Their daughter Ida wrote in a diary in 1943 where she was born, what happened to her parents and siblings. "Granpa Mabry and Ella (sister) died of spinal minigits. As my mother lay dying three months after her husband's death, she told Ida, her daughter, to take her babies to raise. She knew that Ida planned to marry will Fortenberry soon. After her death, Mother Mabry's brother, Charles Wilkerson took the children, and all their personal and household belongings and wouldn't let Ida have them. She and will soon married and when Cherles, her brother, was about 5 or 6 years old, they got him throught the court. Viola, the sister, was also taken to her Uncle Charliey's after the death of her mother and father. To get away from him soon, she married at an early age- a short time later. Ida's husband,m will Fortenberry went to Tupelo, Oklahoma to find work, when Charles was aobut eight years old. Will sent for Ida and his family but when Uncle Charley Wilkerson heard about it he became very angry and took away the young boy, Charles. As Uncle Charles came fro him, Charles took off throught the grass like a turkey to hide. He was taken away, a very unhappy child. When Will met the train, his heart was saddened because Charles had been taken away. The law searched for them but was unable to located them. A few years later they learned he was in Arizona."

The narrative explains that the limestone gravemarkers were so worn they were not readable anymore.

Family/Spouse: Nancy Rebecca Bell Wilkerson. Nancy (daughter of George Wilkerson and Rebecca McFarland) was born about 1864 in Fannin Co., Texas; died in 1899 in Briartown, (Muskogee Co. OK) Indian Territory; was buried in Gum Springs Cemetery near Porum, Oklahoma. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Ida married William Love Fortenberry in 1899. William was born on 1 Jun 1879 in Denton County, Texas, United States of America; died on 12 Dec 1951 in Duncan, Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States of America; was buried in Duncan, Stephens County, Oklahoma, United States of America. Notes:

In 1910 census, Charley is living with his Wilkerson uncle, Charles and wife Katie, in Muskogee County, OK. In 1918, when he registers for the draft, he has moved to Tolleson, Maricopa Co., Arizona, where he can also be found in the 1920 census.

Notes from his sister Ida's diary written in 1943: She states that Charles was 3 when their parents died (of spinal-minigitis), and she had married at age 16, and kept Charles for a few years, but then "Uncle Charles Wilkerson stole brother away fromm us. He took him to Arizona. He (brother) was drafted and sent to the war (WW I). He served our country for two or three years. Stood the hardships but never was strong anymore.

Charles married a good girl after he came home, Chloe Edwards. She seemed to think a lot of him. He had to be treated at the soldier's hospital so often. At last he took suddenly ill with a heart attack. He was able to go homme, his home being in Glendale, Arizona, but he didn't live long as he got worse fast. The Lord was so good to him. Jist the day he passed away he sang good gospel songs and read his bible."

Charles married Chloe Lorraine Edwards on 2 May 1921 in Glendale, Arizona. Chloe was born on 13 Apr 1903 in Safford, Arizona. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
