In Buncombe/Haywood Co. NC:
I found a Daniel Fleming in the 1810 Haywood Co. NC census and he was older than 46.

Daniel Fleming was a neighbor of John and Jacob McFarland whose name appears in the early records as a neighbor when he was ordered to work on a road with John and Jacob McFarland in 1813 (County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Vol. “C” p. 47, FHL #463089

In the deed book A for Haywood County, p. 405 David Fleming sells his plantation "where he now lives" on the north fork of Hominy Creek for $100 to Thomas Able. This is recorded during the June session 1816. This section of land is near some of the McFarland land at Old Locust Field in Canton.

Supposedly Jacob McFarland, John's uncle was married to a Matilda Fleming.

Notes on Daniel Fleming found in Ancestry:
A Daniel Fleming, born 1765 is shown married to a Ann Farrar in 1783 in Granville, NC. others have him married to Susanna Johnston. They put him in the 1800 census in Lincoln NC, then 1810 in Haywwod NC.

In the Circuit Court records for 1816 in Ste. Genevieve County MO at various times an Abraham Fleming, Alexander Fleming and Patrick Fleming were called to serve. FHL #915670. Later Flemings in the area include Nicholas Fleming in the mid 1800s, and Samuel Fleming in late 1800s, and his son Charles R. Fleming.

There are no films of marriage records this early for these counties.

Mary married John McFarland about 1805 in Buncombe Co., North Carolina. John (son of John McFarland, Senator BY146078 and Rebecca Bell) was born on 14 Feb 1787 in South of the French Broad river, Indian territory; died on 26 Mar 1874 in Fannin Co., Texas; was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Fannin Co., Texas. Biography in Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri, p. 1135-6. "Dr. J. P. McFarland is the son of Newton and Mary C. (Pettit) McFarland, and was born in Ste. Genevieve County, Mo., May 29, 1843. The father was born in St. Francois County, and the mother in Wayne County. The McFarland family originally came from North Carolina to Missouri in 1816, being among the first settlers of St. Francois County. The paternal grandfather died in Texas, in 1875. The maternal grandfather, John Pettit, was a Virginian, and located in Wayne County, Mo., in 1819. He was a prominent physician, and followed that calling in connection with farming in Wayne County. He served as captain in the Black Hawk war, and in 1853 was killed by some highwayman or enemy. Newton McFarland, father of Dr. J.P., was in the service of the Iron Mountain Company for a number of years. He died in 1847. The mother is still living. They were the parents of three children, only two of whom are living; John P. and Charles. Dr. John P. McFarland was about four years old when his father died, and the greater portion of his youth was spent with an uncle. He was seventeen years old when he began the battle of life for himself. He began the study of medicine, and in 1866 graduated from the St. Louis Medical College, and immediately began practicing at Piedmont, where he has since made is home. In 1861 he complied with Gov. Jackson's call, and enlisted for six months as orderly sergeant in Company E, of the State Guards. In 1865 he was united in marriage to Samantha B. Lewis, a native of Alabama, who bore him two children, one living, Charles P. Mrs. McFarland is a member of the Christian Church, and the Doctor is a member of the Masonic fraternity."

Where is Charles in the 1860 census? He is not with his mother and brother in the St. Francois Co. Missouri census.

C.N. and Jane probably moved to Coleman, TX, about 1880 according to obit for Eliza Jane Lewis. In Frances Terry Ingmire's book, Ethel McFarland recalled her father calling him "Flat Land Charlie" because he went out to West Texas to live on the bald, flat, prairie. He supposedly made his fortune there. From census records we know that Arthur McFarland joined Charles there after he left Fannin County because of the land dispute. He is present in Coleman County, living in Coleman City in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. He is buried next to his wife, and Robert Lee McFarland, and Eliza Jane Bollinger, and the Pettys in the city cemetery in Coleman. Ethel kept referring to the McFarland family of Weatherford as being from this branch of Charles, but she must mean Coleman Co. instead--pretty close. The Charles McFarland of Parker County was born in Tennessee, so is a different family.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lucinda Pettit Hulsey, 96, early Fannin County Pioneer, who died at her home Saturday at 7:30 AM were held at the Oak Ridge Church of Christ Sunday. She was born near Ladonia in 1852 the daughter of J. N. and Emily McFarland Pettit. Survivors include: Mrs. Florence Scott and Mrs. Willie Mann of Ladonia, three sons, J. In. I have backtracked and found the connections. This Sophia Ann is the great-granddaughter of John McFarland. She appears on the 1850 census as the infant child of B.L. and S.A. Walker. fam. 260 of Fannin County, other townships, pp. 164-65.

Is the John N. DeGuire of the 1870 Cooke Co. census really Jasper N. (Newton) DeGuire? I assume it is. If that is the case, then these are the records found so far:

Army enlistment in 1899 in Nashville, TN, lists his age as 33 yrs. 4 months, from Rockwall Texas, working as a nurse, enlistment over in 1901.

In 1930 in California, Siskiyou Co., Jasper N. DeGuire, 64, a widow, was 37 at age of first marriage (abt. 1903), working as a laborer at the county hospital.

The California Death Index says he was born July 30, 1869 (error?), mother's maiden name is Chisholm, and died Nov. 21, 1941 in Los Angeles.

I found your website, and I thought you might be able to help me. in the summary below, Newt is the son of Jasper Newton Deguire, Sr. whose parents were Francois Paul DeGuire and Elizabeth McFarland (1814 NC-29 Aug 1853, Fannin Co., TX).

My 89-year-old mother asked me to write down the story that has been passed down through the years about her father's sister, Emma Todd (b. 5 May 1871 in Tennessee, d. 7 Mar 1946, Los Angeles, CA). As the story goes, two men asked Emma to marry her. John D. Pinkerton was one, and the other was Newt DeGuire (Jasper Newton DeGuire, Jr.). She chose Newt. (I believe the Todd family came to Texas in 1882, so I think this took place somewhere in Texas. The Todds were in Hill County, and Newt's families were from Kaufman-Rockwall, Texas). The way the story came down is that, before they married, Newt had to go on a cattle drive with his father, Jasper Newton DeGuire, Sr. The story came back to Emma that Newt had been killed on the cattle drive, so she ended up marrying J.D. Pinkerton. Pinkerton died in Clovis and is on the Obit Index on 17 July 1914. (I found that on the USGenWeb Curry Co Obit Index) After his death, Emma married Herbert Pierce (I think in CA; he was born in CA, and they were living in Los Angeles in 1920. Pierce died sometime between 1920 & 1930. Emma was walking along a street in Los Angeles one day, and she met and recognized one of Newt DeGuire's sisters. They visited, and Emma learned that Newt was still alive and living in CA. It had been his father who died on the cattle drive. When Newt had returned home and learned that Emma had married Pinkerton, he was broken-hearted and went off and joined the French Foreign Legion and traveled all over the world. He wrote down the stories of his travels and tried to get them published, but in the day before copy machines, when he sent them to the publisher, they were "lost in the mail". Anyway, he and Emma got together and married sometime between the 1930 Census and the year he died, 1941.

Here's where the confusion starts:
The Todd Bible shows that Emma married Pinkerton in 1902, but I have found records that Newt's father "dropped dead" in 1892 (nothing about a cattle drive; guess it could possibly have been a brother who died on the cattle drive or something). In the process, of trying to establish facts, I've created more mysteries! Have you ever heard any family stories that might shed light on this? Also, if you have any pictures of Newt, could you please email them to me?
