 ), 2 females under 10
    1 male 10-15 (could be George), 2 females 10-15
3 males 16-25 (one could be Samuel born 1794), 1 female 16-25 (born bet. 1785-94)

In 1820 he is in Evansham, Wythe Co. over 45, she is 26 to 44.
    3 males under 10, 3 females under 10 (these would be Rhoda's)
    1 male 10-15, 1 female 10-15
    3 males 16-25, 2 females 16-25
    1 male 26-44, 1 female 26-44 (Rhoda)
    1 male 45+ (Michael)

In 1830 Michael is in Russell Co.. He is 60 to 69, she is 40 to 49.
2 males under 5 (one is Randolph, other could be William Monroe)
    1 male 5 thru 9 (Henry)
    1 male 10-14, (Rhoda's boy-born 1815-1820, could be Matthais)
    1 male 15-19 (prob. Rhoda's boy-born 1810-15, but can't be sure)
    1 male 30-39 (born 1790-1800) prob. Samuel
    1 male 60 -69 (Michael)
    2 females 10-14 (Rhoda's girls)
    1 female 40-49 (Rhoda)

In 1840 Michael is in Scott Co.. he is 60 to 69 (therefore 1760 to 1770), she is 40 to 49 (therefore born 1790 to 1800).
    1 male 10 thru 15 (Randolph)
    1 male 15-20 (Henry)
    1 male 60-70 (Michael)
    1 female 5-10
    1 female 40-50 (Rhoda)
Living next door is Matthais Robinett who is 20 to 30 Prob. son by Rhoda
on same page as Samuel Robinett who is 40 to 50. Prob. son by 1st marriage

Michael Robinett and his wife Rhody, signed papers at Scott Co., VA in 1842
(recorded in Wythe Co., VA in 1843 as heirs of the estate of John Dunn.

Descendants of James, 135: Descendants of Michael, 13513; prepared by James
    M. Robinett; Current Issue 1993.)

Roda Robinett is in Scott Co. VA in 1850 with sons Henry and Randolph.
fam. 861.Roda, age 58 with Henry Robinett age 28, and Randolph 23

Samuel with wife Rebecca is in same district, p. 144. Can't find Matthais. There are two younger Roda Robinetts. One is one year old, daughter of George Robinett, born 1795, next to William B. Neal family. The other is Roda Robinett, born 1834, daughter of Hesekiah, born 1804. Those two men could be Michael's sons from his first marriage, and step-sons of Rhoda.

She is in Wise Co. VA in 1860 living with son Randolph Robinett and family. Henry is in Wise Co. also, living with James Robinett (b. 1802) and his wife Jemima. I believe James is a son of Michael and first wife. I found Matthais, born 1814 living in Wise Co. as well.

These are the sons of Michael and first wife I believe: Samuel born 1794, George born 1795, Hezekiah, born 1804, Michael born 1806. All are present in Scott Co. in 1850. Also the 5th son could be James, born 1802 living in Russell Co. VA in 1850, but in Wise in 1860. There is also the possibility of Sampson, born 1795, living in Russell in 1850.

The 3 sons I feel confident are Michael's and Rhoda's are: Matthais, born 1814, Henry born 1822, Randolph born 1827. There could possibly be 2 more, but I don't know their names or if they lived.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

In 1818 Joseph McFarlane signs an affidavit fo the pension application of Anjer Price in Warren Co. TN.

He was living in Jackson Co. Alabama in the 1830 and 1840 census, therefore it seems likely that if he died in 1840, he would have died there.

In 1830 census he is living next to Meredith Price.

On same page is Wm. W McFarland, age 30 to 40. On next page is Alexander McFarland, age 40 to 50. Why isn't this Alexander listed as a son? In the 1850 census Alexander, 56, born in KY, is married to Susan. He has a son named Washington, 22 AL, and another son more than likely, named William 28 AL living next door.

Is this person correct. There seems to be a duplication of names of children attached to Robert Henry McFarlane and Joseph McFarlane. There seem to be no descendants attached to the Robert Henry group.

  8. 40.  Alexander Mcfarlane Descendancy chart to this point (22.Alexander3, 4.Alexander2, 1.Duncan1) was born about 1780.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes:

Not sure how this Alexander is related to the Duncan line, but it is likely that he is the grandson of William McFarland, and the son of Alexander.

1782: Tax List for Montgomery County, VA, shows William and his son Alexander:
William McFarelane with one tithe, 10 horses, 20 cattle. (William dies in 1791 at Round Mountain, Wythe Co. Today that is Bland Co. near Wolf Creek close to town of Bastian.)
Alex McFarelane next to him with one tithe, 1 slave, 2 horses, no cattle,
(This is probably William's son Alexander, born in 1758) living next to Robert Crawford, who married Isabella McFarland.
Robert Crawford shown with 1 tithe, 6 horses, 8 cattle.

Joseph, Willliam, and Alex are living near Thomas Ingles, Peter Groseclose.

In an 1848 lawsuit between the heirs of Robert and Isabella McFarland Crawford, it lists the heirs: Col. William M. Crawford, Mary Crawford McFarland, who is deceased and it is believed that her husband is alive in Alabama, and others.

    Alabama records:

In 1816 an Alexander Mc Farlane is in the tax list for the Mississippi Territory of Monroe Co. Alabama. Monroe county was established in 1815 and is in the southern part of the state. I don't believe this is the same Alexander as the one in Madison Co.

Madison Co. AL was created in 1808.
Jackson Co. was established in 1819 from Madison Co.

In 1815 and 1816, Alexander MFarlin is on the Madison Co. AL tax lists and the Monroe Co. tax list in 1815. Don't know if this indicates two individuals, or one man owing two properties.

In 1830 there is a Joseph Mcfortin in Jackson AL census who is 50 to 60. p. 34. There is a Robert Mcfortin also on page 29, age 40-50. On that same page is William Price and Daniel Price. Where is Alexander?

Alexander married Mary Crawford on 3 Nov 1802 in Greene Co., TN. Mary (daughter of Robert Crawford and Isabella McFarland) was born about 1780 in Virginia; died before 1848. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Mary Neal is mentioned in two documents as the daughter of Eleanor Neal, yet she is not listed in the list of children that appeared in the Bland County history.

It appears as if she never married and is living with her brother Zachariah and his wife Cynthia and their children in the 1850 census in Tazewell Co. She is listed as the head of the family, and the owner of the land worth $400 that they are living on.

Need to go to Tazewell Co. deeds and see if she purchased the land from James McFarlane's heirs after she religuished the title to the land.

1802: Nov 3 Tn, Greene Co, Alexander McFarlane married Mary Crawford; bond by John Hall. Mary Crawford is the daughter of Isabella McFarland Crawford. She is the daugther of William McFarland.

Also in 1795 Alexander McFarland (the son of Duncan, or his grandson {son of Alexander b. 1723}) in Greene Co. sells 200 acres on north side of Nolachucky to Wm. Hall Jr. He and his wife named Mary then move to Russell Co. VA in 1797, where they have purchased 250 acres from Richard Price. On the tax lists he is shown with an adult son who is taxed, and then in 1802 there is an Alexander McF. Sr. and a Jr.

    Notes:

    Mary Helen Haines notes.

This William McFarlane, McFarland, is definitely not the son of John Stewart MacFarlane, as you can see in the tax lists below. He may well be the son of John, son of William, son of Duncan.

Some researchers have William as being born in 1788 and dying in Christian Co. KY in May 1849 with a completely different set of descendants. However, this is a completely different family as proven by DNA tests of descendants of both familes. The family that appears in Christian Co. KY and Henry Co. TN are connected with the Robert McFarland line from Lancaster Co. PA, not the Duncan line from VA.

William McFarland appears in the tax list for 1812 in Sullivan Co. TN. He married Rachel Farris there on March 15, 1811. There was a John McFarland in Sullivan Co. also who sold his land in 1812.

It appears that William moved to Lee County VA from TN. I am not sure what year, but all his children claim VA as their birth place.

Lee County tax lists exist from 1795 through 1814, and he is not present there. However there are no exant tax lists from 1815 to 1826. He does show up in 1828 list and from then on.

On the microfilm below, he shows up in 1832 and appears for the last time in 1845. By 1847 all this family has left and is now in Carter Co. KY

James would appear to be the oldest son since he was given the job as executor of his father's will.

Living in the county at this same time is the household of Michael Lark. DNA testing has shown that descendants of James M. Lark, (born abt. 1829 in Russell County, VA, the bastard child of Polly Lark) matches the DNA of the descendants of James McFarlane, Sr., father of this James M. McFarlane. The young man James M. Lark, was ordered to be bound out in 1834 to George Finney in Russell County. In the 1850 census for George Finney, living in his household is James McFarlane, 21, a laborer born in Russell Co. It appears that he used that name in the census in 1850, but by 1860 and from then on, he uses Lark as a final name.

    Notes:

Mary Helen Haines notes: I wish to thank Jim Black for his photocopies, Mary Kegley for her books, Sharon Sinner and Jerry McFarland for their information about Tazewell county and Burkes Garden, and others for their e-mail exchanges that motivated this complilation.

This James B. McFarland is not descended from the line of Alexander and Elizabeth Tennent McFarland. He is not the son of Levin and Sarah Bonecutter McFarland of Frederick County, and did not live in Shenandoah County, VA. The James McFarland of Shenandoah County, born abt. 1807, is still present in Shenandoah County in 1850 and beyond, while this James B. McFarland is in Wythe and Tazewell Counties.

I came to the conclusion that James B. McFarland , must be the son of Rhoda McFarland and a male with the surname Burress (Burris) because of the results of DNA testing. Two males from the line of James B. from 2 of his eldest sons do not match the line of Levin McFarland's 3 descendants from two different sons that do match each other. However, the descendants of James B. McFarland do match the surname Burris or Burrows. This and the following documents that Rhoda was a daughter of William McFarland, and that Rhoda had a son named James made this seem the logical conclusion.

I recieved various e-mails over the years from people who are descended from the line of William McFarland of Wolf Creek that led me to information that William McFarland, who died in 1791 in Wythe Co. might have had a second wife named Louesa, and children by her named Rhoda, Martha, and there is one more girl named Rachael that shows up in records.

Rhoda shows up in records in Tazewell Co. when she was bound out in 1801, and then when she binds out 2 children, James and Nancy in 1810, and she is married to a man named Robnit by 1810. Following these hints, then going to the county records and census records I have been able to follow where James lived and his children, and follow Rhoda in her life.

Starting with William McFarland. William arrived in the Wolf Creek area about 1770. Back home in Augusta Co. (Jackson River area), his wife must have died and in 1775 his father-in-law went to court asking for the children to be bound to him. William had 300 acres surveyed on Wolf Creek and settled there, but the formal documents for this property were not finalized until after his death.

William's children began moving to Wolf Creek. The eldest girl Eleanor, married to Thomas Neel in Augusta, moved here in the 1770s, and probably lived on William's land. When William died in 1791, his son James was named the administrator of his estate.(March 8, 1791, in Annals of Southwest Virginia, p. 1361) This is in the Wythe Co. records also. However, there is a gap in their county court records from 1792-95, which may have some critical records where the estate goods were sold, or the heirs signed over property. It is not till 1801 that records in Tazewell Co. show that William's son Daniel in Cumberland Co. KY sign over his rights to brother James. In 1817, Isabella McFarland Crawford sells her part to brother James while she is living in Greene Co. TN.

    Concerning Louesa:

1793: Louesa (Lucresa) McFarland is on the tax list for Wythe Co., owned 2 cattle. The census taker (John Davies Commissioner for area north of Walkers Mt) visited her on May 22, the same day he visited Thomas Neel(husband of Eleanor McFarland, daughter of Wm), who had 3 tithes and 10 cattle, and William Kidd. This indicates they were all immediate neighbors. This land becomes Tazewell Co. when the county was formed in 1800, and then Bland Co. when it was formed in 1861. It is near the present town of Grapefield today.

Louesa must have died in the late 1790s because daughter Rhoda was bound out. Source: Archives of the Pioneers of Tazewell Co. by Netti Shriner Yantis, p. 5, from Order Book 1, p. 20, on January 6, 1801 "Overseers of the Poor bind Rhoda McFarland infant of William McFarland to John Peery, Gent." Mary Kegley informed me that the Peerys were prominent people in Tazewell Co. This statement does not mean she was an infant the way we think of it, but that she was too young to be independent. Later census records for Rhoda indicate she was born abt. 1789, so she was abt. 11 years old.

Her probable sister Martha marries George Justice in 1802 in Tazewell Co.

Another entry in Order Book 1, p. 210, in 1806 has Rhoda MacFarlane and John Peery testifying in a Tazewell court proceeding. (p. 64 or Archives)

In about 1805, Rhoda gave birth to two children, which she binds out in 1810. Order Book 1, p. 357, March 27, 1810, Ordered that the overseers of the Poor bind James and Nancy McFarlin, children of Rhoda McFarlin, now Rhoda Robnit [usually Robinett] to William Smith (WR) as the law directs. (Archives, p. 104)

It is not clear from census records whether they were twins or born closely together. Both show up in later census records as being born abt. 1805.

William Smith is in the 1810 census record in Wythe Co., Image 36/46. In his household is one male under 5, and 2 females under 10. In 1820 William Smith is in Tazewell Co. and also has the appropriately aged children to be James and Nancy.

By 1830 James McFarland appears to be living in Wythe Co. near Walkers Creek area, where he appears in the census as James D. McFarland, p. 345. Image 66/109. He is a male 20-30, wife the same. There is one boy under 5 (Lorenzo Dow probably) and then 3 other children who would not be his.

In 1840, James Mcfarlane is still in Wythe Co., He is male 30-39, with wife the same. There are 2 males under 5 (Stephen, David), one 5 to 9 (Jacob), one 10-14 (Lorenzo Dow) and one 15 tthru 19 ?. One female under 5 (Elizabeth), one 5 thru 9 (Susannah, Jemima?), one 10 thru 14 (?), one 15 thru 19 (Jane who appears in the 1850 census, who might be a niece). Since the census is not alphabetical, we can see his neighbors: Ambrose Grayson, William Heninger (married to Barbara Lambert),John Lambert Jr, Samuel and Henry Lambert, Solomon Perkey (married to Peggy Lambert),Francis Gullion, Solomon Kimberling. From Mary Kegley's history of the Lambert family, we see that John Lambert Jr. obtained 159 acres on Walkers Creek, so this is where James McFarland was living in 1840 and 50 before he moved to Tazewell Co. by 1860.

In the county court records of June 8,1840 a record appears in Abstracts of Court Records of Wythe County, Virginia, 1790-1791, 1795-1810, Volume 1; Mary B Kegley,p. 168.
" Claims for killing wolves and foxes:....James B. McFarland (Ben R. Gibboney & Co.) 1 old wolf, $5.00."

During these years in Wythe County, the children were attending school. However, James and a few of his neighbors could not afford to pay the fees, so the Commissioner would ask the teachers to fill forms outlining the names of the children and parents who could not pay, so that the teacher could be compensated. Mary Kegley gathered this information into her book The Lost Children of Wythe County, Virginia,1790-1878.

Info from e-mail received in 2014 concerning the parents of James B. McFarland:

I have only checked books and I have never checked the deeds themselves, but I suspect there are other deeds.

    (1) "Overseers of the poor bind Rhoda McFarland, infant of William McFarland, to John Peery, Gentleman." 6 Jan 1801 Tazewell Co., VA. My interpretation of this is as follows: About this same time in Tazewell Co., VA, George Justice marries Martha McFarland. When William McFarland died in 1791, James McFarland became his administrator; however, no estate was ever administered. A Lucinda/Louesa/Lucy McFarland is on the tax lists until the late 1790's. When Rhoda "McFarling" Robinette died in Wise Co., Virginia in 1867, her parents were given as Wm. and Lucy McFarling. So that Lucinda McFarland on the tax lists would be the widow of William McFarland. I think William's first wife died around the time of that court record where Alexander Gibson got custody of his kids (1775). For some reason, William McFarland's land grants for the surveys he made in the early 1780's were not actually granted until 1800 and 1805. There should be deeds from all the heirs, but I need to go there because I can't find them in available books. From William McFarland's marriage to Lucinda, he had at least Martha and Rhoda - perhaps more.

    (2) "Overseers of the poor bind James and Nancy McFarland, children of Rhoda McFarland, now Robnit, to William Smith (WR) as the law directs." 24 Apri 1810. Tazewell Co., Virginia. Nancy married Jacob Giffitts in 1825 and raised a large family. She had daughters named Rhoda and Louesa/Lucy. Nancy died in Tazewell Co., VA after 1880.

In the 1840 census of Tazewell Co. William Smith, esq. age 70 to 79 is on same page as Jacob Stump and lots of Prewitts, one page over from James Burriss, age 30 to 40 and tons of Neels.

This would explain the YDNA match to Burress surname, but not any McFarlands. If this is true, then it means that this line is descended from Duncan McFarland (of later Bath Co.), through his son William who died in 1791 in Wythe Co. (Wolf Creek area), which is where all this group of people lived.

There is a James Burriss in Tazewell Co. born 1800-1810 in the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 censuses. He is married to Mary Frances Neel. So this James Burriss is separate from the James McFarland below married to Christina (prob. Lambert). The census numbers below indicate the presence of the two boys Lorenzo Dow and Jacob Burris from the very beginning; they are not adopted children.

Some people have speculated that Lorenzo Dow and Jacob Burris were informally adopted by James B. McFarland, or were bound to James B. and that they were products of a Burris male. However, it is my belief that James B. McFarland and his sister Nancy, children of Rhoda McFarland, later Robinett, were the children of a Burris male.

The only way to know for sure is to find a male descendant of David McFarland to test their Y-DNA to see if he matches a Burress also, or matches the known descendants of William McFarland.

I am trying to establish the true parentage of Lorenzo Dow Burris and Jacob Burriss of Wythe County, VA.
I believe they were probably unofficially adopted by James B McFarland.

Although we find written records of these brothers with the surname of Burriss, they later took the surname of McFarland. It appears they lived with and were raised by James B McFarland and his wife, Christiana. Early records from from Wythe County, VA ("Lost Children of Wythe County") show Lorenzo and Jacob living with James and listing their surnames as McFarland.

Both Lorenzo and Jake's marriage documents from Wythe County show their surname as Burriss. Furthermore, records from Sharon Lutheon Church in Ceres show the brothers still using the surname of Burriss in 1852. In the 1870 and 1880 census records, the brothers are using the surname McFarland. Lorenzo is living in Bland
County in 1870 and in Tazewell County in 1880. Jake is living in Tazewell in both 1870 and 1880.

If any Burriss or McFarland searcher can help with this family, I would greatly appreciate it...Dave Bane

    Hi Mary,
Do you have any information on Alex Neel, we have him married to Mary A. McFarland/McFarlane, d/o James B. McFarland & Christiana (Who I believe is also a Neel). They had several children together, but something happened as we find Mary living with her father in 1870 Tazewell County, VA. with her dau, Molly 3; Shelby 2; Napoleon (Which is Alen Napoleon Neel) 6/12 months. We also believe that Wheeling in 1880 census living with Mary's brother, Ballard and his wife Eliza Spracher McFarland is Alex and Mary McFarland Neel's son. They are found in the 1880 Census living with Eliza's father, Peter Spracher. Dane Bane a cousin of mine has found a marriage for Alex and Barbara McFarland Neel, I don't have that information as yet. If you have any information you can share, I would appreciate it. Alen N. was adopted by James & Emalilne Bane McFarland. Alen Napoleon Neel/McFarlane was my grandmother's first marriage in Leigh, Colfax County, Nebraska. I will share information with you.

My great great grandmother was your Jacob McFarland's sister. She was named Jemima and married William Wilson in 1865 in Tazewell County, Virginia.

Their parents were James B. McFarland and Christina McFarland. I do not know Christina's maiden name.

Emiline Bean McFarland is my 2nd great aunt, daughter of my 3rd Grandfather, Uriah Bean and wife, Nancy Leedy Bean, both of Wythe County and later Bland County, VA. Emiline and Jacob McFarland moved to Tazewell County in the Clear Fork district in Burkes Garden.

If I can be of help, contact me at dbane@bane.org...I have extensive data on the descendents of Uriah and Nancy Bean/Bane, and am looking for any information I can find on Uriah's children. I just recently made a research trip to Wythe County where I found some information of Emiline and Jacob...Dave Bane

Jacob McFarland (from information in The Lost Children of Wythe County by Mary Kegley) was adopted by James B. McFarland. His birth name was Burris. So he would have been an adopted brother of Alex Napolean Neel who also appears to have been adopted by James B. McFarland. Jacob McFarland was the father of James S. McFarland who married Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" (Hanshew). Both Alex Napolean Neel/McFarland and James S. and Sarah McFarland lived in Leigh, Colfax County, Nebraska.
