  • Notes
    • (Research):1 - Capt. Francis MacFarlane, who was born in 1727 in Scotland, and died on 23 March 1817 in Dublin, Ireland (buried Clonsilla Churchyard, County Dublin, Ireland). He was at the battle of Prestonpans (1745, Scotland) at which "Bonnie" Prince Charl es Stuarts uprising scattered the only government army in Scotland. Capt. Francis subsequently held various civil, military, and diplomatic posts; eventually acquiring property in Ireland where he settled and served as a Barrackmaster. Capt. Franc is married, first (1766, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland), Miss Jane Hastie (of that city) and had a daughter and three sons:
[from 'The barons of Arrochar and their cadets' a manuscript by Chevalier Terrance Gach MacFarlane]

2 - FRANCIS MACFARLANE, b. 1727, who was at Prestonpans 1746, where he was beside Col. Gardiner when that gallant officer was killed. Purchasing some property in Ireland, he settled at Stirling, co. Meath. To this Francis, his "cousin" Walter MacF arlane of
that ilk, the learned genealogist, transmitted a copy of the family pedigree.
He m. 1st, 1766, Jane Hastie, of Edinboro, by whom he had (with a dau. Jane, who m. Mr. Bevan, of Wales, and d.s.p.) three sons,
      1. HENRY LAWES, his heir.
      2. James Hepburn, of Stutton House, Suffolk, Post Capt. R.N.,
      3. Francis, of Longford and Pacefield, co. Dublin.
Mr. MacFarlane m. 2ndly, 1793, Mary Richardson, and by her had a son and a dau.,
      4. Edward North, of Mount Pleasant, co. Dublin,
      1. Mary
(Burkes Landed Gentry of Ireland pub.1912)

3 - The Macfarlanes of Hunstown House, Ireland claims descent from Andrew of Ardess. Miss Jean Macfarlane Scott gives 1672 as the year that this branch 'came off the old Arrochar line'
The chief evidence is a statement in the writing of Francis, the third representative, found on the flyleaf of a family bible and copied by Henry James, the fifth representative, in 1849, the salient portion of which reads:
"Macfarlane of that Ilk and Arrochar which had two sons, John, his brother (17th Chief -Ed) and Andrew of Ardess, who was my fathers grandfather. That is in the genealogy of our family which I received in the year 1763 from the late Walter MacFarl ane of that Ilk and Arrochar, the 22nd in direct line of male heir of the Earl of Lennox (20th from Gilchrist - Ed), wrote with«i» «/i»his own hand«i»-«/i» a man of great learning, a most ingenious antiquary, and by far thought the best genealo gist in his time."
Francis supported the Hanoverian cause and was present at the Battle of Prestonpans in 1746. He was beside Colonel Gardiner when that officer fell. Purchasing some property in Ireland he settled at Stirling, Co. Meath. In 1766, Francis marr ied Jane Hastie of Edinburgh, by whom he had three sons and a daughter, Henry, James, Francis and Jane. Secondly he married Mary Richardson, by whom he had a son and a daughter, Edward North and Mary. His oldest sea, Henry, succeeded him.

Y-DNA testing has shown this line to be part of the Scots lineage, not the Cadet line.

Their line is solid from Capt. Francis M'F on down.
