    Notes:

    We do know from genetic testing that this line of McFarlands, and at least one of the Hunts next door, are part of a Scottish line of McFarlands, separate from the Cadet line. They are related to the Daniel McFarland line that came to America in 1 718/9 and settled in Worcester Mass.

    Susan Pavlech believes it is William the elder who patented this land.

    A Thomas McFarland marries Elizabeth Rose on April 30, 1796. This must be a different Thomas McFarland.

    So, what this Thomas married to a Horton daughter? Why did he sell the land?

    Is this Thomas McFarland the same Thomas McFarland that appears in the Caswell Co. censuses from 1810 through 1840. He was born around 1771 to 1775, and died before the 1850 census. It looks like he and his wife had 5 children from 1800 to 1810.

    Thomas McFarland in Caswell Co. married Rachel Winters in 1796. So, this is another Thomas, but then who is this, and is he related?

    I am making an assumption:
    One is that this William is the son of William and Keziah, and that he is the William Jr. in the 1790 census. Since it calls him William Jr. that would assume that William Sr. is alive. Where is he?

    Two: This William McFarland lived near Henry Horton, is the same man that married Henry's daughter Sarah and is the father of two children, William and James, mentioned in Henry Horton's will.

From LDS land records Orange County familysearch.org If Wm. McF. Jr. was born in 1760, he would only be 18 yrs. old at this time. So, more than likely, it is his father who has patented the land.

    In 1779 tax list is William Mc Farling, Peter Mc Farling and Thomas Mc Farling. So, this would be the William who patents the land.

    William McFarling entered for 400 acres, issued for 370 acres, survery 13 Aug 177?. Peter McFarling & Thos McFarling SCC (Sworn Chain Carriers) on the east side of Flat River bounded on the west by Flat River aforesaid on the east by land o f Peter King on the north by land of John Brown and on the south by a claim of Henry Horton including his improvement. Peter and Thomas being the older sons of William.

    So, circumstantial evidence would lead to the assumption that this William is the younger brother to Peter and Thomas.

    In 1790 NC census in Orange is Keziah McFarlin, Thomas McFarlin and Wm. McFarlin Jr. on page 096. On page 094 is Walker McFarland. So, William McFarlin Sr. is alive, but missing? Is the William McFarlin in York Co. SC the missing father?

    William's patent neighbor is Henry Hunt.

    Henry Hunt moves to Wilson Co. TN before 1820. Henry Hunt married Ann Taylor. Henry died in 1825 in Wilson Co. TN where he left a will naming his children. One of them Jesse Hunt is the next door neighbor to the McFarlands in the 1850 and 1860 cen suses in Wilson Co. TN.

    I believe that William McFarland, who moved to Wilson Co. TN was living on the land grant in Orange Co. that abutted Henry Hunt, therefore, he was either the person who claimed the land, or he inherited the land from his namesake father.

    I don't know where he is in the 1800 and 1810 censuses.

    In 1820 he is in Orange Co. NC. He is over 45. 1 male under 10 (Robert), one male 10 to 16 (Ira), 2 females under 10, 2 females 10 to 16, one female 26 to 45, one over 45. Jesse McFarland is living next to him.

    In 1830 he is in Wilson Co. TN. He is bet. 60 and 70. Has 2 boys: one is 20 to 30, one is 15 to 20. This corresponds to Ira and Robert. There are 6 women. The oldest is 40 to 50, one 30 to 40, two are 20 to 30, one is 15 to 20, and one 10 to 15. ( Don't know where his wife is-has she died, or is this another younger wife?)

    In 1840 he is in Wilson Co. TN. He is bet. 70 and 80. He is living with 2 women 40 to 50 (Sibby and Christina prob.)and one woman 70 to 80 (Catherine). His son Robert is livng near, aged 30 to 40. On page with all the Hunts and Alford Canady.

    1850 he is dead. Living in the household is Catherine McFarland, 80, Sibbie 53 and Christina 43, all born in NC. Jesse Hunt is next door, and Robert McFarland is a few doors down. Ira is in Wilson Co. according to the slave schedule, but his recor d cannot be found.

    There are two Larkins. The elder was born bet. 1770 and 1775. He married Patsy Matterson in 1803 in Orange Co. He was a witness to the will of Henry Horton in 1805.

    The census records for this Larkin McFarland do not show any children from a previous marriage. Therefore the connection of Larkin Jr. to this Larkin is not feasible, nor Thorton. So it is much more likely that Larkin Jr. and Thorton belong to a W illiam McFarland.

    Found an L. McFarland in Orange Co. in 1810, age 26 to 45, next to two families named Pierce, and Umstead. p. 857, with a male and a female under 10, and female 16-25. According to one tree on Ancestry, Keziah who married William was a Pierce.

    There is no solid connection to William and Keziah except timing and location. So he is here temporarily until better connections show up.

    In 1820 census he is in Orange Co. NC on p. 398, next to Richard Umstead, Betty laws, Simpson Adcock, then Thorton McFarland. Larkin is over 45, with 2 males under 10 (Radford and Wesley), a male 10 to 16, a female 10 to 16, and his wife Martha 2 6 to 45.

    In 1830 census he is in Madison Co. TN, p. 104. Males: one 50 to 59 (Larkin), one 20 to 29 (?), one 15 to 19 (Radford), one 10 to 14 (Wesley), one boy under 5. Females: one 30 to 39 (Martha), one 5 to 9, one under five.

    In 1840 he is in Dyer Co. TN, Image 31/40. Males: 2 under 5, one 30 to 40 (his eldest son), one 60 to 70 (Larkin), Females: 4 under 5, 2 age 5 to 10, 2 age 10 to 15, 1 is 15 to 20, one (Martha) is 50 to 60. Neighbors, Kimbro, McCorkle, Robinson

    His death happened in 1841 in Dyer. He has a son Wesley, born 1817 who is in the 1840 census in Dyer also, Image 39/40. In the 1850 census is son Radford McFarland, born 1814 in NC, fam. 287. But where is the eldest son, who was living with Larki n in 1840 census.

    Need to find the land sale records in Dyer County and see who sells Larkin's land.

    I am adding this Larkin as a son of William, however, I don't know this to be the case. He named his eldest son William, so that is where I have him for now.

    In Orange Co. TN census in 1820 on p. 310 is Larkin Mcfarland born 1775-1794, with 3 males under 10, one male 18 to 16, and Larkin 26 to 45. One female 10 to 16, one 24 to 45. This is the same page as Joshua Horton (26 to 45), The other McFarland
    s are all on p. 400 and 398.

    This Larkin did not move to Tennessee with the rest of his family.

    In 1850 census this Larkin is in Graves Co. KY.

    In 1860 he is living with William McFarland in Ohio township, Mississippi Co., Missouri.

    In 1812 Thorton McFarland is listed as being in the 2nd Co. Orange Co. Regiment. In 1814 he is listed as bing in the 1st Regiment.

    Does not show in the 1810 census, but in 1820 he is in Orange Co. p. 398.

    In 1830 Thorton McFarland is on p. 42 of the Granville Co. NC South Regiment Census. He was born bet. 1790 and 1800 and is near Richard Umstead Henry Wheeler, and William Jones. there are 4 males, the oldest 30 to 40, then 1 under 5, 1 is 5 to 10
    , 1 is 10-15. Females: 1 under 5, 1 is 5 to 10, wife is 20 to 30. He is on the same page as Larkin McFarland.

    On page 43 is William McFarland, born 1790 to 1800.
    Page 45 is Nancy McFarland, born 1780 to 1790. The widow of James McFarland.

    Do not know Thorton's father. At first I speculated it to be William, because his first named son is William. However, it could be Larkin Sr. by a first wife before Patsy Madison.

    He is in Carroll Co. TN in 1840.

    In 1850 he is in Gibson Co. next to William, (born 1818 in NC) who would appear to be his son.

    In 1860 he is in Gibson Co. , HopeHill on same page as Willliam.

    In 1870 he is in Gibson Co., next to William
